After a year away, the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival returned to Montreal with a star-studded line-up of the biggest names in laughter. On July 24, Variety presented their annual 10 Comics To Watch at a cocktail party sponsored by Cohen Gardner Law, who has been partnering with Variety on the honor for the past 20 years. All 10 comics were in attendance, including recent Emmy nominee Robby Hoffman (“Hacks”), “Overcompensating” breakout Mary Beth Barone and social media sensation Dyon ‘Mojo’ Brooks. They were joined by fellow honorees Joe Dombrowski, Nate Jackson, Morgan Jay, Gianmarco Soresi, Jiaoying Summers, Steph Tolev and Tacarra Williams.

Why Stand-up Legend George Wallace Can’t Get Off the Stage After 49 Years in Comedy: “I’m Living My Dream”
Image
Comedy legend George Wallace has been in the business for 49 years and apparently has no plans to leave the stand-up stage.

So much so that Wallace, 73, says he may do stand-up until his dying breath because he measures success not by the wealth he has but by how much he enjoys life and makes audiences happy.

“I’m living my dream. I’m the most successful person you’ve ever met. It’s not how much money you have, it’s how you enjoy your life while you’re living and that’s what I do,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday while attending the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal.

That dream of wanting to become a comic began at age 6. Wallace watched Red Skelton, Red Foxx, Richard Pryor and others growing up. And in 1976 he got into the comedy business at the ground floor with a young Jerry Seinfeld,...

Ryan Reynolds Zings Rob Mac at Just for Laughs Awards
Image
An awards show for comedians always has its fair share of roast-worthy one-liners and zingers.

So when Ryan Reynolds on Friday paraded onstage for the 2025 Just For Laughs awards show to honor Rob Mac with a Generation Award, the Deadpool franchise star couldn’t resist a jab at his fellow Wrexham AFC owner and executive producer of Welcome to Wrexham.

“Rob, second place to the lifetime achievement award, amazing,” Reynolds said as he began his tribute to his friend and longtime business partner after a lifetime achievement trophy had just been handed out to comedian George Wallace.

“Hollywood can be an insipid shithouse of round-the-clock shamelessness,” Reynolds said as he touted the need for rare character among creatives and execs in a business short of it. “You have to be willing to be excited to grind and push a dream up a hill and have the wherewithal to do it on your own,...

Could The Bear Solve Its Problems With This One Crazy Trick?
Image
In the Season Four premiere of The Bear, a lot of steps are taken to contain the chaos that even Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) admits to Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) he doesn’t like. Cicero (Oliver Platt) and his business manager “Computer” (Brian Koppelman) let the chefs, and general manager Sugar (Abby Elliott) know exactly what their financial situation is: The Bear has precisely two months of runway to start turning a profit; a 1,440-minute countdown clock may not decrease anyone’s stress about it, but at least it’s making expectations starkly clear.

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) has hired the front-of-house staff from Ever, the restaurant where he did his apprenticeship back in Season Two; they’re establishing new kitchen practices to smooth the process. These are fine first steps, but I’m not seeing the one I think could make the greatest difference in the shortest time: Scream Jar.

Clint Eastwood Fired The Director In The Middle Of Shooting This Classic Western
Image
By the time Clint Eastwood had finished his three-movie stint with Sergio Leone, he was not only the face of the "Dollars" trilogy that introduced American audiences to spaghetti westerns, but also one of the biggest movie stars in the world. His Rowdy Yates days on the CBS western "Rawhide" were well behind him now, with the silver screen calling to him more than ever. The world was his oyster. Eastwood's time in the industry would ultimately accentuate one of his biggest characteristics as a creator, with that being a total sense of control over production. Along with his financial advisor Irving Leonard, Eastwood co-founded The Malpaso Company (now called Malpaso Productions), which has produced just about every one of his films from the Ted Post-directed western "Hang 'Em High" all the way up until 2024's stellar courtroom morality drama "Juror #2."

Malpaso would allow Eastwood to maintain some...

Gavin Newsom Slams Trump’s ‘Weakness’ After Arrest Threat

As President Donald Trump mobilizes another 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid anti-Immigrations and Customs Enforcements (Ice) protests in Los Angeles, California Gov. Gavin Newsom called out Trump’s “theatrical display of toughness” and said the president has “crossed a red line in this country.”

In a severe escalation of federal involvement, Trump signed an order on Saturday authorizing the deployment of National Guard troops, 300 of which were sent to L.A. without the request or consent of city and state officials. The National Guard was last activated without...

Angelina Jolie’s Eye-Opening Role: How Breathing Life Into This Supermodel’s Tragic Story Helped Save Her Own
Image
Angelina Jolie’s Portrayal Of Gia Was More Than Just A Role ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Angelina Jolie didn’t take the easy road into stardom. Even though she appeared in a small role beside her father and popular actor Jon Voight in Lookin’ to Get Out as a child, Jolie’s connection with her famous father faded fast. She spent most of her early life distant from him, dealing with much darker things than auditions and red carpets.

Angelina Jolie’s Troubled Teenage Years

Jolie’s teenage years were a blur of pain, drug use, and extreme choices. At one point, she even went so far as to contact a hitman to end her own life. However, acting became something of a life raft, though she didn’t jump into it with the intention of healing.

The roles soon followed, and she took them. Early projects such as Cyborg 2, Hackers,...

CBS Fills ‘After Midnight’ Slot With ‘Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen’
Image
CBS is betting on another show to fill the gap left by “The Late Late Show With James Corden.” Starting in September, “Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen” will take over the 12:30 a.m. slot from “After Midnight.”

The series will officially air at 12:37 a.m. Et on Sept. 22 with back-to-back, half-hour episodes. Episodes of the comedy talk show will then air Monday through Friday, with the series also available to stream live on Paramount+ for subscribers that have Paramount+ with Showtime.

For decades, CBS had a pretty solid late night formula. “The Late Show” at 11:30 p.m. was followed by “The Late Late Show” an hour later. But when Corden announced he was stepping away from the franchise to spend more time with his family, the network announced it was ending the show that had been on the air since 1995. “The Late Late Show” officially ended in...

Joe Don Baker in The Commission (2003)
Joe Don Baker, Walking Tall star and James Bond actor, dies at 89
Joe Don Baker in The Commission (2003)
Joe Don Baker, who led one of the greatest vigilante movies ever, Walking Tall, has passed away. Baker was 89.

Joe Don Baker began his career in the 1960s, turning up in roles in Cool Hand Luke, Guns of the Magnificent Seven and Junior Bonner. But it was playing wrestler-turned-vigilante Buford Pusser – a real-life sheriff in Tennessee – that put him on the map. (He would later be replaced by Bo Svenson for the sequels.)

Much of the focus of Joe Don Baker in his post-Walking Tall ‘70s lineup was on crime movies, landing spots in Charley Varrick, The Outfit and Framed. Action was a forte of Baker’s as well, turning up in a number throughout the first leg of his career.

Joe Don Baker would later have a distinction of playing two different characters in the James Bond franchise. First came 1987’s The Living Daylights, where he played black...

Why Someone Jerry Seinfeld Knew In College Sued The NBC Sitcom For $100 Million
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"Seinfeld" is a unique sitcom in a variety of ways. It upended the genre's storytelling formula by zeroing in on the petty exploits of four self-absorbed characters who reliably make their lives and/or the lives of others a living nightmare by prioritizing their own concerns. It eschewed the obligatory will-they-or-won't-they tension between the two characters (Jerry and Elaine) most likely to hook up by revealing early on that they'd already hooked up.

Another near-singular quirk of "Seinfeld," at least at the time, is that the four main characters were based on very real people. Aside from "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" (which starred the actual Nelson family), it's hard to think of a sitcom that drew so heavily from the lives of its creators. But Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, two comedians who emerged from the talent-packed 1970s stand-up club scene,...

Critic’s Notebook: The Cancellation of ‘Clean Slate’ Marks the End of Freevee’s Creatively Impressive, Commercially Botched Half-Hour Brand
Image
When news broke on Friday afternoon that Amazon wouldn’t be making a second season of the comedy Clean Slate, media reaction hovered between two viable extremes: “Amazon Cancels Show We Never Knew Existed” and “Amazon Canceled Norman Lear’s Kinda-Final Show.”

I can understand both approaches. Despite the presence of stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace, Lear’s posthumous credit was the highest-profile thing Clean Slate had going for it, and despite all of those elements, I never heard anybody mention Clean Slate out in the wild. It was an invisible show in a landscape that too frequently renders all but the biggest titles invisible.

For me, though, the abrupt end of Clean Slate represented the end of a different, less-heralded era: that of Freevee’s half-hour development, one of the most creatively interesting and commercially botched pieces of brand-building in recent memory.

Freevee, the ad-supported branch of Amazon...

Norman Lear Trans Comedy 'Clean Slate' Canceled By Amazon
Image
Amazon's streaming service, Prime Video, has canceled the legendary Norman Lear's final television series, Clean Slate. The comedy, which starred Orange is the New Black standout Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace, was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and told a timely tale featuring a transgender actress, but that failed to sway the company into giving it a second season. The news was first reported by Deadline, in a guest column penned by Cox, Wallace, and co-creator Dan Ewen.

Though only first reported on Friday, April 18, the heartfelt and earnest piece from its creative team revealed that the series was actually canceled back at the end of March, barely a month after the show premiered (to positive reviews and an 89% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes). It's hard not to wonder if the series' subject matter — which spoke directly to the highly politicized issue of transgender people and their...

Norman Lear’s ‘Clean Slate’ Canceled at Prime Video After One Season
Image
Norman Lear’s final completed project “Clean Slate” has been canceled at Prime Video after one season, the series’ stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace and co-creator Dan Ewen revealed in a Friday guest column on Deadline.

The series premiered on the Amazon-owned streaming platform on Feb. 6. But by the end of March, the eight-episode “labor of love” was canceled.

The comedy sitcom Clean Slate premiered on Feb. 6 to positive reviews. It was co-created by Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black) and George Wallace (Batman Forever), who also starred in the sitcom. However, despite the positive reviews, Deadline officially confirmed Prime Video axed Clean Slate after one season.

Cox, Wallace, and co-creator Dan Ewen confirmed the news in a guest column on the outlet, detailing the show's origins and further details about the show. Clean Slate was one of the last series veteran producer Norman Lear produced before his death in 2023, as the series had been originally announced in January 2020 by Peacock. Development took several years, moving from Peacock to...

Amazon Cancels ‘Clean Slate,’ Norman Lear’s Final Completed Show, After One Season
Image
Amazon Prime Video has canceled Clean Slate, which was television legend Norman Lear’s final completed project, after one season. Series stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace, as well as their fellow co-creator Dan Ewen, broke the news in a guest column on Deadline.

Clean Slate premiered on Prime Video on February 6; by “the end of March” it was canceled, the trio wrote. Cox, Wallace and Ewen called the series a “labor of love,” and a “seven-year effort” that “was gone in a puff of server exhaust.”

Perhaps a little bit of a shot there on how Amazon conducts its business.

It was Cox and Wallace who brought the show to Lear. Lear, the sitcom dynamo (for decades and decades), died in December 2023 at 101 years old. Lear was the comedy genius behind All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, The Jeffersons and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

George Wallace and Laverne Cox in Clean Slate (2025)
Amazon has canceled the comedy series “Clean Slate” after one season, Variety has confirmed.

The show originally debuted on Prime Video in February. It starred Laverne Cox, George Wallace, Jay Wilkison, D.K. Uzoukwu, Telma Hopkins, Philip Garcia, and Norah Murphy. It bears the distinction of being the last completed series produced by the legendary Norman Lear before his death in 2023.

Wallace and Cox co-created the series with Dan Ewen. All three served as executive producers along with Lear, Brent Miller, and Simran Baidwan. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios produced.

‘One to One: John and Yoko’ Review: John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the Move in Compelling Archival Doc
Image
This review was originally published during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. “One to One: John and Yoko” opens from Magnolia Pictures on IMAX screens Friday, April 11, 2025.

In the fall of 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved into an apartment on 105 Bank Street in the West Village of Manhattan. It had been two years since Lennon told his Beatles bandmates that he wanted “a divorce,” and the recently married couple craved a fresh start in America away from the oppressive shadow of the group he founded. By this point, Lennon and Ono’s lives were completely intertwined—they were not merely lovers, but also close creative collaborators whose artistry was developing in tandem. Her background in the avant-garde and gallery world intermingled with his experience with pop music and celebrity until their work became inseparable from persona. Together they garnered a more focused political conscience as the Vietnam war continued unabated amidst an increasingly fractured,...

He Said He Wanted a Revolution. He Tried to Find It in New York

A presidential candidate who plays to white grievance is almost assassinated. A Black woman runs for president. A major deportation threat hangs in the air. People take to the streets to protest bombings and genocide. Sounds very much like modern times. Instead, it’s the post-Woodstock world of the early Seventies seen in Kevin Macdonald’s One to One: John & Yoko, a documentary that dares to take you into one of the most polarizing periods of one of pop culture’s most controversial couples. It’s the movie you...

One to One: John & Yoko Review — Fractured Focus Undermines Connection
Image
Few stories about pop culture are more prevalent than the myth that Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles. For decades, it has been clear other extenuating factors led to John Lennon leaving the band, and yet the story continues to percolate. To help dispel this idea, One to One: John & Yoko examines the famous couple during their life in New York City in 1972. In the process, it follows Lennon and Ono as they mount various pressure campaigns to change the policies and politics of the era. While not entirely successful in showcasing the couple, director Kevin Macdonald paints a compelling, if overly broad, vision of the moment.

One to One: John and Yoko review – Kevin Macdonald’s immersive collage is a pop culture fever dream
Lennon
A collection of staggering TV clips and amazing audio of Lennon and Ono’s life in 1970s NYC, this film is a mosaic of countercultural moments

Film-maker Kevin Macdonald has created a fever dream of pop culture: a TV-clip collage of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s time in New York in the early 70s, as they led the countercultural protest. It’s a film that mixes small screen zeitgeist fragments and madeleine moments, a memory quilt of a certain time and place, juxtaposing Jerry Rubin and Allen Ginsberg with Richard Nixon and George Wallace, John and Yoko in concert with ads for Tupperware – all inspired by the fact that John and Yoko did an awful lot of TV watching in their small New York apartment of that time, with John in particular thrilled by the American novelty of 24/7 television.

It was also on TV that John and Yoko saw...

Laverne Cox Gives Powerful Speech Against Trump Agenda at Scad TVfest: ‘They Are Committed to Eradicating Trans People from Public Life’
Image
Laverne Cox got the Scad TVfest crowd to its feet on Friday evening, as the star delivered a powerful, emotional speech about the new Trump administration’s attack on trans rights, civil rights and destruction of regulations in order to enrich the billionaires now in office. Taking the stage to accept Scad’s Impact Award, before premiering two episodes of her new Amazon Prime Video series “Clean Slate,” Cox delivered a call to action while also admitting the frightening truth that at the moment, “it might be too little, too late.”

“The system is rigged in favor of corporations, plutocrats, oligarchs, the wealthy,” she said. “It might not be the time for us to be able to rise up not only as trans people, but as working people, as people of color. People with the capacity for pregnancy, people who really just want to get a no fault divorce. And so many other things.

‘Clean Slate’ Was Originally Pitched As ‘Sanford and Son’ Reboot
Image
Everyone seems to love Clean Slate, the sitcom with “a trans story right when it’s needed the most.” But comedian George Wallace had a very different idea in mind when he first pitched the show to legendary producer Norman Lear — he wanted to update classic ‘70s sitcom Sanford and Son.

“Sanford and Son makes everybody feel good,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter. “Just hearing the music, already that smile comes on your face. So I said, ‘Let me go to Norman Lear.’ I had known him for 30 years, and I said, ‘I want to reboot Sanford and Son.’ He says, ‘Are you kidding? You can’t do that show. Get a twist and come back.’”

Lear knew a little something about Sanford and Son — he developed the show as NBC’s answer to All in the Family. While the sitcom doesn’t show up much in syndication these days,...

New Prime Video Series ‘Clean Slate’ Brings Fresh Perspective to Family Reunion Story
George Wallace and Laverne Cox in Clean Slate (2025)
A new comedy series on Prime Video is challenging traditional family dynamics with a heartwarming story of reconciliation and understanding. “Clean Slate,” developed by comedian George Wallace and featuring Emmy-nominated actress Laverne Cox, explores the complex relationship between a father and his transgender daughter.

The series follows Harry Slate (Wallace), a car wash owner in Mobile, Alabama, who reconnects with his child after 23 years of separation. The unexpected twist: his son has transitioned and now identifies as Desiree, played by Cox.

“I wondered, what if I had a son that left home and came back 23 years later?” Wallace said. Cox completed the thought: “And that child says, ‘I was never your son, I was always your daughter.'”

The show delves into themes of family acceptance, personal growth, and community, particularly within the African Methodist Episcopal (Ame) Church. For Cox, who grew up in Mobile, the setting carries deep personal significance.

Laverne Cox Says Developing ‘Clean Slate’ With Norman Lear Felt ‘Like a Miracle’
Image
For the past 20 years, Laverne Cox has dreamed of starring in a scripted series she created. With Prime Video’s “Clean Slate,” that dream is finally coming true. But getting to this point was far from an easy process.

“The fact that this has finally happened feels like a miracle,” Cox told TheWrap. “I’m just committed to having fun, being in deep gratitude and being of service when I can because people do want to hear from me as a trans person in this moment.”

The idea for “Clean Slate” actually came from the series’ co-lead, comedian George Wallace. Together with his collaborator Dan Ewen, Wallace wanted to make a remake of the iconic sitcom “Sanford and Son.” But when the duo pitched the idea to the NBC comedy’s uncredited executive producer Norman Lear, he passed unless the series could be reformatted with a twist. That’s how “Stanford and Daughter” was floated,...

Laverne Cox Hopes ‘Clean Slate’s “Multidimensional” Representation Counters Anti-Trans “Media Propaganda”
Image
With a new wave of anti-lgbtq legislation coming out of the first days of 2025, Laverne Cox is well aware of the cultural significance of her new show.

In Clean Slate, Season 1 of which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the actress plays a proud trans woman named Desiree who returns home to her estranged father Harry (George Wallace) in Mobile, Alabama, after 17 years, telling Deadline they set the series in her actual hometown in attempt to “humanize Desiree” amid the ongoing battle for trans rights.

“I wanted it to just have that sort of authenticity, and I wanted to kind of have it be an exploration of what it means to come home, how difficult that is,” explained Cox. “I have such a difficult relationship with Mobile, honestly, to this day, and I thought that tension would be great. It’s my real life.”
