Francis Ford Coppola
Coppola Recovering in Rome After Planned Heart Procedure
Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola is recovering in a Rome hospital after undergoing what his spokesman called a “long-planned update” to treat atrial fibrillation, a heart-rhythm disorder the 86-year-old director has managed for three decades.

The procedure was performed Tuesday at Policlinico Tor Vergata by cardiologist Andrea Natale; doctors say the filmmaker is “stable and doing fine,” with discharge expected later this week. Winner of five Academy Awards, Coppola had been staying at his family’s Palazzo Margherita hotel in Bernalda when routine tests indicated the need for the tune-up.

He travelled to the appointment by car and later posted a smiling photograph on Instagram, writing “I am well” to reassure supporters alarmed by early media reports suggesting an emergency admission. A representative added that the visit had been on the calendar for months and rejected claims of a cardiac scare, noting that the director’s blood oxygen remained normal throughout.

Apple TV+'s Perfect Bridgerton Replacement Is Climbing Global Streaming Charts As Season 2 Ends
Image
Apple TV's perfect Bridgerton replacement is climbing the global streaming charts ahead of its season 2 finale. Based on Julia Quinn's romance novels, each season of Netflix's popular period drama follows a different member of the eponymous noble family as they find love in a historically alternative version of Regency-era London.

Bridgerton's cast includes names like Jonathan Bailey, Nicola Coughlan, Phoebe Dynevor, Regé-Jean Page, and Simone Ashley, many of whom have been catapulted to greater fame courtesy of the series. Since its debut in 2020, Bridgerton has consistently been one of Netflix's most-watched series, with seasons 1 and 3 both ranking among the streamer's top 10 most popular shows of all time worldwide.

As a result, there have been many shows similar to Bridgerton attempting to capitalize on its success, including Prime Video's My Lady Jane, which was controversially canceled after one season in August 2024. Now, another Bridgerton replacement is rising up the global streaming charts,...

Image
The Buccaneers has taken over the global streaming charts following the release of its second season. Per FlixPatrol, the Apple TV+ period drama has surged into the Top 10 in multiple countries and has been drawing in new viewers each week. The Buccaneers Season 2 finale is now scheduled for August 6, and the buzz around the series is at an all-time high. It appears that the show's mix of romance, sisterhood, and a historical setting is connecting well with audiences, especially those who enjoy shows like Bridgerton, The Gilded Age,and Downton Abbey.

The Buccaneers is adapted from Edith Wharton’s unfinished 1937 novel, and follows five young American women from wealthy families who travel to England in hopes of landing titled husbands and climbing the British social ladder. "I Used My Last Hundred Million Dollars": Francis Ford Coppola Reveals Financial Challenges For His Next Movie After $14M Sci-Fi Disappointment
Image
Francis Ford Coppola has explained the impact Megalopolis is having on his next movie. Self-financed by the five-time Oscar winner, the 2024 sci-fi thriller is the director's passion project, retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in an alternate New York and drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States.

The movie has a stellar cast, featuring Adam Driver as Cesar, a genius architect, Nathalie Emmanuel as Julia Cicero, Aubrey Plaza as Wow Platinum, and Giancarlo Esposito as Franklyn Cicero. But despite being fueled by star power, it struggled to find a distributor to cover the production costs and marketing. Marred by controversy, Megalopolis polarized critics and grossed only $14.3 million against a massive $120 million budget.

During an interview with Deadline, Coppola talked about how his last movie got him in a bit of trouble financially. The filmmaker revealed that he had already finished the script for...

‘The Gilded Age’ Director Unpacks Bertha’s Visit, Women’s Suffrage and That Shocking Death
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode six of The Gilded Age.]

It’s hard to believe The Gilded Age is winding down. The latest episode “If You Want to Cook an Omelette” is number six of just eight, yet the drama is not de-escalating — only revving up, especially with the just-in news of a season four renewal.

In the latest episode, Bertha (Carrie Coon) traveled to England to “fix” things for Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) who expressed her unhappiness to her father George (Morgan Spector) who, of course, let his wife have it. Intriguingly, her visit made a huge impact not just on Gladys, but perhaps on how fans view her actions. Could Bertha have been right about Gladys marrying the Duke all along?

Just as Gladys and Hector (Ben Lamb) may be finding their groove towards happy matrimony, there appears to be trouble brewing for Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Bertha, and George’s son Larry (Harry Richardson) who just became engaged,...

‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Is a Mess but It Still Hasn’t Stooped Below Show’s Lowest Rated Episode From Season 1
Image
The Buccaneers took over the audience by storm, but since its revival of Season 2, the show is seemingly a mess, especially after the release of Episode 5, wherein a mix of plot, confused characters, and weak showcasing of a set notion destroys the set standard for this historical drama. As compared to the Season 1, Episode 1, “American Poison” rating at 6.7/10, the show’s current season is still doing well on the charts.

Following the story of five American girls, the show depicts the themes of women’s independence, societal norms, and clashes between the characters juggling through their thoughts. While Season 1 dealt with the girls exploring relationships, Season 2 has the girls taking charge of their responsibilities and discovering their own paths.

The Buccaneers: Who Nan Ends Up With In the Book, Revealed
Image
The Buccaneers novel by Edith Wharton revealed who Nan St. George ended up with, and it is an intriguing choice. Apple TV+ adapted The Buccaneers on the small screen, and one of the anchors of its story is the romantic journey of the carefree and adventurous Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth). Aside from the bombshell twist that Patti St. George was not Nan's real biological mother, much of her journey in Season 1 was mainly focused on the love triangle between Nan, the Duke of Tintagel, Theo (Guy Remmers), and his best friend Guy (Matthew Broome).

‘The Gilded Age’ Finds Its Balance in the Best Season Yet: TV Review
Image
“The Gilded Age” has always been influenced by the work of Edith Wharton. Both the novelist’s oeuvre and the HBO drama are set among the upper echelons of New York society in the late 19th century, documenting frictions both large (the rise of a new industrial elite) and small (imperceptible breaches of etiquette).

But in its first two seasons, “The Gilded Age” heaped all its stakes onto a handful of storylines, most of them anchored by the series’ few characters of color. Creator Julian Fellowes otherwise eschewed the grand, tragic sweep of Wharton’s best-known work: the downfall of Lily Bart in “House of Mirth,” or the thwarted love of Newland Archer and Countess Olenska in “The Age of Innocence.” Instead, the show’s minimal upheaval tends to amount to a slightly rearranged status quo. In Season 2, the blue-blooded Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) lost her fortune and fell...

Season 2 of This Juicy Historical Romance Series Can’t Top Its Season 1 Score on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
After two years of waiting, fans of The Buccaneers are finally greeted with Season 2. But no matter how long since the historical romance last hit AppleTV+, not everything is as Gilded as it once was. The new season of the series has garnered a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a slight drop compared to the Certified Fresh score of 76% when the show first aired in 2023. When fans were first introduced to the vibrant characters of Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, there was a lot of potential.

The Buccaneers follows five American women in the 1870s as they search for status and marriages across the pond. Culture clash is at the center of the series, as well as all the hallmarks of a typical historical romance. Love triangles, scandal, and friendship power a series about an era long since passed. The first season of The Buccaneers was an antidote to others of its kind,...

Season 2 Of Apple TV+'s Historical Drama Debuts With Slightly Lower Rotten Tomatoes Score, But Audiences Are Loving The Show's Return
Image
Apple TV+'s lavish period drama, The Buccaneers, has returned for season 2, and while critics are a little less receptive, audiences love the show's second outing. The Buccaneers, based on Edith Wharton's final 1938 unfinished novel (it was later completed by Marion Mainwaring in 1993), follows Gilded Age debutante Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth) and her friends as they travel from America to England to experience the social season. In the season 1 finale, Nan married Theo, the Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers), to save her sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) from an abusive marriage, despite being in love with someone else.

The Buccaneers season 2 picks up right where season 1 left off, with an unexpected wedding guest appearing at Nan and Theo's wedding reception. Season 2 has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics' score of 71%, which is a little lower than season 1's certified fresh score of 76%. The audience score, however, tells a different story,...

Is Apple TV+’s ‘The Buccaneers’ Worth Watching?
Image
Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers is back with season 2 today, June 18, 2025, and we can’t wait to dive right in. It is a period drama, reimagined and based on the works of Edith Wharton. The series is based on the lives of five American women who attempt to fit into British high society in the 1870s.

It is a perfect blend of modern sensibilities and a historical backdrop, featuring contemporary themes alongside a diverse cast. The previous season left us on a cliffhanger, and the story will pick up right from there with new weekly episodes.

The Buccaneers is a modern twist on a classic tale

Edith Wharton’s novel has been approached with a fresh take in The Buccaneers. The series deeply emphasises independence and female friendships, offering a different story from a typical romance. There is also an LGBTQ+ storyline added to the mix, and the story feels wholesome and well-rounded.

At long last, Season 2 of The Buccaneers is almost here on Apple TV+ to pick up with the titular young American women after their explosion onto the scene in Gilded Age London back in 2023. Although things began in high spirits as the ambitious and extroverted friends navigated English high society and courted suitors, the Season 1 finale left things on a bleak note, with each of the women forced to accept a reality they did not desire. Chief among them is Nan (Kristine Frøseth), who marries a man she doesn't love to become the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country, to protect her sister, Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), from the wrath of her abusive husband. Materialists Review: A Cynical Rom-Com Missing the Right Ingredients
Image
Materialists is a film with a classic screwball setup: a young, beautiful matchmaker meets the charming, rich man of her dreams on the same night she runs into her broke, handsome ex-boyfriend. But Celine Song’s sophomore feature takes a more dry, dramatic approach to explore dating in the modern world. Channeling Jane Austen, Materialists discusses relationships like a numbers game where height, income, and age are the key factors to dating success. Every moment we spend with our heroine Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is dominated by the most clinical judgments of men, women, and especially herself. When wealthy finance guy Harry (Pedro Pascal) takes her out to dinner, Lucy describes herself as a failed actress and college dropout with debt and an $80K salary (before taxes). Why be with her when he could be with someone ten years younger who doesn’t need to work for a living and has...

‘Materialists’ Review: Celine Song’s Follow-Up to ‘Past Lives’ Is a Rom-Com Played Straight, With Dakota Johnson as a Matchmaker Tangled Up in Love and Money
Image
Back in the day, you would have been hard-pressed to find a bigger fan of “Sex and the City” than I was. Yet even as I think it’s a deliriously great show, a part of me — the movie critic side — has always wondered, in the back of my mind, what “Sex and the City” might have looked like had it been played, at times, as less of a wild confectionary sitcom and a bit more close to the bone.

“Materialists,” a lavishly charming New York story of love, money, and dating, is the movie that finally answers that question for me. It’s the second feature written and directed by Celine Song, who made the wistfully sublime “Past Lives,” and it stars Dakota Johnson as a stylishly crisp, take-charge professional matchmaker and Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal as the men she winds up caught between.

“Materialists” sounds like a romantic comedy,...

Who Is Nell? ‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Introduces New Character in Latest Trailer
Image
The Buccaneers, on Apple TV+, is all set for season 2, releasing on June 18th, 2025. The show has stirred intrigue by introducing a new character, Nell, and it will be portrayed by Leighton Meester. She’s famously known for her role as Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl.

The second season welcomes series newcomer Leighton Meester, whose character Nell can be seen at the end of the clip asking Christina Hendricks’ Patricia St. George to introduce her to Kristine Frøseth’s Nan St. George.

“Theo and I are happy,” Nan says at the beginning of the clip. “I’m in this for life.”

This declaration comes after Nan had to make a difficult decision and marry Theo (Guy Remmers), Duke of Tintagel, so that her flame Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome) could help Nan’s sister Ginny (Imogen Waterhouse) escape from her abusive husband Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick).

Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton’ Struggles Really Hard for This Kind of Romance, but Martin Scorsese Delivered in 1993
Image
In a world where shows like Bridgerton serve romance with a side of pop songs and steamy stares, it’s easy to forget what true emotional depth looks like in period drama.

But back in 1993, Martin Scorsese gave us The Age of Innocence, a love story set in 1870s New York that feels more intense than anything we’re getting from today’s streaming hits.

It’s stylish, yes, (like c’mon it has to be the 1870s NY) but also sharp, quiet, and emotionally devastating. Where modern shows dress up drama in glitter, Scorsese gave us real heartbreak under the velvet and lace. And he did it all without breaking a sweat or a corset.

Why do modern period romances feel so empty next to this 1993 classic?

Netflix’s Bridgerton may look like the best chance of period drama romance on TV people will get these days, but it...

Another Martin Scorsese and Daniel Day-Lewis Movie Is Getting Turned Into a TV Series
Image
Netflix is bringing another classic novel adaptation to the screen. Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, which was previously filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1993, is being adapted into a miniseries at the streamer. The news comes on the heels, coincidentally, of Miramax announcing plans to produce a series adaptation of Gangs of New York, another Scorsese film that, like The Age of Innocence, also starred Daniel Day-Lewis.

Netflix has tapped British screenwriter Emma Frost, a veteran of Shameless, The Spanish Princess, and The Man in the High Castle, to showrun the series. Frost is not to be confused with the Marvel Comics character of the same name, although she did write for The White Queen. It will attempt to stay true to the novel's original themes, while also bringing the novel to a new, younger audience. The series is the latest in Netflix's attempts to mine the literary canon for content.

This fresh take is true to Wharton’s novel but will speak to a new generation as we traverse the ballrooms and bedrooms of these young people, asking the question what is love — and what is lust? And should we ultimately be driven by our heads or by our hearts?”

Emma Frost — known for her work on shows like “The Spanish Princess,” “The White Princess,” and “The White Queen” — will write all episodes and serve as executive producer and showrunner. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping,...

Image
Netflix has ordered The Age Of Innocence, a limited series based on Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Emma Frost has penned the adaptation and will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the Chernin Entertainment production.

The series was quietly greenlighted earlier this year and has been prepping for a fall start of production in Europe for a couple of months now. Netflix would not confirm the pickup to Deadline, instead opting to announce it on World Book Day.

A fresh take on Edith Wharton’s classic novel of forbidden love in 19th century New York, The Age Of Innocence is a will-they/won’t-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms.

The project is clearly geared toward the wide global fanbase of Netflix’s hit period romance drama Bridgerton, also a book adaptation.
