The 2018 Mortal Engines movie was seemingly destined to pave the way for a full-fledged franchise, but many factors prevented the film from succeeding critically and commercially. Almost a decade before it hit the big screens, Peter Jackson had already set his eyes on Philip Reeve's novel Mortal Engines and began its production. The flywheels of the movie's development really started moving in 2016 when Christian Rivers hopped on board to make his directorial feature film debut while Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens worked on the film's script.
Although the film went through some ordinary production hiccups, its filming was finished within four months. With a fairly hefty production budget of $100150 million, the movie was all set to leave its mark at the global box office and set the stage for many more installments. However, many issues surrounding Mortal Engines' development eventually became evident when it finally premiered on...

Millie Gibson this weekend offered her heartfelt thoughts on the Doctor Who episode that stirred opinions in fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise.
The “fifth” episode (including “The Church on Ruby Road”) of “Season 1” (or Season 14) opened with the Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Gibson) setting foot in Wales, immediately after which the former accidentally stepped his foot on a fairy circle comprised of string, charms and notes. The up-and-coming actress Daniela Melchior has taken her career leaping in the entertainment industry by scoring roles in two of the industry’s most dominating franchises, i.e., the DC Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides these, she also scored the role of Ellie, one of the main characters in the recently released Road House remake.
Daniela Melchior in Road House.
But if there’s one franchise she looks forward to returning to, that’s James Gunn’s Dcu. In fact, she even mentioned that she is most certainly “open” to reprising her iconic role from 2021’s critically-commended masterpiece, The Suicide Squad: That of Ratcatcher 2. However, that event seems inevitably unlikely because of one of Gunn’s decisions for the DC reboot.

David Ayer continues to be optimistic that his cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad will see the light of day.
The director said in a new interview that he’s “hopeful” that his version of the DC film will eventually materialize despite some powers preventing it from happening.
“I’m going to be hopeful. You know, there are a lot of people that are invested in certain narratives that don’t want it to see the light of day,” Ayer told Total Film in an interview. “So there’s an immense political headwind against it, because if that cut were made public, the cowardliness and the whole just general shittiness of how the film’s been treated, and how the actors have had this great work that they’d done taken away…”
He continued, “That narrative blows up once people see the movie. But it’s coming. Something’s going to happen.

David Ayer, the director of 2016’s Suicide Squad, is looking back at the DC film and opening up about one of his creative decision regrets.
Jared Leto portrayed supervillain Joker in the comic book-based movie and his version of the character had the word “damaged” tattooed across his forehead, an idea that Ayer proposed.
“I own the tattoo idea 100%. It was my choice,” Ayer shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “Original idea is it would say ‘Blessed’ and not ‘Damaged.'”
He continued, “Now having said that — I regret that decision. It created acrimony and division. Not every idea is a good idea. And I’ll just be in the corner here while the internet slaps me around for this post.”

When Suicide Squad released in 2016, while it may have gone on to garner over $750 million at the worldwide box office, it failed to win much love from the critics and many fans. But even as the Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn is ready to drop his reboot of the film, The Suicide Squad, he finds his predecessor's work a success and even recently defended that Ayer "deserves to be lauded" for it."
Though David Ayer's Suicide Squad was, undoubtedly, a commercial success, it failed to impress the critics who made their displeasure known about how the plot progressed and the way the characters were handled. Given the major bashing it received, Suicide Squad getting the pre-announced sequel seemed like a distant dream. It went through multiple directors after even Ayer gave up hope on the project and dropped it.

New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) CEO Annabelle Sheehan believes there are currently two global drivers of change in the screen industry.
The first is the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, AppleTV+ and Amazon – the latter of which has just confirmed it will shoot the series The Lord of the Rings in Nz.
The second is a push towards a more diverse and inclusive industry, both behind and in front of the camera.
It’s this second driver that the Nzfc’s upcoming global summit Power of Inclusion will seek to explore head on in partnership with Walt Disney Co. and Women in Film and Television (Wift) International.
The October event has already attracted an impressive array of both international and local speakers including actress and activist Geena Davis; Black-ish and Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi; director Niki Caro, Pose creator Steven Canals, The Black List...

Universal and Mrc have released the official trailer for Mortal Engines, the post-apocalyptic thriller based Philip Reeve’s award-winning Scholastic book series. This is a project Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have been working on for years, bringing their Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit cohort Philippa Boyens aboard to co-write the script and tapping Jackson’s longtime VFX partner Christian Rivers (an Oscar winner for King Kong) to direct in his feature helming debut.

Universal has released a unique first trailer for “Mortal Engines,” depicting a world of predator cities existing thousands of years after current civilization has been destroyed by a cataclysmic event.
“We have to stop London before it destroys us” is one of the lines in the FX-heavy footage, released Tuesday.
Peter Jackson is on board as a producer and screenwriter, re-teaming with “Hobbit” screenwriters with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens in “Mortal Engines,” set in a steampunk world where entire cities have been mounted on wheels and prey on one another. It’s Jackson’s first feature project since the completion of the Hobbit trilogy in 2014.
Robert Sheehan stars as museum apprentice Tom Natsworthy from the city of London who finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive assassin Hester Shaw, played by Hera Hilmar, who’s out to avenge the death of her mother.

After years of developing the Philip Reeve book series Mortal Engines, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have set the project at MRC and Universal, with their Hobbit VFX protege Christian Rivers making his feature directorial debut. Production will begin next spring in New Zealand. MRC and Universal will co-finance what they hope will spark another potential franchise for Jackson and Walsh, who adapted the script with Philippa Boyens, their writing partner on both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Scholastic published the first book in 2001 and four followed in the sci-fi fantasy series.
It is the first project for Jackson and Walsh at Universal since 2005’s King Kong, and then Jackson followed by creating King Kong: 360 3-D for Universal Studios Hollywood in 2010. Since completing The Hobbit, Jackson has busied himself on running Weta Digital and Stone Street Studios, and helping to design a war museum in Wellington to commemorate the thousands of Kiwis who fought and died during World War I. Jackson and Walsh first got involved in Mortal Engines back in 2009, when it was speculated he might direct. Instead, he has given that task to Rivers, who has a close 25-year association with Jackson that started with Story Board artist. He graduated to visual effects positions on all Jackson’s pictures. On The Hobbit trilogy, he was Splinter Unit Director (Andy Serkis was Second Unit Director and Rivers headed another unit) and most recently Rivers was second unit director on Pete’s Dragon. Rivers won an Oscar in the Best Achievement in Visual Effects category for King Kong. This is the first script collaboration by Jackson, Walsh and Boyens that Jackson hasn’t directed himself.
“Christian is one of my closest collaborators,” says Jackson in a statement. “The combination of emotion and jaw-dropping visuals in Mortal Engines makes this the perfect movie for his move into feature directing. What Christian intends to do with Philip Reeve’s terrific story is going to result in an original and spectacular movie. I wish I could see it tomorrow!”
Reeve’s book has a storyline that sounds a bit like Mad Max: Fury Road; only here, it’s the geography that moves in a post apocalyptic world. It’s a distant future where the cities of earth roam the globe on huge wheels, consuming smaller towns and processing all reusable materials to create power to run the engines that make the cities mobile and able to gobble up more and more of the planet’s dwindling resources. London’s mayor has bigger plans than the domination of a small town and several young people try to stop him. Universal will distribute worldwide. Ken Kamins, longtime manager of Jackson, Walsh and Boyens, brought the book to MRC, which now has another big post apocalyptic franchise to go along with its Sony-based adaptation of the Stephen King novel series The Dark Tower. Zane Weiner, Amanda Walker and Deborah Forte will produce along with Walsh and Jackson, while Kamins will exec produce and Boyens will be co-producer.
Said Rivers: “Mortal Engines is one of those stories that was made for the big screen. A fantastical, futuristic world that has to be seen to be believed. At its heart though, it’s a beautiful love story and a richly complex character driven adventure. To be the director who gets to bring Philip Reeve’s incredible universe to life is a dream come true.”
Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley called the filmmakers “all visionary storytellers with the gift of turning their passion projects into beloved blockbusters for a worldwide audience. The studio is proud of our longstanding relationship with MRC and these tremendous filmmakers, and we are looking forward to collaborating on this cinematic re-imagination of Philip’s bold and fantastical novel.”
The deal was lawyered by Nelson Davis for Jackson’s team, Stan Coleman for Scholastic and the author is repped by Philippa Milnes-Smith at Lucas Alexander Whitley Ltd in the U.K.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the superhero tentpole Green Lantern. Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the first human ever selected for the Green Lantern Corps: "A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers." The movie also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins. Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness) directed the comic book adaptation. This trailer offers everything you've been waiting to see: character moments for Hector Hammond (Sarsgaard), Carol Ferris (Lively), Kilowog (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan), and first looks at Amanda Walker (Bassett) and the Guardians of the Universe. I'll admit that the CG on the Guardians looks kind of crappy, but there's so much potentially great stuff in this trailer that I'm willing to suspend by disbelief a little further. I have no idea if this film is going to work,...
