Rakoff’s former personal agent confirmed the news with Deadline this morning.

Born on on February 6, 1927, in Toronto Rakoff was the third of seven children. After graduating from the University of Toronto with a psychology degree, Rakoff spent time as a news reporter. What Happened to Superman IV: The Quest For Peace?
Image
Unlike Superman and Superman II, Superman III didn’t even bother teasing the next installment in the franchise. Really, by the time that movie’s end credits hit, did anyone even want another entry? Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.

If you remember from our previous instalment of What Happened to This Movie?!, Superman III was plagued with all sorts of problems both on and off the screen. So what happened this time around? Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

And so, let’s suit up one more...

Raw Deal: Revisiting the most obscure Arnold Schwarzenegger films of the 80s
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger made a whole slew of classic 80s action movies. Still, one remains totally obscure despite being released smack dab in the middle of his amazing The Terminator to Predator run of movies from 1984-87. That film in 1986’s Raw Deal. A formulaic 80s action flick, it’s the most modestly mounted Schwarzenegger action epic of the era, with Arnie coerced into starring in it to complete a long-standing contract he had with producer Dino De Laurentiis following Conan The Barbarian.

In it, Schwarzenegger is somewhat unconvincingly cast as a small-town sheriff named Kaminski, who used to be an FBI agent but was forced out of the bureau after roughing up a suspect. He’s recruited by his old mentor (The Night Stalker’s legendary Darren McGavin) whose son was killed by the Chicago mob. He wants Kaminski to go undercover in the mob and tear them apart from the inside.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Sound Of Music
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It's been nearly 60 years since Julie Andrews first sang about how the hills of Austria were alive with the sound of music, but "The Sound of Music" remains a beloved cinematic treasure. Vividly colorful, unabashedly musical, and anchored by Andrews' performance, the story of Maria the would-be nun, and her small army of new wards — the Von Trapp children — is still rewatched and referenced often across the world.

With more than half a century of retrospect, "The Sound of Music" has also become a bit of a historical document: much of the film's cast and crew has since passed away, with the exception of Andrews herself and five of the seven actors who embodied the Von Trapp kids. Heather Menzies (Louisa) and Charmian Carr (Liesl) have both passed away in recent years, as has Christopher Plummer, who embodied family patriarch...

Warning Shot
Image
This mid-60s detective story has the right ingredients — a good mystery and interesting characters. David Jannsen gets to play a ‘Bosch’- style lone wolf investigator given a public thrashing for a ‘mistake’ that he knows was no mistake at all. Can a ‘bad cop’ redeem himself? The parade of mid-level guest stars — Stefanie Powers, Joan Collins, Lillian Gish, Steve Allen — may resemble a TV movie, but the tense show has a good feel for Los Angeles and the new swingin’ singles lifestyle. It might be Buzz Kulik’s best job of direction, and it has a great music score by Jerry Goldsmith.

The Daily Stream: Private Benjamin Is An Unapologetic Feminist Icon
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "Private Benjamin" (1980)

Where You Can Stream It: Showtime

The Pitch: Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) has dreamed of one thing since she was eight years old, according to the film's opening title card: essentially, to be a wife. Specifically, "All I want [...] is a big house ... nice clothes, two closets, a live-in maid, and a professional man for a husband." "Private Benjamin" starts by giving Judy everything she's ever wanted, starting with a huge wedding to a professional man named Yale Goodman (played perfunctorily by Albert Brooks), who promptly dies while consummating their marriage later that same night.

Judy was a divorcée (she was previously married at 20) and widow by the age of 28. Her family didn't know what to do with her,...

He’s played everything from an indestructible cyborg from the future in the Terminator movies, to a Russian cop in Red Heat, by way of powerful barbarian in Red Sonja – the unmistakable, cinematic force that is Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder turned one-man cinematic industry, whose films, be they fantasy adventure, out-and-out action or science fiction thrillers, have always packed a punch at the box office. Ralph Fiennes in Spider (2002)
The Actors Who Have Played Spider-Man
Ralph Fiennes in Spider (2002)
With great power comes great responsibility. And the power of getting to don Peter Parker’s beloved red and blue tights has been bestowed only on a few. Despite it seeming like a new Spider-Man movie is coming to theaters every year—and to be fair that’s not too far from the truth—just three actors have played the character in live-action on the big screen. When the web is slightly widened to encompass television, the number of live-action Parkers increases, but they’re comparatively obscure.

Truth be told, there have only been a handful of Spider-Men, and each has left a strikingly distinct and unique spin on the old Web-Head. For that reason, we’ve decided to look back at the most renowned wallcrawlers and reexamine what each one brought to the table.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Facing Extinction Without Emergency Funding
Image
London’s iconic Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre has said it is facing closure because the coronavirus pandemic has had a “devastating” impact on its finances.

In a stark submission to a UK parliamentary committee, the 23-year-old institution warned that if it is unable to open its doors before September, it will require £5M ($6M) in urgent funding to avoid collapse.

“Without emergency funding and the continuation of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, we will spend down our reserves and become insolvent,” Shakespeare’s Globe said in evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

The theatre, a replica of William Shakespeare’s original 1599 Elizabethan open-air venue, said it has been unable to access Arts Council England funding due its size, while other government support schemes have not been enough to plug the financial hole blown open by coronavirus.

“We are a model for the non-subsidized arts sector that is well-run,...

The Criminal
Gangland London, 1960: Expatriate director Joseph Losey gives the Brit crime film a boost with a brutal gangster tale starring the ultra-tough Stanley Baker — and seemingly every up & coming male actor on the casting books. A committed thief returns to his craft the moment he’s freed from prison, but the emphasis is on the nasty betrayals and squeeze-plays of the criminal underworld, that conspire to foil Baker’s plans.

"Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood" - Brad Pitt Is 'Cliff Booth'
Thanks to the critical, box office and award-winning success of writer/director Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood", actor Brad Pitt who plays movie stunt double, bodyguard 'Cliff Booth' in the film, is open to reprising his character for an extended episode, 'streaming mini-series', featuring new content and character backstories:

"...I look at a mini-series where you can spend much more time on characters and story and explore angles you don't always get to do in films", said Pitt.

"So much of these films end up on the cutting room floor because they just don't fit in that box.

"That's why I think it's interesting that Tarantino previously took 'Hateful Eight' and ostensibly repurposed it as a three-part series. It's almost the best of both worlds.

"You have the cinema experience that exists, but you can actually put more content into the series format."

Holocaust
This four part, eight hour miniseries turns the fate of a family of German Jews into a sprawling drama that covers all the bases of the holocaust horror. It was strong stuff and a big Emmy winner, boosting the careers of James Woods and Michael Moriarty. His warped charisma as a psychotic Nazi is so good that he’s consistently more interesting than the courageous victims. As for Meryl Streep, she became an instant star — everybody remembered her from this. Although it’s been called ‘The Holocaust for Dummies,’ it’s a quality show. Looking from today’s perspective, after forty years of Political Correctness adjustments, I’m not sure any two viewers will react in quite the same way.

Mark Rylance, Jude Law and Sting to Celebrate Peace One Day's 20th Anniversary
Oscar-winner Sir Mark Rylance will lead celebrations for Peace One Day's 20th anniversary at Shakespeare’s Globe on London’s Bankside this September.

The not-for-profit organisation, which has successfully led processes that have resulted in ceasefire in some of the world’s most hostile regions, began in 1999 at the Globe when Sir Mark was in post as its founding Artistic Director.

Peace One Day’s founder Jeremy Gilley had a vision of creating a day of ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date – Peace Day. The Un made this vision a reality in 2001 by unanimously declaring the 21st September to be the International Day of Peace. By last year over a billion people were aware of the day.

Twenty years after it was launched, Sir Mark will join a host of stars to look back at Peace One Day’s achievements. The day-long celebration will comprise panel discussions and readings,...

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood 4 Hour Extended Cut May Come To Netflix
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is just one of the numerous blockbusters released this year that approached the three hour mark, but it sounds like an even longer cut of Tarantino’s latest masterpiece may be headed to Netflix soon.

According to The New York Times entertainment reporter Kyle Buchanan, Tarantino told many actors excised from his epic ode to the 1960s that their parts would be reinstated in an extended edition headed for the streaming service. However, it sounds like this new cut of the movie won’t be one complete feature but rather, a multiple-part miniseries not unlike his recent retooling of The Hateful Eight that hit Netflix earlier this year.

I keep hearing Tarantino told the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood actors that he’ll put their deleted scenes back when he recuts the film into episodes for Netflix, akin to what he recently did...

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 4-Hour Cut May Be Heading to Netflix
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
There's a decent chance we're going to see a much longer cut of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Recently, a rumor popped up, via entertainment reporter Kyle Buchanon, that stated the director was planning on releasing a longer cut for Netflix, much like he did with The Hateful Eight, which would be cut into episodes. Buchanon, taking to Twitter, had this to say.

"I keep hearing Tarantino told the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actors that he'll put their deleted scenes back when he recuts the film into episodes for Netflix, akin to what he recently did with Hateful Eight."

Were it only for that tweet, this would merely exist in the plausible rumor mill. Now, however, we have further evidence from one of the stars of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that further confirms this rumor. Nicholas Hammond, who plays Sam Wanamaker in...

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
The Making of ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Was a Throwback to Studios’ Pre-Franchise Glory Days
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
After the premiere, Quentin Tarantino is sweating on a balmy night under the stars at the sprawling “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” afterparty at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The elegiac 1969 showbiz bromance about DiCaprio’s stressed-out aging western star and his zen stuntman/driver (Brad Pitt) opens at an anxious time for Hollywood.

Certainly, Sony chief Tom Rothman is worrying about his opening weekend numbers against holdover “The Lion King.” That’s partly because this is Tarantino’s widest release — 3,659 theaters, including 35 and 70mm — and his first in summer primetime. Experts predict an opening of anywhere from $25 million-$50 million, but what really matters is how long an original movie anchored by two global movie stars can sustain itself.

In his first film made without the patronage of Harvey Weinstein, Tarantino’s producers were longtime lieutenant Shannon McIntosh and David Heyman. He’d wanted to work with the “Harry Potter” producer on “The Hateful Eight,...

The trailer is packed full of incredibly fun and entertaining new footage that fans are going to love. The film is set in Los Angeles during the summer of 1969, and it follows the lives of actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) as they make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore.

Charles Manson and his cult also play a role in the story, and as we’ll see in this trailer, it looks like Pitt’s character is enticed and lured into the family. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out, but the story definitely leads to the...

New Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Posters Feature Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton
We’ve got a couple of fun new posters to promote Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Both of them feature movie posters for the fake films of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Rick Dalton.

Fantastic First Trailer for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Here it is! The first trailer has been released for the ninth film of director Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and it looks awesome! As you’ll see, it’s classic Tarantino.

The movie is set in La in the summer of 1969, it follows a time in the lives of an actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Brad Pitt), and then, of course, there’s the Manson Family who is part of the haunting backdrop of the story, along with their potential victim Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie).

This is a lively and upbeat trailer and one of my favorite aspects of it was actor Mike Moh, who seems to perfectly play Bruce Lee. We even get to see a little sparing between he and Pitt’s character. It’s a great little scene!

This movie has such an incredibly impressive cast, and I can’t wait to see it!

How Ariana Grande’s ‘7 Rings’ Took a ‘Sound of Music’ Classic to the Top
Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Charmian Carr, Angela Cartwright, Duane Chase, Nicholas Hammond, Kym Karath, Heather Menzies-Urich, and Debbie Turner in The Sound of Music (1965)
A few months before the film version of “The Sound of Music” hit the silver screen, a song plugger working the catalog of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein approached label owner Dave Kapp with a plan to turn one of the songs from the score into a hit single, thinking it would boost the box office potential of the movie. That resulted in Jack Jones recording “My Favorite Things” for his first Christmas album, but the song did not become a hit. That song plugger’s dream finally comes true this week, some 54 years after the film’s release, as “My Favorite Things” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks to a reinterpretation by Ariana Grande on her new single, “7 Rings.”

Grande updated the lyrics of the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein classic after a shopping spree at Tiffany’s, transforming “Raindrops on roses/And whiskers on kittens/Bright...

Bruce Dern Will Replace Burt Reynolds in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
It was a shock to learn that Burt Reynolds had passed away. I hoped that he already had already shot his scenes for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but that wasn’t the case.

According to Deadline, Tarantino has cast Bruce Dern in the role that Reynolds was supposed to play. The two actor previously worked together on The Hateful Eight. I’ve been a fan of Dern for years, so it’s awesome to see that he’s joined the film.

Meanwhile, Danny Strong, Sydney Sweeney, Rumer Willis, Dreama Walker, Margaret Qualley, Costa Ronin, Victoria Pedretti and Madisen Beaty have been cast in the film as well. Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
The cast of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood keeps growing, with Scoot McNairy, coming aboard for a supporting role. The actor will portray a character known as Business Bob Gilbert, a cowboy who plays a role on a popular Western TV series. Leonardo DiCaprio's main character Rick Dalton is said to be the lead character of a former hit Western series, so it's possible that Gilbert is one of Dalton's co-stars, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The story centers around DiCaprio's Rick Dalton and Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth, Dalton's longtime stunt double on the Western TV series. Both men find themselves struggling to find a place in a new Hollywood that embraces the counter-culture values of the 1960s, that they don't recognize one bit. Their plot thickens when Dalton gets a new next door neighbor, an up and coming young actress named Sharon Tate,...

Guilty by Suspicion
Movies about the blacklist aren’t common, probably because as Robert Vaughn wrote, the period produced no happy stories, ‘Only Victims.’ Robert de Niro, Annette Bening and George Wendt give a bite of immediacy to the way the blacklist upset careers and blighted lives. Few of us would like to be publicly branded an Enemy of the People, but doing so seems to be America’s number one spectator sport.
