After ‘Eddington:’ 7 Offbeat Westerns to Watch Next
Image
Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is here.

The movie, which pits a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) against his mayor (Pedro Pascal), set during the early days of the global pandemic, is fierce and raw. Considering this is from Aster, the director of “Midsommar,” “Hereditary” and “Beau is Afraid,” it is also confrontational and strange and deeply funny, with the action set at the precipice of the complete breakdown in communication that accompanied lockdown. (Indiewire called it “the first truly modern American Western.”)

And if you come out of “Eddington” looking for more offbeat westerns to watch, we’ve got seven that should fill that void nicely.

Paramount “Bad Company” (1972)

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a slew of what were referred to as “acid westerns” – westerns that were set in the distant past but that embraced the counterculture of the period, including, of course, recreational drug use. (Hence the “acid” in “acid western.

‘The King’s Speech’ Exec Producer Deepak Sikka Boards U.K.-Costa Rica Co-Production Starring ‘The Liberator’s’ Jose Palma (Exclusive)
Image
The U.K.’s Deepak Sikka, who executive produced the multi-Oscar-winning “The King’s Speech” and produced Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed,” has boarded “Black Gold” (working title), the first fiction co-production between the U.K. and Costa Rica.

He joins producer Josh Harris (“One Night Only”), London-based Costa Rican actor Jose Palma (Netflix’s “The Liberator”) in his first producing effort, and San Jose-based producer Esteban Quesada, whose credits include Hernán Jimenez’s “April” and who worked on the production of the first “Paddington Bear” movie when it shot in Costa Rica.

The Liberator, Netflix

“This is a strong Costa Rican-British co-production, the first of its kind for our market, as well as another push to tell more Latin American stories in the industry,” Palma told Variety, adding:

“I was once told, ‘If you want to know the future, ask a historian.’ In light of everything that is currently happening in the States,...

The Bizarre Ed Harris Western That Ruined Its Director's Promising Career
Image
Future director Alex Cox moved from his native England to Los Angeles in 1977 because he found the British film scene to be lacking. While attending UCLA, he made his first short, "Edge City," a bitter, talky, semi-surrealist film about struggling artists wandering the uglier parts of the city, having conversations about the nature of artistic success. ("Edge City" is on YouTube.) That short led to a plum deal with Mike Nesmith (of the band The Monkees), who secured over a million dollars for Cox's first feature, 1984's "Repo Man," a seminal film of the punk rock scene and a legit cult phenomenon. "Repo Man" wasn't initially a hit, but its soundtrack (full of L.A. hardcore) sold so well that it was re-released, becoming a financial success.

Cox came to love punk rock, already somewhat embodying its spirit in his outsider view of filmmaking. In 1986, the filmmaker made "Sid and Nancy,...

95-Year-Old ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Actor Bill Walker Talks Fighting Racism in Hollywood in Unearthed Interview
Image
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation kicked off Black History Month by launching the fourth season of its Legacy Collection, a series of more than 200 never-before-seen career retrospective interviews.

This season focuses on trailblazing Black film and TV actors — beginning with the late Bill Walker, whose career spanned nearly 50 years and more than 100 films and TV shows, including “The Killers,” “The Long Hot Summer” and “Our Man Flint.” Remember Reverend Sykes, who urges Scout a.k.a. Jean Louise to “stand up, your father’s passin’” as Gregory Peck’s Atticus Finch leaves the courtroom near the end of “To Kill a Mockingbird”? That’s Walker in action.

The veteran actor, who also served on the board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild from 1952 to 1971 (only the third Black person to do so), was interviewed about his life and career just seven weeks before he died in January 1992. Then 95 years old, Walker...

Robert Mitchum Has a Secret Role in 1 of the Best Westerns Ever Made
Image
Quick Links Robert Mitchum Was a Legendary Actor Mitchum Played an Underrated Role in Tombstone Tombstone Is a Classic Western

A few short years before his death, Robert Mitchum proved that he was still a Western movie star. It was not wholly an atypical move. At the tail end of their career, some legendary actors have taken minor roles in significant movies as they begin to phase out of Hollywood. Some brilliant stars, including John Hurt, Adam West, and Carrie Fisher, each appeared in roles for movies that would only be released after their deaths. The same was true for Mitchum, who appeared in James Dean: Race With Destiny. It was released three months before his death and was a disappointing swan song.

Still, Mitchum managed to secure one last extraordinary role before he passed. Known for starring in Western movies and film noir, the actor earned worldwide renown. He...

The Rundown: The Rock’s first big action film is still one of his best!
Image
It has been a long road seeing wrestling superstar The Rock evolve into the brand entertainment tycoon Dwayne Johnson of today. The hulking star has released a new Christmas adventure movie in time for the holiday season with Red One. Now, it seems like Johnson’s everywhere and he’s ingrained in pop culture. But back in the early millennium, he was still crossing over into acting and while he already had some success out of the gate, there’s one movie that was seen as his true arrival to be cinema’s next action hero. In today’s episode, we talk The Rundown and how it held up after 21 years.

The Rundown feels like the last breath of the kinds of action movies that dominated the 80s and 90s. This is the era when every movie from stars, like Stallone or Schwarzenegger, would mainly highlight their ability to fight hordes of bad guys,...

‘Family Switch’ Ending Explained & Movie Spoilers: How Do The Walkers Fix Everything?
Image
The whole purpose of the existence of movies like Family Switch is to entertain the audience for an hour or two, nothing more, nothing less. Family Switch on Netflix is a Christmas movie, but it brings the age-old concept of body swapping into the fold. The latter part is always exciting, if things are pulled off right. Family Switch takes off a little shaky, but the film interestingly gets better with each passing minute. The end product is a surprisingly well-made, genuinely fun Christmas movie with a great emotional payoff. There isn’t much confusion in the rather simple narrative, except for the character of Angelica. Let us take a closer look.

Spoilers Ahead

Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Movie?

Imagine Andy Bernard in his post-Dunder Mifflin days, but with a family. Ed Helms plays Bill Walker, who is a high school music teacher. The Walker family is your staple dysfunctional family.

Family Switch Review
Image
Plot: Jess and Bill Walker are doing their best to keep their family connected as their children grow older, more independent, and more distant. When a chance encounter with an astrological reader causes the family to wake up to a full body switch, on the morning of the most important day of each of their lives, can the Walkers unite to land a promotion, college interview, record deal and soccer tryout?

Review: In the sub-genre of body swap movies, very few films stand out as quality films. The concept itself is ridiculous and silly and tends to aim more toward family-friendly fare like Freaky Friday and 13 Going On 30. Still, even those movies benefitted from some personality and edge that helped them earn some originality, a quality sorely lacking in Netflix’s new Christmas-themed comedy Family Switch. Everything you need to know about this movie is showcased in the trailer,...

Family Switch Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When It Plays
Image
Family Switch's soundtrack blends Christmas themes with classic songs from various genres, capturing the essence of this offbeat family comedy. The music reflects the characters' emotions and their transformation into a more loving and understanding family throughout the film. The inclusion of holiday classics in the soundtrack reminds viewers that Family Switch takes place during the most magical time of the year.

Family Switch's soundtrack mixes the themes of Christmas with plenty of classic songs spanning several genres, which is perfect for this wacky family comedy. The Netflix body-swap film is full of outrageously hilarious moments, but, at its core, it's a family movie that drives home the importance of taking time to walk in someone else's shoes. Though it doesn't contain many features of a traditional Christmas film, the spackling of classic holiday songs reminds audiences that Family Switch is set during the most magical time of the year.

Family Switch Ending Explained
Image
The Walker family learns to appreciate and understand each other during their body-swap adventure, leading to a satisfying ending. Angelica, the astrological reader, guides the Walkers towards fixing themselves by understanding the power of family and the alignment of the planets. Each member of the Walker family learns valuable lessons during the body swap, including the importance of perspective and sacrificing for loved ones.

Family Switch sees the Walker family go through the biggest switch of the body-swap genre, which makes the moment that everything is set right in the end that much more satisfying. After the characters meet a strange woman named Angelica (Rita Moreno), who notices that they could all benefit from walking in each other's shoes, each of the five members of the Walker family winds up in the wrong body. Angelica teases that they must fix what has been broken before they can return, so the...

Family Switch Cast & Character Guide
Image
"Family Switch" is a chaotic Christmas comedy film that puts a twist on the body-swap genre, with the entire Walker family switching bodies. Jennifer Garner shines in her role as the meticulous and organized mother, Jess Walker, who learns that her way isn't always the best for everyone. The supporting cast in "Family Switch" includes talented actors like Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and Brady Noon, who deliver comedic performances that add to the fun of the film.

Netflix's Family Switch brought together some excellent talent to tell the story of the Walker family, with several additional stars getting in on the action as well. The film puts an added twist on body-swap films like Freaky Friday, 13 Going on 30, 17 Again, and The Change-Up by making the entire Walker family switch bodies with another member. This means that the central actors of Family Switch not only had to master...

Gabriel Byrne and John Turturro in Miller's Crossing (1990)

I Wouldn’t Be in Your Shoes

Gotta love that title! Producer Walter Mirisch’s small-scale Monogram noir was once assumed lost, but now it’s making its home video debut on Blu-ray. A luckless young entertainer finds himself neck deep in murder trouble, when an unbreakable string of circumstantial evidence points directly at him. As the date of his execution nears, the only way his desperate wife can help him is to encourage the detective on the case to think he has a chance with her. Taken from a Cornell Woolrich story, the show tries hard despite its low budget — we can almost feel Mirisch behind the scenes, making sure the picture has heart and sincerity.

Africa Screams
Image
Abbott & Costello perform at full strength in this very good, very silly jungle safari comedy. It’s definitely for kids and nostalgic fans — with equal parts slapstick, cornball repetitive vaudeville gags, and Lou Costello’s weirdly endearing infantile schtick. An impressively beautiful restoration has pulled it back from the pit of Public Domain ugliness. Plus ClassicFlix & the 3-D Archive appoint this 2-D movie with a tall stack of creative, relevant extras.

The Fast & Furious actor was just 40 years old when he passed away after a car accident in Santa Clarita, California on November 30.

Review: Brick Mansions Is Kind Of Fun, And Maybe That's Enough
Obviously, there's a bit of metatextual, non-diagetic solemnity to Brick Mansions, the final feature film starring one Paul William Walker the Fourth. Sure, we're going to get whatever scenes from Fast and Furious 7 they'll cobble together, but, really, this is his last shebang. Do we see Mr. Walker zoom around in a car for no particular purpose other than "thrills"? Yup. But this time, we see a fully packaged action star, one meant to compete mano-a-mano against the likes of David Belle, aka that guy in District 13 who helped popularize all that Parkour stuff.Ostensibly, this is a remake of Luc Besson's original Banlieue shtick, with the script once again penned by this most prolific of French action maestros. Instead of the slums of Paris,...

Paul Walker obituary
Handsome American actor best known for his role as Brian O'Conner in the Fast and Furious blockbuster movie franchise

Paul Walker, who has died aged 40 in a car accident, combined unthreatening star charisma with preppy good looks and a canny commercial sensibility. Though he had shown promise in his early film roles, he could easily have become just another piece of well-dressed eye candy had it not been for his involvement in the colossally successful Fast and Furious franchise, which has grossed $2.38bn worldwide to date.

In 2001, the first film in the series, The Fast and the Furious, put a four-wheeled spin on the surfing-bank-robbers thriller Point Break. Walker took the Keanu Reeves role of the upstart undercover cop who infiltrates a criminal gang – in this case, a group of daredevil street-racers moonlighting as truck hijackers – before discovering a kinship with the renegades he is supposed to be apprehending.

The contrast between Walker,...

Paul Walker 1973-2013: Obituary of the 'Fast and Furious' star
Paul Walker at an event for Fast & Furious (2009)
Us actor Paul Walker, star of The Fast and the Furious movie franchise, has passed away at the age of 40.

Walker was born in Glendale, California on September 12, 1973 to sewer contractor Paul William Walker III and fashion model Cheryl and was brought up in a working class Mormon household.

The eldest of five children, Walker began a modelling career at the young age of 2, appearing in a commercial for Pampers. Encouraged by his mother, he auditioned for television acting roles and went on to make guest appearances in Highway to Heaven and Touched by an Angel. In 1992, Walker bagged a recurring role as teenager Brandon Collins in Us soap The Young and the Restless.

Walker's talents were transferred to the big screen in 1998, when he made his feature film debut as Phil Deedle in Disney comedy Meet the Deedles. Following the movie's success, Walker secured supporting roles in teen films including Varsity Blues,...

Chance to Check Out Heston Directing Self in 'Man" Remake
Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film. According to the IMDb, Robert Bolt, who wrote the Oscar-winning 1966 movie (and the original play), is credited for the 1988 version’s screenplay as well. Also of note,...
