How ‘For All Mankind’ Rewrites Gender Politics Through Queer Identity and Female Power in Space
Image
In For All Mankind, when the Soviet Union lands a female cosmonaut on the Moon, President Nixon demands that NASA do the same. This results in the creation of a fictional initiative called the Women Astronauts Program. As the name suggests, it allows female candidates to participate in spaceflight training. Some of the women who join are Danielle Poole (Krys Marshall), Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones), Molly Cobb (Sonya Walger), and Ellen Waverly (Jodi Balfour).

The Apple TV+ original show reimagines an alternate world by changing this one moment in history. The show sets off a chain of events that forces NASA to diversify its operations and adopt gender equality long before it happened in reality. The show introduces and centers storylines of the first American woman on the Moon and a closeted astronaut who struggles with keeping her identity a secret in a world where she can lose her career because of it.

Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Goes Full Lost With The Show's Best Episode Yet
Image
Your outie is kind and doesn't divulge any of the major spoilers from the following article for the latest episode of "Severance."

"Severance" has always flirted heavily with the notion of becoming the heir apparent to the throne left behind by "Lost" -- a similar mystery-box experience about a group of characters thrown into strange circumstances and that seems to uncover more questions than answers with every passing season. Season 2 has somehow raised the bar of quality even higher than it already was the first time around, diving deeper into the complex world-building details of this workplace satire and making us fully invested in our quartet of heroes as we learn more about their inner lives. But episode 7, titled "Chikhai Bardo," might ultimately go down as the moment when the creative team took the torch from "Lost" showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and made it official.

This very welcome...

Lost: "Not Penny's Boat" Is Its Biggest Moment (Not "We Have To Go Back")
Image
Many believe "We Have To Go Back" was the show's pivotal twist but, in reality, it's the "Not Penny's Boat" moment that changed Lost forever, causing the death of Charlie and spinning the narrative on its head. When Lost first aired in 2004, it was a show with a relatively grounded premise about a group of survivors lost on an island after a plane crash. The remaining passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 not only endured the wilderness of the island but many inexplicable occurrences everything from smoke monsters to polar bears and mysterious underground vaults.

Lost had many twists and turns, but the "Not Penny's Boat" reveal in the Lost season 3 final was a true game-changer. When it seemed that a rescue boat might be close to the island, Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) set out to find a way to get a message to it. Charlie was a central character on Lost, a...

Why Dominic Monaghan's Charlie Was Killed Off In Lost Season 3
Image
While the show has a lot of heartbreaking storylines, when Charlie dies on Lost, it was a particularly heartbreaking moment that devastated many fans. Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) is a musician and when he boards Flight 815, he is struggling with his addiction to heroin, which continues on the island itself. Charlie dies in the emotional season 3 finale while trying to help Desmond Hume (Henry Ian Cusick) communicate with Penny Widmore (Sonya Walger) about an escape, which cements his character arc as a kind-hearted and loyal person who will do anything for those he cares about.

Charlie's death is harrowing and his final heroic warning of "Not Penny's Boat" before he dies is unforgettable. While several Lost characters die in heartbreaking ways, Charlie is aware that dying is part of his destiny, and that sets this moment apart. Along with the flashbacks, flashforwards, and flash-sideways, Charlie's Lost demise is still one...

The Best Episode Of Lost Is Missing All But 2 Characters Who Crashed On The Plane
Image
"The Constant" explores time travel and Desmond's relationship with Penny. Despite being Lost's best episode, "The Constant" only features Sayid and Jack from the original cast - and in limited roles. "The Constant" serves as a pivotal turning point in the series, establishing Lost's time travel rules and Desmond's connection to Penny.

Lost is about the survivors of Oceanic flight 815, but only two of them actually appear in the show's greatest episode. Lost season 4, episode 5, "The Constant," delves into time travel and its consequences when present-day Desmond Hume (Henry Ian Cusick) suddenly starts flashing back to his younger self in 1996. His mind flicking between the past and 2004, Desmond must figure out how to anchor himself in the correct timeline before becoming another victim of the notoriously turbulent Lost cast.

"The Constant" received critical acclaim and was nominated for numerous awards, including Emmy nominations for its cinematography and musical score.

For All Mankind: The Patty Doyle Character Explained (& Where You've Seen The Actor)
Image
Patty Doyle's death in training leads to NASA accepting female astronauts, a pivotal moment in For All Mankind. Cass Bugg's portrayal of Patty is heroic and tragic, showcasing her talent for more significant roles. Patty is Bugg's most significant performance to date, though she does have a noteworthy role as Jeanine Albemarle in Night Sky.

Patty Doyle (Cass Bugg) is a guest star in For All Mankind, and viewers may recognize the actor from some of her previous roles. For All Mankind is an alternate-history sci-fi series about the space race that ponders what would have happened if the race to the moon had just a few key events changed. Premiering on Apple TV+ in 2019, each season of the show takes place in a separate decade, which keeps the story moving but also means that occasionally characters and storylines can be easily forgotten as they're whisked into a new time period.

While we’re told Donovan will play a disgraced millionaire involved with art forgery, all other roles are under wraps. Forge‘s leads are Kelly Marie Tran, Andie Ju and Brandon Soo Hoo, as we were first to report.

‘New Life’ Ending Explained & Movie Recap: Did Molly Capture Jessica?
Image
A good thriller works best when it keeps its proverbial cards hidden, which is to say, by keeping viewers in the dark about vital information to toy with their expectations involving the narrative—only to drop it in the most pivotal moment, which makes the experience feel worthwhile. The deliberate delay heightens the tension and pokes at the audience’s curiosity for just long enough to be complemented by a satisfying twist or cathartic moment. Unfortunately, John Rosman’s thriller New Life takes the majority of the movie to hold on to the surprise, which turns out to be more bewildering and nonsensical than surprising. Additionally, not giving enough space to flesh out the characters makes the connection with the audience nonexistent as well, resulting in a rancid thriller that neither thrills nor shocks.

The creative drawbacks feel even more disappointing after realizing that the plot of New Life could...

‘New Life’ Review
Image
Stars: Hayley Erin, Sonya Walger, Tony Amendola, Jeb Berrier, Blaine Palmer, Betty Moyer, Ayanna Berkshire | Written and Directed by John Rosman

Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.

It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. She lets herself into her house and cleans herself up. She barely managed to wash and change before she sees armed men in her kitchen. She lets herself out a window and, since they apparently never learned about guarding a perimeter,...

New Life – Review
Image
Sonya Walger in New Life. Courtesy of Brainstorm Media

New Life is a drama that opens with a young woman, Jessie (Hayley Erin), running through the woods, head bleeding. She’s obviously escaping from someone or something, but we won’t find out why she’s in this pickle until about halfway through the film. What we next learn is that she’s trying to flee to safety in Canada. Meanwhile, some unidentified entity with extensive resources hires a first-rate tracker (Sonya Walger) to catch her before she can get to the border. Walger doesn’t learn who she’s actually working for or why they are so hell-bent on catching her until well into the film when we do.

Jessie seems like a nice young woman to viewers and to all she meets in her northward journey through rural areas. There’s suspense in who will help or harm her,...

The show’s 2010 finale finally put its many mysteries to rest, but may have left viewers with more questions than ever.

Now 20 years after Lost season 1 kicked off...

“There’ll Be Justice!”: Asteroid Heist Fallout In For All Mankind Season 5 Teased By Showrunners
Image
"Justice" will be served for the asteroid heist in season 5 of For All Mankind, with consequences for those involved. The Goldilocks asteroid will continue to be a point of contention and impact the lives of characters on Mars and Earth. Unanswered questions, such as how humanity's future on Mars will progress, need to be addressed in season 5 as the story expands.

For All Mankind showrunners Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert have teased "justice" for the astroid heist in season 5, hinting at fallout from the event. Season 4 of the sci-fi drama saw a team of astronauts steal the Goldilocks asteroid, an object that multiple world governments had been trying to get their hands on. This ultimately led to Margo's arrest, since she admitted to her involvement in allowing the astroid into Mars' orbit.

Speaking with TVLine, Nedivi and Wolpert revealed there will be consequences for the astroid heist in For...

For All Mankind Season 4's Shocking Ending Explained By Dani Actor
Image
This article contains Spoilers for For All Mankind's season 4 finale, "Perestroika."

The shocking For All Mankind season 4 finale shows that nobody is spared, adding danger and tension to the show, says actor Krys Marshall. Dani's near-death experience brings the people of Happy Valley together, uniting them after a season of inequality and rivalry. Dani's survival in the season 4 finale sets up potential storylines for her character in season 5.

For All Mankind's shocking season 4 finale is explained by actor Krys Marshall. Heading into the now completed fourth installment of the alternate history Apple TV+ sci-fi drama, For All Mankind had already done away with several prominent characters. That adds an element of danger to the show. It added to the sense that Marshall's character, Danielle Poole, might actually die when she was shot during an effort to break up a brawl.

In an interview with The A.V. Club, Marshall...

‘For All Mankind’ EP Previews New Challenges as Series Races Into the Future for Season 4
Image
Countdown to an adrenaline rush! The fast-moving fourth season of the alt-history drama, For All Mankind, set in a world where the space race never ended relaunches in the year 2003 with a harrowing mission commanded by brave astronaut Ed Baldwin (a further aged-up Joel Kinnaman), now the solar system’s gutsiest grandad. (Credit: Apple TV+) Eight years have passed since we last saw Ed, one of the first Americans in space during the 1960s. In the Season 3 finale, he transported his pregnant researcher daughter Kelly (Cynthy Wu) in a risky flight from the planet’s surface to an orbiting ship so she could give birth safely. He then got the shocking news that his ex-wife, entrepreneur Karen (Shantel VanSanten), had been killed by a terrorist bomb at the Johnson Space Center, along with the first American woman on the moon, Molly Cobb (Sonya Walger). Surviving the tragedy — but assumed dead...

Frightfest 2023: ‘New Life’ Review
Image
Stars: Sonya Walger, Hayley Erin, Tony Amendola | Written and Directed by John Rosman

New Life is a low-key ground-floor beginning of-the-apocalypse thriller. A character-driven piece of one woman’s fight to evade capture and another woman’s race to find her. Told from two very uniquely distinctive perspectives worlds apart yet not so different.

As a lover of the “end of the world” genre I’m always keen to see projects dealing with the beginnings of the event. Yes, sometimes times they can be snooze fests like Side Effects but when done right you get movies like Outbreak. You could also go full musical and give the world Anna and the Apocalypse (my favourite Xmas movie). Where does New Life fit in though?

We follow Jessie (Hayley Erin) who after a chance meeting with a pooch that has recently escaped the lab, she unknowingly contracts a rare string of the Ebola virus.

New Life Director John Rosman Discusses His Process and Influences
Image
Filmmaker John Rosman began his career in journalism doing short-form documentary work, but it didn't take long for him to pivot into creative filmmaking. After studying documentary filmmaking in college and learning how to edit through that process, he found work on the side with music videos, which opened new doors for him in the world of short film. "I just really fell in love with kind of the productions elements," he explained. Working as a freelancer, he was able to find time to chip away at his debut feature-length genre piece.

That film, New Life, had its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal this year. We had a chance to sit down with Rosman during the festival to discuss the film, his influences, and his approach to filmmaking.

A Love for the Collaborative Process of Filmmaking

In speaking with Rosman, it quickly becomes clear that when it comes to filmmaking,...

New Life Review | A Cat and Mouse Thriller with a Horror Twist
Image
New Life, the debut feature-length offering from writer/director Jonathan Rosman, is yet another case of a film that's difficult to talk about without spoiling some of its key surprises. It's a genre film, of that there is little doubt, but it takes its time before becoming a horror movie and getting to the real frights, spending much of its first act instead resembling more of a traditional cat and mouse thriller, a la The Fugitive.

New Life Expertly Creates Tension and Withholds Information

The film opens on Jessica (Hayley Erin), whose face is covered in blood that doesn't appear to be hers. She's on the run from someone or something, and she's scared. That's pretty much all we know about her for quite some time.

We get a little more overall information when we meet the film's other lead, Elsa, played by Sonya Walger. Elsa is a senior government manhunter,...

Hayley Erin in New Life

Recently screened at Fantasia and now on its way to Frightfest, John Rosman’s New Life follows a woman called Jessica – and for the first 40 minutes or so, that’s all we know. It’s a film which packs in some major twists and turns. Whilst i strove to keep my review spoiler-free, there are some minor spoilers in this interview, so if you want to see the film completely fresh, you may prefer to wait and read this afterwards. If you do choose to read on, don’t worry too much – the film will still have some surprises in store for you.

One of those spoilers is that Elsa is afflicted by Als (more commonly known in...

New Life teaser trailer: Sonya Walger, Hayley Erin horror thriller is making the festival rounds
Image
Nearly a year and a half has passed since we heard that Sonya Walger (For All Mankind) had signed on to star in the cat and mouse horror thriller New Life with Hayley Erin of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, and Tony Amendola – who was in both the Conjuring Universe film Annabelle and the Conjuring Universe adjacent The Curse of La Llorona. New Life recently made its premiere at the Fantasia film festival, where our own Tyler Nichols got to check it out, resulting in a 7/10 review you can read Here. We included the teaser trailer in that review, but just in case you overlooked it, this seemed like a good time to put a spotlight on it, since New Life is now set to screen at FrightFest in London in just a week and a half, on Friday, August 25th.

This film marks the feature debut of writer/director John Rosman.

New Life (Fantasia) Review
Image
Plot: A mysterious woman on the run, and the resourceful fixer assigned to bring her in. Their two unique stories inextricably link, as the stakes of the pursuit rise to apocalyptic proportions.

Review: After 2020, it’s hard not to watch a movie about a deadly virus and be thrust back to that time. An indirect result of that year is a certain reality to any film involving a pandemic. Before, when things would ramp up in a movie like Outbreak, I’d often roll my eyes at how quickly things get out of control. But 2020 proved that we as a society care more about our comforts than keeping the world alive. With this in mind, New Life had me intrigued from the beginning, as there are few things that are scarier than an apocalyptic virus.

New Life puts the viewer in a state of confusion at first. We’re following...

For All Mankind Season 4 Will See Less Of One Original Character Despite Big Season 3 Story
Image
Warning: Spoilers for For All Mankind Season 3 finale - "Stranger In A Strange Land"

Where to Watch Powered by Jodi Balfour, who plays Ellen Waverly in For All Mankind, will not be a series regular in season 4 but will appear in some capacity. Balfour's exit is significant as her character's story was left unresolved in the season 3 finale after she comes out as a lesbian and faces pressure to resign. Other cast members have also made their exit, and season 4 will introduce new characters played by Daniel Stern, Svetlana Efremova, Tyner Rushing, and Toby Kebbell.

For All Mankind will see less of an original cast member, as one character is set to appear in a guest-starring capacity for the upcoming season. The acclaimed Apple TV+ series, which was created by the trio of Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, takes place of alternate history by imagining what might've...

For All Mankind Shocker: Jodi Balfour Out as Series Regular
Jodi Balfour
When For All Mankind Season 4 gets underway on Apple TV+, viewers will see less of one of its most popular stars.

TV Line reports that Jodi Balfour is bowing out of the alt-history drama as a series regular.

Balfour, who plays Ellen, is expected to appear in some capacity.

The series has said goodbye to some fantastic people over the years, and something tells us we'll be saying goodbye to more as the years in the narrative go on.

Ellen has been a key player since For All Mankind Season 1, and her presence has been felt throughout three glorious seasons.

Knowing that we'll be seeing less of her doesn't give us much excitement for For All Mankind Season 4.

As you'll recall, the criminally underrated series ended its third season by writing out Shantel VanSanten's Karen Baldwin and Sonya Walger's Molly Cobb.

The series has had a wonderful tapestry...

For All Mankind is losing another formidable woman.

Jodi Balfour, who plays NASA astronaut-turned-President Ellen Waverly, will not return as a series regular for Season 4, TVLine has learned exclusively. The actress will, however, appear in some capacity, we’re told, presumably to bring closure to her storyline. An Apple TV+ rep declined to comment.

New Life Review: A Blistering Horror Mystery Packed With Tension [Fantasia Fest 2023]
Image
John Rosman's "New Life" is a blistering multidimensional thriller that hits from all directions — the kind of debut filmmakers dream about. It messes with you psychologically, stokes existential dread, and drips with bodily liquids worth repulsive physical effects. Where some first features hinge on a sole signature that pulls audiences through less accomplished elements, "New Life" exposes few weaknesses. Rossman creates a small-scale apocalypse movie that becomes achingly intimate despite the threat of worldwide eradication, weighing the disease of one against the infection of many in ways unexplored by notable comparison points like Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" or the Pastor brothers' "Carriers."

Sonya Walger stars as all-star fixer Elsa Gray, whose sunset years have been tainted by an Als diagnosis. Hayley Erin plays Jessica Murdock, a mysterious woman running from Elsa toward the Canadian border. It's all we know at the film's onset — Jessica is fleeing from an ailing special agent,...

New Life - Jennie Kermode - 18543
Hayley Erin
When a film opens with an obviously frightened woman (Hayley Erin) trying to make her way across country without being seen, two things happen. Firstly, most people develop an immediate feeling of sympathy for her. Secondly, one starts to pay attention to the small things. What is she wearing? What is she carrying? What does she pay attention to? perhaps, somewhere in all this, there are clues which can tell us who she is and what’s going on.

If you pay the same kind of attention to her pursuer (Sonya Walger), one gesture will stand out early on: her hand cramping up as she’s sitting alone in her car. This is the first real clue we get as to the underlying theme of the film.

Given that the film is built upon layers of mystery which are peeled back one by one, one hesitates to say too much more about the plot,...
