‘Hill Street Blues’: THR’s 1981 Review
Image
On January 15, 1981, NBC premiered the police drama Hill Street Blues, which went on to air for seven seasons and collect 26 Emmy Awards wins during its run. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of the show’s early episodes is below:

Wouldn’t it be ironic if Hill Street Blues lost the cutting edge that prompted the critics to rave and the Emmys to flow — and the ratings picked up? Now ensconced in a Thursday night position opposite 20/20 on ABC and movies on CBS, the second season debut of Hill Street, directed by supervising producer Greg Hoblit, still has the qualities and quality that made critics wax effusive, and which apparently turned a lot of viewers off.

For first-time viewers, the carnival of characters which gives the series its richness for addicts such as this viewer, may seem initially confusing. The structure is still the bits-and-pieces-flow-of-events unfolding over the course...

Jaleel White On Why He Shot Down Possible ‘Family Matters’ Reboot: “If It’s Just A Cash Grab … I’m Not Interested”
Image
Jaleel White played Steve Urkel in the ABC sitcom Family Matters for nine seasons, but don’t expect the actor to revisit the role if it’s just a “cash grab.”

In a new interview, White revealed that he shot down reprising his role of the annoying next-door neighbor in a possible reboot of the sitcom that was part of the Tgif block of programming.

“I embrace the Tgif legacy, but I’m also careful to acknowledge that Tgif was a sinking ship, and you cannot make shows like that right now,” White said on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “I feel like [Fuller House] got away with it because they have a schmaltzy, kind of vanilla thing that they do that’s very Hallmarkish to be quite honest and it benefits Candace [Cameron Bure] and that’s wonderful, but I just didn’t feel like we could get away with that same brand of humor.

'You'd Watch for One Episode': Steve Urkel Actor on Why Family Matters Revival Won't Happen
Image
Many classic sitcoms from years past have been revived with new sequel shows, but don't expect Family Matters to get the same treatment. Jaleel White, who rose to fame as the former child star who played breakout character Steve Urkel, has explained why it's better to leave Family Matters back in the past as a product of its time.

Per People, the actor commented on a possible revival while speaking to fans during his "The Evolution of Jaleel White" panel at 90s Con 2024. He explained that while he loves Family Matters, he's just not confident in a potential revival's prospects of success. Part of that has to do with losing some cast members who've since passed away, including Michelle Thomas in 1998 and Rosetta LeNoire in 2002. White also feels that a show about Urkel as a happily married adult wouldn't be as intriguing as following the character when he was younger and faced more challenges.

‘Australian Survivor’ shockeroo: Villains vote out [Spoiler] after 2 medical emergencies and historic ‘choice’
Image
The premiere episode of “Australian Survivor: Heroes V Villains” ended with a shocking tribal council in which the Villains truly lived up to their name. To recap, two of their 12 tribe members, Jackie Glazier from “Champions vs. Contenders” (2018) and George Mladenov from “Brains V Brawn,” ended up getting seriously injured in the immunity challenge. They were both sent to the hospital, where they would be able to remain for 24 hours, per the show’s rules, before being permanently removed.

After the Villains tribe lost the challenge and attended tribal council, host Jonathan Lapaglia had them vote as usual, without announcing Jackie or George’s conditions. The votes were cast and then Jonathan revealed that Jackie’s fractured collarbone was too serious for her to remain on the island, so she was officially out. George’s injury was less severe, though he would still be kept overnight at the infirmary as they monitored him.

10 oldest Emmy winners of Best Drama Supporting Actor: Which recordbreaker barely makes the cut now?
Image
As Primetime Emmy anomalies go, the 1982 Best Drama Supporting Actor lineup stands out as one of the most noteworthy. For the first and only time in any category, every nominee was a cast member on the same program, namely the police procedural “Hill Street Blues.” The five contenders – Taurean Blaque, Michael Conrad, Charles Haid, Michael Warren, and Bruce Weitz – ranged in age from 36 to 56, with their characters varying in rank from officer to sergeant. Conrad, the eldest, was ultimately chosen as the victor for the second year in a row.

“Hill Street Blues” also achieved its second of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories in 1982, along with wins for Best Actor (Daniel J. Travanti) and Best Writing. Conrad, who was originally the third oldest man to prevail in his category, has since been surpassed by seven others, five of whom were over 70.

Since 1959, a total of 39 actors have won for...

Blacque was one of the few regulars who stayed with the Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll series for its entire run. In 1982, he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. It was a landmark year for “Hill Street Blues,” which also saw nominations for Michael Conrad, Michael Warren, Bruce Weitz, Charles Haid in the supporting category, with Conrad taking homing the Emmy for his role as Sgt.

Taurean Blacque, Det. Neal Washington on ‘Hill Street Blues,’ Dies at 82
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Taurean Blacque, who portrayed the streetwise Det. Neal Washington on all seven seasons of the acclaimed NBC cop show Hill Street Blues, died Thursday in Atlanta following a brief illness, his family announced. He was 82.

From 1989-90, Blacque played Henry Marshall opposite Vivica A. Fox and others as an original castmember on the NBC daytime soap opera Generations, the first serial to include — from the start — a Black family as part of the main storyline. His character owned ice cream parlors in Chicago.

In 1982, Blacque received a supporting actor Emmy nomination for his work as the toothpick-dependent Washington on Hill Street but lost out to co-star Michael Conrad. Amazingly, the other three nominees — Charles Haid, Michael Warren and Bruce Weitz — also came from the 1981-87 series, created by Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll.

Bochco and producer-director Gregory Hoblit chose Blacque to say “Previously...

‘The White Lotus’ women just made Emmys history
Image
In the lead-up to this year’s Emmy nominations, most pundits expected the HBO anthology series “The White Lotus” to pick up multiple acting bids, but almost none were bold enough to predict its eventual haul of eight. Nearly every member of the first season’s ensemble cast has a shot at the gold, with Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy, and Steve Zahn competing in the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor category and Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, and Sydney Sweeney taking up all but two spots in the corresponding female lineup.

Although 15 other limited programs have amassed at least three featured male notices apiece, “The White Lotus” is the first to net more than three supporting actress bids. Furthermore, it stands as one of only three live action shows of any genre to receive five same-year nominations in a single primetime acting category. This is...

‘Hill Street Blues’ made Emmys history 40 years ago
Image
Emmy voters certainly didn’t spread the wealth around with the 2022 nominations. Five of the seven supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie went to HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Four of the six guest actor in a drama series noms were nabbed by HBO’s “Succession.” And HBO Max’s “Hacks” scored four of the six guest actress in a comedy series nominations.

But multiple nominations in one category isn’t anything new in the Emmy universe. In fact, Emmy history was made 40 years ago when NBC’s landmark police procedural drama “Hill Street Blues” earned all five nominations for supporting actor in a drama series. Michael Conrad won his second consecutive Emmy as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus, who would end the morning roll call meetings with “Let’s be careful out there.” Conrad faced competition from the series’ Taurean Blacque, Charles Haid, Michael Warren and Bruce Weitz.

It was a night of record-making firsts and honoring legends from Hollywood’s Golden Era. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1982.

One of the most celebrated dramas of all time set new records and dominated the acting categories. “Hill Street Blues” received 16 major nominations, breaking the two-decade record of 14 for “Playhouse 90” in 1959.

Since 1959, a total of 38 actors have won for...

Exclusive: More than three years ago, Netflix successfully opened a new area of original programming, the family sitcom, with a reboot of Warner Bros TV’s Tgif comedy Full House. The sequel series was a breakout hit, tapping into nostalgia for those who had grown up with the original series while also drawing a new generation of viewers.

That success was probably not lost on WarnerMedia executives as they are prepping the launch of a streaming platform to rival Netflix and have been discussing with Warner Bros TV brass library titles they can exploit for the new service.

I hear the WarnerMedia streamer is eyeing reboots of other Wbtv-produced classic Tgif comedies, like Step by Step, Perfect Strangers, its spinoff Family Matters, as well as Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. Sources stressed that talks are in exploratory stages, and it’s unclear whether any of the potential revivals would come to fruition,...

Will ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ earn 4 Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy nominations for Season 2?
Elisabeth Moss
Last year “The Handmaid’s Tale” won eight Emmys and had three of its actresses take home trophies in various categories. Elisabeth Moss won Best Drama Actress, Ann Dowd took Best Drama Supporting Actress and Alexis Bledel won Best Drama Guest Actress. Moss currently sits on top of Gold Derby’s lead actress chart and will surely earn another nomination for Season 2. Where it gets more interesting is in the supporting actress category where the Hulu hit could possibly receive as many as four nominations.

SEE2018 Emmys eligibility period ends May 31, unless you’re ‘Westworld,’ ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and …

Dowd was a surprise winner last year for her role as Aunt Lydia the brutal woman in charge of the handmaids. She is currently in first place on Gold Derby’s charts and will likely be nominated again. Samira Wiley, who plays Offred’s friend Moira, was also nominated as...

Graceland Boss Defends Briggs' Risky Ruse, Teases Finale's Big Reveal
Daniel Sunjata and Aaron Tveit in Graceland (2013)
It ain’t easy living in Graceland.

Just last week on the USA Network drama, de facto team leader Paul Briggs (played by Daniel Sunjata) was shot in the leg by one roommate and slugged by another, after his Machiavellian manipulations and super-secretive ruses put his pals in jeopardy again and again.

Briggs is even at the root of comparatively mild-mannered Dale Jakes’ (Brandon Jay McLaren) new dilemma, seeing as the Ice agent “peeled off” some greenbacks during his latest bust, to serve as “get gone” money should “sin eater” Briggs need it.

After everything she's been through, and everything she's done, Paige Arkin is making a change.

In the "Graceland" Season 3 premiere last week, she announced she's moving out.

Since the middle of Season 2, when Serinda Swan's character got involved in tackling the sex trafficking ring, the case took her further away from the team, and especially Mike Warren (Aaron Tveit), who was also working the case. Turning Mike's hospital details over to Sid though, after she found out Mike lied about what happened to Lina (the young woman forced into the ring), changed everything. Mike luckily survived ...

'Graceland' Creator Discusses What Happened to Mike
Daniel Sunjata and Aaron Tveit in Graceland (2013)
It's been a long wait for Graceland fans to find out whether or not Mike Warren (Aaron Tveit) was saved after Sid killed the agent in the Season 2 finale. The situation was further complicated since it was Mike's partner and girlfriend that gave him up to Sid in the first place.

The Graceland Season 3 premiere played with viewers' emotions for a bit by showing a gravesite scene, as well as, mentioning Mike was dead only to reveal that Mike was very much alive. Injured and recovering, but Mike Warren was saved. Well, he's alive at least.

Did you see that coming? Part one of the "Dancing With the Stars" finale ended with one of the season's most surprising eliminations. Only four of our users predicted all of tonight's outcomes: MrFilmkritik, Nate, Mike Warren, and kiiwiih. -Break- Could conservative fans push Sadie Robertson to upset win on 'DWTS'? They correctly forecast the resurgence of Alfonso Ribeiro, who struggled last week after injuring himself, but was able to deliver two perfect dances in a row this week: the first a reprise of his week-one jive, and the second a showstopping freestyle number that included an homage to his tap-dancing Broadway roots. But they also foresaw the downfall of Bethany Mota. The online star came to "DWTS" as a social-media powerhouse, with as passionate following on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. She also had the benefit of pro partner Derek Hough, the show's all-time biggest champ with five previous mirror ball trophy.
