After 15 years at the helm, Sandra den Hamer is to step down this autumn as director of Amsterdam-based Eye Filmmuseum, the Netherlands’ main hub for film culture.

The popular and respected den Hamer, a former artistic director of International Film Festival Rotterdam, is credited with overseeing the Eye’s transformation into a contemporary museum of “international standing”.

Exclusive: Fortissimo takes world rights to survival thriller that pits a writer against a hitman who gets more than he bargained for.

Fortissimo Films has acquired worldwide rights, outside Benelux and Scandinavia, to writer/director Alex van Warmerdam’s upcoming project, Schneider vs. Bax (working title).

The project is Van Warmerdam’s first since Borgman, which screened In Competition at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Fortissimo is commencing pre-sales immediately.

Schneider vs. Bax revolves around two men, a contract killer and a writer, battling each other for survival. Schneider, the contract killer and a devoted family man, is offered a rush job on the morning of his birthday to liquidate Ramon Bax. Bax is a 50 year old writer living in his secluded cabin by the lake. What seems to be a simple assignment turns out to be more than expected.

Netherlands enters Borgman into Oscar race

Alex van Warmerdam’s thriller submitted by the Netherlands for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Dutch feature film Borgman by director Alex van Warmerdam has been chosen as the official entry from the Netherlands to the Academy’s Best Foreign Language Film Award.

The film is about a vagrant that enters the lives of an arrogant upper-class family, turning their lives into a psychological nightmare in the process.

Written by Warmerdam, it was produced by Marc van Warmerdam of Graniet Film. Fortissimo Films handles international sales.

The film was in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival and has been sold to dozens of countries including the Us, where Drafthouse Films acquired North American rights and will release theatrically in 2014.

The film is distributed in the Netherlands by Cinéart and has been screening there since Aug 28.

Dutch Genre-Bender Borgman Acquired by Drafthouse Films; New Still and More Info
Alex van Warmerdam's Borgman slipped in and out of Cannes 2013 under our radar, but Drafthouse Films honed in on the disturbing and apparently utterly unique flick, snapping it for North America and including it in the "Drafthouse Alliance." Read on for more details along with a new still.

Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced the acquisition of North American rights to the bizarro domestic thriller Borgman from this year's Cannes Film Festival. Directed by award-winning auteur Alex van Warmerdam (Grimm, Abel), Borgman is the first Dutch film in Cannes competition in almost 40 years. A Us theatrical and VOD/digital release is planned for 2014, and Films We Like in Toronto will handle Canadian distribution.
