Almost seven years ago, it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.” That project never made it into production – and earlier this year, it was revealed that we’re going to be getting a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival instead, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to the role of Buffy Summers and Chloé Zhao directing the first episode. Since then, teenage actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter) has been cast as a new slayer (an introverted high school student named Nova)… and now, filming is underway! Gellar has been spotted on the set of the pilot episode, and those images can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Chase Sui Wonders has joined the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer project at Hulu, taking a guest role in the pilot as a character identified as Shirley, according to an individual with knowledge of the production. The casting arrives as cameras roll in Los Angeles and Sarah Michelle Gellar returns to the franchise that made her a household name, with on-set images surfacing over the weekend.
Wonders, who recently appeared opposite Gellar on the big-screen revival of I Know What You Did Last Summer, said working alongside the original Buffy again was a thrill and praised Gellar’s leadership on the new series. The pilot is directed and executive produced by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. The series is housed at 20th Television and Searchlight TV, with executive producers including Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton; writing and day-to-day showrunning are led by Nora and Lila Zuckerman.

James Gunn‘s Superman brought in the big bucks at the domestic box office this weekend as it officially surpassed Zack Snyder‘s highest-grossing Dceu film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With $331.2 million in the bag (Box Office Mojo), Superman leaves BvS behind to bite the dust with the latter’s $330.36 million (Box Office Mojo).
Moreover, Superman‘s theatrical run is far from being over at this point. The movie has not only buried Snyder’s crown but also fended off all three MCU giants of 2025, i.e., Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four, to stand alone at the top – and all before hitting digital release, too.
This also marks the first time in 17 years that DC has beaten Marvel at the box office since Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight overshadowed Iron Man in 2008.

The first already-canceled show I fell for, even before "Firefly," was the CW's comedy "Reaper." While "Firefly" received a belated movie wrap-up in 2005 with "Serenity," the story of "Reaper" has remained open since its 2009 cancellation. Perhaps the show invited its own grim fate with a name that suggested death.
What is "Reaper," anyway, though? Well, I don't bring up "Firefly" out of nowhere; if you're a fan of Joss Whedon's writing, then "Reaper" might be up your alley too. The show is best described as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" crossed with Kevin Smith, from "Clerks" to "Dogma." (Smith even directed the "Reaper" pilot.)
Created by Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, "Reaper" follows 21-year-old slacker Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison). On his birthday, he gets a very unpleasant gift. Before Sam was born, his father John (Andrew Airlie) was "very sick," so Sam's parents made a deal with the Devil (Ray Wise) for a cure.

New images from the set of the Buffy the Vampire Slayerreboot reveal Sarah Michelle Gellar's return to her most iconic role. It was announced earlier this year that Hulu was moving forward with a pilot for a Buffy reboot, with Oscar-winning Nomadland director Chloé Zhao directing the pilot. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are attached as writers.
Even though Gellar is set to reprise her seminal performance as Buffy Summers in a recurring capacity, the focus will turn to a new slayer. Ryan Kiera Armstrong, a young performer who broke out with Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, will play the lead character.
Set images from the New York Posthave revealed the first look at Gellar's return as Buffy Summers. The star of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions is dressed in a red mini dress with long sleeves, pink stilettos, with a deep V-neckline, and a large,...

Following our first look at new Buffy the Vampire Slayer lead Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) on the set of the New Sunnydale reboot/sequel series, Sarah Michelle Gellar has now been spotted on the Los Angeles set.
As we first reported on FearHQ.com, Buffy Summers has traded in her vampire hunting gear for a red power suit, with many fans wondering if she's gone "corporate" since we last saw her in action. If the vampire threat went away for a while, she's likely gotten on with her life before something happens to pull her back in.
The prevailing theory among fans is that Armstrong's character is Buffy's daughter, with the "Vampire Slayer" mantle passed down to the teenager.
Gellar is unlikely to be the only familiar face we see as the actress, who also serves as executive producer, recently said, "We will try to find...

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which reportedly has "New Sunnydale" as its working title, has started shooting in Los Angeles. With that comes what appears to be a first look at Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the show's new lead slayer.
There have been some grumblings about the 15-year-old Armstrong being a little too young for this role, and she definitely looks like a high schooler here. However, it's worth noting that in the original series, Buffy Summers was also only meant to be 16, though Gellar was 20 at the time.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is reprising her role as Buffy in the series, which added Rakotohavana (Secret Society of Second Born Royals) as Hugo, Ava Jean (Law & Order: Svu) as Larkin, Sarah Bock (Severance) as Gracie, Daniel di Tomasso (Witches of East End) as Abe, and Jack Cutmore-Scott (Oppenheimer) as Mr. Burke earlier this week.

Fans would be surprised to learn that Josh Brolin‘s role was supposed to be a cameo before it was extended into a full-blown villain. During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin told Josh Horowitz that he was approached for a 10-minute role in the MCU when he was doing Everest.
He shared that Marvel later changed the role to become a major character in its Infinity Saga finale. He shared:
That was supposed to be a cameo when it was first brought to me. I was doing the Everest movie in London, and [Marvel] brought me this huge [character] bible. Despite high ratings, James Gunn‘s Superman failed to reach great numbers both domestically and internationally. With MCU being in a not-so-great shape, Gunn’s Dcu is still unable to battle it out with the mighty MCU when it comes to earning at the box office.
With The Fantastic Four: First Steps releasing on July 25 and Superman releasing on July 11, I thought that the Dcu might be able to beat the MCU this time, considering the consistently bad projects that Marvel had been making and how terrible the Og The Fantastic Four movies were.
Well, turns out that even after being at a disadvantage of a later release date and a legacy that they shouldn’t be proud of, The Fantastic Four: First Steps managed to almost catch up to the Dcu movie. The constant winning doesn’t just stop with Superman; the MCU has been dominating box office collections for a long time.

We recently learned that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival's new Slayer will be played by 15-year-old Star Wars: Skeleton Crew breakout Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and thanks to a leaked logline, we know what kind of evil forces she'll be facing off against - initially, at least.
Armstrong's character had not been officially named, and was simply described as "an introverted high-school student" in Deadline's report. Now, we have confirmation that the new Slayer will go by Nova, and the first blood-sucking bad guys she will square off against will be... Jack and Shirley.
"Nova, a 16-year-old bookworm, discovers she’s a vampire Slayer in a rebuilt Sunnydale, split between gritty Old Sunnydale and upscale New Sunnydale. During Vampire Weekend, a festival celebrating the town’s dark past, vampires Jack and Shirley emerge from a construction site, killing a teen and planning a ritual to raise a vampire army at the Cursed Circle.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is back in action, getting ready alongside the new star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the new series moves forward. The upcoming show isn’t really a reboot but more like a sequel, following a fresh group of vampire slayers led by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who recently starred in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
The new Buffy series isn’t officially approved yet, but Hulu has ordered a pilot episode. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to lead the project. Ryan Kiera Armstrong’s character, named Nova for now, will be the main focus, with Buffy Summers, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s iconic role, likely appearing as a mentor.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was released on March 10, 1997, on the WB channel, bringing about a new wave of content and a new kind of heroine. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy was tough, smart, funny, and flawed. Her portrayal of the teenage vampire slayer instantly became iconic.
The show was created by Joss Whedon and spanned seven seasons, bringing together rich character development, teen angst, and supernatural action. Over two decades after the show aired its finale in 2003, Buffy is still a cultural reference point. Now there’s soon going to be a Buffy spinoff, but what is the original Buffy cast up to now? Let’s cast a glance at some of the main cast members of the show and see what they are up to now.

Into every generation a Slayer is born, and now the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has given her a name.
Per Deadline, Ryan Kiera Armstrong's new Slayer will be called Nova, describing her as "an introverted high-school student" who becomes the latest Chosen One to battle supernatural forces of evil. Additionally, the article confirmed actor Kingston Vernes will join the show as Nova's potential love interest Carson, a fellow student at New Sunnydale Academy who "starts noticing her after a life-changing event."
Prior to Buffy, Armstrong made appearances in shows like Anne with an E and American Horror Story: Red Tide, most recently playing At Atin resident Fern in the Star Wars pirate adventure Skeleton Crew. The actress' involvement was confirmed in May, with Sarah Michelle Gellar -- who'll reprise her role as fellow Slayer Buffy Summers -- revealing Armstrong got the part via an Instagram recording of their conversation.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy and executive produce the show. Starring alongside her, Armstrong and Vernes will be a variety of actors, both established and up-and-coming, and small snippets have been released about some of their characters as well. Faly Rakotohavana will play Hugo, a privileged but likable...

As Marvel finds box office success with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we take a look back at the 2015 film’s difficult production.
On the 6th August 2015, director Josh Trank dropped a bombshell. It was the day before the release of his comic book movie, Fantastic Four, but the filmmaker wasn’t in a celebratory mood.
“A year ago,” Trank wrote on Twitter, “I had a fantastic version of this. And it would have received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”
It was the moment when the darkening mood behind the scenes burst into public view. Although anonymous stories about Fantastic Four’s troubled production had emerged in Hollywood outlets months earlier, Trank’s tweet was unprecedented – it was swiftly deleted, probably following irate calls from 20th Century Fox, but the damage was done. One analyst told TheWrap at the time that Trank’s...

Coyote vs. Acme is finally getting a release under Ketchup Entertainment after Warner Bros. earlier scrapped it. The film’s footage was featured at the San Diego Comic-Con, where actor Will Forte and director Dave Green appeared on a panel discussion. Forte shared that he was “pretty speechless” after Ketchup took over the movie (via THR).
Forte shared at the Sdcc, “It blows my mind. You think back to the journey this movie has taken. I had kind of given up hope at a certain point, so this is amazing.” The audience was also shown the first footage of the movie, where Wile E. Coyote first meets attorney Kevin Avery, played by Forte, after seeing him on a TV commercial.

The Alan Tudyk-starrer Resident Alien has been canceled after four seasons. While the show had good ratings and received good responses from critics and audience alike, the makers announced that the fourth season would be its last. Showrunner Chris Sheridan mentioned that he was glad that they were able to wrap storylines, but still left things open for a potential future (via TV Line).
Resident Alien joins a list of incredible shows that have faced the axe prematurely in recent times. While the sci-fi premise begins off in a typical alien invasion fashion, it becomes a heartwarming take on what it means to be human and shows the growth of Alan Tudyk’s Dr. Harry. The actor has also been praised for his phenomenal performance.

Since then, teenage actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter) has been cast as a new slayer (an introverted high school student named Nova), and today, Deadline reports that five actors have been cast in series regular roles! They are Faly Rakotohavana (Unprisoned), Ava Jean (Law & Order: Svu), Sarah Bock (Severance), Daniel Di Tomasso...

Pedro Pascal Was “Appalled” by Wonder Woman 1984, But It Can’t Beat His Worst Look in Iconic TV Show
Pedro Pascal’s big breakthrough came when he starred as the goatee-having Dornish prince Oberyn Martell. He later portrayed the role of a mustache-carrying DEA agent Javier Peña in the Netflix show, Narcos.
Why are we talking about Pedro Pascal‘s facial hair, though? Because the actor decided to go completely clean-shaven for his role as Maxwell Lord in Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot‘s 2020 film, Wonder Woman 1984. The actor revealed (via Variety) he looks very awful when completely clean-shaven.
I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful].
Well, Pedro Pascal was saying it from experience as the actor starred as a completely-shaven Maxwell Lord, and he was “Appalled“ by the way that he looked (strongly agree).

Sarah Michelle Gellar is the gift that keeps on giving. 22 years after putting down her wooden stake at the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 7's finale, which aired on May 20, 2003, she is almost back to Sunnydale.
Earlier this year, Gellar revealed she is making her return to Buffy, despite years of refusing to do so. She found the best way to bring the story back with her new partners — Nora and Lilla Zuckerman as the writers and showrunners, and Chloé Zhao as director. In a new photo on Instagram, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series is in pre-production.

Freddie Prinze Jr. has a favorite piece of lore from his childhood.
In the late ’70s, only a few years after the untimely death of his famous father, Prinze went with his mother to Universal Studios. The back-lot tour was delightfully chock-a-block with actors playing the company’s iconic monsters.
“Wolf Man, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon,” Prinze remembers. While other kids hid behind their parents, screaming, Prinze was starstruck. “I would ask for hugs,” he says. “I hugged Frankenstein.”
In time, Prinze would spin his boyhood love of monsters into a Hollywood career as a ’90s heartthrob. His Noxzema smile and chiseled jawline made him the object of desire for millions of rising millennials in the Ugly Duckling rom-com “She’s All That.” He’s also synonymous with beloved horror franchise “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a movie that cemented him — and co-stars Jennifer Love Hewitt,...

There are many TV shows that are canceled way too early, but one that still stings after almost 25 years is the sci-fi classic, Firefly. One of the greatest TV shows of all-time, the series took just 14 episodes to bypass many other shows with multiple seasons. Of course, star Nathan Fillion is currently appearing as Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman, but a reunion with his former castmates to announce the first ever range of Firefly Funko Pops has made everyone a little nostalgic for the series.
Firefly was the creation of Joss Whedon, and aired on Fox in 2002. Despite its incredible popularity among fans, the series did not make it to a second series, although it was given the consolation of a feature film continuation in Serenity in 2005, which became a fan-pleasing coda to the series, but a long way short of what many had hoped for. Kal-El No: WB Fast-tracking New Wonder Woman Movie Without Gal Gadot After Superman Success (Report)
Superman‘s critical success and promising box-office returns have reportedly prompted a new Wonder Woman feature in motion, which won’t see the return of Dceu’s Gal Gadot. Although a WW feature wasn’t part of Dcu’s initial slate, with the lone Amazon-centric project being Paradise Lost, it seems DC Studios is ready to hit the gas on their plans for Diana.
While nothing concrete about this movie has been unveiled, going by Variety‘s reports, it might not be too long before something major comes our way regarding Diana’s introduction in the Dcu.
A Wonder Woman Movie Is Reportedly Getting Fast-Tracked at DC
James Gunn has already touched on the prospect of a Wonder Woman movie in the past, clarifying that a WW project was already being written. David Zaslav, in his interview with The New York Times, echoed Gunn’s comments, adding, “They’re working on Wonder Woman.

When it comes to sci-fi, the genre has a ton of great television to choose from. Whether it's Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica, there's something for every type of fan. However, when it comes to shows that have been released in the 21st century, there's no program as beloved as Firefly. It's been over 20 years since the series was abruptly canceled after one season, but more people are discovering it every year thanks to streaming. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going strong for close to two decades now. It all dates back to 2008's "Iron Man." Directed by Jon Favreau, nobody could have expected Robert Downey Jr.'s turn as Tony Stark to build an empire that has led to well over $30 billion at the global box office, with Marvel Studios rapidly approaching its 40th feature film.
Though it may not get much credit, there was a moment in the summer of 2015 when it was clear that the MCU had hit a certain fever pitch with general moviegoers. That moment came when director Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man" hit theaters. By far one of the biggest swings Marvel took in terms of giving a character the spotlight who didn't have a guaranteed audience by any means, it became a sizable hit, taking in $519 million worldwide against a reasonable $130 million budget.

As James Gunn’s Superman movie soars into theaters, I wanted to touch on a subject. Specifically, discourse around “muscle suits”. Because that’s what a grown man should be doing ahead of something cool—focusing on what another man I don’t even know (and isn’t even real) wears or not. It is totally not at all ridiculous and weird.
I’m genuinely stoked for David Corenswet stepping into the blue, red, and yellow of DC Comics’s cash cow. From the recent trailers, his Clark Kent and Superman feel authentic. This iteration of the Man of Steel harkens back to the days when he felt like a hero who would inspire hope.
Corenswet’s got a lot to live up to, though, in terms of the live-action greats on film, such as George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill. Yet, they each did things that set them apart.

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch (2011)
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Twenty-five years ago, the evolution of comic book movies leaped forward. On July 14, 2000, Marvel Comics' not-so-merry band of mutants, the X-Men, made their way from the comic pages to the big screen, changing the company's cinematic fortunes and making the box office safe for the team-based superhero movies that would follow years later.
It should be noted off the top that Blade ice-skated uphill so that X-Men could run downhill to franchise-launching success. Wesley Snipes' 1998 vampire movie brought the comic-book movie genre back from the brink of extinction courtesy of the mega-bomb that was 1997's Batman & Robin. Blade was also the first Marvel Comics-derived film that didn't fall into direct-to-video hell like failed versions of Captain America and The Punisher, and Roger Corman's never-released take on the Fantastic Four.
Still, X-Men's existence was far from guaranteed even after Blade pointed a way forward for Marvel.

It’s been over a decade since ThE Cabin In The Woods flipped horror on its blood-soaked head, and yet the film feels more relevant than ever. Part satire, part homage, part full-blown creature feature, Drew Goddard’s genre-bending debut still holds up as one of the smartest horror films of the 21st century. With Joss Whedon co-writing the script and a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth leading the charge, The Cabin In The Woods managed to both love and eviscerate the genre it belonged to.

James Gunn’s Superman not only ushers in a new cinematic universe but also lands a fresh take on the timeless Man of Steel, portrayed this time by David Corenswet. But we shouldn’t forget the past heroes who donned the cape and turned the character into the icon he is today.
Over the years, Superman has been a symbol of truth and justice, and the honor of playing him on screen has been passed from one star to another. So, let’s rewind and rank all the movies that featured the last son of Krypton in the lead, based on Rotten Tomatoes’ critic score, starting with the lowest and moving upward.

Before James Gunn took over DC Studios with Peter Safran, he was offered the chance to direct a Superman movie for the Dceu. He said no.
“When I was originally offered to direct Superman back in 2018, I said no,” Gunn explained at a recent Q&a. “I was daunted by the task. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it. Also, if you remember, there was other stuff happening with Superman at the time.“
In 2018, Warner Bros. was fresh off the box office disappointment of Joss Whedon’s Justice League. It was also the last Dceu film in which Henry Cavill played Superman until his brief cameo in Black Adam. There was obviously interest in another Superman movie at the time, but it was clear that the studio wasn’t sure whether Cavill would stay on as the character.

Battlestar Galacticaactress Katee Sackhoff recently shared her candid thoughts about the problematic way she was treated during a photoshoot. A main member of the Battlestar Galactica cast, Sackhoff played Viper pilot Kara "Starbuck" Thrace throughout all four seasons of the show.
Yesterday, Sackhoff took to Instagram to share images from a photoshoot she posed in with Battlestar Galactica co-stars Tricia Helfer and Grace Park. In the post, Sackhoff described the hurt she felt after a costumer referred to her as "the big girl", saying, "I felt humiliated. Exposed. Disgusting."
The Starbuck actress continued to say that though this was the most confrontational comment on her body, it was not an isolated incident, and that this behavior speaks to the darker side of the Hollywood industry as a whole. Sackhoff concluded her post by saying that she is committed to raising her daughter to feel "powerful" — "Because I deserved better. And so does she.

The first Superman social media reactions dropped earlier today, and it's fair to say that they're mostly very positive. While the movie isn't receiving the unanimously positive response that some expected, it still sounds like filmmaker James Gunn has produced a hit.
The reviews will be more telling, but there are still plenty of intriguing details to be gleaned from these early thoughts posted to social media platforms like X and YouTube.
In this feature, we've taken a closer look at these reactions to get a better idea of what to expect from DC Studios' first Dcu movie. Where does Superman soar, and in what areas does James Gunn fail to stick the landing? Is it being overhyped, or will Superman restore faith in a genre that's suffering from superhero fatigue?
