Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks’ Prime Video Thriller ‘The Better Sister’ Quickly Loses the Plot: TV Review
Image
There have been several TV series recently centering on the intricacies of sisterhood. From Netflix’s “Sirens” to Peacock’s “Long Bright River,” this particular sibling connection is having a moment. Now, Prime Video’s limited thriller, “The Better Sister,” based on the best-selling novel by Alafair Burke and adapted to television by Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado, is showcasing two very different and estranged sisters, torn apart by lies and forced to come together again after a shocking crime rocks their worlds. Despite its electric premise, which includes murder, secrets, affairs and a high-profile trial, the show is underwhelming.

“The Better Sister” opens at dusk. Chloe Taylor (Jessica Biel), an editor-in-chief at a popular magazine, is seen leaving her mentor Catherine Lancaster’s (Lorraine Toussaint) Hamptons estate. After a short drive to her own home, Chloe enters and fiddles around a bit in the kitchen before stepping into the living room.

Only The Good Survive Review: Genre-Bending Crime Saga Is A Breath Of Fresh Air [SXSW 2023]
Image
One of the best things about film festivals is arguably the pre-festival programming website. They often don't have a lot of details about what you can expect from a certain movie, which can sometimes be used to a film's advantage. A movie's description can be the most thread-bare description possible, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's all it has to offer. What lies beyond those two or three sentences could be something that shouldn't be relegated to tiny theaters and hushed whispers.

When you look at the SXSW Film & TV Festival program, you'll find the description of "Only The Good Survive" only really describes part of the movie. Sure, it does center around a back-and-forth confrontation between a young drifter (Sidney Flanigan) and a lots-of-nonsense sheriff (Frederick Weller). That might not be the most original of ideas, but the way that writer-director Dutch Southern portrays this twisty crime caper certainly is.

Out of the Blue Review: Neil Labute’s Noir is a Silly Exercise in Delayed Gratification
Neil LaBute
A new cinematic drinking game has arrived. It’s a doozy, too, when taking a shot every time writer-director Neil Labute uses an intertitle demarking time in Out of the Blue means you’ll probably pass out before Connor’s (Ray Nicholson) inevitable plan to kill Marilyn’s (Diane Kruger) abusive husband is floated, let alone put in motion. Many are arbitrary. Some are exacting. Few have narrative relevance beyond telling us something we already know. I’m thus unsure what the point of using so many is, beyond earning an incredulous laugh—some bookend thirty seconds of footage that provide nothing of consequence anyway. If a character mentions that an event will occur on Tuesday, we don’t need to see “Tuesday” before transitioning to said event. It’s implicit.

My guess is that Labute merely hopes to elicit mood. Film noir plays in the background of many scenes and Marilyn,...

Intriguing New Trailer For Steven Soderbergh's "Choose Your Own Adventure" Film Mosaic
HBO has released a new trailer for Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film Mosaic, which allows its viewers to choose the direction of the story. It's an experimental form of filmmaking it looks like it will be a fun, entertaining, and innovative experience! It's like a live-action "Choose Your Own Adventure" book. When talking about the technology that allows this more immersive movie experience to exist, Soderbergh said:

“It’s a branching narrative piece. Branching narratives have been around forever, but technology now allows, I hope, for a more elegant, intuitive form of engagement than used to be possible. We spent a lot of time on how you touch this thing. I wanted to make sure that it was beautiful and simple, so that when the opportunity arises for you to decide whose perspective you want to follow, it feels organic and not like an...

Trailer For Steven Soderbergh's Cool "Choose Your Own Adventure" HBO Film Mosaic
I love it when writer and director Steven Soderbergh experiments and takes risks with his projects. The guy is an innovator and he's got a new project coming out from HBO that looks and sounds like it could be a ton of fun.

This is a film project is called Mosaic and what makes it so cool and innovative is that fact that it's a "choose your own adventure" experience! Yeah, these types of stories have been around for a long time, but with the technology we have now, it's more immersive. Soderbergh says:

Paul Rudd Learns The Fundamentals of Caring
"How would you wipe my ass?" is not a question asked at every job interview, but it is in the Netflix adaptation of Jonathan Evison's enthusiastically praised 2012 novel, The Revised Fundamentals of Caring.

The Boston Globe critic, in fact, raved that the book reminded him of "Little Miss Sunshine meets Rain Man." The New York Times insisted the work was "infused with a sad rage that makes good comedy great," and the La Weekly added that here was "a literary version of a good grunge song."

Rob Burnett, who served as the executive producer of Late Night with David Letterman for two decades, wrote and directed this celluloid reworking of the tome, apparently a project dear to his heart. The result is a highly engaging yet rather familiar road movie. Two self-involved souls with rather enormous personal problems jump into a van to visit the biggest manmade hole in America,...

Watch: Second Trailer for Rob Burnett's 'The Fundamentals of Caring'
"Does any part of you want to see the world?" A second trailer has arrived online (see the first here) for Rob Burnett's indie film The Fundamentals of Caring, which first premiered at Sundance and is hit Netflix later this week. The dark comedy stars Paul Rudd as a depressed guy who becomes a caregiver, and his first job is caring for Trevor, a lonely teen with muscular dystrophy confined to a wheelchair, played by Craig Roberts. The cast includes Selena Gomez, Jennifer Ehle, Megan Ferguson and Frederick Weller. This is a fun film and has some smart comedy, and the performances from Roberts and Rudd are fantastic. It wasn't my favorite out of Sundance, but it's charming and worth watching if you're interested. Here's the second trailer (+ a poster) for Rob Burnett's The Fundamentals of Caring, from YouTube: The film follows Ben, a retired writer who becomes...

Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts Enjoy the Ride in New Trailer For ‘The Fundamentals of Caring’
Rob Burnett, executive producer of The Late Show with David Letterman since 1996, is returning to the world of film for his second feature, the Netflix-distributed, Sundance-closing The Fundamentals of Caring. The film follows Paul Rudd’s attempt to cope with recent loss through a caregiving program. His first client is a quick-witted boy with a timer on his life (Craig Roberts) who falls for a girl on their road trip (Selena Gomez).

We said in our review,”Roberts especially shines as Trevor, continuing his vein of sardonic types he played before in his breakout film, Richard Ayoade’s Submarine. His performance is not about physicality (The Theory of Everything this isn’t), but Burnett’s deadpan script fits his quick-witted delivery like a glove. Rudd is good value as Ben, believably wracked by guilt over his son but also a great foil to Roberts’ bitterness.”

This second trailer promises a mixture of awkward humor,...

First Trailer For ‘The Fundamentals of Caring’ With Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts & Selena Gomez
Closing the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, The Fundamentals of Caring follows Craig Roberts’ wheelchair-bound teenager and his carer, played by Paul Rudd. Coming from writer-director Rob Burnett, adapting Jonathan Evison’s The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, Netflix picked up the film before its premiere and ahead of a June release, the first trailer has now landed.

We said in our review,”Roberts especially shines as Trevor, continuing his vein of sardonic types he played before in his breakout film, Richard Ayoade’s Submarine. Paul Rudd Plots A Road Trip In First Trailer For Netflix Drama The Fundamentals Of Caring
Paul Rudd and Neighbors alum Craig Roberts get to grips with The Fundamentals of Caring in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming feel-good drama.

Due to makes its bow on the streaming service on June 24, Rob Burnett’s dramedy garnered a healthy amount of buzz during its premiere at Sundance and is the latest indie drama to be scooped up by Netflix – and it’s little wonder why.

Placing Roberts in the role of a crippled 18-year-old, The Fundamentals of Caring tees up a heartfelt dynamic between Trevor and Ben, Paul Rudd’s retired writer seeking a cathartic release from relationship woes and a recent divorce. And so, in an attempt to thrust Trevor out of his mind-numbing comfort zone, the pair plot a road trip to visit a handful of weird and wonderful landmarks across the country, including the World’s Deepest Pit.
