An Argument Between Alan Alda And This Mash Co-Star Actually Made It Into An Episode
Image
Alan Alda and co-star Mike Farrell argued over the ethics of a surgery scene in Mash season 7, which was written into an episode. Farrell argued his character B.J. wouldn't take part in an unnecessary surgery, even if it involved saving lives. This clash between Farrell and Alda added tension and moral complexity to "Preventative Medicine."

A classic Mash episode was improved by a genuine argument between Alan Alda and a co-star over the ethics involved in a key surgery sequence. Many Mash actors exited the show during its early years, despite the medical sitcom becoming a runaway hit for CBS. These exits accidentally added to the show's longevity, since the ensemble was periodically refreshed with great new characters like Potter (Harry Morgan) or Major Winchester (David Ogden Stiers).

Wayne Rogers' Trapper left Mash following season 3, with the actor feeling his role kept being diminished by the increasing focus put on Alda's Hawkeye.

The Medically Unethical M*A*S*H Scene Mike Farrell Made A Stink About
Image
Five decades ago, "M*A*S*H" all but invented the TV dramedy. There had been a few shows before the hit wartime sitcom that straddled the line between inspiring laughter and tears, and there would be plenty more after, but few have ever mixed the two seemingly contradictory genres as perfectly as "M*A*S*H" did.

Across its eleven seasons, the members of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital partook in plots both side-splittingly funny — prank wars! Traveling long johns! Rib cravings! — and heart-wrenchingly somber. Through both its funniest moments and its darkest, the show adhered to a strong anti-war attitude, frequently focusing on the senseless loss of armed conflict and the zealous, jingoistic leaders who let it happen.

One such episode is "Preventative Medicine," a season 7 outing in which Hawkeye (Alan Alda) decides to medically sideline a bloodthirsty front-line commander who has a disturbingly high casualty rate. Over the course of the episode,...

Clint Eastwood proves again that he Owns the western genre with this odd tale of land reform insurrection and establishment blowback, in New Mexico of 1906. To direct the script by the great Elmore Leonard, Eastwood brought in the western movie legend John Sturges. But Sturges discovered that collaboration now meant acceding to whatever the star wanted. The beautifully filmed movie falls apart even though Sturges saved the day with an 11th hour stunt action climax.

Westworld (1973)
I, Robot: How 'Westworld' Went From Seventies Blockbuster to HBO Show
Westworld (1973)
Few ideas survive the times that spawned them, but Westworld, the 1973 Michael Crichton movie about an Old West amusement park populated by lifelike robots, is good enough that Hollywood's been coming back to it for more than 40 years. The original film, which was MGM's biggest box-office success of the year, spawned a sequel and a short-lived TV series; talk of a remake had been floated around for years, with everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Quentin Tarantino being namedropped around the project at various points. (There was even a porn version,...

Westworld (1973)
HBO orders 'Westworld' adaptation from J.J. Abrams
Westworld (1973)
Michael Crichton’s cult classic Westworld, which imagines a Wild West-themed vacation destination inhabited by robots, is coming to HBO.

The pay network gave a pilot production commitment to the project from J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest), and producer Jerry Weintraub (Behind the Candelabra).

The logline for the adaptation of the 1973 film reads: “Set in the amazing world dreamt up by Michael Crichton, Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.”

Nolan and Lisa Joy will write and executive produce the series; Nolan is set to direct the pilot.

Roger Corman's Deathsport and Battle Truck Explode onto DVD
With Piranha and Humanoids from the Deep getting all the love lately in the news, we'd be remiss if we did not mention two other Corman cult classics that are poised to make their special edition double-feature DVD debut from Shout! Factory.

From the Press Release:

Brace yourself for twice the fun, twice the adrenaline rush, and twice the traction as Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation, is set to release a dynamic duo of Roger Corman classics on one double-feature collector’s edition DVD. August 3, 2010, will see the release of Deathsport/Battle Truck Collector’s Edition, which marks the first time Deathsport is being presented in a widescreen format as well as the first-ever DVD release of Battle Truck (released theatrically as Warlords of the 21st Century). This double-barreled dose of high-octane excitement decisively marks the latest summer installment from fan favorite Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series.
