Bruce Springsteen Confirms the Electric ‘Nebraska’ Tapes Are Real
Image
Bruce Springsteen confirmed the long-rumored existence of an electric, full-band version of his celebrated acoustic record Nebraska — after insisting it didn’t exist during a new interview with Rolling Stone.

The electric Nebraska has become a mythical object for Springsteen fans over the years, and there’s been a lot of evidence suggesting the tapes do exist. For instance, in past interviews with Rs, E Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan and drummer Max Weinberg both separately recalled those sessions, with the latter even remarking, “It was all very hard-edged. As great as it was,...

Bruce Springsteen Confirms Existence of Electric Nebraska
Image
With the upcoming release of Deliver Me From Nowhere, the biopic chronicling the making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, there’s renewed interest in the long-rumored full-band version of the album, affectionately dubbed Electric Nebraska by fans. Some had even hoped The Boss might surprise release the record to coincide with the film’s premiere in October. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Springsteen confirmed that the album does indeed exist — but it’s not in any completed form.

At first Springsteen appeared to forget that the record existed, telling Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene, “We tried to do a few songs with the band for a few minor electric versions of ‘Nebraska,’ maybe something else, I’m not sure. But that record simply doesn’t exist. There is no electric Nebraska outside of what you hear us performing onstage.” Greene then reminded him that E Street Band members...

Bruce Springsteen, the Crooner? Hear Surprising ‘Lost’ Track ‘Sunday Love’
Image
“Sunday Love,” a Bruce Springsteen ballad that’s premiering today that’s officially coming out as part of the Tracks II: The Lost Albums box set, finds the singer-songwriter in crooner mode.

With horns and strings, the song recalls the best of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s melodramatic production, while the way his vocal performance flirts lightly with the swinging drums suggests he was interested in Jimmy Webb western pastiche while writing it. “Each night I pray, each night I pray to God above,” Springsteen sings, “I never had a Sunday love.

Alex G Announces New Album ‘Headlights,’ Shares First Track, ‘Afterlife’
Image
“When the light came big and bright, I began another life,” Alex G sings slowly, like he’s making sense of it, on his new single, “Afterlife.” It’s a pleasant meditation on growing up (“We were mean and 17/Make it like a dream,” goes another lyric) imbued with nostalgic touches like winsome “Maggie May”–style mandolin, a big Max Weinberg snare drum, and even a false ending saved by more mandolin. The song features on his upcoming 10th studio album, Headlights, due out July 18.

The LP features 11 studio recordings...

Cue up the Carole King, because you've got a friend in The Four Seasons.

Adapted from the 1981 film of the same name, Netflix's newest comedy series hails from 30 Rock alumni Tina Fey, Tracy Wigfield, and Lang Fisher. It follows six longtime friends — three couples portrayed by Fey and Will Forte, Steve Carell and Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani — across four separate trips, one each season, over the course of a single year. Now, this isn't a fantasy series, so we're not sure how they're affording all these trips in this economy, but let's chalk it up to the magic of television. A bit less magical, however, is the relationship between Carell's Nick and Kenney-Silver's Anne,...

Image
After more than 50 years of performing with the E Street Band, Bruce Springsteen says he never grows tired of stepping on stage.

"The funny thing about playing is that it's the only thing I know that after you've played thousands of nights, each night feels like the first time," The 20-time Grammy winner explained during an FYC event at the Saban Media Center on Monday, following a screening of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. "Imagine if you could have your first kiss over and over and over again. That's what playing every night is."

Springsteen, who wrote and produced the documentary, was joined on stage by longtime drummer Max Weinberg and Thom Zimny, who directed the Hulu and Disney+ film.

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band offers viewers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the band's live performances, including rehearsal footage, backstage moments, archival clips,...

The Tonight Show calls in late-night TV legend to replace The Roots
Image
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is reaching back into late-night TV history to find a temporary replacement for The Roots. The NBC show announced a familiar face is returning to TV later this month.

Musician Paul Shaffer will fill in for The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon beginning next week. Jimmy Fallon's usual band will be busy rehearsing for the concert special put on as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary.

Shaffer made his mark in late-night TV leading The World's Most Dangerous Band on Late Night with David Letterman and Late Show with David Letterman. The musician revealed to Billboard that the Dangerous Band will join him on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for four shows.

The Roots are perhaps the most talented band on the planet, let alone in late-night TV. So it's no easy task for anyone to replace them.

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Review – Eternal Rock Revolution
Image
“Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” Thom Zimny’s newest documentary, closely examines the famous musician’s life at a turning point. The movie, which came out in 2024, shows how strong Springsteen is as he leads his famous band back onto the world stage after the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to take a six-year break.

The documentary isn’t just a concert movie; it’s a complex look at how art can grow and emotion can last. Since Zimny has worked with Springsteen for a long time and directed “Springsteen on Broadway” and “Letter to You,” this project has his signature documentary style. He carefully stitches together performance footage, practice footage from behind the scenes, and personal thoughts to make a rich tapestry of Springsteen’s current musical journey.

Springsteen isn’t just playing at age 75; he’s making a deep statement about his dedication to art.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band offered up a fun treat on Halloween night (October 31st), opening their show at the Bell Centre in Montreal with a cover of Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters.”

Fan-filmed footage shows the band walking out onto the stage to the spooky instrumental intro of “Ghostbusters,” as Springsteen greeted the crowd with, “Hello, Montreal! Bonsoir!”

A moment later, drummer Max Weinberg launches the band into cover of the theme song to the classic 1984 movie by the same name. Springsteen sings the familiar lines, “If there’s something strange in your neighborhood/ Who you gonna call?,” as his backup singers and the audience respond with “Ghostbusters!”

The song plays perfectly to Springsteen’s current touring lineup, as the core E Street Band members are enhanced by an extended horn section and a handful of backup singers.

Several current members of the E Street Band remain integral in 75-year-old Springsteen's personal and professional life. Patti Scialifa, who currently lends harmony vocals, rhythm guitar, keys, and synthesizer to the group, is also married to Springsteen. ‘Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’ Review: Disney+/Hulu Doc Is a Joyfully Earnest, if Slightly Shallow, Tribute
Image
As they prepare to embark on their first tour in six years, the E Street Band reflect on the “responsibility” they feel to deliver on the sort of energetic, virtuosic shows they’ve built their reputation on.

“People would expect musicians in their 70s to play that loping thing, which is unfortunate,” drummer Max Weinberg bemoans of a sluggish early rehearsal. “We had to recall some of that manic, out-of-control way we played 50 years ago. Really get back to where we were.”

But Disney+ / Hulu’s Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is no deluded attempt to deny the passage of time. Directed by Thom Zimny — who over the past quarter-century has worked on countless films and music videos for the Boss, including the 2018 Netflix special Springsteen on Broadway — the documentary is as much a celebration of what’s changed about the group as what hasn’t,...

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band review – still blowing minds after 50 years
Thom Zimny
Thom Zimny deftly weaves archive footage, recent live performance, candid interviews and fan tributes to create a rich portrait of a modern icon and his legendary band

Bruce Springsteen fans get liner notes of the most luxurious, informed and immersive kind with this documentary by longtime Springsteen chronicler Thom Zimny, who charts Bruce and the E Street Band on their current world tour. Springsteen himself is a bit of a cipher, choosing to contribute voiceover bookends which have the staged quality of his Springsteen on Broadway show. In between, his bandmates speak much more off the cuff as they detail the preparations for, and performances on, their first tour after six years away, a gap partly precipitated by Covid.

There’s an amusing moment early on as they gather for rehearsals, drummer Max Weinberg drily noting that the anthemic She’s the One has slowed to a funereal ballad pace in the time away.

Bruce Springsteen on Disney+ Doc ‘Road Diary,’ Longevity and Audience Connection
Image
London got a taste of The Boss on Friday evening.

Bruce Springsteen took to a smaller stage than he is used to in the British capital on Friday evening, discussing the concert documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band during an event organized by Disney+, which will premiere the film with Hulu on Oct. 25.

Following a screening of the doc, a Q&a that featured The Boss, who was welcomed with a standing ovation, long-time friend and band member Stevie Van Zandt and director Thom Zimny, as well as producer and Springsteen manager Jon Landau, provided additional insight. The session was moderated by Scottish radio DJ and TV host Edith Bowman.

“If you get the art right, the music right and the band right, you go out and play every night like it’s your last night on Earth,” Springsteen said about the longevity of the band.

‘What a F-ckin’ Ride!’ Bruce Springsteen Hits Toronto for New Doc Premiere

You’re used to hearing the sound of “Bruce! Bruuuce! Broooooooooose!” in giant, rock-friendly arenas all over the world. The echo of fans screaming out Bruce Springsteen’s name in the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, however, feels weird — the 2,600 capacity venue is pretty intimate compared to most places the E Street band and its leader play. (It’s more than twice as big as the Walter Kerr Theatre, where Bruce did his Broadway show in 2017, and has more seats than the St. James Theatre, where he did a limited encore run in 2021, but still.

How Bruce Springsteen Doc ‘Road Diary’ Captures Band’s Live Magic and Uncertainty About His Future
Image
Bruce Springsteen could sense that his current tour with the E Street Band would be unlike any of their previous efforts. Filmmaker Thom Zimny, who has collaborated with the music legend for the past 24 years, had the same hunch.

This feeling of capturing a unique moment in time, which began to take shape as the world emerged from the isolation of the pandemic, led to Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 8 before hitting Hulu and Disney+ on Oct. 25, the documentary feature shows Springsteen and his bandmates coming together to shake off the rust before their first live shows together in six years, which they performed for audiences yearning for the return of live entertainment. Seth Meyers to Lose ‘Late Night’ Band in Budget Cuts
Image
NBC isn’t cutting “Late Night” off the network’s regular schedule, but it is going to cut the show’s budget.

The 8G Band, a signature element of the Seth Meyers-led program since it launched in 2014, will stop appearing on the after-hours NBC show, commencing in the fall. Eli Janney, the combo’s keyboardist, told Vulture Tuesday that the trio was informed in recent weeks that the band would cease to be a regular part of the program due to budget cuts.

“In the end, NBC was adamant about where they wanted the budget to go,” Janney told the entertainment-news site. “It’s not just the band; there’s a whole crew that works with the band, so there’s a lot of people employed. I think this was an easy way for them to cut the budget. Easy is not the right word.”

NBC declined to make executives available for comment,...

The E Street Band Wants the World to Hear Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Electric Nebraska’
Image
The biggest, glossiest album of Bruce Springsteen’s career, 1984’s Born in the U.S.A., has a shadowy, equally classic twin — the low-fi, solo-acoustic Nebraska, released two years earlier. The albums are inextricably linked, beginning with the fact that multiple Born in the U.S.A. tracks — the title song, “Downbound Train,” “Working on the Highway” (via an earlier song called “Child Bride”), and the B side “Pink Cadillac” — were originally part of the acoustic demo sessions that ultimately became Nebraska. The first sessions for Born in the U.

40 Years of ‘Born in the U.S.A.’: The E Street Band Looks Back at Bruce Springsteen’s Biggest Album

Sometime in 1984, when E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg saw a bunch of potential covers for Bruce Springsteen’s next album, he instantly noticed the Annie Leibovitz shot of the singer’s jeans-clad rear end. “My comment, jokingly, was ‘I like that one because that’s the view I always have,'” Weinberg says in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “Everybody laughed, and then they picked that shot. And it was a steamroller after that.”

In the new episode, Weinberg and E Street Band keyboardist...

Max Weinberg’s Son Sets Late Night Homecoming
Image
Two weeks after Conan O’Brien’s triumphant return to his former home at 30 Rock, another homecoming of sorts is set to take place on his old show.

Drummer Jay Weinberg, who currently serves as drummer for crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, will sit in with Late Night with Seth Meyers’ 8G Band next month.

Under the musical direction of Fred Armisen, The 8G Band frequently invites artists to sub in for Armisen on drums. Other recent guest drummers have included Fall Out Boy’s Andrew Hurley, No Doubt’s Adrian Young, and Mudhoney’s Dan Peters.

Weinberg’s presence on Late Night creates something of a full-circle moment for the franchise. His father, Max Weinberg, was the drummer and bandleader for O’Brien’s house band.

Best known as the drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, Max led the Max Weinberg 7 throughout O’Brien’s tenure on Late Night,...

The Rotating Drummers Of ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’: Eric Leiderman Snares Star Stickmen As NBC Show Celebrates Tenth Anniversary
Image
How many drummers does it take to make a late-night show? Well over 300 if you’re Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Drummers have been a fixture in late-night for years – think of Max Weinberg, the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band who became the bandleader for Conan O’Brien and Ed Shaughnessy on The Tonight Show with Jonny Carson – but Meyers’ NBC show has paved a new path for stick wizards.

Eric Leiderman, a producer on the show, has been overseeing a rotating group of drummers that since the show began – ten years ago on Saturday.

This has included the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, Guns N’ Roses’ Matt Sorum, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron, Allison Miller and Mudhoney’s Dan Peters.

As the show celebrates this anniversary, Leiderman tells Deadline how this under-the-radar scheme came about and why...

Jay Weinberg Undergoes Hip and Femur Surgeries Following Firing from Slipknot
Image
Drummer Jay Weinberg revealed on Sunday (November 19th) that he underwent surgery on both his hip and femur this past Tuesday (November 14th). The stickman insisted that the medical procedures were long planned, and not related to his firing from Slipknot earlier this month.

Weinberg shared a photo of himself on crutches via Instagram, explaining that he had scheduled the surgery knowing that he had an extensive break in his touring schedule, even had he remained with Slipknot. The band’s next show is scheduled for April at Las Vegas’ Sick New World festival.

His full post reads as follows:

“This Tuesday, after three years of careful planning, I underwent an outpatient procedure to repair the torn labrum of my left hip and shave down a misshapen part of my femur — a condition that never impacted my drumming in any way, but I’ve wanted to take care of during...

Jay Weinberg received a tremendous amount of support from fellow musicians upon being let go from Slipknot, but not from his former Against Me! bandmate Laura Jane Grace. The singer-guitarist mocked the drummer’s ouster from the masked metal band, even calling him a “little bitch boy.”

The cantankerous relationship between Grace and Weinberg dates back to the drummer’s stint in Against Me! and eventual departure from the punk band. Weinberg was a member of Against Me! from 2010 to 2012, and when he joined Slipknot in 2014, Grace tweeted, “Dear Slipknot, good luck with that. #shitbag.”

In another series of tweets at that time, Grace wrote, “We once had a drummer who sprained his ankle and wanted our tour manager to call 911 and have an ambulance come for him #entitlement. When our tour manager said no the drummers Daddy called him and scolded him saying the drummer was a ‘star’ and...

Former Slipknot Drummer Jay Weinberg ‘Heartbroken and Blindsided’ After Split
Image
Slipknot split with drummer Jay Weinberg, announcing last weekend that they had decided “to part ways” with the percussionist. On Saturday, Weinberg revealed that he had not anticipated their decision to let him go.

“I was heartbroken and blindsided to receive the phone call that I did on the morning of November 5th; the news of which, most of you learned shortly after,” Weinberg wrote on Instagram. “However, I’ve been overwhelmed by — and truly grateful for — the outpouring of love and support I’ve received from this incredible community...

Drummer Jay Weinberg “Heartbroken and Blindsided” by Slipknot Firing
Image
A week after he was let go by Slipknot, drummer Jay Weinberg has broken his silence via an emotional social media post. The musician says he was “heartbroken and blindsided” by the band’s decision to fire him.

Last Sunday (November 5th), Slipknot announced, “We would like to thank Jay Weinberg for his dedication and passion over the past ten years. No one can ever replace Joey Jordison’s original sound, style or energy, but Jay honored Joey’s parts and contributed to the last three albums and we, the band, and the fans appreciate it. But as ever, Slipknot is intent on evolving. The band has decided to make a creative decision, and to part ways with Jay. We wish Jay all the best and are very excited for what the future holds.”

On Saturday (November 11th), Jay issued his own statement, writing the following via his Instagram page:...

The Other Eras Tour: 9 Thoughts on Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square Garden
Image
After a two-hour-plus main set that slammed home themes of mortality and impermanence and the way of all flesh, Bruce Springsteen reemerged on Madison Square Garden’s stage Saturday night, April 1, for his usual lengthy encore, and announced “something special for New York City.” He pointed over at Soozie Tyrell, who began a dead-on recreation of one of rock’s few canonical violin melodies, over piano from all-time-great arpeggio purveyor Roy Bittan. They eased the E Street Band into the 11-minute-long, 48-year-old mini-rock-opera “Jungleland,” played and sung with enough muscle...

Decades from now, when historians and epidemiologists look back at the Covid era, they’ll probably have a hard time pinpointing the exact moment the pandemic came to an end in America and normal life resumed. Some will probably point to the day in August 2021 when the vaccination rate hit 70 percent, while others will spotlight April 2022, when airlines dropped their mask mandate, or even Joe Biden’s 60 Minutes...

Bruce Springsteen Breaks Down His R&b Covers LP — and Responds to Fan Outrage Over Ticket Prices
Image
Seven minutes before Bruce Springsteen is scheduled to call Rolling Stone to talk about his new R&b covers album, Only the Strong Survive, a number I’ve never seen before from Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey pops up on my cellphone. This is usually the point where a manager or publicist conferences in the interview subject, but there’s just one person on the other end of the line. “Hey,” says a gruff, familiar voice. “It’s Bruce.”

He’s wrapping up an exhausting couple of weeks in which...

Bruce Springsteen Live! offers glimpse into what it cost to be The Boss
Image
Over the past five decades, Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band have set the bar for live rock’n’roll shows. Their epic performances regularly steam past the three-hour mark, with their longest ever set, a 2012 gig in Helsinki, Finland, clocking in at a staggering four hours and six minutes. Earlier this month, Sir Paul McCartney was asked why his own solo shows have grown ever longer in recent years. “I blame Bruce Springsteen,” the former Beatle told the Fly on the Wall podcast. “I know him and I said to him, ‘It’s your fault, man’… the rest of us look measly if we do an hour.”

Springsteen’s stellar live reputation doesn’t just come from quantity, of course, but sheer crowd-pleasing quality. In a 2011 poll, Rolling Stone readers voted Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band the greatest live act of all time. To witness Springsteen...

Flashback: Bruce Springsteen’s Explosive Launch to 2016 ‘River’ Tour
Image
Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but it seems quite likely that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are planning to tour Europe next year. The rumor mill went into overdrive during Thanksgiving week that dates were about to be announced, and fans even spotted an advertisement at a German bus stop for a June 10, 2022 show at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany. But this all happened right as news of the Omicron variant surfaced, which seems to have delayed the announcement.

The band has been off the road for nearly five years,...

Mick Jagger’s Twitter also shared the two-minute video Saturday, soundtracked by the Rolling Stones’ “If You Can’t Rock Me” and featuring archival footage of Watts onstage, in the studio and on the band’s music video shoots. The video serves a celebration of Watts’ tenure in the Stones.

As Watts says in an interview shown during the tribute,...

“The Rolling Stones’ tour dates are moving ahead as planned,” promoter Concerts West says in a statement, responding to the many inquiries it’s received about the status of the tour.

The 12-date No Filter Tour, which was originally planned for 2020 before the pandemic forced its postponement, kicks off on September 26th in St. Louis,...

Max Weinberg: ‘There Was Only One Charlie Watts’
Image
E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg had one inspiration in mind as he prepared to record his part for “Born in the U.S.A.” back in 1982: the late Charlie Watts’ crisp playing on the Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man.” “When Bruce pulled out that riff, I went right to ‘Street Fighting Man,’ ” Weinberg says. “When I was laying down that drum part, I’m thinking, ‘Ok, I’m Charlie Watts — I’m going to do my best Charlie Watts.’ ” Shortly after learning of Watts’ passing at age 80, Weinberg — who interviewed...

How ‘Two Minutes to Late Night’ Created the Web’s Wildest Quarantine Covers Series
Image
During the past year, the virtual jam — wherein a group of artists each claim their own corner of a 16:9 YouTube screen to rock out in isolation, together — has become as ubiquitous as Zoom conference calls, online schooling, and any other pandemic-era activity. Pearl Jam did it for Covid relief. The Rolling Stones did it for Global Citizen. Metallica did it very quietly. But few virtual jams have been as relentlessly creative and consistently surprising — not to mention flat-out awesome — as the ones featured in metal-themed talk show Two Minutes...

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sandahl Bergman in Conan the Barbarian (1982)
TBS Sets ‘Conan’ Hour-Long Show Finale for June 24
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sandahl Bergman in Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Network promises the last week of the late-night show will include numerous special guests

TBS has set an end date for “Conan.” The late-night show will air its last episode on Thursday, June 24. After that, Conan O’Brien will get to work on his upcoming weekly HBO Max show. So it’s not like he’s retiring just yet.

“Conan’s” last episode will be an hour-long look back at the show’s run and TBS promises that his final week will include numerous special guests (he’s hoping Max Weinberg takes one last turn behind the drums).

When it ends, “Conan” will conclude an 11-year run on TBS. His “Conan Without Borders” travel specials will continue.

O’Brien has been the longest-serving current late-night host, spanning back to 1993 when he took over for Letterman as the host of NBC’s “Late Night.” O’Brien would go on to host “Late Night...

Flashback: Max Weinberg Sings an Impromptu ‘Boys’ at 2008 E Street Band Show
Image
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg turns 70 today.

“I feel better at 70 than I did at 30 for some reason,” he told Backstreets in a statement. “We’re vaccinated, I’ve been busy with City of Delray Beach business, & starting to perform again. Tell all the readers that their support for the past 47 years has been a blessing to me and all my colleagues.”

The “Delray Beach business” he’s referencing is his recent appointment to the Delray Beach Planning and Zoning Board in Florida, where he has a vacation house.
