All 3 Times John Wayne Was Nominated For An Oscar (& Who He Lost To)
Image
John Wayne was nominated for an Oscar three times across his 50-year career, but he only walked home with one. Wayne starred in around 80 Westerns, so his defining image in pop culture is as a macho, no-nonsense cowboy. This gives a limited view of his range because while he often played variations on the same character, he delivered some layered performances too. The Searchers is Wayne's best and darkest work, while he's genuinely charming in the romantic drama The Quiet Man. Still, Wayne rarely got much respect from the Academy Awards.

Many of the John Wayne/John Ford movie collaborations received great reviews, but somehow, none of the star's Oscar nods came from those films. Wayne also picked up several awards on behalf of other performers, including Gary Cooper for High Noon; this is a little bizarre in hindsight, as Wayne deeply hated High Noon and its moral message. Cutting Just One Scene Turned Star Trek's Court Martial Into A Confusing Mess
Image
In the "Star Trek" episode "Court Martial", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is brought on trial following the death of one of his officers, Lieutenant Commander Finney (Richard Webb). The U.S.S. Enterprise had encountered an ion storm and was being buffetted so badly it faced potential destruction. To flee the damage, Kirk had to eject a research vessel while Finney was still on board, sending his officer to his death.

This was a difficult command decision, of course, but there was some debate as to whether or not Kirk ejected the vessel while the Enterprise was at red alert, or if Kirk panicked and ejected the vessel while the Enterprise was still at yellow alert. The latter would be seen as grounds for incompetence and Kirk would be ejected from Starfleet. There is a computer record of Kirk's reaction, including a video, showing he did indeed act hastily, but...

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Can Set Up Kirk's Star Trek: Tos Court Martial
Image
Lt. Kirk's rise to Commander in Snw could spark resentment among fellow officers like Lt. Sam Kirk and Benjamin Finney. Snw has the chance to explore Finney's grudge against Kirk, setting up his role in Kirk's future court-martial in Tos. Finney's revenge plot against Kirk due to a past incident could play out in Snw season 3, impacting Kirk's career.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 has an opportunity to set up the court-martial of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series. Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is just about to become Commander aboard the USS Farragut, as part of his meteoric rise to the USS Enterprise's center seat. While Kirk's ambition and determination may impress his superiors, it does also create some resentment among his fellow officers. Even Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) clearly harbored some resentment toward his brother's rise, rooted in his...

Every Time Kirk Was Court-Martialed In Star Trek (& Why)
Image
Starfleet is a peacekeeping organization dedicated to maintaining peace and order in space, but its officers sometimes face court-martial when conflicting moralities arise. Captain James T. Kirk, despite his commitment to Starfleet, has faced court-martial multiple times due to moral conflicts and greater loyalties. Kirk's court-martials included charges of culpable negligence, perjury, murder, conspiracy, assault, theft, sabotage, and disobeying orders, but he ultimately clears his name and remains dedicated to preserving peace and serving Starfleet.

Captain James T. Kirk is known for taking risks in Star Trek, but his circumvention of Starfleet regulations has occasionally resulted in Kirk facing a court-martial. Described in Star Trek (2009) as "a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada," a force for good, Starfleet Officers are held to a high standard of duty and honor while maintaining a hierarchical authority. With multiple instances of Starfleet Officers - and even Captains - facing court-martial throughout Star Trek’s half-century history,...

Star Trek's Best Courtroom Episodes Ranked
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 2, "Ad Astra per Aspera"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra per Aspera" joins the ranks of Star Trek's best courtroom dramas. There's a long tradition of the Starfleet courtroom drama that runs from Star Trek: The Original Series to Star Trek: Enterprise. Strange New Worlds resurrects the tradition for a stirring episode that puts Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) on trial for withholding information about her Illyrian heritage. It's also a powerful civil rights allegory, as Una's trial forces Starfleet to confront the lack of cultural nuance in the Federation's ban on genetic enhancements.

"Ad Astra per Aspera" is a courtroom drama in the vein of Star Trek: The Next Generation's undisputed classic of the form "The Measure of a Man", in which the sentience of Lt. Cmdr. Data (Brent Spiner) is called into question.

Kirk & Spock Are Also Court-Martialed After Star Trek Strange New Worlds’ Number One
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Number One (Rebecca Romijn) begins season 2 facing a court-martial, something both Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) faced in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1. As the two most famous Star Trek characters, Kirk and Spock have gone up against their fair share of difficulties. While they saved the galaxy multiple times over the course of Tos, they were not always in Starfleet's good graces. Spock would face a court-martial in Tos' two-part episode "The Menagerie," while Kirk would face one a few episodes later in "Court Martial."

Despite his reputation to the contrary, Captain Kirk mostly did what Starfleet asked him to do during Star Trek: The Original Series run. Spock, too, generally followed the rules. And yet, both characters face court-martials during their time serving on the USS Enterprise. In "The Menagerie," Spock does commit a court-martial offense, but...

Every Commodore In Star Trek
Image
Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is the latest Star Trek character to be promoted to the role of Commodore, following in the footsteps of many Starfleet officers. The Commodore rank is one of many Naval terms adopted by Starfleet over the years, and Geordi is the first regular Trek character to be given the rank. A Commodore is placed between Captain and Rear Admiral in both the real-life Navy, and the fictional Starfleet, and is the most junior of the flag officer ranks.

In Naval terms, a Commodore is the officer in charge of more than one ship. As the officer in charge of the Athan Prime Fleet Museum, Geordi earned his Commodore rank because he's in charge of the various legendary starships housed in the museum's collection. While the Commodore rank is relatively rare in both the modern Navy, and the history of Starfleet, Geordi isn't the only character to hold the rank.

All Jason Bourne Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
There have been five entries in the Jason Bourne franchise but which are the best Bourne movies of all? Adapted from the novels written by the late Robert Ludlum (and continued by Eric Van Lustbader), Jason Bourne is a deadly CIA assassin suffering from amnesia. Portrayed by Matt Damon in four feature films, Jason Bourne essentially gave audiences an American equivalent to James Bond and helped redefine action movies in the 21st century.

Director Doug Liman was tapped to helm the 2002 feature film adaptation of The Bourne Identity, with Damon as an unlikely choice to play the titular assassin. The movie's surprise success launched the franchise that saw Paul Greengrass take over for the next three movies with Damon starring while there was also a spinoff movie starring Jeremy Renner. Through its grounded take on the spy movie genre to its visceral action to the compelling new action hero the series introduces,...

Jason Bourne's Origin Story Explained
Image
The Jason Bourne movies only reveal Jason Bourne’s origin story in small details throughout the franchise, making this mysterious backstory tough to track down. The Jason Bourne series begins with 2002's The Bourne Identity, wherein Matt Damon plays the amnesiac spy Jason Bourne. At the beginning of the franchise, Bourne has no idea who he is or what happened to him in the past and his attempts to uncover the truth—and evade the CIA—make up the bulk of the action in The Bourne Identity and its sequels. By the third movie in the series, Bourne is finally starting to piece together his story, but viewers may need a refresher on the plot.

Jason Bourne’s backstory is revealed in full in Damon’s least favorite sequel, The Bourne Ultimatum. Even though the actor wasn’t a fan of this franchise outing, most critics and viewers agreed that...

10 Unexpected Plot Twists That Redditors Think Made A Movie Worse
Image
With the release of Black Adam, fans have a great new movie in the Dcu to enjoy. Fans unfamiliar with the comic character were shocked by the plot twist towards the end of the movie regarding Black Adam and his past.

Plot twists are an important staple to movies, changing up what audiences know and hitting them with a surprise twist that no one saw coming. Generally speaking, plot twists tend to make a movie better. However, sometimes a plot twist just falls short of success and tends to make movies worse, and Redditors are more than happy to share their own personal worse plot twists.

The Superhero Killing Organization Glass

For many viewers, Glass was an underwhelming conclusion to the Unbreakable trilogy, partly due to the third act of the film and the plot twist it contained.

Kino Noir Times Four
Image
Let’s shout our approval of this foursome of vintage noirs, all of which have been scarce since Eddie Muller was old enough to rob candy stores. Three Paramounts and one Universal give us four notable directors and a gallery of attractive stars, including a swoon-worthy array of actresses: Marta Toren, Loretta Young, Susan Hayward, Gail Russell, Frances Farmer and Marina Berti. The selection includes one of the key ‘just prior to the official style’ titles, a thriller with supernatural overtones, a ‘woman in jeopardy’ story and a gangster tale reportedly inspired by Lucky Luciano.

O.S.S.
Image
Hollywood acknowledges the existence of America’s proto- C.I.A. intelligence agency with this espionage tale of Yanks working with the resistance in occupied France. It’s basic cloak ‘n’ dagger action, with intrepid Alan Ladd and the daring Geraldine Fitzgerald risking life and limb to plant plastic explosive bombs. The details are fairly interesting: Ladd outwits the Gestapo by working with a turncoat inside their ranks. The outcome is grimly realistic, even if that old Paramount glamour is part of the package. The writer-producer is Richard Maibaum, who would later write almost thirty years’ worth of franchise James Bond 007 adventures.

Skies Brightening? WME Names 25 New Agency Partners As Agency Restores Pay Cuts On January 1
Image
Exclusive: At today’s year-end virtual meeting, WME minted its largest partner class ever.

The agency named 25 new partners, spanning a variety of WME departments and offices. WME also announced internally that compensation is being fully restored, across the entirety of Endeavor, starting January 1. Pay reductions came into play in April, after the Covid pandemic shut down theaters, film and TV production and live events, placing financial strain on every agency’s cash flow.

The agency confirmed the news to Deadline.

“We are proud to recognize our new partners who come from many different groups throughout WME but each share the same common threads: They are passionate advocates for artists, take an entrepreneurial approach to their business and have distinguished themselves as leaders both within and outside the agency,” said Lloyd Braun, Endeavor Client Group President and Chairman of WME. “As our industry undergoes unprecedented changes, the different perspectives of...

The project is the first series from its stars’ Sony-backed production company, Stolen Picture.

They stake out haunted churches, underground bunkers, and abandoned hospitals using an array of homemade ghost-detecting gizmos and share their adventures on an online channel. The more de Havilland pictures we see, the more we admire her taste and judgment in roles… or is that better expressed as, the more we admire her ability to guide a near-perfect career, going so far as to defy the studios in court. This 1941 drama has director Mitchell Leisen in fine form, a smart script by Brackett & Wilder, and a central topic that’s currently quite hot: illegal immigration.

Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
Jason Bourne Review: Matt Damon Packs a Timely Punch
Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
The original Bourne trilogy movies (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum) are quite noteworthy for a number of different reasons. First and foremost, it solidified Matt Damon as a bona fide movie star, who could open a big budget film on his own, while showcasing the action movie chops no one knew he had. It's also one of the rare movie trilogies to show big improvement each time out at the domestic box office, with The Bourne Identity earning $121.6 million, followed by The Bourne Supremacy's $176.2 million and The Bourne Ultimatum's $227 million. Despite all of this success, it took nine years for Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass to finally bring this action icon back to the big screen with Jason Bourne, and, thankfully, it was well worth the wait.

No matter how successful the previous entry was, a lengthy wait between movies doesn't often bode well for some franchises.

First Jason Bourne Clips Introduce Alicia Vikander as Heather Lee
Matt Damon
One of this summer's biggest sequels is the highly-anticipated Jason Bourne, which brings star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass back together after a nine-year hiatus. With just a few weeks left until this action sequel hits theaters, three new clips have surfaced, the first of which gives us a new look at Alicia Vikander's character, CIA agent Heather Lee. This scene features Heather talking to Matt Damon's title character over the phone, while watching him through a live video feed.

This clip, courtesy of Universal Pictures, also features Tommy Lee Jones as Robert Dewey, the CIA director who tries to talk Jason Bourne into stopping his quest for the truth and come in. Dewey also makes mention of Jason Bourne's father who he calls a true patriot. While there is little we know about Jason Bourne's (i.e. David Webb) parents up until now, it's clear that...

Class Disparities and Prostitution Tackled in Early Female Director's Drama
Pioneering woman director Lois Weber socially conscious drama 'Shoes' among Library of Congress' Packard Theater movies (photo: Mary MacLaren in 'Shoes') In February 2015, National Film Registry titles will be showcased at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater – aka the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation – in Culpeper, Virginia. These range from pioneering woman director Lois Weber's socially conscious 1916 drama Shoes to Robert Zemeckis' 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. Another Packard Theater highlight next month is Sam Peckinpah's ultra-violent Western The Wild Bunch (1969), starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. Also, Howard Hawks' "anti-High Noon" Western Rio Bravo (1959), toplining John Wayne and Dean Martin. And George Cukor's costly remake of A Star Is Born (1954), featuring Academy Award nominees Judy Garland and James Mason in the old Janet Gaynor and Fredric March roles.
