Ethan Hawke is reportedly returning to the Western genre. Deadline has exclusively revealed that the actor is in talks to write and produce a reimagining of The Gunfighter, a classic western released in 1950. The film is still in the early stages of development, with the report stating that Hawke is only set to co-write it with his co-writer Shelby Gaines. However, that could change later, as Hawke could also direct the film. This wouldn't be the actor's first time helping to remake a Western, either.

The original film tells the story of aging gunfighter Jimmy Ringo (Gregory Peck), whose attempts to escape his reputation as a notorious gunslinger and killer intersect with his wish to reunite with his wife (Helen Westcott) and the son he didn't know he had. Ethan Hawke is giving a classic Western the remake treatment. The Moon Knight actor is reportedly on board to help develop an all-new take on the 20th Century Studios movie The Gunfighter.

Per Deadlline, Hawke has signed on to co-write the script for a new take on The Gunfighter, a 75-year-old Western with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, for 20th Century Studios. His writing partner, Shelby Gaines, will be alongside him as a co-writer. There is said to be hope at the studio that Hawke will also direct the remake, but the current deal that is in place is for the actor to serve as a writer and producer. It's also not known if Hawke will appear in the film, which is in its very early development stages.

Well, howdy there, folks. It looks as if Ethan Hawke is saddling up for a remake of the Gregory Peck Western The Gunfighter at 20th Century Studios. According to Deadline, the project is in its early development stage, with Hawke co-writing the screenplay alongside Shelby Gaines. Hawke, a significant fan of the Henry King-directed original, plans to star in the film as Jimmy Ringo, a man with an itchy trigger finger who finds himself in trouble after riding into town looking for his true love. Only she doesn’t want to see him. While Jimmy doesn’t come to town looking for trouble, trouble finds him everywhere. Although he’s not contracted to, Hawke could also direct the film.

As a boy, I watched shows like The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt, and Tales from the Darkside with my brother and dad. And so a love of anthology horror (and sci-fi) was born. Movies like Creepshow are crucial cannon classics, and I've found a new addition for the anthologies in Screamtime. Each of the three stories is British, bookended by a group of Americans watching the movies (after having stolen them from a VHS store in Manhattan).

In general, when I'm out for British-made B-flicks, I go to the 50s and 60s for their sci-fi atrocities. However, Screamtime, while it was made by limeys, holds all the sensibilities of American B-grade fare of the 80s. The first story involves an aging Punch and Judy puppeteer whose family loathes his puppetry, and decide to move to Canada for career opportunities.

In short, the annual Toy Fair that kicks off in New York this weekend is expected to place bigger bets on the latest dolls and playthings based on movies and TV shows.

"Every studio is very involved this year," says Reyne Rice, trends specialist for the Toy Industry Assn. "It's definitely going to be a big year for entertainment licenses."

Rice says that 25%-35% of all toy dollars are typically spent on products tied to a licensed or entertainment property, but this year, it may be more. She counts more than 25 movies that lend themselves to toy treatment; in most years, it's closer to 10-15.

That's good news for Hollywood studios.

In light of the DVD rant about pushed back Canadian release dates I went on a couple of weeks ago I should probably say that, this week, I've been made to eat my words. See, like many of you 70s apocalyptic scifi buffs out there, I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Z.P.G (or Zero Population Growth). Except after doing some research on the title, I realized that it was actually released in Canada back in June! So there you go, we Canucks might not be as hard done by as I originally thought. Another scifi flick out this week is Stephen Chow's charming CJ7 which I haven't actually seen yet.
