'Scream' Star Matthew Lillard Jokes About 'Scream 7' Return: "It's Gonna Slay"
Image
Original Scream star Matthew Lillard was on hand at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida this past weekend to not only confirm his return to the beloved horror franchise, but to joke about how his seemingly deceased character will return in Scream 7. Lillard played Stu Macher in Wes Craven's 1996 classic, one half of the Ghostface killer alongside Skeet Ulrich's Billy Loomis. He was presumed dead after being stabbed numerous times and having a TV dropped on his head, but in the world of Scream, not everything is as it seems.

Per People, Lillard and Ulrich appeared on a panel together this past weekend at the Orange County Convention Center to discuss their time in the franchise and Lillard's return. Fans have been clamoring for years for the star to come back to the series that helped make him famous, and to drive that point home, Lillard commented: "I've been asked...

Skeet Ulrich Reveals 'Scream' Opening Sequence Almost Canceled Movie
Image
Skeet Ulrich, one of the stars of Wes Craven's groundbreaking slasher film of 1996, Scream, revealed that the beloved horror movie was in danger of being canceled during the first days of production, and it was all because of what Craven decided to do with the extremely violent opening sequence. Luckily, someone saved Scream.

Per People Magazine, Ulrich showed up at Mega Con 2025 in Orlando, and he spoke about the franchise. During a panel for Scream, the actor confirmed that the opening of the film featuring Drew Barrymore being sliced and diced by Ghostface was not well-received by producers. Apparently, they did not want to continue making the film "two weeks into filming," and director Wes Craven had to seek the support of others at Miramax Films:

"I don't know if you know, but we started off shooting the sequence with Drew Barrymore in the beginning of the movie and...

Patrick Dempsey in Talks To Return for Scream 7 After 24 Years Away
Image
It may have gotten off to a rocky start, but it appears as if the seventh film in the Scream franchise is back on track after a series of unfortunate setbacks, and if all goes well, we could see another fan-favorite character return for the next sequel. Happy Death Days Christopher Landon was initially set to direct the sequel, but he departed the project late in 2023 following the firing of star Melissa Barrera a month earlier, and the exit of Jenna Ortega shortly after that. Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson has since taken over, with the movie expected to arrive on February 27, 2026.

Neve Campbell has already signed on to once again reprise her iconic role of Sidney Prescott, and now it looks as if we might get an appearance from Patrick Dempsey in Scream 7 as well. The Greys Anatomy star hasnt been seen in the franchise since Scream 3,...

Courteney Cox Reveals Whether She Has Signed On for Scream 7
Courteney Cox
Courteney Cox is unquestionably excited that Kevin Williamson is directing Scream 7, but the actress has yet to ink a deal confirming her own official return as Gale Weathers. You cant get better than that choice, Cox said of Williamson helming the new Scream sequel during an appearance at this years Rock4EB! charity fundraiser. Its going to be fun. Nonetheless, despite her enthusiasm, Cox hasnt signed on to reprise perhaps her most famous role. The actress also said while appearing at the event over the weekend (per Variety):

Im not officially signed on. Im not, but there will be a Scream 7.

Williamson famously wrote the screenplay for the original Scream back in 1996, which was directed by the legendary filmmaker, Wes Craven. Williamson has remained tied to the horror series over the years, but he only served as an executive producer on Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

Strange Darling Star Wasn't 'Trying To Play Neve Campbell' in Scream
Image
Hitting the small screen in 2015, MTVs Scream was an attempt to bring the popular horror franchise into homes on a weekly basis. Lasting for three seasons, the heart of the series was undoubtedly Willa Fitzgerald, who portrayed Emma Duval, the target of Ghostfaces rage in Seasons 1 and 2. Now, eight years removed from her part in the franchise, Fitzgerald says she was never trying to play the role of Neve Campbells Sidney Prescott, but rather sought to bring something fresh to her character of Duval.

Appearing on Collider Ladies Night, Fitzgerald spoke about how the television version of Scream for better or worse looked to separate itself from the movies. People immediately noticed the change in Ghostfaces iconic mask, which became a hot button topic among fans who either loved or hated the series. For her, she believes the creators of the show were smart in trying to make it its own thing.

Scream Franchise Star David Arquette Has 'Extreme Fomo' Over Scream 7
Image
The last time audiences got to spend time with David Arquette's iconic Dewey Riley was in Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's superb Scream (2022). And, tragically, it was the final time. His last scene was a traumatic one for fans and, according to his interview with TooFab (in anticipation of his newest movie The Good Half), it was and remains equally traumatic for Arquette himself. As the franchise veteran of the first five Scream films said:

"I know, it's really still sad to me. Dewey was such an honor to play and be a part of those films and get to work with Wes and this incredible cast as well. It has been a grieving process."

TooFab asked Arquette about his experience working on the 2022 film, in particular. He goes into detail of the specific struggles, including the major difficulty that comes with promoting the movie while avoiding any dreaded spoilers.

10 Movie Death Fakeouts That Shocked Everyone
Image
Fakeout deaths in pop culture can be predictable, but unexpected returns create shock value. Surprise character revivals work best when the storyline hasn't been overwhelmed by resurrections. Resurrections or death fakeouts in movie franchises can intrigue viewers and make plot twists more engaging.

Fakeout deaths have become mildly predictable in pop culture, but some recent as well as older movies have managed to pull off shocking returns for characters the audience believed to be dead. Fantasy and sci-fi movie franchises feature characters who keep dying and coming back across many sequels, which usually results in the predictability element. If a series has established that resurrection and fakeout deaths are possible, the audience will expect it to happen again, so the writers dont have to let go of a fan-favorite.

Unexpected deaths in movies provoke shock, but if the audience fully buys the characters death, their subsequent return will be even better.

Scream 7 Star Neve Campbell Reveals Details of Sidney's Return in Slasher Sequel
Image
Slasher icon and Scream star Neve Campbell has revealed details regarding her role in the upcoming sequel, Scream 7. While Campbell was not expected to return for the seventh outing, after all manner of drama behind the scenes, she has now confirmed she will lead the follow-up, with Campbell also teasing the return of original stars Patrick Dempsey and Courteney Cox.

"We are going to follow Sidney. They did pitch the concept to me, and its the reason that I jumped on board."

While plot details remain under wraps, we can likely assume that Campbells Sidney Prescott will have spent the last few years preparing for the return of Ghostface, ala Jamie Lee Curtis Laurie Strode in the Halloween legacy sequel. Of course, even with all that preparation and training, its still plenty scary when that masked killer comes a-knocking.

The Acolyte Repeated A 1996 Horror Classic In Carrie-Anne Moss' Opening Scene
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for The Acolyte season 1, episode 1.

Carrie-Anne Moss's role as Master Indara in The Acolyte mirrors Drew Barrymore's role as Casey in Scream. Indara's early death set a dark tone for The Acolyte and defied the audience's expectations in the same way Casey's death in Scream did. Showrunner Leslye Headland successfully pulled off a major twist, which hints at her inspirations for The Acolyte and could be a sign of its quality.

Carrie-Anne Moss was heavily featured in the opening scene of The Acolyte, and her role in the Star Wars show pulled off a twist that was pioneered by a 1996 horror film. Moss plays Jedi Master Indara in The Acolyte, and her first scenes in the show featured her in a deadly battle against the Sith Acolyte Mae. Despite being a prominent part of The Acolyte's marketing and the first Jedi of the...

Scream 7 Director's Only Film Was a Massive Bomb; Can He Handle Ghostface?
Image
In the snake pit that is the world of franchises in Hollywood today, there's nothing more divisive than Scream. What began in 1996 is still alive and kicking, just not with the same spirit, strength, or tone. Scream's new generation is divisive in itself, with a refreshing of the concept that appeals to modern audiences, sheds away the skin of '90s nostalgia, and keeps thriving on the popularity of the horror genre.

The new sequels are able to bring together old and new fans, and the line is clear: both fan circles know their boundaries. You may prefer a rewatch or a premiere, but the important thing is that each has their own world to explore whenever they want.

However, the franchise has taken more than a nick recently. A solid stab in the form of a business plan remodeling that broke a few hearts and angered others. The new stars of the franchise,...

Sick is the New Sane: Why Scream 4 Still Rules 10 Years Later
Image
Even though I’m currently in the mix of celebrating indie horror this month, there was no way in hell that I, of all people, would miss celebrating the 10th anniversary of Wes Craven’s Scream 4 today. It’s a film that I’ve been shouting about from the proverbial rooftops for a decade now, and while it’s certainly been more widely embraced by horror fans in the last few years, Scream 4 is an entry in this series that gets far more grief than it deserves, and I think it rivals Scream 2 as the best sequel in the franchise as well. I’ll elaborate on all of that in a minute, but simply put, Scream 4 rules hard, and without a doubt, this final entry in Wes Craven’s oeuvre remains a prescient and thought-provoking examination of the detrimental side of social media and how our...

Drew Barrymore in Scream (1996)
MTV's 'Scream': Bella Thorne to Recreate Drew Barrymore Scene
Drew Barrymore in Scream (1996)
MTV's Scream series may not be using the iconic Ghostface Killer mask, but it will recreate one of the original Scream film's most remembered scenes. In 1996, it came as a shock to audiences when Drew Barrymore didn't make it past the opening act, as she was set up to be the star of the movie. She was dispensed rather quickly by the main slasher. Now, MTV has gotten another big star, and it's confirmed that this same opening act will be used once again to kickstart this small screen reboot.

Disney mega-star Bella Thorne stated that she has been secretly cast by MTV for this homage to the original Wes Craven horror classic during a Facebook chat on Yahoo! Celebrity. Bloody Disgusting was later able to confirm this report. About appearing in the show, Bella Thorne stated:

"Yes it is true. i will re-enact the famous scene of drew barrymore in the original series.

Scream: Ghostface’s Top 10 Kills
Like most horror film series’, as the saga continues the kills typically increase and become more elaborate in an effort to outdo the predecessor. But with this heightened focus on blood and body count, the overall quality of the movies usually decreases (often drastically). That does not mean that horror sequels cannot be fun – they certainly can, just do not expect anything groundbreaking from them.

The Scream series is no different. In 1996, the first Scream was praised for its witty, self-referential script and cast of hot young Hollywood stars – a new kind of horror movie for a more aware and pop culture-obsessed generation. The second film, released just a year later, tried to match its forerunner in innovation and cleverness, but far too often fell into typical horror sequel trappings. And the third film, well . . . let’s just say that a third film does exist. Oh damn, and there is a fourth film,...
