The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced the list of TV nominees for its 77th Annual DGA Awards. The list shows some of the best work that streaming services and traditional networks have done in various areas, such as limited series, variety shows, reality shows, and children’s programs.
HBO’s “The Penguin” has received three nominations in the Movies for Television and Limited Series category, making it a strong candidate. People praised directors Kevin Bray, Jennifer Getzinger, and Helen Shaver for their work on shows such as “Top Hat,” “A Great or Little Thing,” and “Cent’anni.”
Steven Zaillian and Alfonso Cuarón are two well-known filmmakers who stand out in other areas. You can vote for Zaillian to direct Netflix’s “Ripley,” and you can vote for Cuarón to direct Apple TV+’s “Disclaimer.” These nominations show how streaming services are becoming more important in elite TV directing.

Were producers shocked when Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson had a moment at Golden Globes 2025? (Photo Credit – Koimoi)
The 2025 Golden Globes concluded recently, and the awards ceremony saw many interesting moments through the evening. From Zendaya debuting her engagement ring to Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet’s public display of affection. From host Nikki Glaser’s roast with digs at Ben Affleck, Diddy, and Benny Blanco to Demi Moore winning her first award.
In addition, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson shared a brief moment during the gala that surprised the Golden Globe Awards producers. For the uninitiated, the two did not get along well long ago. Here’s how the telecasters reacted to the unscripted and surprising moment.

Update: Though Paramount initially reported that 10.1 million average viewers tuned into the Golden Globes using data from VideoAmp — which would have marked a 7% increase from last year’s 9.4 million — industry standard measurement company Nielsen counted a 2% decrease to 9.3 million viewers.
Paramount and Nielsen have been in a contract dispute since September, barring the former from accessing the latter’s data. This is not the first time VideoAmp has recorded inflated viewership of Paramount content compared to Nielsen; Paramount initially reported 11.4 viewers tuned into the “Yellowstone” finale per VideoAmp, while Nielsen measured 8.1 million.
Per Nielsen, the 2025 show hit a 1.8 rating among adults age 18-49, even with 2024.
Previously: Airing on CBS for the second year in a row, the 82nd annual Golden Globes ceremony hit 10.1 million viewers on Sunday night.

Update Jan. 6, 2025, at 3:23 p.m. Pt: Variety is reporting that Golden Globes executive producer Glenn Weiss wants Nikki Glaser back to host again. “We absolutely had a great experience with her,” he said, “and think that she would be great at this in the long term.” Even though he couldn’t “talk officially,” Weiss added, “I will say, as someone who produces and directs award shows, she really found her niche here, and I think it really worked out beautifully on this show. And I would love to see it continue.” He called her a “home run” talent and that “she did her homework.”

The reviews are in: Nikki Glaser crushed it last night as host of the Golden Globes. She did so well in fact that producers are already trying to sign her up for next year. “We absolutely had a great experience with her, and think that she would be great at this in the long term,” executive producer Glenn Weiss told Variety.
Glaser’s monologue struck a perfect balance between edgy and not-too-mean — but she did have some harsher burns up her sleeve. On Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show this morning, per Variety, Glaser told Stern that she had some meaner punchlines prepared that she ultimately deemed too prickly for a primetime audience on CBS.
Here are some of the edgier jokes that didn’t make the cut…

After Sunday’s successful Golden Globes show, there’s a sizable chance that host Nikki Glaser might return to emcee in 2026.
In a new interview with our sister site Variety, the show’s producers shared their positive sentiments about how the night went and Glaser’s overall performance. “We absolutely had a great experience with her, and think that she would be great at this in the long term,” said executive producer Glenn Weiss less than 24-hours after the show wrapped. Exclusive: Notwithstanding a global calamity, Nikki Glaser will be back to host the Golden Globes next year, and the often bawdy comedian will be pulling in some bigger bucks.
The roast queen was paid a bit more than $400,000 for her inaugural Globes hosting stint on last night’s 82nd annual Golden Globes, I’ve learned. That fee will rise “significantly,” a well placed source says if and when Glaser comes back to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes for the third year in the five-year deal the Globes has with CBS.
The UTA-repped FBoy Island frontlady inked a three-year deal last year to host the revamped Globes. In the aftermath of her generally well received and circumspect tour of duty on the more than three-hour Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner produced show, support for bringing Glaser back was already being expressed late Sunday with the option looking soon to be exercised.

Nikki Glaser earned widespread acclaim for her hosting duties at the 2025 Golden Globes, where her monologue poked fun at Diddy, Ben Affleck and Timothée Chalamet’s mustache. But what about the jokes that didn’t make it to air? Glaser appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio the morning after the awards ceremony (via US Weekly) to share some of the harsher punchlines she decided not to say on live television.
When it came to Diddy, the disgraced music mogul accused of rape and sex trafficking, Glaser had this joke cut from the monologue: “This is the last time all of you will be the same room together until the Diddy trial.” Why? “We had another Diddy mention that worked better… and you only get one Diddy mention. You’re also accusing the people in the room of being involved in that, and they might turn on you.”

Producing an awards show is a difficult job. Balancing the awards (which are kind of the point) with creating a program that viewers at home will find fun and engaging is no small feat.
For this year’s Golden Globes, the production team of Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss once again led the broadcast for CBS, helping first-time host Nikki Glaser navigate the chaos inside the Beverly Hilton while delivering an entertainment show.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Weiss and Kirshner Monday to get their reaction to Glaser’s performance, that unscripted moment between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, and trying to bring the party atmosphere of the International Ballroom to viewers at home.
Now that the Globes are over, it’d be great if I can get your next morning thoughts, how you thought things went last night and what you think clicked.

It’s been less than 24 hours since the Golden Globes ceremony, but the producers behind the Jan. 5 kudocast are already looking at bringing back host Nikki Glaser for an encore next year. “We absolutely had a great experience with her, and think that she would be great at this in the long term,” executive producer Glenn Weiss told Variety.
So, has she already been asked back? “Perhaps!” Weiss said. “I can’t talk officially for anything. I will say, as someone who produces and directs award shows, she really found her niche here, and I think it really worked out beautifully on this show. And I would love to see it continue.”

From inside the ceremony, the writing was on the wall that the Golden Globes 2025 would be a middling telecast when “Moana 2” stars Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson presented the first award with their backs turned to the majority of the audience. There is just no way to sell a comedy bit inside the Beverly Hilton ballroom if you have not captured the attention of the extremely famous attendees lining the stage.
Proof of this was the massive difference in reception between Jo Koy’s ill-fated 2024 monologue, and the one host Nikki Glaser delivered this year. The absolute death knell for the former was that last year’s ceremony had abysmal audio inside the ballroom, giving no incentive for the guests to play along with being lightly roasted.
Meanwhile, the latter comedian’s opening monologue blasted through the speakers all the way up the several tiers of tables,...

Coming off the teetotaling ceremony of last year, the Golden Globes tonight continued its comeback by popping a cork for the show and pouring out some old-fashioned primetime bubbly.
With host Nikki Glaser providing the watered-down drinks and spicules, the aspirational tone for the 82nd annual Golden Globes was set early on. There were a lot of TV wins that replicated the Emmys, some movie wins that look Oscar bound, but little controversy in a show that used to get down in the dirt and revel in it. Like last year, Sunday’s Globes was associated with the boozy, shambolic and often wonderfully mean-spirited show of yesteryear in name only.
Thing is, awards shows, like everything else, have to evolve or die in today’s media environment, and going upmarket may be the best bet to transform Five Buck Chuck into Dom Pérignon.

The ceremony will take place live from the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, January 5, 2025. It’s a big deal because actress Nikki Glaser will be the first woman to host the award show by herself in its nearly 80-year history.
Well-known stars like Michelle Yeoh, Andrew Garfield, Demi Moore, and Colman Domingo are on the impressive list of presenters. Elton John and Glenn Close are just two icons who will take the stage. Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Vin Diesel, and well-known television stars Jennifer Coolidge and Catherine O’Hara are expected to make cameo appearances.

After skewering Tom Brady during his Netflix roast last May, who will comedian Nikki Glaser take to task when she hosts the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who may know the answer before the show even airs.
That’s because Glaser has been practicing her Golden Globes opener at her stand-up shows out on the road and will continue to do so at comedy clubs around Los Angeles this weekend.
“I have I think nine shows between now and Sunday, because I want to keep testing out jokes and I want to keep getting the monologue in the [most] perfect place it can be,” Glaser told The Hollywood Reporter at Thursday’s red carpet rollout for the Globes at The Beverly Hilton. “Not every host does that. Comedian and show producers expect to rebound a year after Jo Koy’s rough outing. “We’re going to get the best of Nikki. It’s going to hit really early and really well.”
During the Golden Globe Awards red carpet rollout Thursday, on a sun-kissed morning at the Beverly Hilton, Nikki Glaser — the comedian tasked with taming the perpetually tough room at this Sunday’s ceremony — emerged boisterous and confident despite some grim recent history. It was only last year, after all, that another stand-up comic, Jo Koy, hired just 10 days before the show, lost the audience early in his monologue and never recovered. The reviews savaged him. “Wildly offensive” was one of the milder observations.
“It wasn’t the greatest night for him or us,” Glenn Weiss, who along with Ricky Kirshner are again serving as executive producers and showrunners for this year’s Globes, admits to Gold Derby.

Turn on Amazon’s Prime Video on Election Night, and you will see the streaming giant do something it has never done before: live coverage of a breaking news event.
Brian Williams, the former NBC News and MSNBC anchor who will host Election Night Live, has described the special as the first “new product introduction in the Election Night space since color television.”
In an interview with Deadline, Williams wouldn’t go into specifics but promised a reveal of “our own exclusive IP.” A set built on a Culver City soundstage will be “all LED,” and he will be mobile “between different areas of the studio where analysts and journalists and a historian or two and our data folks are working.”

He said that he has asked Amazon to take no breaks during the special, but “I don’t know if I’ll win that tug of war.

Prime Video is officially in business with Brian Williams.
The Amazon-owned streaming platform has set an election night special, Election Night Live with Brian Williams, which will see the former NBC News anchor lead viewers through the returns on Nov. 5.
The special will see Williams joined by “prominent contributors” who will provide insight and analysis across the political spectrum. NBC and CNN veteran Jonathan Wald will be executive producer, with Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner’s White Cherry Entertainment producing the special. Weiss, the veteran of the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and a slew of other live events, will also serve as director of the special.
Amazon, of course, does not have its own news division, so the special will combine some familiar elements like real-time poll results and commentary, while also referencing third-party news sources across all political affiliations. A politics RedZone, if you will.

“After 41 years in the business — from local news to network shows to cable news — this feels like the next big thing. And the global marketplace of Amazon is a natural home for this first-of-its-kind venture,” said Williams, in a statement. “Together we will follow the storyline on election night wherever it leads us.”

After two years away from its most familiar home, the Tony Awards will return to New York’s Radio City Music Hall for the 2025 ceremony set for Sunday, June 8.

On Sept. 14, the $2.3 billion Sphere in Las Vegas will see its 160,000-square-foot curved LED screen teleport the 20,000 or so guests to different “worlds,” with the mixed martial arts giant UFC set to take over the venue for what will be the Sphere’s first ever live sporting event.
According to UFC CEO Dana White, the idea sprang from the Sphere’s opening act a year ago: The U2 residency.
“I went to U2 at the Sphere, and halfway through the show, I started to realize the Sphere was the star of the show, not U2. Live-show veterans Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss just came off a very strongly rated Democratic National Convention — more than 26 million people tuned in Thursday night to watch Vice President Kamala Harris accept the presidential nomination.
The Emmy-decorated pair (Kirshner executive produced; Weiss directed) fashioned a four-day event marked by both flash and substance. Though the DNC veterans don’t typically choose the issue-oriented speakers — this year that fell largely to political consultant Stephanie Cutter and her team — Kirshner and Weiss have a huge hand in crafting the show’s feel and influencing the messages that reach us. They also devised that viral Lil Jon roll-call moment.
With the convention over, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the pair on what they’re proud of, what they’d do differently and that Beyoncé rumor that wouldn’t go away.
The DNC felt a little different this year — the energy, the glitz.

Part of the savvy of being a superstar is recognizing those moments when the world says it wants...

The current Best Variety Special Directing Emmy lineup features an abundance of heavy hitters, including reigning champ Hamish Hamilton, who finally triumphed on his seventh bid in this category for helming the “Super Bowl Lvii Halftime Show.” Having shared that victory with Jay-Z, he is now generally expected to achieve a solo win for his work on the 2024 Oscars ceremony.
Hamilton’s most imposing challengers are Stan Lathan (“Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer”) and Glenn Weiss (“76th Tony Awards”), each of whom has already beaten him at least once. Also in the mix are the directors of “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic,” “Tig Notaro: Hello Again,” and “Trevor Noah: Where Was I,” all of whom are new to the category.
In order to determine just how likely Hamilton’s potential follow-up win is, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this...

Stereophonic is now slated to perform at the Tony Awards.
The decision comes amid outcry from fans and the playwright, David Adjmi, himself, after the initial performance lineup was announced and did not include the show. While Stereophonic is a play, it features a score by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, and has been nominated for best score, as well as 12 other Tonys.
Tony producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner had hinted Tuesday that the show may be performing. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the producers were asked if there had been further discussions about them performing.
“There are always discussions that start here and here,” Weiss replied, putting his hands out the length of about a ruler. “There’s a lot of speculation and people forming their own judgments and opinions, and we are trying on our show to represent the season as well as we possibly...

Last year, Tony Awards producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner had the challenge of putting on the live ceremony without a written script, amid the writer’s strike, with the aid of host Ariana DeBose.
This year, the longtime Tonys producers have the benefit of a script and of working again with DeBose, who choreographed the opening number. They also have a new space, with the Tony Awards taking place in the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater for the first time on June 16, after being held at the United Palace theater in Washington Heights last season and other venues before that.
The change of venues has brought up a certain amount of logistical challenges, and solutions. For example, Weiss, who also serves as director of the ceremony, says the ceremony this year will not have a wall that comes down between production numbers and awards, and instead will...
