Joe List is Jeff, a jazz pianist and recovering alcoholic who is constantly haranguing his therapist (Louis C.K.) about his parents. When he gets the annual invite to the summer cabin of Mom (Paula Plum) and Dad (Robert Walsh), he decides to attend without his wife Beth (Sarah Tollemache), in order to finally confront his parents about their lack of open affection towards him. Can he do it in front of his loud Bostonian relatives? Wicked ya pisser.

When Louis C.K. attempted to restart his career after his sexual misconduct scandal, he did it gingerly by performing unannounced sets in small comedy clubs. He’s essentially doing the same thing with his return to filmmaking. This low-budget indie dramedy being released in a smattering of movie theaters (as of now, it’s not scheduled to be screened by any of the larger chains) reveals the controversial comic working in an uncharacteristically muted fashion. Lacking the acerbic edge of his brilliant work on the sitcom Louie and web series Horace and Pete, Fourth of July turns out to be something we would have never expected from its director/co-writer — bland.

Partly this seems because he’s working in collaboration with comedian Joe List, who co-wrote the screenplay, executive produced and stars in the lead role of Jeff, a recovering alcoholic and anxiety-ridden jazz pianist.

Billy Eichner doesn’t count Dave Chappelle as one of his “Bros.”

The “Billy on the Street” star criticized Chappelle’s jokes about queer and trans people during the Netflix comedy special “Stand Out: An LGBTQ Celebration,” released June 9 after being recorded during Netflix Is a Joke Fest last month. Eichner hosted the largest gathering of LGBTQ+ comics in one stand-up special, as Netflix described, but the “Bros” screenwriter and star took aim at the streamer at itself during his set.

“We all know how backwards and dangerous the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ laws are,” Eichner says. “Queer people, and especially trans people, are under legislative attack in this country. Trans people are being demeaned. They’re trying to dehumanize trans people. They’re trying to erase trans people. And I’m not even talking about Florida. I’m talking about Dave Chappelle’s latest Netflix special!”

Comedian Louis C.K. has revealed on his website on Friday that he directed a new indie film called “Fourth of July.”

The indie film will premiere at New York’s Beacon Theatre on June 30, before rolling out to other venues on July 1.

“Fourth of July” was written by Joe List and C.K. The “Louie” creator also self financed and directed the project. The film centers on a recovering alcoholic and jazz pianist in NYC who confronts his acerbic family during their annual Fourth of July vacation.

Having recently been fêted by the Recording Academy with a Grammy, comedian and admitted sexual harasser Louis C.K. is trying to rejuvenate his film career with a campaign to get theaters to screen his new movie, Fourth of July.

The secret movie written by C.K. and comic Joe List centers on Jeff (List), a recovering alcoholic and jazz pianist in NYC who confronts his acerbic family during their annual Fourth of July vacation. Sarah Tollemache, Paula Plum, Robert Walsh and Robert Kelly also star.

Fourth of July will premiere at New York’s Beacon Theater on June 30, with screenings to follow at Boston’s Shubert Theater on July 1, and The Vic in Chicago on July 2. Additional plans for exhibition have not yet been disclosed.

“We are still compiling and constantly adding to the list of theaters which I will post on the web page for the movie which is on my website,” shared C.K in an open letter to fans.

In 2017, Louis C.K. was set to return to filmmaking in a major way with “I Love You, Daddy,” an art film he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in. But in the months leading up to the controversial movie, multiple female comedians accused the comic of sexual misconduct. The charges, which he ultimately admitted to, caused the film’s release to be scrapped and the comedian’s career was temporarily derailed.

Now, five years later, Louis C.K. is gearing up to release another film. The comedian announced today that he has written, directed, and starred in a new feature titled “Fourth of July,” which is set to hit theaters this summer.
