When Dilip Kumar And Vyjayanthimala’s Friendship Had Gone Sour (Photo Credit – YouTube)

The Hindi film industry is not uncommon with fallouts. However, some friendships that are destined to thrive often manage to mend their ways. One such bond was of Vyjayanthimala and the late Dilip Kumar. The duo was touted to be one of the most loved onscreen pairs during the 50s and the 60s. They also shared a warm friendship offscreen but they had an infamous fallout once which had led to their equation being tarnished for a brief period of time.

What Had Gone Wrong Between Vyjayanthimala And Dilip Kumar?

According to Etimes, Vyjayanthimala was originally cast for the 1967 film, Ram Aur Shyam opposite Dilip Kumar and had also shot for a few scenes of the movie. However, the producer of the movie, Nagi Reddy felt that the actress was being too fussy about things like her costume and jewelry.

Remembering Sunil Dutt The First Truly Feminist Hero Of Hindi Cinema On His Birth Anniversary
Image
Sunil Dutt didn’t pretend to be a feminist. It came naturally to him. He would pick up his wife the great Nargis’s trailing gown from the floor as easily as he could play the reformist hero of his lovely leading lady Nutan in the fabulous Sujata. And when Nutan became the dominant spouse in Khandaan , Dutt Saab surrendered wholeheartedly to the mollycoddling.

In an interview conducted in the 1990s, Sunil Dutt told Subhash K Jha. “I didn’t think of these things, whether my role was more or less than my leading lady. In Mother India, Nargisji was the hero. I am thankful for the opportunity to play her son in Mother India, that’s how we met and became man and wife.”

Among all the screen heroes, Sunil Dutt was the only true feminist. While several leading men pretend to believe in gender equality their actions prove otherwise.

Celebrating The Birth Anniversary Of The Iconic Nutan, Amitabh Bachchan Speaks Exclusively
Image
Was there an actress more enchanting and engaging than Nutan? One thing is for sure. Nutan was unlike any other screen legend. She wasn’t a conventional beauty like Madhubala, nor as sprightly and spontaneous as Geeta Bali, or as graceful and rhythmic as Vyjayanthimala.

And yet, there was something about Nutan. Something deep and knowledgeable, as though she had unearthed the secret of the universe and couldn’t live with the burden of the knowledge. Born in 1931, Nutan Samarth was introduced to the screen by her mother, the legendary-in-her-own-right Shobhana Samarth, in a film aptly entitled Hamari Beti. Earlier stalwarts like Chandulal Shah and K Asif had offered her roles. But the doting mother took it upon herself to launch her beti.

Ironically, Nutan fell out with her mother over property disputes. The two women didn’t speak to each other for nearly two decades. Nutan was a fascinating mixture of steel and satin.

Spotlight: Nargis Much More To Her Than Mother India
Image
Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on Nargis the reel and the real her in this special feature.

There were so many facets to the iconic Nargis Dutt .

I once remember her son Sanjay telling me, “Others knew her as the joyous, generous, large-hearted woman. For the world, she was Mother India. For me, she was my mom. Yeah, she pampered me silly. She would deny me nothing. Dad was the disciplinarian. For me, she was…everything.”

When we think of Nargis, we think immediately of Mehboob Khan’s Mother India. It is to Nargis’ career what Sholay was to Amjad Khan. Nothing that Nargis did thereafter could compare favourably with Mother India.

Indeed, Nargis in Mother India is a marvel of Nature. She was only 28 when she played mother to Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar so convincingly. To take such a bold risk of playing a mother so early...

20 Years Without Sunil Dutt
Image
Shining the spotlight on the career of the incredible Sunil Dutt, Subhash K Jha walks down memory lane and hears from some of Dutt’s co-stars on why they thought he was so special.

“A true gentleman” is how the legendary Waheeda Rehman describes Sunil Dutt. “He was kind, considerate, and very supportive as a co-star. Dutt Saab ke baare mein jo tareef karen wohkam hai. All of us heroines felt very special in his presence. A wonderful friend, a devoted husband, and a terrific co-star, what more can any woman want? The films I did with Dutt Saab didn’t become big hits. But I cherished every moment of Reshma Aur Shera, which he directed. I even got the National Award for Reshma Aur Shera. Lekin National award unhe milni chahiye. Every frame in Reshma Aur Shera was Dutt Saab’s vision.”

When Vyjayanthimala Had This Badass & Gutsy Motive Behind Refusing A Best Supporting Actress Award For Devdas!
Image
When Vyjayanthimala Turned Down The Award For The Film Devdas(Photo Credit –Wikimedia/Prime Video)

Vyjayanthimala has had a glorious contribution to Indian cinema with her stellar filmography and phenomenal dancing chops. The actress was in the peak of her career during the 1950s and 1960s wherein she was a part of many critically acclaimed and commercially films. These movies not only required her to look beautiful and dance gracefully but her role also had a substance in the storyline.

Some of her memorable performances were for movies like Sadhna, Madhumati, Devdas, Sangam, Ganga Jamuna, Sangharsh, Amrapali, and Hatey Bazarey. When it came to the 1955 film Devdas, Vyjayanthimala starred alongside the legendary Dilip Kumar and essayed the role of Chandramukhi. However, did you know that the actress was offered the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actress for the film which she was quick to refuse? Not only this but...

Close Encounters: When Subhash K Jha Met Yash Chopra For Dil To Pagal Hai
Image
Subhash K Jha reminisces about talking with Yash Chopra about Dil To Pagal Hai which starred Karisma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan. This chat with the iconic director was a week after the release of the film in 1997. Dil To Pagal Hai, which re-opens this Friday , was declared a bumper hit.

Yash Chopra was happy. And not hiding it. When I reached his bungalow, this gracious movie moghul greeted me at the door and welcomed me with a hug. “Please congratulate me. My film is a roaring hit. People just can’t get enough of it. Shah Rukh called five minutes ago to crib he can’t get tickets for his family. I am so happy with the success of Dil To Pagal Hai. It proves that love and love stories will never get outdated. When a film clicks, the entire film industry benefits.”

Yashji had no qualms...

Celebrating 96 Years Of Lekh Tandon’s Underrated Art
Image
In this fascinating feature, Subhash K Jha looks back at the incredible career of writer, director and actor, the brilliant Lekh Tandon.

Recently Anil Kapoor spoke about how the 1980 film Ek Baar Kaho changed the course of his career. The long post made mention of everyone, from the film’s luminous leading lady, Shabana Azmi, to the producers, Rajshri Productions. But Anil forgot to mention Lekh Tandon, who directed Ek Baar Kaho!

This was the story of Lekh Tandon’s life: his films got recognition. He didn’t. Lekh Tandon was one of our most prolific and underrated directors. His range stretched from the playful Professor to the magical Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye to the illogical Jahan Pyar Mile. His most celebrated film was the historical Amrapali (1966), which recreated the legendary romance between Amrapali, the courtesan, played by Vyjayanthimala, and Ajayshatru, the emperor of Magadh, played by Sunil Dutt.

Interesting Unknown Facts About Gulzar’s Aandhi, which was released 50 Years Ago
Image
Gulzar Saab gave us three classics in 1975. Khushboo, Mausam, and Aandhi. Among them, Aandhi was the one that whipped up a serious storm. Subhash K Jha looks back at the film that was released 50 years ago and also shares some unknown facts!

Set in the same year of Sholay and the just released dreaded Emergency came this political fable that was far-reaching in its resonances. Aandhi is the story of Aarti Devi (Suchitra Sen), who arrives in her constituency to fight the elections with Chandra Sen(Om Shivpuri). All hell breaks loose when Aarti Devi is espied with the owner of the hotel where her entourage stays. In a series of typically Gulzarian flashbacks, Aarti Devi re-lives her past with Jk (Sanjeev Kumar).

The film seems to borrow sheaves from Mrs Indira Gandhi’s life story down to an overbearing politician-father (Rehman) whose ambitions on his daughter’s behalf destroy her marriage.

The Blockbuster Heroines of 2025
Image
2025 looks like a bleak year for the leading ladies, at least in Hindi cinema. Worldwide, too, the really brawny ladies are hardly poised to shine this year: Meryl Streep has no release this year, while her desi counterpart Shabana Azmi will be shining on the Ott platform in Farhan Akhtar’s Dabba Cartel. Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Katrina Kaif have zero releases this year. Put simply, there are no big Shero films coming up in 2025.

There are exceptions, though.

1. Alia Bhatt: She is arguably the one Bollywood queen who will lord over the marquee this year, first in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, where she plays the centre of Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal’s attention. Bhansali has modelled Alia’s looks on Vyjayanthimala. In Alpha, which comes at the end of the year, Alia acquires an action Shero’s avatar.

2. Priyanka Chopra: Straddling both the Bollywood and Hollywood hemispheres,...

“Priyanka Chopra’s Short Film Is Fashionably Slumdoggish Poverty Prom” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
A lot of noise is being made in the media for Priyanka Chopra’s name being associated with the short film Anuja. Although several producers’ names are also linked to this mawkish poverty-is-liberating kitsch that the West loves, it is only Ms Chopra’s name that’s being pushed around for grabbing eyeballs.

Anuja, about two impoverished sisters with unbelievably shiny teeth, laughing and sobbing their way through a gauntlet of suffering, is 22 minutes of treacly kitsch. The selfsconscious “poverty realism” of the presentation is just what the West wants to see in India.

The Western Gaze positions two dusky girls, Palak (Ananya Shanbhag) and Anuja (Sajda Pathan), in a tailoring organization founded on child labour and run by a cheesy supervisor (Nagesh Bhosle) straight out of Oliver Twist.

This Mumbai-bred Fagin is dirty and leery. He wants the two sisters in his office early in the morning before the...

Image
Anupamaa’ star Rupali Ganguly’s decision to join the Bjp and enter politics makes her the newest addition to a galaxy of women celebrities from Mumbai’s entertainment world who have taken the political plunge in the tradition of Nargis Dutt and Vyjayanthimala Bali. Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala: Best known for playing Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s show ‘Ramayan’, Chikhlia was the first of the then new-generation TV stars to pursue a political career, albeit briefly. She was elected MP from Baroda on a Bjp ticket in 1991.

Saira Banu recollects cropping Vyjayanthimala’s face out of throwback ‘Madhumati’ picture

Veteran actress Saira Banu, who often shares anecdotal posts on her Instagram account, on Tuesday, shared another throwback story on the photo-sharing app and shared that during her childhood, she was an ardent fan of actress Vyjayanthimala and actor Dilip Kumar.

The veteran actress remembers cutting out posters from magazines and pasting them on her wall from an old photoshoot of the film ‘Madhumati’ which celebrates its 65th anniversary on Tuesday.

Film Review: Dev. D (2009) by Anurag Kashyap
Image
“Devdas,” the 1917 novella by Bengali author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, is one of the most commonly adapted stories in Indian cinema, and the tale's star-crossed romance and harsh critique of contemporary social mores have served as an influence for countless books and films. By the time then up-and-coming auteur Anurag Kashyap began conceiving his own take on “Devdas,” there had been at least fifteen movies directly or indirectly based on the novel, and the wildly popular Shah Rukh Khan version had recently been released in 2002. Not wanting to merely copy what came before, Kashyap decided to alter the story to reflect 21st-century social issues. This resulted in 2009's “Dev. D,” a bold adaptation that brought an arthouse style to general audiences.

Tragedy King Dilip Kumar’s lesser-known onscreen comic side
Image
Playing a boisterous Bohemian, a debonair prince, or a cheerfully irresponsible student, who intentionally provokes his father and fiancee in a court hearing, a rustic, or a rollicking romantic lead with a swagger that Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, and Rajesh Khanna could envy, came natural to him. Yet, in popular memory, Dilip Kumar is only synonymous with the dejected, despondent and (usually) doomed hero.

In his 57 films over his half-century-plus stint in the Hindi film industry, Dilip Kumar is chiefly remembered as the ‘Tragedy King’, battered down by unrequited love, social or political pressure, or other inexorable circumstances.

Whether it was as lush Devdas in the eponymous 1955 film, the unfortunate Prince Marcus of “Yahudi” (1958), the eventually subdued rebellious Prince Salim in “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), the star-crossed Dilip of “Andaz” (1949), and so on, there was usually no happy ending for him.

In his second phase, where he switched to playing more mature roles,...

One of the finest poets of 20th century Urdu literature, Majrooh Sultanpuri was born on this day 101 years ago. Vinod Khanna to play Buddha in Amrapali!
Director Atul Garg has roped in senior star Vinod Khanna to play Buddha in his film, Amrapali, that went on the floors recently. The filmmaker shares that it was the veteran actor’s personality and spiritual background that made him the first choice. “Vinodji has the rare combination of a regal aura and a calm demeanor that can only come with a background of practicing meditation and having a spiritual thought process. There is no actor who would not want to play the role of Buddha, but Vinodji was perfect for the role. It would take any other actor months to prepare and attain the calm and meditative state, but it would be easier for Vinodji as he is already into vipassana. His spiritual background and awareness because of all the time he spent with Jiddu Krishnamurti and Osho makes it easy for him to get into the character. Only...

Dilip Kumar: ‘The Greatest of the Actors’
“We actors are completely oblivious of ourselves and our surroundings while we perform and even when we watch our work in the rushes shown to us, our senses and vision are trained to detect shortcomings more than accomplishments. That’s the only way we know to improve and render performances that come close to our own satisfaction. And it is always the audience who have the absolute right to acclaim or reject our work, however hard we may have worked to achieve perfection and excellence.” – Dilip Kumar in a letter to Amitabh Bachchan on 14 December 2011

One article alone is not enough to write about the profound impact which Mr Dilip Kumar has had on many people and on Indian films. He himself may not have been aware of the fact that working in films would someday result in him being branded by film personalities and by fans worldwide as one...
