June 24, 1993 will become known as one of the most consequential days in the brief history of post-colonial Nigeria, but — for the two young boys at the heart of Akinola Davies Jr.’s semi-autobiographical drama “My Father’s Shadow” — that date is destined to be remembered for considerably more personal reasons.
It was on June 24, 1993 that Major General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, refusing to accept that the citizens of Nigeria had overwhelmingly voted for the people’s champion Mko Abiola, annulled the results of the country’s first democratic election since the military coup 10 years earlier. It was also, this poignant and vividly realized film invites us to imagine, on June 24, 1993 that brothers Akin and Remi were invited on a rare trip to Lagos with their dad, Folarin, a strong but mysterious figure in their lives who was often away from their family for months at a time.

In 78 years of the Cannes Film Festival, it’s hard to believe a Nigerian film has never been part of the Official Selection before. Enter Akinola Davies Jr. to correct that history with his feature debut “My Father’s Shadow,” premiering this weekend as part of Un Certain Regard. Set over the course of a single day in Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis, the film is a semiautobiographical tale from Davies. IndieWire shares a first look clip below.
The story follows a father, estranged from his two young sons, as they travel through the massive city while political unrest threatens their journey home.
Davies is a visual artist who writes the film with his brother Wale Davies — they both lost their father when they were young — and directs star Sopé Dìrísù in a haunting thriller about political unrest encroaching on a family’s personal journey.

Akinola Davies Jr. initially declined BBC Film head Eva Yates’ suggestion that he make a feature film. Instead, he shot the 18-minute Lizard, which won the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Grand Jury Prize.
However, Yates got her wish eventually, and the result is My Father’s Shadow — Davies’ feature directorial debut that is premiering at Cannes in Un Certain Regard. Davies co-wrote the film with his brother Wale Davies, who came up with the story before they collaborated on Lizard.
Shot in Lagos, Nigeria, it stars stage and screen actor Sopé Dìrísù as a dad who takes his two young sons into the bustling metropolis as unrest erupts over the country’s controversial June 12th, 1993 presidential election.
Davies started out as a runner, then self-financed music videos for others, before attending the New York Film Academy and shooting commercials and music videos. He realized that if he were to...

The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal a first look at the hotly anticipated directorial debut of Akinola Davies Jr., set to premiere in Cannes.
Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (Slow Horses, Gangs of London) leads the semi-autobiographical My Father’s Shadow. Based on a script by brothers Wale Davies and Davies Jr., the feature follows Remi and Akin, two kid brothers who spend a gift of a day with their estranged father Folarin.
They go on a voyage into Lagos, observing the colossal city for the first time and the hoops their father must pass through to be able to provide. All of this occurs against the backdrop of the 1993 presidential election result, which calls into question his ability to get Remi and Akin home.
The exclusive first image provided to THR shows Dìrísù, as Folarin, on the streets of Lagos, sitting with Godwin Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo.

Netflix and absolutely no chill. The WWE’s franchise show “Monday Night Raw” made its debut on the streaming platform last night, and major stars came out, championships and bragging rights were earned, and hip-hop beefs were addressed.
Only in the WWE can you see Travis Scott don a championship belt, Kendrick Lamar get dissed in his hometown, and Hulk Hogan get booed in one show. Yet that’s par for the course at something like the “Raw” event, which broadcasted live from the new multi-billion dollar Intuit Dome in Inglewood, CA, home of the LA Clippers.
The evening began with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shedding his badass “heel” persona (that’s wrestling for bad guy) and talking sincerely, thanking the WWE Universe and even giving gratitude to rival Cody Rhodes, the Universal Champion that he bloodied and pinned in the ring last year.
The Rock also gave props to his real-life cousin Roman Reigns,...

Milwaukee native Lakeyah burst onto the hip-hop scene in 2020 with her breakout hit, "Big Flexher," introducing the world to one of the newest rap girls out of the Midwest. At just 22 years old, Lakeyah has solidified her place as a prominent woman in hip-hop, emerging at a time when rising stars like Latto, GloRilla, Doechii, and others are also putting on for women in hip-hop.
To date, she's released a handful of full-length projects (2020's "Time's Up"; 2021's "In Due Time" and Gangsta Grillz mixtape "My Time"; and 2022's "No Pressure" Pts. 1 and 2) and hit singles, and has even more music on the way. She's also a star on BET+'s "The Impact: Atlanta" reality series, which looks at the lives of top influencers like herself. With that title to her name, Lakeyah has high hopes for her future in hip-hop, as she's still just getting started.

In the fifth episode of “The Power,” Margot got the power from her daughter Jos and became the “true face” of the power. Terry was lost in the crossfire that Roxy started because of the man who killed her mother. Matty, Margot’s son, began listening to Urbandox, the anti-woman power voice of the internet, who specifically hates Margot and the family because of her support for the power. Finally, Rob decided to leak confidential documents from the government about the Skein to do “good” and save women from accidental chemical castration. Hopefully, Margot will forgive him for the danger he has put the entire family and their careers in.
Spoilers Ahead
Margot
Along with Matty, millions of men are listening to Urbandox because of his “motivational” speeches regarding what he claims they have lost to the power—physical strength. Urbandox is coaxing men to use their physical strength, guns,...

ItsTheReal hosts Eric and Jeff Rosenthal’s new podcast documentary The Blog Era, presented by Pharrell’s OTHERtone Media,...
