Sandra Bullock Reveals the Most Gruelling Part of ‘Gravity’ That Will Make Scarlett Johansson Feel Better: ‘It was so angering’
Image
Sandra Bullock received her second Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role as Dr. Ryan Stone in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. The sci-fi survival thriller swept the Oscars with wins for direction, cinematography, editing, sound, and VFX. The film also earned $723 million at the box office.

Bullock and George Clooney reportedly spent ten hours every day attached to a robotic arm alone inside a lightbox for the production of the film. While Clooney was only on set for three weeks, Bullock was there for much longer and got frustrated due to the lonely shooting style and precise movements for VFX.

James Cameron & David Fincher Almost Stopped the Oscar-Winning Film Gravity From Happening
Image
A groundbreaking sci-fi drama that pushed the industry's boundaries in 2013 was almost stopped by Hollywood giants David Fincher and James Cameron. At least, that's what would have happened if the director behind the movie in question, Gravity, had followed their advice when he told them the idea for the then "impossible-to-make" film. Coming courtesy of Deadline, Alfonso Cuarn took the opportunity to speak about the early days of Gravity's conception when he took the stage during a masterclass at Locarno Film Festival. When he discussed some of his widely known projects, Cuarn addressed how Fincher and Cameron were hesitant to believe he could pull off such an ambitious science fiction film.

Cuarn revealed how, following Children of Men flopping commercially, he knew he needed to write something but no arty sh*t. The filmmaker needed something that would let a studio give me a cheque," and came up with...

Watch: Ultra-Realistic Sci-Fi Short 'Flite' Created Using Unreal Engine
Image
"Do it again. This time so it doesn't suck." A remarkable proof-of-concept short film to show the incredible potential of the Unreal Engine. Of course this isn't the first animated short film to do this, but this one does stand out. Flite is a sci-fi hyper-realistic 3D animated short film created by VFX artist Tim Webber, who also happens to be Cco of the VFX studio known as Framestore in the UK. They've been hyping this up all year and it's finally online to watch. "Using state-of-the-art virtual production techniques comes one of the most technically impressive sci-fi shorts." Set in London 2053, a world champion hoverboarder finds herself imprisoned in a skyscraper by her obsessive manager. She engineers an ingenious high-rise escape but soon finds herself riding for her life. The film features Alba Baptista as Stevie, with Gethin Anthony, Daniel Lawrence Taylor, and Hayley Carmichael. This comes from an...

Generative AI is neither as “scary” nor “amazing” as first thought, says Framestore exec

Time Webber was sitting on a London Film Festival industry panel about generative AI

Tim Webber, chief executive officer of UK-based animation and visual effects company Framestore, says he believes generative artificial intelligence (AI) is not as impactful as initially thought.

“It is neither quite as revelatory and amazing as we all thought it might be in the early days, nor is it quite as scary and threatening as we all thought it might be in the early days,” Webber said to a packed out room at Picturehouse Central where he was participating on a BFI London Film Festival industry...

Technologies Like AI & Unreal Engine Are A Having Big Impact On The Entertainment Business, But Where Will It Go From Here?
Image
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “Change is the only constant in life.” The entertainment sector is no exception to this adage. It’s an industry that has long benefited from advancements in technology that have increasingly enriched the quality of films and programs and have also condensed the filmmaking process across the entire pipeline from pre-production to distribution and exhibition.

But while it’s easy to look back and see how digital tech has improved the sector, assessing the future of the business as it stands on the threshold of two hot button topics — Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine — is much less clear.

AI has been increasingly polarizing, with Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak among more than 1,100 signatories of an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on the development of advanced AI systems, citing “risks to society”. Meanwhile,...

First Look at ‘Gravity’ VFX Supervisor’s Virtual Production ‘Flite’
Image
Tim Webber, the Oscar-winning VFX supervisor of Alfonso Cuaron’s 2013 space-set thriller Gravity, has unwrapped the trailer for his directional debut — an experimental sci-fi short titled Flite that the inventive filmmaker created while putting a new VFX and virtual production pipeline through its paces.

London-headquartered VFX facility Framestore (for which Webber serves as Cco) was the lead VFX vendor on Gravity, which made early use of techniques now considered a part of what is known as virtual production, which the VFX community is now quickly working to develop and adopt for all types of production. For Flite, Webber made use of Framestore’s latest iteration of its system, custom built around Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. “A lot of the things we did in [Flite] are taking what we did in Gravity and moving them on with modern technology and making them easier to do and more sophisticated,” Webber tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The Academy Invites 271 New Members for 2014
The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Gravity (2013)
Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o among 271 Academy invitees
Gravity (2013)
Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Gravity (2013)
Josh Hutcherson, Lupita Nyong'o, Pharrell and 268 others invited to join the Academy
Gravity (2013)
Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Watch: Deconstruct Alfonso Cuarón's 'Gravity' With The Film's VFX Team & More
At this point, you’ve either seen “Gravity” already or you’re just plain not interested. The movie made $716 million worldwide and it won seven Academy Awards just over two months ago. Director Alfonso Cuarón talked about the making of the movie on so many different occasions now that the film’s production history is probably common knowledge for those who consider themselves to be big fans of the film. But if there’s one group who can’t seem to stop talking about “Gravity,” it’s the Academy. They held an event at the DGA Theater this past week called “Deconstructing Gravity” where they conducted a Q&A with editor Mark Sanger, animation supervisor Max Solomon, and visual effects supervisor Tim Webber. Also present for the event was astronaut Cady Coleman who gave a speech commending the makers behind “Gravity” for their exceptional work. During the Q&A part of the event,...

How'd They Do That? 10 Secrets of 'Gravity' Exposed at AMPAS Event Honoring the Film's Tech Wizards
Gravity (2013)
Even if you think you know how the Oscar-winning space odyssey "Gravity" was made, you don't. That is, unless you're Alfonso Cuaron or another member of the cast and crew. There aren't enough special features, docs, interviews, or behind the scenes information available for anyone outside the creators to fully grasp the monumental efforts that went into making last year's critical and commercial smash appear as simple as it did.  Seven Oscars really weren't enough for "Gravity."  The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences held a special event Monday night in Hollywood to honor the film's stunning technical achievements with editor Mark Sanger, visual effects supervisor Tim Webber -- both of whom won Oscars in February -- and animation supervisor Max Solomon. Hosted by Academy Governor Bill Kroyer, "Deconstructing Gravity" took an in-depth look at the production methods employed to make the space odyssey come to life. Here are the highlights of the incredibly.

Made in Britain: Framestore's Oscar-winning Gravity VFX team
Gravity (2013)
Amid Gravity's incredible awards season run - which culminated this Sunday with 7 Oscar wins at the Academy Awards - director Alfonso Cuarón weighed into the debate surrounding the film's status as a British film.

"You cannot tell from my accent, but I consider myself part of the British film industry," he said as he collected his BAFTA for Best Director earlier this year. "I have lived in London for 13 years and done almost half of my movies here. I make a very good case for curbing immigration."

Just an hour previously, Gravity triumphed in the Best British Film category igniting a mini-social media storm questioning its national identity.

Cuarón's film may not be a kitchen sink drama about working class grind, but look past the Hollywood stars and Warner Bros backing and there's no question that this is a film that - like the Harry Potter series before it...

Tech Support: 'Gravity,' 'Gatsby,' 'Dallas' and 'Frozen' ruled Oscar's craft categories
Gravity (2013)
The morning after the Oscars is always a strange feeling. We've been covering this process in earnest for months, and now it's over. And for the first time ever, I'm pleased to say that I scored a perfect 10 in predicting the winners in the crafts categories! (I went 21/24 overall, missing Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and…Best Picture.) To be fair, however, I'm hardly the only person to have gone 10/10 in this respect. In that sense, we had a night without surprises, which is not to say we didn't have stories. The big story in the crafts categories is, of course, "Gravity's" dominance, as it won six of the 10 below-the-line fields, with the obvious (and highly deserved) win in Best Visual Effects being a foreshadowing of things to come in Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. Visual effects supervisor Tim Webber,...

List of 2014 Oscar Winners!
The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

The Gravity graduates: experience that's out of this world
The film Gravity has taken home seven Oscars, and kickstarted the careers of many graduates

At this year's Oscars there was one standout winner. Gravity, the space thriller starring Sandra Bullock, won seven Oscars.

But while everyone knows the name of director Alfonso Cuarón, who won best director, graduates from two Bournemouth universities worked behind the scenes and have reason to celebrate too.

One of the wins for Gravity was for best visual effects, the spectacular highlight of the film. Years of work to get went into that Oscar victory, and recent graduates played a key part in the process.

"Around 40-50 Bournemouth University graduates worked on the film," says Adam Redford, a lecturer at the university's National Centre for Computer Animation. Redford worked on the film too, as a texture artist ("that means painting the surface detail on the models for all the 3D computer-generated parts of the film...

Oscars 2014: Top 5 Acceptance Speeches from Lupita Nyong'o to Jared Leto
While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. The only truly strange thing about these speeches is John Ridley and Steve McQueen failing...

Oscars 2014: Ranking the acceptance speeches! -- Video
Gravity (2013)
The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:

1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor

Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. News Simon Brew 3 Mar 2014 - 05:51

12 Years A Slave, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, Frozen and more take home the Oscars. Here's the full list of winners...

Overnight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - AMPAS to its mates - handed out its annual clutch of Oscars. And as it turned out, the event went by the form book, with just one or two little surprises along the way.

The big prizes were split between 12 Years A Slave, Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club, with the former taking Best Picture, but Alfonso Cuaron picking up a gong for his directorial work on Gravity. Dallas Buyers Club picked up the two acting awards - for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto - that it was broadly expected to. There were two gongs for Disney's Frozen too, in the week that it passed $1bn at the global box office.

Of the surprises? Lupita Nyong'o...

Gravity Wins 7 Academy Awards; 12 Years A Slave Takes Best Picture – 86th Oscars
After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.

Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. It’s counterintuitive to the way we’re making films today. It’s a real achievement by Mr. McQueen here. I love this movie. I think it’s important. I think it’s important because it deals with our history that we haven...

Transcripts of all Academy Awards winners’ onstage speeches…

Performance by an actress in a supporting role

Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave

Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. Oscars 2014 Winners: Lupita Nyong'o Wins Best Supporting Actress, '12 Years A Slave' Wins Best Picture - Full List
12 Years A Slave took home Best Picture, but it was Gravity that won the most golden statues with seven Oscar wins at the 86th Academy Awards.

Host Ellen DeGeneres had fun with the star-studded audience, ordering pizza and making Brad Pitt give out paper plates to lucky ladies such as Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who were all very hungry. DeGeneres also made fun of Jennifer Lawrence’s great fall at last year’s Oscars in her opening monologue and likening the entire awards show to The Hunger Games.

The awards went off swiftly, and not without a hitch or two, but technical difficulties aside, DeGeneres delivered a sweet, funny and uncontroversial show. Her best host moment came when she took a selfie mid-show with Streep that turned into a selfie with anyone in the first three rows who was quick enough to run and beat each other into the frame.

Oscars 2014: Alfonso Cuarón wins Best Director for Gravity
Alfonso Cuarón at an event for Rudo y Cursi (2008)
Alfonso Cuarón has won the Best Director Academy Award for Gravity.

The Mexican-director, who was first nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for Y tu mamá también, continued his awards season success by adding an Academy Award to his Golden Globe and BAFTA.

Cuarón beat David O Russell (American Hustle), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) to take home the prize.

The filmmaker admitted that making the big budget space blockbuster was a "transformative" experience.

"For most people, that transformation was wisdom; for me, it was the colour of my hair," he joked. "I want to thank the people who made that happen.

"My son Jonás Cuarón, Sandy - you are the soul and heart of the film, an amazing collaborator and one of the best people I ever met; George Clooney for your trust; Tim Webber, Steven Price."

The movie, which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, narrates the story of three members of a shuttle crew, who while working outside the craft to repair the Hubble telescope, have a catastrophic encounter with a field of space debris.

The movie was in contention for the Oscar with "The Hobbit:.

Deadline’s Oscars Blog: ‘12 Years A Slave’, ‘Gravity’ And Boredom Reign Supreme
Gravity (2013)
Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.
