The Costumes in ‘Fancy Dance’ Do Sophisticated Storytelling — Without Needing to Be Fancy
Image
Three weeks of prep is not long for a feature film, but that is the amount of time Erica Tremblay’s “Fancy Dance” had before shooting. The film follows a Native woman named Jax (Lily Gladstone) who must balance caring for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) with trying to find her missing sister/Roki’s mother Tawi (Hauli Sioux Gray) and surviving the meddling influences that might tear the family apart. It takes place on the fragile edges of Late Stage Capitalism, gas stations and creek beds, Walmart parking lots and staged houses for lease. No one in the film, frankly, has the time to shop for clothes.

Nonetheless, costume designer Amy Higdon needed to craft looks that tell us what’s important to these characters and who they’re trying to be to each other. And she needed to do it fast. The costume team had only two chances...

Fancy Dance – Review
Image
The parade of smaller independent features continues to bump up against the blockbusters as the Summer continues to sizzle. Here’s a quirky drama that has similar themes to the modestly budgeted period piece from last weekend The Bikeriders. In that film, a group of motley outsiders in the early 60s forged a family via a motorcycle club. Family is at the forefront of this film, though it’s set in the modern day, and rather than Windy City bikers, we’re given a look inside Native American culture. Oh, and as in the former flick, the principals are often living on the “wrong side” of the law, having to dodge the authorities, giving an added meaning to its title, Fancy Dance.

The story takes us inside the world of thirty-something Jax (Lily Gladstone) and her teenage niece Roki (Isabel DeRoy-Olson) who share a home on the Seneca-Cayuga Nation Reservation in Oklahoma.

Fancy Dance review – Lily Gladstone shines in knotty Native American family drama
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Film-maker Erica Tremblay tells a thoughtful tale about a woman’s battle to care for her niece against backdrop of the authorities’ ambivalence towards Native American peoples

In Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone made a deep impression with her stillness and controlled presence. This is different; in a fiction-feature debut from Native American documentary-maker Erica Tremblay, Gladstone’s performance is looser, more open, less reserved. Simply put: she does more acting, and gives strength and substance to a dense, knotty family drama which though maybe anticlimactic in the final act – and too reliant on a handgun plot-point – is fluent and heartfelt.

Gladstone plays Jax, living on Oklahoma’s Seneca-Cayuga Nation reservation, trying to put behind her a life of dealing drugs but still on the fringes of crime. She has been looking after her teen niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), since the disappearance of Roki’s mother Tawi,...

Fancy Dance (2024) Review — Lily Gladstone Embodies Strength and Resilience
Image
The upcoming Apple TV+ film Fancy Dance, now playing in theaters before its streaming release on June 28th, is the type of unromanticized character study that should be celebrated. Seen through a double feminist and cultural safety lens, Fancy Dance is patient in the way the character study unfolds, sneaking up on you with its modern-day tale of colonialism still ongoing in America today.

Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress Lily Gladstone is at the center of the story. The Indigenous actress gives a convincing performance as a woman who embodies strength and resilience with an unwavering and calm demeanor when seen. However, when alone, she displays the type of private vulnerability that packs a poignant punch to a sometimes stagnant story.

‘Fancy Dance’ Review: An Intense Look at Native Lives Being Swept Under the Rug
Image
Erica Tremblay’s Fancy Dance is a sunshine noir set on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation of the filmmaker’s people in Oklahoma. The place is a food desert where there are few jobs for people, who have tense relations with nearby non-indigenous communities. Economic precarity and the residents’ uneasy relationship with federal governance is legible just about everywhere you look, and Tremblay’s granular attention to place makes sure that you take note.

The reservation’s residential areas mostly consist of mobile homes or Levittown-style basic housing, and the interiors of those spaces look frozen in the 1980s: all thick carpet, bulky furniture, and cathode-ray televisions. Carolina Costa’s stark, brightly lit cinematography calls attention to the harsh conditions of life on the reservation, with run-down stores littering dusty, inarable land like outposts of a frontier long ago mapped and exploited of resources by others. It’s a place so sparsely...

Lily Gladstone Stars in Acclaimed Drama 'Fancy Dance' Official Trailer
Image
"Everybody's out looking for me, who's looking for my sister?" Apple TV has finally unveiled the official trailer for a film titled Fancy Dance, which has been stuck in release limbo for the last year or more. This originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, a full six months before Lily Gladstone's Killers of the Flower Moon premiered in Cannes. Many critics say her performance in Fancy Dance is even better, but it hasn't ever been released since 2023. Now it's finally set for a theatrical + streaming debut this summer. The bond between an Indigenous girl and her aunt proves stronger than ever when their loved one goes missing. Following her sister's disappearance, a Native American hustler kidnaps her niece from the child's white grandparents and sets out for the state powwow in hopes of keeping what is left of their family intact. Lily Gladstone Uncovers Injustice In Fancy Dance Trailer
Image
Just before Killers of the Flower Moon set her on the path towards an Oscar nomination / robbery, Lily Gladstone debuted another film concerning conflicts between Indigenous and white communities. Erica Tremblay’s 2023 Sundance premiere Fancy Dance is arriving some 18 months later from Apple, who stream it on June 28, and with this comes a trailer.

As John Fink said in his review, “Fancy Dance is a rich character study that explores the contemporary impact of permanently marginalizing a community with limited options. Other communities and economies emerge and potentially entrap someone like Roki who, as a teen, tries reconciling a sense of foundation while having little to grab onto. Above all, this is a well-written drama that feels like an authentic, at times painful exploration of a community from a filmmaker that knows this place all too well.”

Find the preview below, also featuring Shea Whigham and Isabel Deroy-Olson:

Lily Gladstone Sundance Drama ‘Fancy Dance’ Finally Has a Home at Apple
Image
For over a year, director Erica Tremblay’s acclaimed Sundance drama “Fancy Dance” went undistributed without a means to see it. Its star Lily Gladstone, Oscar-nominated for another Native American-led film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has taken time from her awards campaign to champion the film and urge anyone in Hollywood to support it and give it a home.

Today, that effort has finally paid off. Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to “Fancy Dance” and will release it both in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year. A release date was not specified, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Our film ‘Fancy Dance’ has found the perfect home with Apple, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful story of two Seneca-Cayuga women with a global audience.” Tremblay said in a statement. “As a Native American filmmaker, seeing my community included in the...

‘Fancy Dance’ Review: When a Cherokee Mother Goes Missing, Lily Gladstone Takes Charge
Image
In solid, Cherokee-centric drama “Fancy Dance” — a project supported by the Sundance Institute across multiple development labs — writer-director Erica Tremblay gives audiences a glimpse into Native culture, focusing on a family devastated by the indifference of the world beyond the reservation. Thirteen-year-old Roki’s mom has gone missing, and society has a funny way of showing its concern, to the extent that law enforcement seems more motivated to find a white fisherman’s stolen truck than to address the latest in an alarming number of disappearances.

That leaves any detective work up to Roki (promising newcomer Isabel Deroy-Olson) and her aunt Jax (Lily Gladstone) in a film that’s only nominally more interested in solving the case than the ambivalent authorities. Like recent Cannes Camera d’Or winner “War Pony” (which screens alongside “Fancy Dance” at this year’s SXSW film fest), Tremblay’s hardscrabble debut offers an unvarnished look at life on the rez,...

‘Fancy Dance’ Review: Lily Gladstone in Native American Filmmaker Erica Tremblay’s First-Rate Feature Debut
Image
Cloaking a family drama in crime-film conventions, the plot of Native American filmmaker Erica Tremblay’s exceptional directorial debut concerns a young woman’s disappearance from an Oklahoma reservation and her family’s urgent attempts to locate her. At the same time, Fancy Dance presents a broader narrative that emphasizes the connections that sustain families, communities and tribal nations, even when confronted with a legacy of disenfranchisement. Tremblay’s film validates the varied expressions of that experience with an affirming account of resilience and hope that sparkles with authentic performances, sensitive scripting and a genuine sense of place that resonate well after the final credits roll.

Fancy Dance finds its grounding in two standout turns from Lily Gladstone (Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon) and newcomer Isabel Deroy-Olson (Amazon Prime’s Three Pines) as two women struggling to hold out hope...

‘Sequence Break’ DVD Review
Stars: Chase Williamson, Lyle Kanouse, Fabianne Therese, Audrey Wasilewski, Johnny Dinan | Written and Directed by Graham Skipper

Note: With Sequence Break finally hitting DVD this week, here’s a reposting of our review of the film from its Fantasia screening last summer.

Oz (Williamson) is an antisocial loner who only finds solace in his love for ’80s arcade games, refurbishing and restoring them to their former glory. That is, until he meets Tess (Therese). The two quickly become romantically entwined, but their budding romance is slowly threatened by a mysterious game that seems to be drawing the two deeper and deeper into its void of slime and Cronenbergian horror. Amid the strange occurrences, a cryptic vagabond also appears, lurking around the arcade workshop at night. The dilapidated madman shouts about doom and destruction as the couple cling to the remnants of their normal lives. Oz soon finds himself facing off...

Sequence Break Melds Body and Bone with Circuits and Chips this May 24th on Shudder!
Graham Skipper's directorial debut is Sequence Break. A trailer for this sci-fi thriller was released late last year. In the film, a video arcade repairman, becomes trapped within one of the games he is working on. Sequence Break stars: Chase Williamson (The Guest), Fabianne Therese (Southbound), Lyle Kanouse, and Audrey Wasilewski. This title will debut exclusively on the horror subscription service Shudder, this May. A preview of the film's upcoming launch is hosted here. There are similarities between the promotional material of Sequence Break and David Cronenberg's Existenz (1999). Both films deal with video games and characters being pulled into the game's story. Reality is altered. And, both films involve characters having their bodies melded with a game. Biology and technology join together in Skipper's debut film! Sequence Break will show on Shudder, this May 24th. Horror fan can sign up for a Shudder subscription nearly pain free, at the link below.

Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash Gets Trailer And Release Date
With a hit CW series and a recent appearance in the Justice League‘s first silver screen outing now under his belt, one could say that everything’s coming up Flash. In fact, not only is the Flashpoint movie said to be still in some phase of production, but the Scarlet Speedster will soon headline an animated flick in the form of Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash.

Now, it should be noted that much like his aforementioned solo movie or the animated film that was based on the very same source material, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, the next direct-to-video Lego offering won’t afford Barry Allen the luxury of starring in a motion picture entirely free of his heroic cohorts. But the fact that Warner Bros. are allowing him to be the central focus is still nothing to shake Weather Wizard’s wand at.

When it comes to the plot itself,...

Comic-Con 2012 - Full Sunday Schedule is Live!
Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.

Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Hesher (2010)
Exclusive: Spencer Susser Talks Hesher
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Hesher (2010)
Writer-director Spencer Susser discusses his feature debut Hesher, assembling this terrific ensemble cast, securing Metallica's music, future projects, and more.

Like many filmmakers trying to break through in Hollywood, writer-director Spencer Susser began his career by making short films. Like many excellent filmmakers, those short films became long films, and Spencer Susser made his feature directorial debut with the fantastic indie Hesher, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on September 13. Hesher is still one of my favorite movies of the year thus far, centering around a grieving, broken family (Rainn Wilson, Devin Brochu, Piper Laurie) whose lives are given a bizarre jolt when a mysterious long-haired rocker named Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) makes his way into their lives... and their garage. I recently had the chance to speak with director Spencer Susser (who co-wrote the script with Animal Kingdom writer-director David Mich&#244d) over the phone to discuss his directorial debut.

Loud music. Pornography. Burning s*%t to the ground. These are a few of Hesher's favorite things. And they are what Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) brings into the lives of Tj (Devin Brochu) and his father Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he takes up residence in the garage uninvited. Grief stricken by the loss of Tj's mother in a car accident, Paul can't muster the strength to evict the strange squatter and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher's anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more.
