A complete reboot with no connection to the original series, The Waltons' Homecoming will mark the 50th anniversary of The Homecoming: A Christmas Story. That was the TV movie that served as the launchpad for The Waltons by introducing the family to TV audiences in December 1971. It was not initially intended to spawn a TV series, but the success of the movie resulted in the show entering production at CBS. It spanned nine seasons and spawned several movies that continued the story.

To celebrate Mother’s Day 2020, TVLine is catching up with iconic TV moms from well-remembered series of the past.

First up is The Waltons‘ Michael Learned, who as Olivia Walton lorded over a brood of seven kids, with husband John (played by Ralph Waite), in Earl Hamner Jr.’s TV adaptation of his novel Spencer’s Mountain. Following the titular family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II, The Waltons ran for nine seasons (starting in 1972 on CBS) and spawned a half-dozen TV-movies — the last of which, A Walton Easter, aired in April 1997.

Aidan Quinn (CBS’ Elementary) has been cast in a lead role of Signature Theatre’s upcoming Off Broadway revival of Horton Foote’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Young Man From Atlanta.

The production will be directed by Michael Wilson (The Orphans’ Home Cycle), and is set to begin previews at the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center on Nov. 5, with an opening night of Nov. 24. The engagement runs through Dec. 8.

Signature announced the casting today. In addition to Quinn, the previously announced production will feature Devon Abner, Dan Bittner, Pat Bowie, Kristine Nielsen, Jon Orsini and Larry Pine. Additional casting will be determined at a later date.

Bones signs off on Tuesday, after 12 seasons of crime solving, evidence examining, blood, guts and, most importantly, bones. But at the core of the long-running Fox procedural -- the “heart of the matter,” if you will -- was a partnership between forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).

From their first episode together, Brennan and Booth’s dynamic was electric, and while the will-they-or-won’t-they of it all took nearly seven seasons to sort out (more if you count that they don’t actually tie the knot until season nine), their relationship kept fans hooked for all 245 episodes. Did you believe that Brennan was actually jealous of Daisy and Angela’s success?

Ashley: I did at first, but then I started getting suspicious about halfway through that Brennan actually had something to do with it for both of them.

Pam: Yes, I bought into it as this has been her character. I like that she is written that way, but was happily surprised to find she is changing over time. It is not only refreshing but very sweet. She continues to delight and surprise her family and friends, and above all the audience.

Goodnight, John-Boy. Earl Hamner Jr. creator of The Waltons TV series and real-life counterpart to the John-Boy Walton (Richard Thomas) character has died at the age of 92. Premiering September 14, 1972, the series ran nine seasons before being cancelled by CBS. The TV series finale episode, "The Revel" aired June 1, 1991. It was followed up by several Waltons TV movies.

The Waltons was based on the Hamners' life in Schuyler, Virginia, and the main characters were inspired by the creator's family members. Last season was a turbulent one on NCIS. The show was faced with the challenge of writing off the character of Ziva David and adding the character of Nsa analyst, and new NCIS "probie," Eleanor "Ellie" Bishop (Emily Wickersham). While the finale is usually a cliffhanger, last season NCIS instead paid homage to the death of actor Ralph Waite, who portrayed Gibbs' father, Jackson Gibbs. It was an emotional episode that, in my opinion, is hard for true fans of the show to forget.

This season of NCIS kicks off with "Twenty Klicks," which finds Gibbs and McGee going to Russia to bring home an NCIS computer specialist with classified information when their mission goes awry.

As NCIS chugs into its 12th season Tuesday (8/7c, CBS), creator Gary Glasberg says he's taking a back-to-basics approach for the upcoming year. After so many major event episodes last season — the departure of Ziva (Cote de Pablo), the introduction of Bishop (Emily Wickersham), the NCIS: New Orleans backdoor pilot, and a tribute episode to Ralph Waite — Glasberg says he's excited to be entering a more character-driven run.

Coming off of what showrunner Gary Glasberg has called a “tumultuous” Season 11 — during which two casting changes took place, the seeds were planted for a New Orleans spin-off and the passing of Ralph Waite was written in — CBS’ NCIS is back in “classic” form, Sean Murray tells TVLine.

The clink won’t be kind to Booth when Bones return this fall, the show’s stars Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz and executive producer Stephen Nathan revealed at Comic-Con on Friday.

The action will pick up four months after the events of the Season 9 finale, with Booth feeling the effects of a life behind bars. “We will see a different side of him,” Boreanaz previewed, adding that his alter ego will suffer from Ptsd.

“He’s definitely in a state of confusion with his present state of mind, with his state in the bureau, with where he is with Brennan,...
