A Stephen King cult classic movie from the ‘80s is getting a new streaming home, as development continues on its Netflix remake. The Life of Chuck is the latest movie based on a King book to hit theaters, debuting June 13 to great critical fanfare, but relatively modest box office. No matter how the Mike Flanagan-directed movie ultimately fares financially, Hollywood’s hunger for films adapted from King’s books is unlikely to abate.
Studios’ appetite for King adaptations has indeed long been ravenous. The '80s saw best-selling books The Shining, The Dead Zone, Christine and many others being translated from page to screen. When new King stories aren't available, Hollywood has no problem double-dipping on some of these classics, though remakes like Firestarter and Pet Sematary have tended to be disappointing. Despite the mixed track record of King remakes, another classic from the author's catalog is getting a new version,...

Among all the horror films of 2024 that garnered a lot of attention, there was one hidden gem that flew under the radar despite having a 95% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Titled Stream, it marked the first appearance of Tim Curry on the big screen in 14 years, and was one of the last movies to star Tony Todd before his untimely death. Now, it's getting a sequel thanks to Fuzz on the Lens Productions, the same team who had a hand in the two most recent Terrifier films.
Per Bloody Disgusting, Stream 2 will "build on its predecessor's all-too-real technology-driven storyline while still maintaining the feel of a classic slasher." Fans who have seen it will recall that Stream's plot centered around a vacationing family who were the unwitting participants in a live-streamed game that featured four serial killers competing to see which one of them could score the most creative kills.

Sherwood Schwartz's 1969 sitcom "The Brady Bunch" was progressive and retrogressive at the same time. On the one hand, it vaunted the virtues of remarrying and finding new families, showing that step-siblings and second spouses could produce as harmonious a domestic unit as more traditional nuclear families. On the other hand, the characters were clean-cut and virtuous to a cartoonish degree, only expressing the blandest sorts of domestic turmoil. It's easy to be harmonious when every member of the family is scrupulous and clean. The show was more about mild, silly pet peeves than about legitimately hard-hitting clashes of character.
Of course, "hard-hitting" was not Schwartz's métier. He was a writer of high-concept, light-hearted comedies. This was, after all, the "Gilligan's Island" guy. He wasn't about to skew into Neil Labute family dramas with "The Brady Bunch."
And "The Brady Bunch" was huge. It lasted a gangbusters 117 episodes over its five seasons,...

The difference between a monster and a wild animal is just a matter of perspective. Polar bears may seem cute and cuddly when seen from a distance, but you’d be screaming your lungs out if you were ever close enough to notice the dried specks of blood on their snow-white fur. Fortunately, even the deadliest predators tend to avoid human beings when given the chance, which is why genre films sometimes pair animals with equally predatory humans in order to make them seem even more dangerous.
Case in point: Sean Byrne’s latest thriller Dangerous Animals, which hits theaters this Friday, follows a surfer as she attempts to flee from a deranged man hell-bent on feeding her to his pet sharks. So, in anticipatipn, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six homicidal pets in horror movies! After all, no machete can compete with a weapon...

That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism, and the American Witch Movie: "Researched over the course of seven years, That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism, and the American Witch Movie explores the cyclical rise and fall of the cinematic witch in American culture and her relationship to feminist movements over time.
Through historical analysis and dozens of case studies, Payton McCarty-Simas analyzes how the witch came to be understood as the ultimate cultural bogeywoman on the one hand and a classic feminist symbol of empowerment on the other.
It traces the representation of “demonic women” in the past decade back to older horror cycles and through the “New Age” section of your local bookstore, investigating the (counter)cultural shifts along the way.
The book is a deep dive that demonstrates how changes in cinematic portrayals of the witch over time reflect major shifts in how feminism is perceived politically and interpreted culturally in America.

Stephen King's 1981 novel "Cujo" is about a Saint Bernard dog that contract rabies from a bat and goes on a killing spree. The dog, Cujo, belonged to an abusive mechanic, so it was already seemingly predisposed to violence. It mauls several people throughout the course of the story. The novel climaxes with a local mom named Donna Trenton and her young son Tad becoming trapped in a Ford Pinto on a hot day as Cujo stalks them from outside. There comes a moment when Donna has to choose to stay in the car and risk dying of heat stroke ... or exiting the car and facing the killer dog.
In the book, Donna successfully fights off Cujo with a baseball bat, beating the dog and stabbing it to death with a shard when the bat breaks. Tad, sadly, does not survive the ordeal, dying of heatstroke in the Pinto.

If Dee Wallace didn’t stand up to Steven Spielberg, E.T. could’ve wanted to do more than just go home.
In a recent appearance on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast, Wallace, who played Elliot’s mother Mary in the immortal 1982 classic, said there was an axed side plot in the film for a romance between her character and the titular alien.
“There’s a whole B story in ‘E.T.’ about E.T. having a love affair with Mary, a love crush on Mary,” she said. “And there’s little bits of it left in there.”
She continued, “There was a scene where he came in to put Reese’s Pieces down on my bedside table as I’m asleep. Well, Spielberg wanted the sheet a little lower than I was comfortable with.”
Wallce explained that she took her grievances up with Spielberg directly, arguing to maintain the family-friendly tone of the film.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has long been one of movie history's most celebrated sci-fi films, widely considered to be among the very best from director Steven Spielberg. 43 years after the film's release, star Dee Wallace reflected on the iconic movie, recalling how she pushed back to make one of her scenes a tad less racy.
Wallace was one of the stars of E.T. with her role as Marty Taylor, a divorced single mother of three children whose son, Elliott (Henry Thomas), befriends the titular space alien. In a conversation with Steve Kmetko for the Still Here Hollywood podcast (per EW), Wallace shared how a subplot about E.T. having a "crush" on Mary would have been more heavily played up in the original version of the film, though "little bits of it" made it to the final cut. She went on to describe how one moment planned would have shown...

Dee Wallace is one of the icons from the 1980s who shot to stardom by starring in cult horror movies like The Hills Have Eyes and The Howling. However, it was her role in Steven Spielberg's sci-fi classic E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial that gave her the opportunity to prove she wasn't just a horror actor. She became Mary, Elliot's mom, a lonely woman who helps her children survive a broken home but also helps the alien creature return home in the film's final act. But as innocent and family-friendly as the movie is, it turns out that the original plans included an unexpected take on E.T. and Mary's relationship. Luckily, Wallace was there to stop Spielberg's original vision.
Dee Wallace appeared on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, where she spoke about her most important roles. Wallace, 76, is now a Hollywood legend with hundreds of film and TV appearances to her name.

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. went on to become an immediate success in theaters in 1982 and became the highest-grossing film of all time. The crowded theaters were definitely a result of the appeal the film had among the family audiences. However, Spielberg almost included a raunchy scene in the film that would’ve been inappropriate for a family audience.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial actress Dee Wallace recently opened up about the filming experience, where she was asked to film a rather sexy scene. Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors, and many of his works have been adapted into films and television shows. The horror author has been very vocal about his thoughts on his adaptations, but one of them even got a letter of thanks for changing one of the endings.
In 1983, Lewis Teague directed the adaptation of Cujo, based on King's 1981 novel of the same name. The story follows a mother and son who are trapped inside trying to escape their dog, who gets wild after being bitten by a bat. In a new appearance on Steve Kmetko's podcast Still Here Hollywood, lead actress Dee Wallace detailed King's reaction to the film changing the ending, per Entertainment Weekly.
Around the 18:15 mark, Wallace opened up about Cujo. "Cujo is my favorite movie of mine," the actress revealed. "The movie is very different from the book. In the movie,...

When you think about Stephen King movies from the 1980s, there are a few classics that immediately come to mind. The Shining, Stand By Me, The Dead Zone, and, of course, 1983's Cujo. Directed by Lewis Teague, who can forget the horrifying tale of a rabid St. Bernard terrorizing a mother and her son trapped in a Ford Pinto on a blistering-hot summer day? Both the book and the movie managed to strike a chord with audiences, not only because of the subject matter, but also because of the way each one ended. Now, star Dee Wallace has revealed King's reaction to the film's conclusion, which was noticeably different from his novel.
Appearing on Still Here Hollywood with Steve Kmetko, Wallace spoke at length about her incredible career, which has included appearances in Steven Spielberg's E.T., The Howling, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and Cujo. Wallace played Donna Trenton in the King film,...

When Gary Brandner finally cast the monster from his mind, and then onto paper, he gave it a familiar form. By that time, werewolves weren’t uncommon to see in Brandner’s industry, however, the late fiction author wanted to break the monotony. So rather than having a single werewolf pop up in a small town, 1977’s The Howling featured a whole community of werewolves. This small twist on the growing genre helped make Brandner’s first horror novel a success as well as attract the attention of Hollywood. Now, sure enough, creative license is part of the deal in these page-to-screen adaptations, yet Joe Dante’s ‘81 rendering is so distinct from its basis that it’s practically a different beast.
The Howling is a far cry from 1933’s The Werewolf of Paris, the Guy Endore-penned novel that many consider to be the Dracula of werewolf literature. Brandner’s...

Not all of the classic Universal Monsters were based on classic stories. While Frankenstein and Dracula came from the minds of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, The Wolfman, and previously Werewolf of London, was based on folklore dating back centuries rather than fiction. While the character has had a hard time coming back into the limelight with the disappointing Wolfman from 2010 and even more disappointing Wolf Man from 2025, the myth has done well for itself even while not being as in the public favor as the Zombie or Vampire. Those original films may not be based on books but that didn’t stop writers from creating their own stories or studios from adapting them. This includes the likes of Hammer Studios Curse of the Werewolf being adapted from The Werewolf of Paris and The Wolfen getting turned into the 1981 movie Wolfen. Speaking of 1981, there were two other rather small werewolf...

As my tastes change and I get a chance to watch more and more movies, largely due to wonderful companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, and Synapse putting out forgotten or lost movies, this also changes what I’m willing to call a Black Sheep. The Howling series is kind of a Black Sheep series in horror. It has 8 films over a 30-year span from 1981 to 2011 and while the first one is typically held in high esteem because of its pedigree, and, well, because its good, there’s a lot to watch and unpack here. You can look at which movie is the black sheep of the series but let’s get even more granular with it. Let’s look at which of the two Howling movies directed by Phillipe Mora deserves the moniker. While the third one has that specific Ozploitation flair to it that admittedly I am an easy mark for,...

Netflix picked up the rights to Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo and is currently developing a new adaptation. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky—best known for Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Mother!, and The Whale—is circling the project.
The 1983 version directed by Lewis Teague was a modest box office success despite garnering mixed reviews. In the decades since, Cujo has become a cult classic, with many praising the central performance from Dee Wallace who plays a desperate mother trying to protect her son from Cujo's wrath.
The poor St. Bernard starts out as your typical happy-go-lucky dog until he gets bitten by a rabid bat and turns feral. One of the film's most famous scenes is the climactic car showdown toward the end, when Cujo is frantically trying to break into Donna's (Wallace) vehicle as she hides inside it with her son. As...

Darren Aronofsky is circling to direct Netflix’s Cujo film, based on the novel by Stephen King.
Deadline first reported the news of the film adaptation , with Roy Lee attached to produce in the deal made last week.
The 1981 novel was originally adapted into a thriller film in 1983 starring Dee Wallace as a mother protecting her sone from a 200-pound St. Bernard that turned rabid after being bit by a bat. The formerly friendly hound transformed into one of cold calculation that left a trail of bodies in its wake.
The climactic scene in that film took place when Wallace’s mother and her son face the difficult decision of battling heatstroke in a car that won’t start or confronting the big, rabid dog waiting for them outside the small vehicle.
Aronofsky’s more recent projects include Postcard from Earth (2023) and The Whale (2022) starring Brendan Fraser...

We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.
Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.
King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.

It was reported last week that Netflix closed a deal with producer Roy Lee to bring a new adaptation of Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo to life, and now it appears as if a director not named Mike Flanagan is close to signing a deal to helm the project. Cujo is, of course, the beloved survival horror novel about a rabid St. Bernard that goes on a terror through the town of Castle Rock, focusing mainly on a woman and her son who are trapped in a car under the blazing hot sun.
Per The InSneider, Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to close a deal that will see him direct the new Netflix adaptation of Cuju. Aronosfky's previous work not only includes the aforementioned psychological drama, but the Academy Award-winning films Black Swan and The Whale, as well as the sci-fi romance The Fountain, and 2008's The Wrestler,...

Darren Aronofsky is circling Netflix’s “Cujo,” a remake of Stephen King’s horror novel about a bloodthirsty St. Bernard.
“Cujo” remains in early stages of development and Aronofsky has yet to have a creative meeting with Netflix, according to sources familiar with the project. Should the deal close, the film would mark Aronofsky’s first feature for a streaming service.
Although occasionally courted by Hollywood (he was an early contender to reboot “Batman” before Christopher Nolan took over), Aronofsky has mostly stayed true to his indie roots. The filmmaker has directed such films as psychological drama “Requiem for a Dream,” psychological thriller “Black Swan,” psychological horror allegory “Mother!” and psychological case study “The Whale.” He’s currently putting the finishing touches on Sony’s “Caught Stealing,” a crime drama with Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz that opens in theaters this August.

Killer dog tale Cujo, by Stephen King, is getting a new telling, backed by Netflix money. More on the story here.
There’s an old maxim that suggests that there’s always at least three Robin Hood films in development at the same time. Given the never-ending glut of Stephen King adaptations that are pumped out, it would probably be more accurate these days to replace Sherwood Forest’s rogueish outlaw with the prolific novelist who always seems to have a take on his work in cinemas, or just around the corner.
Case in point: while Osgood Perkins’ take on The Monkey is still in cinemas, 2025 will also bring us Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck and Edgar Wright’s The Running Man. On the small screen, there’s also HBO’s Welcome To Derry and MGM+’s The Institute debuting this year too.

Netflix has given a green light to a movie reboot of the Stephen King novel Cujo, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Roy Lee will produce the remake of the horror story about a mother and son who fight off a rabid dog while trapped in their car. Cujo was first adapted from King’s 1981 psychological horror novel of the same name where Cujo is at first a lovable St. Bernard, but after being bitten by a bat becomes everyone’s worst enemy.
In the 1983 film Cujo, a mother, Donna (Dee Wallace), and her son, Tad (Danny Pintauro) come into contact with Cujo and must fight for their lives. King’s novels, starting with 1976’s Carrie, have long been picked up by Hollywood for movie adaptations.

Iconic Stephen King Story Getting New Adaptation At Netflix After '80s Movie Changed Its Dark Ending
Stephen King is one of the most frequently adapted authors in film and television history, with these projects garnering wide acclaim for several decades. Brian De Palma’s adaptation of King’s debut novel, Carrie, created a legendary horror sequence in 1976 when Sissy Spacek was drenched in pig's blood. In 1980, Stanley Kubrick directed The Shining with a visually stunning yet off-kilter take on King’s novel. Ten years later, Misery won Kathy Bates an Academy Award for her chilling performance as an obsessed literary fan, with other successful King adaptations including Stand By Me, Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption.

Netflix is preparing to make another Stephen King adaptation! According to a new Deadline exclusive, the streamer has finalized a deal to adapt King's novel Cujo into a new feature film with Roy Lee set to produce.
Lee is a well-known horror movie producer, having produced hit movies like Barbarian, Strange Darling, Companion, The Ring, and more. He's also producing the upcoming films Weapons and Until Dawn. But most notably, Lee has produced multiple King projects such as Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot, It, It: Chapter Two, and The Stand. And Netflix has released a few adaptations, too, between Gerald's Game, 1922, and In the Tall Grass, so Lee and Netflix working together makes a lot of sense.
First published in 1981, Cujo is King's novel about a once sweet Saint Bernard who gets bit by a bat and turns rabid. From there, the massive animal goes on a rampage, killing multiple people throughout the book.
