Chicago – The comedy icon Lily Tomlin has touched nearly three generations with her skewered view of the world. From “Laugh-In” to “Nashville” to “I Heart Huckabees” to “Grace and Frankie,” Tomlin has entertained, inspired and influenced. She was in Chicago to introduce the film version of “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

Mary Jean “Lily” Tomlin was born in Detroit, and later attended Wayne State University, where she switched her major to theater after auditioning for a play. She started doing stand up comedy in Detroit and eventually New York City in the 1960s, a rarity for women in that era. Speedrunning is one of gaming’s most beloved institutions, and The Legend of Zelda is one of the world’s most beloved games. So, a film about a legendary (pun fully intended) Zelda speedrunner should’ve been a shoo-in for pickup by a major television network.

And it was. PBS snagged Break the Game, a film about record speedrunner Narcissa Wright, to air as part of its series Pov. The series premiered in 1988, and each year airs between 14 and 16 documentaries that “put a human face on contemporary social issues by relating a compelling story in an intimate fashion.” Break the Game was supposed to be the next installment, and was slated to run this month.

But PBS pulled the film because Wright is transgender, director Jane Wagner told Polygon. The network was apparently concerned about backlash, thanks to the Trump government’s notoriously anti-trans stance and its threats against public media organizations.

The blowback continues over the Miami Beach mayor’s threat to close a movie theater over its screening of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land. More than 600 people including several Oscar winners have signed an open letter to the city decrying the potential shutdown of indie theater O Cinema as “an attack on freedom of expression, the right of artists to tell their stories, and a violation of the First Amendment.”

For nearly a decade — since comedy legend Lily Tomlin played a salty septuagenarian in Paul Weitz’s “Grandma” — I’ve been trying to track down a copy of her one-woman show, “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe.”

Well, the search is over.

Last week, on Friday night, Tomlin sat down with “Frankie and Grace” co-star and frequent collaborator Jane Fonda for the first public screening of the newly restored film, which made its debut at RescueFest — IndieCollect’s first-ever showcase of films restored by the organization — in Los Angeles.

Long out of print and nearly always incomplete, the feature version (directed and shot by John Bailey) was released in 1991, six years after Tomlin performed — and perfected — her show live at New York’s Plymouth Theater.

Robert M. Young, the adventurous director who called the shots for Edward James Olmos in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Farrah Fawcett in Extremities and Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta in Dominick and Eugene, died Feb. 6, his son Andrew announced. He was 99.

After getting his start in educational and documentary films, Young also directed the 1969 Peabody-winning CBS telefilm J.T., written by Jane Wagner. Revolving around a Harlem youngster (Kevin Hooks) and an alley cat, it bowed on a Saturday afternoon and was repeated in primetime as the network preempted its most popular show, Gunsmoke.

Young also served as cinematographer, producer and co-writer with director Michael Roemer on the critically acclaimed drama Nothing But a Man (1964), featuring Ivan Dixon and jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln as a struggling young Black couple in Alabama.

Saturday Night Live alum Cecily Strong shares why she can no longer watch the show. Joining the long-running NBC variety show for season 38, the former Second City performer quickly became a standout repertory player for Saturday Night Live. Lasting over nine seasons, Strong departed the show mid-season 48, making her the longest-serving female cast member in the show's history.

While on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live talk show (via ComicBook.com), Strong revealed she can't watch the current season of Saturday Night Live. Leslie Jordan, the goofy comic actor perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning turn as Beverley Leslie, the cynical foil to Megan Mullally’s Karen Walker, on Will & Grace, has died. He was 67.

Jordan was at the wheel of a BMW when he crashed into the side of a building at Cahuenga Boulevard and Romaine Street in Hollywood on Monday morning. He was declared dead at the scene and could have suffered a medical emergency beforehand.

Jordan recurs as Phil, the gay baker at the café owned by Mayim Bialik’s character, on the Fox sitcom Call Me Kat, which returned for its third season last month. He appeared in all five of the new season’s episodes so far.

His other recent work includes turns on FX’s American Horror Story — playing different characters over three seasons — and the 2018-19 Fox sitcom The Cool Kids.

Aside from taking a bow (or three) and receiving applause, actors don’t typically address the audience following a stage performance.

But last night’s production of the one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum was not an average night at the theater for Cecily Strong, which is why she took 30 seconds at the end of a very enthusiastic standing ovation to make an announcement.

“I want to acknowledge one very special person who’s here tonight — our original Trudy, our hero, the incredible Lily Tomlin,” she said, her voice quivering with emotion as she shouted out the comedy legend, a reveal that was greeted by shock and awe from the sold-out crowd on opening night. The room responded by intensifying an already electric round of applause as guests scanned the seats to locate Tomlin.

Cecily Strong will soon be hitting the stage in Los Angeles.

The Emmy-nominated Saturday Night Live star will perform in Jane Wagner’s one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at the Mark Taper Forum. Directed by Leigh Silverman, the show begins previews Sept. 21 with an official opening set for Sept. 28, running through Oct. 23. Produced in association with SNL honcho Lorne Michaels and veteran stage producer Bill Damaschke, the show will be presented in association with The Shed.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe follows the “seemingly disparate lives of a punk-rock rebel, a socialite, a feminist and a deceptively insightful observer, among many others.” It earned Lily Tomlin a Tony Award for best actress in a play in 1986, and Strong knows the material well as the new production was originally produced by The Shed...

Viewed with 20/20 hindsight, all of history appears inevitable simply because it went to the trouble of happening. Saturday Night Live‘s Cecily Strong will make her New York stage debut this December in an Off Broadway production of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Jane Wagner’s classic 1977 solo play that starred Lily Tomlin and was made into a 1991 film.

Navarro and his team quickly pivoted to putting together a virtual event. As a leading digital media entrepreneur, Navarro knew the virtual space well and it was his mission even before the pandemic to expand Outfest’s digital footprint.

Cynthia Nixon will direct a 40th anniversary Broadway production of Jane Chambers’ landmark lesbian stage drama Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, to be produced by Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner and Harriet Newman Leve.

The producers have not yet announced casting, venue or timeline.

Set in 1980 at the lesbian beach haven called Bluefish Cove, the play follows Lil Zalinski and her close-knit group of friends who summer at the colony each year. The arrival of a newcomer shakes up the group, as does Lil’s cancer diagnosis.

The play was first staged Off Broadway in 1980 at the Actors’ Playhouse, starring Jean Smart as Lil. Playwright Chambers was diagnosed with cancer in 1981, and died in 1983.

Lily Tomlin won this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and accepted her trophy the only way she knows how — by being her quirky, totally lovable self and delivering a handful of the most memorable quotes of the night.
