Image
Mr. Robot is back, and this time, it's gaining ground on Netflix in impressive fashion. In its first few days since launching on the platform on July 3, the crime-tech thriller has surged onto the Top 10. It's an unsurprising success given how popular and well-received the show was when it first premiered in 2015 on the USA Network. Twisted, Timely, Brilliant: Why Mr. Robot is the Perfect Binge
Image
As a TV Fanatic, there’s nothing more thrilling than watching a whole new audience discover a fantastic show that you love.

Fortunately, whenever Netflix picks up a dated megahit, it often breathes new life into that series, bringing with it a wave of renewed praise, viral discourse, and overdue appreciation.

We saw it with the Suits Renaissance. Animal Kingdom had its moment. And now? Mr. Robot has just landed in its entirety on Netflix, and the timing could not be more perfect or more eerily relevant.

(Scott McDermott/USA Network) Mr. Robot Has Mindbending, Deliciously Twisty, Innovative Storytelling

Seriously, Mr. Robot is one of the best-written series of all time. You can take that as hyperbole, or you can trust us and binge it.

There’s nothing quite like this series, and in an age where so much of television feels like more of the same, that speaks volumes.

‘Mr. Robot’ Just Hacked Into a New Streaming Home
Image
One of the most acclaimed dramas of the past decade has found a new streaming home. Netflix has announced that all four seasons of Mr. Robot will become a part of their catalog on July 3. The announcement comes more than five years after the series came to a close on the USA Network. The drama thriller created by Sam Esmail followed Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), senior cybersecurity engineer at Allsafe Cybersecurity. While the protagonist's job description sounds perfectly adequate, Elliot also secretly functions as a dangerous hacker.

The story of Mr. Robot positioned Elliot in the middle of a complicated situation due to his addiction issues. While Rami Malek's character is struggling to keep his life together, Darlene (Carly Chaikin) reveals that she's one of the hackers from the organization attempting to recruit her brother for very important assignments. Mr. Robot thrilled audiences over the course of four seasons. Across forty-five episodes,...

‘Severance’ Star Olafur Darri Olafsson Says Iceland’s Production Services Past Is Supercharging An Original Development Boom
Image
Exclusive: Iceland’s production services past has driven a creative development flurry, according to key local industry figures such as Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.

Primarily known in entertainment for housing big-budget U.S. productions such as HBO’s True Detective: Night Country and Christopher Nolan sci-fi Interstellar, Iceland has emerged out of the shadows of its past as a car commercials location to become a significant player in European TV co-productions. At the same time, its domestic sector has similarly grown with local networks and streamers buying and the likes of Netflix and CBS Studios investing.

Ólafsson, the Icelandic-American actor and producer who starred in Baltasar Kormákur’s series Trapped and Apple TV+ drama Severance, said overseas productions and the country’s favorable tax break have played a major role in the situation. He has just filmed Series Mania competition contender Reykjavik Fusion, a crime-meets-cookery drama series, for his production house ACT4,...

Sam Esmail: ‘Mr. Robot’ Had to Be a TV Series Because Hollywood Always Falsely Represented Real-Life Hackers
Image
Sam Esmail intended his cult hit USA Network series, Mr. Robot, as a feature film initially. He soon realized, midway through writing the script, that it had expanded considerably. Esmail shared during an interview that he was fascinated by the hacker culture and wanted to make a project that accurately represented it. He found that a TV series format was best suited for his story.

The series, starring Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek and Christian Slater, explores the story of a hacker with social anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and dissociative identity disorder. Mr. Robot ran for five seasons, with Esmail serving as the writer and director of multiple episodes in addition to his showrunning responsibility.

Every Season Of Rami Malek's Mr. Robot, Ranked
Image
In the broader culture, "Mr. Robot" is known as the show that started off great but quickly devolved into a meandering mess. You can see this with how the ratings plummeted sharply with the second season. By the time season 4 aired in 2019, the show was averaging a little more than a quarter of the viewership it was getting back in 2015. Seasons 3 and 4 may have been well-received by critics and the show's remaining fans, but that wasn't enough to convince viewers to return.

Among the fans who've stuck to the very end, season 2 is still known as "the bad one," the season they warn new viewers about ahead of time. The narrative is that this is the season you have to struggle through to get to the reward of seasons 3 and 4. But I for one think that's a flawed narrative. If I leave this Earth having accomplished only one thing, let...

A Different Look for Your Horror King! Bill Skarsgård Will Charm Your Pants off in This Little-Known Rom-Com
Image
The quest for love is hard enough, but try doing it with nothing but logic, a stopwatch, and a firm no-touching policy. That’s the dilemma at the center of Simple Simon. The oddball Swedish romantic comedy features Bill Skarsgård in a role that’s far removed from his usual terror-inducing characters. Before the actor was lurking in sewers, giving viewers an aversion for red balloons, he was Simon, an 18-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome who preferred the order of outer space to the chaos of human relationships. But when his brother Sam’s (Martin Wallström) breakup throws things off in his regimented world, Simon takes it upon himself to fix things the only way he knows how — science.

The 12 Best Mr. Robot Episodes, Ranked
Image
The USA Network hacking thriller "Mr. Robot" is one of the best and most underrated dramas of the past decade. Initially, "Mr. Robot" seemed like a risky project. While writer-director Sam Esmail established his merits as a creator with his highly underrated feature film directorial debut, "Comet," he had yet to prove himself as the showrunner of a complex narrative series. Rami Malek was rising star thanks to his role on HBO's "The Pacific," but the character of Elliot Alderson was very different from anything that he had done before.

All of these concerns evaporated after the first season reached its conclusion. With its stylistic direction, relevant social themes, electrifying soundtrack, and shocking twists, "Mr. Robot" was unlike anything else on television. It seems closer to an arthouse film than anything. The show contains allusions to such classics as "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," "Pi," and "Taxi Driver." "Mr. Robot" continued...

Image
Tom Wlaschiha and Jazzy de Lisser (“Game of Thrones”) have joined the cast of Viaplay’s major English-language original feature “Hilma.” The film is written and directed by Lasse Hallström, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Cider House Rules” and “My Life as a Dog.”

Steiner became a key figure and mentor for Hilma af Klint who created more than a thousand striking paintings, sketches and watercolors that remained largely unknown until decades after her death.

The film explores the enigmatic life of Klint, who navigated through a male-dominated artistic scene to eventually become one of the Western world’s first abstract artists.

‘Parallel’ DVD Review

Stars: Aml Ameen, Martin Wallström, Georgia King, Mark O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, Josh Blacker, Kathleen Quinlan, Chad Krowchuk, Michael Kopsa, Carrie Genzel, Bill Dow | Written by Scott Blaszak | Directed by Isaac Ezban

“That lady is wearing a wig!” is the first thought that comes to me at the start of Parallel… Shortly thereafter, the film throws up an interesting conceit and, aside from the wig, this film is extremely professionally made. It is a sci-fi mind bender with similar ambition to Looper.

A group of friends have created a parking app, and they are trying to seal the big deal, but it all goes wrong, and they lose out. The banter among the gang is believable and funny. The characters are likable and believable as people. There is a bouncy, fun, Ocean’s 11 vibe to a lot of the gang’s hijinks.

After a drunken night out, our friends come home...

Parallel (2018)
Martin Wallström on new sci-fi Parallel, his time on Mr. Robot – and why he loves Stellan Skarsgard
Parallel (2018)
Parallel is a new sci-fi from Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban, and features Swedish actor Martin Wallström in the leading role, and to we had the pleasure of speaking to the actor to mark the film’s release. Wallström talks to us on Zoom about the project and what lured him in, and compares himself to his character and how vital it is that he is able to understand the motives (some of which are questionable to say the least). We also ask him about his time spent on Mr. Robot alongside Academy Award winner Rami Malek, and ow sad he was for that experience to end – though he admits it was the right time. We also chat about Stellan Skarsgard, who he loves, and we love, and basically this turns into a Stellan love-in. Enjoy!

Some things you should never do. Go back in the water when the local mayor declares the shark nothing to worry about. Stay in the kitchen while your best friends head off to track down the knife-wielding maniac. Or, in my own case, agree to watch (and review) any film with horror in the write-up. Because horror and I are not good bedfellows.

Occasionally, though, I allow my optimism to get the better of me and…I dare! Which is why I ended up watching Parallel. This tells the story of four millennials, Noel (Martin Wallström from Mr. Robot), Devin (Aml Ameen from I May Destroy You), Leena (Georgia King from Devs) and Josh (Mark O’Brien from Ready Or Not). Under intense time pressure to deliver on an It project, they find a strange mirror in a hidden attic. How strange? Well, the mirror is a doorway: a portal to another parallel.

Crossing into a Multiverse Has Consequences in 'Parallel' Film Trailer
Parallel (2018)
"This is the biggest unfair advantage in human history." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Parallel, from filmmaker Isaac Ezban. This originally premiered in 2018 at all the fall genre fests: FrightFest, Morbido, Sitges, Utopia, and a few others including Fantasia in Montreal. A group of friends stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a "multiverse", but soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences. Whod've thought?! The film stars Aml Ameen, Martin Wallström, Georgia King, Mark O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, with David Harewood and Kathleen Quinlan. I dig the setup and the intro to the parallel universe, but I'm worried it will get really cheesy when bad things start happening. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Ezban's Parallel, direct from Vertical's YouTube: A group of friends stumble upon...

This Mr. Robot review contains spoilers.

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 4

Happy holidays from Mr. Robot, which seems as unconcerned as ever with actually wrapping up any aspect of its final season’s story. In place of the answers—or at the very least, minimal forward plot progression—we likely expected here, “Not Found” instead offers us a bizarre holiday tale, in which Elliot, Darlene, Dom and Tyrell face down some demons of both the literal and figurative variety on Christmas Eve.

First, some facts. Even though Elliot stole Olivia Cortez’s Cyprus login information, she doesn’t have high enough security clearance to achieve the Alderson siblings’ goal of wiping out Whiterose’s financial holdings. It’s Christmas Eve, and the mysterious Deus Group is set to meet the next day,...

Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)
TV Review: ‘Mr. Robot’ Season 4
Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)
It can be easy to forget quite how big a deal, in its early going, “Mr. Robot” was.

It eventually became, fairly enough, a hallmark for narrative and directorial excess. But the series, about Elliot, a hacker attempting to remake America, had the real-life effect of remaking the USA Network, shifting the cabler conclusively away from its previous model of sunny workplace dramedy. Its broader implications included the launches of executive producer Sam Esmail, with Amazon’s “Homecoming” and USA’s forthcoming “Briarpatch” to his credit, and star Rami Malek. And its conceit, that the world is governed by entities interested in seeding chaos for their own benefit, has seemed more urgent since the show’s 2015 premiere. The near-perfect first season had the right talent and the right timing.

But subsequent seasons’ refusal to consider the world outside Elliot’s head diminished its viewership and reputation. So it is that Season 4, the show’s last,...

‘Mr. Robot’ Trailer: USA Show’s Final Season is Simply Having a Violent Christmastime
Rami Malek
Sometimes, really bad things happen around Christmastime. So it seems to be the case for Elliot and the many individuals wrapped up in the global chaos of “Mr. Robot.”

The series, which returns for its fourth and final season in early October, finds Elliot (Rami Malek) once again dealing with the ramifications of trying to undo his hacktivist past. Still working with the pesky spectral presence of Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), Elliot’s at the center of a yuletide reversal of fortune that could turn back the clock on the grand, economy-destabilizing project that’s been brewing since the beginning of the series.

Also back to help tell the closing chapters in the story are cast members Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Bd Wong, Grace Gummer, Martin Wallström, and Michael Cristofer. It’s not a stretch to say that at least a few of these central figures in the series may...

‘Mr. Robot’ Teaser: First Look At the Intense Final Season
Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)
The first teaser for the fourth and final season of “Mr. Robot” is out, and the series is looking as intense as ever.

The teaser for the USA Network show doesn’t shed much in the way of plot information, but the somber music and lighting certainly fit the series’ bleak tone. An unseen woman questions series protagonist Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), asking him how many people he has hurt to get what he wants.

Alderson doesn’t answer, but there’s no doubt that many people have suffered over the last three twisty seasons of “Mr. Robot.” Malek plays a vigilante hacker with dissociative identity disorder and a host of other mental illnesses, and his efforts to free the American public from debt spirals into all sorts of chaos. Drug use, corporate rule, economic collapse, and similarly heavy themes are pervasive throughout the series, which has won two Emmys.

Full UK Trailer for Survival Film 'Ashes in the Snow' with Bel Powley
"It's not what you see, but how you see it..." Signature Entertainment has debuted a new UK trailer for the WWII survival drama Ashes in the Snow, based on the true story of a 16-year-old aspiring artist and her family deported to Siberia. The film is adapted from Ruta Sepetys' novel "Between Shades of Gray", and that original title was changed to prevent any confusion with the Fifty Shades of Grey series (as you all know). We featured a Us trailer in December before its release in January, but why not another to take a closer look at. Bel Powley stars as Lina, with a cast including Peter Franzén, Sophie Cookson, James Cosmo, Martin Wallström, Timothy Innes, Jonah Hauer-King, Sam Hazeldine. Described as a "beautifully executed yet heart-breaking, captivating and eye-opening war thriller that unveils a forgotten part of history in a way that makes you experience the despair...
