Former ‘Doctor Who’ Star, 43, Joins the BBC’s New Drama About a Soccer Legend
Image
The world loves a sports drama, and now one of the most controversial former Time Lords on Doctor Who is set to star in one. Jodie Whittaker, best known for playing the Thirteenth Doctor in the sci-fi series, is one of the more contentious leads in the show's modern history, thanks in no small part to a poor behind-the-scenes production helmed by Chris Chibnall. In fact, apart from Doctor Who, Whittaker's reputation as a top actress is impeccable, having dazzled in the likes of Toxic Town and Broadchurch.

Now, she is set to join the ensemble of the BBC's Dear England, an upcoming adaptation of the hugely successful stage production that dramatizes the journey of the England national men's football team under the tutelage of manager Gareth Southgate. Whittaker is confirmed via Radio Times to be starring as team psychologist Pippa Grange, alongside a cast already bursting at the seams with talent.

BBC Lines Up Star Squad for Dear England Drama
Jodie Whittaker
The BBC has confirmed that Jodie Whittaker and Jason Watkins will join Joseph Fiennes in Dear England, a four-part dramatization of James Graham’s hit play about Gareth Southgate’s cultural reboot of the national football team, now filming in Sussex and Kent for a 2026 premiere on BBC One and iPlayer.

Whittaker portrays sports psychologist Pippa Grange, while Watkins steps in as former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke; Daniel Ryan, Sam Spruell and John Hodgkinson round out Southgate’s back-room staff. A roster of young actors—led by Will Antenbring as Harry Kane and Edem-Ita Duke as Marcus Rashford—recreates the Euro-era squad, many reprising their stage roles.

Writer-executive producer Graham adapts his Olivier-winning script, with Rupert Goold sharing directing duties with Paul Whittington and Left Bank Pictures producing. Graham said the story’s themes of “redemption, resilience, kindness and compassion” are “kicking off a new journey on screen.

Super Stories

“Superman” star David Corenswet is trading his cape for a children’s book as he prepares to read a CBeebies Bedtime Story on July 11, the same day the film hits theaters. Corenswet will read Rachel Bright‘s “What Does Daddy Do?” a tale about young Daisy trying to figure out her father’s mysterious job. While her friends’ dads have clear professions – fireman, doctor – Daisy only knows her daddy climbs “mountains of paperwork,” has to “fly,” and reports to a dragon boss. Could he possibly be an “explorersuperknight?”

The bedtime story marks another star-studded addition to CBeebies’ roster, which has featured everyone from Olivia Colman and Tom Hardy to Harry Styles and the Spice Girls. The beloved children’s program, airing weekdays on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer, has been a family favorite since the channel’s 2002 launch.

‘Dragonfly’ Review: Andrea Riseborough and Brenda Blethyn Dazzle in a Bleak British Shocker
Image
It’s always risky to mix genres, but some movies pull off the trick with more skill than others. Dragonfly, which had its world premiere this week in Tribeca, starts as an intimate character drama, with two Oscar-nominated British actresses — Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough — at the top of their game. (They were given a joint acting award by one of the juries at the festival.) Paul Andrew Williams’ movie unfolds at a fairly leisurely but rewarding pace until an event occurs that unhinges one of the characters and turns the movie closer to the horror genre, with a blood-splattered finale. Reactions will surely be mixed about this surprise tonal shift, but there is no doubt that the film sticks in the memory.

Blethyn plays Elsie, an elderly woman living in a drab housing complex and tended to by caregivers who do the bare minimum to meet her needs. Her...

Tribeca Review: Dragonfly is a Haunting Mike Leigh-Inspired Thriller
Image
A challenging film to both review and market without spoiling, Paul Andrew Williams’ Dragonfly largely succeeds because it never quite telegraphs where it’s going until its third act. My thoughts are with the distributor that eventually picks up this film and has to decide what kind of trailer to cut for a work that largely spends its runtime as a straightforward social-realist story centered on the loneliness of neighbors. Those familiar with the output of writer-director Williams (including Bull and London to Brighton) will know better than to expect a traditional drama about working-class England in the vein of contemporary Mike Leigh and Ken Loach––even if Williams certainly can pull it off as well as those masters for his first half.

Of course, excellent casting helps, and Dragonfly works well because of the sympathetic performance of its leads, including the great Brenda Blethyn (perhaps best-known stateside for her...

Dragonfly Review: Two Stunning Performances in a Flawed Story
Image
In the quiet landscape of suburban Britain, where identical bungalows stand shoulder to shoulder, director Paul Andrew Williams’ Dragonfly opens not with a bang, but with a profound silence. We meet two women living lives that are mirror images of solitude.

In one home is Elsie (Brenda Blethyn), an elderly widow whose days are measured by the impersonal visits of agency nurses. She’s not a person; she’s a checklist of duties—bathed, fed, left alone. Her existence has become a sterile routine. Next door, separated by a single wall, lives Colleen (Andrea Riseborough), a much younger woman whose isolation is more feral.

Guarded and reclusive, her only real companion is Sabre, her enormous bull terrier. She is a ghost in her own life, a fringe dweller in a world that has largely forgotten her. The film lets us sit in their loneliness until a simple offer to fetch...

‘Dragonfly’ Review: Andrea Riseborough And Brenda Blethyn Give Wings To Paul Andrew Williams’ Poignant Neighborhood Drama – Tribeca Film Festival
Image
Paul Andrew Williams’s feature debut was called London to Brighton (2006), but the British director has never been much interested in capital cities. His latest, Dragonfly, is another example of this, being a dark, low-key drama about the ways in which the unnoticed lives of suburban people can make surprising headlines. In a direct way, it’s a sister piece to his provocative 2010 home invasion film Cherry Tree Lane, in which—pre-empting Adolescence—a middle-class couple’s humdrum live is turned upside down when they are inexplicably attacked by violent teenage rebels without any apparent cause.

In reality, though—and despite the blood spilt both onscreen and off—it turns out to be more like the film Williams made in 2012. Called Song for Marion, it starred Terence Stamp as an emotionally shut-down widower who joins a choir to pay homage to his late wife (Vanessa Redgrave). It wasn’t a commercial success,...

Brenda Blethyn at an event for Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Dragonfly review – haunting, genre-defying drama of lonely city living
Brenda Blethyn at an event for Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Tribeca film festival, New York

Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough, along with a very alarming dog, are superb as two neighbours thrown together by their neglected circumstances

Twenty years ago, Paul Andrew Williams announced himself as a smart new British talent with his ferocious gangland picture London to Brighton, and his creativity has continued in film and TV ever since. His new film is a haunted, social-realist drama with elements of Mike Leigh but also moments of thriller and even horror. Williams isn’t shy of stabbing us with an old-fashioned jump scare towards the end, which in fact challenges the audiences with its refusal of categorisation. There are two superb lead performances from Andrea Riseborough and Brenda Blethyn and an outstanding supporting turn from Jason Watkins.

Dragonfly is about loneliness and alienation and about the eternal mystery of other people, the fear of intimacy and the unknowable existence of urban neighbours.

One To Watch: Antonia Desplat On Her Memorable Experience On ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Set: “It Never Gets Normal Because Wes Is A Genius”
Image
Over coffee in Soho, Antonia Desplat is describing her journey to Wes Anderson’s set for The Phoenician Scheme — the espionage drama that marks his fourth picture to compete for the Palme d’Or.

Desplat was working on French TV drama Made in France when the email arrived: “Wes wants to know if you want to come to Potsdam next week to play one of Benicio del Toro’s dead wives.”

One year before being beckoned to Germany by Anderson, Desplat had played the female lead in Johnny Depp’s Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, opening in June, which chronicles Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s rampage through pre-World War I Paris. Desplat plays Modigliani’s lover, the formidable writer and poet Beatrice Hastings.

In response to that email request, Desplat says, “I literally just jumped on a plane, went to Potsdam, then next to Berlin, and had...

The Game Ending Explained & Series Recap: Did Huw Catch The Ripton Stalker?
Image
British crime thriller miniseries The Game, also titled Catch You Later, is an exciting, engaging four-episode narrative highlighting the cat-and-mouse chase between retired police officer Huw Miller and a notorious serial killer named Ripton Stalker. While the story itself doesn’t break new ground, the ingenuity of the narrative treatment—the way it treats the psychological connection between the killer and the investigator in question, the predator/prey connection between the killer and the victims, and the toll exacted by the so-called chase—is really amazing, to say the least. With some solid performances by the lead trio, Jason Watkins, Sunetra Sarkar, and Robson Green, The Game manages to hold the suspense and tension till the very end, which is not what I can say about a lot of small-screen thrillers these days. The ending might come off as a bit shaky and anticlimactic, but viewers will not mind that...

After Joining the ‘Harry Potter’ Series, Paapa Essiedu Signs Up for ‘Adolescence’ Writer’s Next Project
Image
Like London buses, it seems as if two castings have come at once for Paapa Essiedu after months of fans waiting for news. Ten days on from the exciting, albeit expected, confirmation that the actor would be starring as Professor Snape in the new HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter TV series, Essidou is back in the headlines for a new casting announcement, this time teaming up with Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes to star in a brand-new drama for Channel 4, Falling. Speaking of his casting, as cited via Variety, Essidou said, "Falling is a story that has Jack Thorne’s singular talent of mining the sublime out of the ordinary running all the way through. I can’t wait to work with Keeley, Peter and the rest of the team to bring this world to life."

Before he takes on the iconic role of Snape and attempts to fill the shoes of the late,...

Paapa Essiedu, Keeley Hawes to Lead Channel 4 Drama ‘Falling’ from ‘Adolescence’ Writer Jack Thorne
Image
Paapa Essiedu may soon be set to don the dark robes of Severus Snape in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series, but the British actor will first be getting into the black cloth of the clergy.

The “I May Destroy You” and “Black Mirror” star will play a Catholic priest alongside Keeley Hawes as a devoted nun in the Channel 4 drama “Falling,” which marks the first ever love story from BAFTA-winning “Adolescence” writer Jack Thorne. The Forge Entertainment, a Banijay U.K. company, produces.

In “Falling,” Essiedu’s priest and Hawes’ nun are both deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community. Neither are expected to fall in love. But when they do, both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God. The drama is described as a “witty, moving, contemporary romantic drama that is as honest...

Breaking Baz: Cate Blanchett, Tom Burke And Emma Corrin Hoping To Land Their Soaring ‘Seagull’ In New York
Image
Exclusive: The London Barbican Theatre’s scintillating production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, boasting an all-star ensemble led by Cate Blanchett, Tom Burke and Emma Corrin and directed by the estimable Berlin-based Thomas Ostermeier, is setting course for New York in 2026, multiple sources inform me.

The play, adapted by Duncan Macmillan and Ostermeier, is propelled by blasts of oomph. It feels so marvelously fresh that it could have been written today. Indeed, Macmillan and Ostermeier keep on eye on current events and amend their script as and when significant news emerges.

Like, on Thursday night, Jason Watkin’s Sorin made a point about the “f*cking high tariffs” he has to pay on his country estate’s farm produce, a clear reference to the tariffs introduced Wednesday by the Trump administration.

Channel 5 is joining The Forsytes.

The Paramount network has taken UK rights on PBS Masterpiece’s splashy adaptation of John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga, which stars Doctor Who’s Millie Gibson and Francesca Annis as formidable matriarch Ann.

True Blood star Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast) also features alongside the likes of Jack Davenport (The Morning Show) and Gibson.

This is the third Forsyte Saga adaptation. A version aired in 1967 on the BBC and 35 years later on ITV. ‘The Seagull’ Theater Review: Cate Blanchett Leads a First-Class Ensemble in Glorious Chekhov Adaptation
Image
While Anton Chekhov always thought of The Seagull as a comedy, that fact has frequently been forgotten through productions that fall into the soporific trap set by angsty, moping, lovelorn characters losing their hearts and minds in the Russian countryside.

There’s no such danger with Thomas Ostermeier, who once declared that he wanted to bring “some rock ‘n’ roll” to Ibsen (his Enemy of the People had the protagonist play Bowie covers in a band and open a political discussion with the audience). The firebrand German director now blasts the cobwebs off Chekhov with boisterous, dazzling delight.

But as irreverent as Ostermeier may seem — as self-referential, ironic, meta, playful — he’s true to his material. The reality of The Seagull is that it treads that fine line between comedy and tragedy. And while this production is an incredible blast, teetering on farce, Ostermeier and co-adaptor Duncan Macmillan (People, Places...

Jason Watkins & Robson Green On Their Cat-And-Mouse Thriller Series ‘Catch You Later’

Exclusive: “The cat and mouse dynamic is really good,” says Jason Watkins. “It’s a game where these two men are almost stalking each other,” adds Robson Green.

When Patrick Harbottle (Green) moves into a home on his street recently left empty when the occupier suddenly dies, Miller becomes convinced his new neighbor is the killer, thanks to three little words.

“The way Patrick says, ‘catch you later’ triggers something within Huw, who thinks he has his man,” says Green, star of shows such as Grantchester and Strike Back. “Patrick is over-friendly, and Huw feels everything is not quite what it seems.

In “The Catch,” Ed Collier, portrayed by Jason Watkins, emerges as a fisherman wrestling with his son Josh’s tragic death. This loss colors his perception of the world, especially regarding his daughter Abbie’s new boyfriend, Ryan. The story unfolds with Ed’s growing unease, fueled by an intense desire to shield Abbie from potential dangers. The narrative explores emotional dynamics within family relationships, revealing the hidden struggles fathers experience. This portrayal challenges traditional depictions of masculinity, presenting a father consumed by fear and grief.

Newly-Minted Sphere Abacus Set For MIPCOM Debut With David Suchet Heading To Cannes And A Slate That Includes Gunpowder Plot Drama
Image
Exclusive: Sphere Abacus heads into its first MIPCOM next week with some splashy titles as it attempts to make waves in a crowded market.

The newly-minted outfit was created this summer when Canada’s Sphere Media completed a C$24.6M ($18.2M) deal for UK-based Abacus Media Rights, the UK-based distributor that sells Leaving Neverland and Scrublands. Ahead of jetting into Cannes – with iconic Poirot actor David Suchet joining the party – Managing Director Jonathan Ford and Sphere Media CEO Bruno Dubé spoke to Deadline.

Abacus was only formed in 2020, but Ford saw an opportunity to put the foot on the accelerator with the Sphere deal when the opportunity arose. “We’re the eighth biggest UK distributor, but there’s a big gap between us and the seventh,” he says. “We didn’t own production businesses, we didn’t own IP and to help close that gap, the most appropriate step was...

'Batman Caped Crusader' Gives Us a Shockingly Different Version of Batman
Image
One of the more shocking elements of the new Batman animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader, is the relationship between Bruce Wayne/Batman (Hamish Linklater) and his trusted butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Jason Watkins). Caped Crusader is a brand-new reimagining of the Batman mythos. The show features a look and setting reminiscent of the classic Golden Age Batman comics, and many characters have been completely revamped for the animated series. It also takes a different approach to the long-running, well-known relationship between Batman and Alfred. It's quite surprising how coldly and harshly Batman treats Alfred throughout the series, but the show provides reasoning for Bruce's dismissive and mean behavior toward his trusted butler and confidante.

Bruce Timm returns to the world of the Dark Knight with Batman: Caped Crusader, a new animated series that premiered at the start of August. The new Batman show follows a young Bruce Wayne during his early days fighting criminals in Gotham City. It takes a grounded approach as it settles into the time period, showcasing Batman taking on a range of classy criminals, but also classic supervillain types.

What to watch this weekend August 2, 2024: TV awards contenders
Image
Time is flying faster than Rhaenys fell to her death this season on “House of the Dragon,” which is to say, wow, somehow the Season 2 finale of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off is already upon us.

Despite multiple clips leaking on social media earlier this week after what HBO referred to as an “unintentional release from an international third-party distributor,” the finale (airing Sunday at 9/8 on HBO and Max) is still the most anticipated watch of the weekend that isn’t related to the Summer Olympics. In the penultimate episode, Emma D’Arcy’s Queen Rhaenyra was last seen gathering an unconventional group of dragonriders — including a blacksmith and a drunk — to set the stage for the finale’s major conflict with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who fled to King’s Landing when he saw Rhaenyra’s growing forces. If you’ve read the source material, you likely know how this will end.

Bruce Timm turned down the chance to make more episodes of Batman: The Animated Series
Image
Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm has returned to the world of the Dark Knight with Batman: Caped Crusader on Prime Video, but he once had the opportunity to do a proper revival of The Animated Series. If you’re wondering why that didn’t happen, it’s because he turned it down.

While speaking with The Wrap, Timm said that Warner Bros. approached him four or five years ago with the idea of bringing back Batman: The Animated Series. At the time, the studio was about to launch its own streaming service and clearly saw the draw of new episodes. “They said, ‘Hey, how would you feel about going back and making some more ‘B:tas’ episodes?’ And I’m like, ‘Nah, we’d been there, we’d done that.’ I wasn’t interested in just revisiting that world,” Timm explained.

Timm did consider developing a Justice League animated...

Batman: Caped Crusader Succeeds Where Batman: The Animated Series Failed
Image
This Batman: Caped Crusader article contains spoilers.

“Oof,” says a purple-clad woman with a tantalizing slit running up the side of her dress. “You’re definitely a lot sexier than in those sketches,” she tells a stoic Batman.

Modern viewers may not recognize the green and purple get-up, but between the pointy ears on her head and her flirty attitude toward Batman, anyone can identify the burglar as Catwoman, chief villain of the Batman: Caped Crusader episode “Kiss of the Catwoman.”

A new animated version of the baddie/love interest will of course invite comparisons to the Batman: The Animated Series version and for good season. That ’90s animated series gave some of the Dark Knight’s villains their definitive stories. The Clock King was never scarier than he was in the episode bearing his name and “Heart of Ice” made Mr. Freeze into a tragic figure. Even when it...
