‘The Gilded Age’ Scores A Fourth Consecutive Series High Audience With Season 3’s Penultimate Episode
Image
The Gilded Age just keeps reaching new heights as it heads toward its Season 3 finale.

The penultimate episode drew 4.6M viewers in the three days since it debuted on HBO on Sunday, setting another series record, per Warner Bros. Discovery. This is now the fourth consecutive week that the third season has managed a new series high audience.

Ahead of Sunday’s finale, the show is apparently drawing in new viewers at a record pace. The company says that The Gilded Age is currently adding viewers at a rate nearly 50% higher than in previous seasons.

Of course, newcomers are playing catch up, so much of this viewership is actually boosting the previous seasons, too. Wbd says that Season 1 viewership was up approximately 30% last week compared to the same week leading into last season’s Episode 7.

This bodes incredibly well for the show’s fourth season, as it has already received a renewal from HBO.

Netflix Oscar Winner 'Marriage Story' Used to Scare Off Wolves
Image
Here's something we didn’t have on our 2025 bingo card: Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are being used to deter wolves from attacking cattle on farms across the nation. Now that you've stopped laughing, we can tell you that it's true, as a new report from The Wall Street Journal goes into great detail to describe how the Usda is using "drone cowhands" to fend off the wolves and save livestock.

Part of the strategy involves using drones equipped with thermal cameras to expose wolves and bathe them in bright lights. Once spotted, a loudspeaker blasts all sorts of irritating noise, including the heated argument between Johansson and Driver that's featured in the Oscar-winning 2019 Netflix movie, Marriage Story. The strategy seems to be working, as after wolves killed 11 cows in the Klamath Basin of southern Oregon over a 20-day period, drones were deployed to knock that number back to just two deaths over 85 days.

‘Awards Magnet’: Kathy vs. Britt, Noah vs. Adam, and all the drama over drama — including casting!
Image
The Awards Magnet team is back to dish all the drama over drama at the 2025 Emmys.

While senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson agree on who will win most categories, they fiercely clash on others like Best Drama Series (The Pitt vs. Severance), Best Drama Guest Actress (Merritt Wever vs. Kaitlyn Dever), and Best Drama Casting (The Pitt vs. The White Lotus). Oh, the humanity!

In the lead races, they debate the closely watched contests of Kathy Bates vs. Britt Lower for Best Drama Actress, and Noah Wyle vs. Adam Scott for Best Drama Actor. Does Bates have an uphill climb because she's the only Emmy nominee from her show, Matlock? Or could Lower take her down as part of a Severance sweep? They also note how Wyle submitted the season finale of The Pitt instead of his heralded breakdown episode, while Scott put forth the absolute best option he could have,...

Emmys 2025 Voters’ Guide: Breaking Down the Early Frontrunners
Image
With a big variety of series, dozens of first-time nominees and a few shows breaking back into the race, the 77th annual Emmy Awards are set to make history — possibly in more ways than one. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in some of the main categories.

Drama series

Arguably, the most stacked race of all this year is the drama category. Although “Severance,” “The Last of Us,” “Slow Horses” and “Andor” have landed nominations in the category before, none of this year’s noms have taken home the trophy in the past. “Severance” is an early front-runner but it’s not without its huge competitors in the debuts this year. “Paradise” on Hulu racked up four nominations for its freshman year on Hulu, and “The Diplomat” caused quite a splash with its second season on Netflix, but HBO Max’s “The Pitt” (with 13 noms) remains the biggest competitor against the Apple TV+ leader.

‘The Gilded Age’ Renewed For Season 4 By HBO
Image
HBO has handed a Season 4 renewal to Julian Fellowes’ period drama The Gilded Age. The pickup comes ahead of the Season 3 finale on August 10, which will wrap some storylines while setting up more drama and intrigue.

The Gilded Age, which leans into the New York theater community for its strong — and expansive — ensemble cast, has been a true word-of-mouth phenomenon. Launching on HBO’s lower-profile Monday night, it defied the odds and drew a solid viewership to earn a Season 2 renewal. Moving to HBO’s marquee Sunday night, The Gilded Age has been on an upswing since, finding a new gear with its current third season.

Premiere-night viewing has grown for five consecutive weeks, with Episode 5 drawing a new series high of 4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers within its first three days of availability. It was accompanied by a new weekly viewership high on HBO Max. Season-to-season, The Gilded Age...

Per HBO, the fifth episode of the show’s third season reached 4 million viewers in Live+3 viewing. That beats the previous series high set just last week with episode four’s 3.8 million viewers. The show is outperforming its previous season by 20% thus far and reached its highest-ever weekly viewership on HBO Max, based on weekly viewing accounts

“The Gilded Age” had found love with critics since its debut, but did not start off strong in the ratings. It has slowly built its audience over its three seasons via word of mouth, with this season being the most popular yet by far.

The great Best Drama Series divide: Experts predict ‘The Pitt’ over front-runner ‘Severance’ for Emmy
Image
One week removed from the 2025 Emmy nominations and there are some clear trends emerging in the Gold Derby predictions. Among the marquee races, for example, Adolescence is the runaway favorite for Best Limited Series, The Studio has opened up a lead over Hacks for Best Comedy Series, and there's a substantial gap between front-runner Severance and The Pitt in Best Drama Series.

However, when it comes to that last category, a closer dive into the data shows a striking chasm between overall voters and the Gold Derby experts, which includes film critics, journalists, and historians. And it doesn't bode well for the Lumon industrial complex.

Although we're still in early days, and we still don't have a critical mass of inputs, Severance comfortably leads the combined-predictions race with 67 percent to The Pitt's 23 percent.

‘The Pitt,’ ‘The Studio,’ and ‘Adolescence’ have taken the lead in this pivotal Emmy category
Image
When it comes to predicting the Emmys, there is one group of bellwether categories worth paying close attention to. Over the past decade, a notable trend has emerged: the winners for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Casting have mirrored each other seven times; Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Casting eight times; and Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Casting nine times. That's a combined accuracy rate of 80 percent over the most recent 10-year period.

With that in mind, our gaze is fixed on the three casting races for the 2025 Emmys, where The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence are already making compelling cases as the early front-runners.

The HBO drama series from Julian Fellowes and Sonja Warfield earned a series high-viewership of 3.8 million in the U.S. with Season 3, Episode 4, which featured the reluctant nuptials of fan-favorite character Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) to Hector Vere, 5th Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb).

This marks the show’s most-watched episode to date after three days, according to internal data. HBO added that Season 3 is currently tracking 20% ahead of last season’s viewership.

As “The Gilded Age” audience grows, the network touted the series having reached its highest-ever weekly viewership on HBO Max, based on weekly viewing accounts. HBO also noted a near-60% increase in social chatter about the show week over week. The episode, titled “Marriage Is a Gamble,” generated approximately 230% more social conversation than Episode 4 of last season.

Breaking down the 2025 Emmy nominations: ‘Severance’ is boss, ‘The Penguin’ flies, and everything else we learned
Image
The announcement of the 77th Emmy Award nominations had everything we've come to expect. Snubs! Surprises! A cavalcade of guest stars from The Studio!

But, as any awards obsessive knows, while the reveal of nods may be the end of one journey, it's the start of another.

We here at Gold Derby have been following plot threads throughout the FYC season, and now with nominations in hand, the storylines for the Emmy Awards this September are juicer than ever.

Praise Kier! Severance gets a raise

The first season of Apple TV+'s work horror series certainly made a splash among viewers and the Television Academy. The freshman run scored 14 nominations, but some rough timing with two strikes in 2023 delayed Season 2. The three-year wait, however, allowed new viewers to find the show, just in time for a sophomore set of episodes that dove deeper and delivered on the promise of Season...

‘Severance’ stars Tramell Tillman and Zach Cherry are chasing Emmy history as the first Black Best Drama Supporting Actor winner
Image
In 2015, Viola Davis won the Best Drama Actress Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder, becoming the category's first Black winner. That left one acting category that had yet to produce a Black champ: Best Drama Supporting Actor. Ten years later, that remains the case — even the short-form acting categories, which were created in 2016 and consolidated into one in 2024, have awarded Black performers — but that could finally change in September with one of two Severance stars: Tramell Tillman or Zach Cherry.

Tillman and Cherry were among the seven supporting drama players tapped for nominations on Tuesday, alongside costar John Turturro, The White Lotus triumvirate of Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Rockwell, and Paradise's president, James Marsden.

Neither Tillman nor Cherry was nominated for the first season in 2022, not surprising for unknown actors on a new show. With Severance leading all comers this year with 27 Emmy nominations, there's...

‘Severance’ Dominated in Emmys Nominations — But for the Wrong Season
Image
The second season of Apple TV+ series Severance was nominated for a whopping 27 Emmy Awards on Tuesday. It is a tremendous total and the most of any show, but still not an all-time record for a drama series: Game of Thrones was nominated for 32 Emmys in 2019. You just can’t compete with dragons.

Specifically, Severance season two received nominations for — deep breath — best drama, writing, production design, casting, choreography, cinematography, directing (twice: Ben Stiller and Jessica Lee Gagné), picture editing (three times), title design, music composition, music supervision, lead actor (Adam Scott), lead actress (Britt Lower), supporting actor (three nominations: Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman and John Turturro), supporting actress (Patricia Arquette), guest actress (three nominations: Jane Alexander, Gwendoline Christie and Merritt Wever), sound editing, sound mixing, special effects and stunt performance. And here’s a cool feat: Gagné is the first woman to be nominated for both best cinematography and...

‘The Pitt’: Here are its 13 Emmy nominations — and 3 big snubs
Image
Emmy voters indeed fell into The Pitt. The HBO Max hit received 13 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actor for Noah Wyle.

Here are the categories the medical drama got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The medical drama has been the breakout hit of the year since its January debut. It quickly shot up Gold Derby's Best Drama Series odds and was in second place by the time of nominations. It's nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

Best Drama Actor: Nominated

Wyle was the last one called alphabetically, but he's been first in the odds since May, a month after Season 1 ended and about six weeks after his tour-de-force performance in the 13th episode. This is Wyle's sixth Emmy nomination and first in 26 years. He was nominated in Best Drama Supporting Actor from 1994-99 for ER.

‘Severance’ dominates Emmy field: Here’s every category where it scored a nomination — and everywhere it was snubbed
Image
The innies and the outies will be partying at the Emmys.

Severance avoided the sophomore slump in a major way, riding its meme-tastic Season 2 to an Emmy-dominating 27 nominations on Tuesday, including a bid for Best Drama Series, and nine acting nods. Entering Emmy season as the show to beat, per the Gold Derby odds, the Apple TV+ series was widely expected not only to improve upon the 14 nominations it garnered in its first season but to challenge last year's nomination champ, Shōgun. In the end, Severance eclipsed the Japanese period drama by two nods and fell just short of Game of Thrones' all-time mark of 32.

Here's a look at every category where Severance scored — and everywhere it was snubbed.

The Gilded Age season 3 episode 4 recap: Here comes the reluctant bride
Image
This post contains spoilers from The Gilded Age season 3 episode 4 from this point forward.

Last week on The Gilded Age season 3, Gladys finally (but begrudgingly) agreed to go along with her mother's plan and marry Hector, the Duke of Buckingham, after successfully meeting him. But even though "the wedding of the century" was all set, that doesn't mean that Gladys still didn't have the opportunity to back out of the big day. That's very much a concern in this week's episode.

Since agreeing to the marriage, Gladys has been holed up in her bedroom as wedding preparations begin downstairs. She refuses to leave her room as some sort of unofficial protest, but in reality, it's more likely that leaving her room and seeing everything happening will make it real. She wants to pretend for a little longer, and that's understandable.

Thankfully, Bertha gives Gladys space while remaining hopeful that everything will go according to plan.

Carrie Coon On Merritt Wever’s ‘The Gilded Age’ Debut As Bertha’s Sister: “She’s So Deeply Truthful”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This piece lightly spoils Episode 4 of The Gilded Age Season 3.

The Gilded Age Season 3 reached its halfway point Sunday night with a big episode centered around Gladys’ (Taissa Farmiga) wedding to The Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), and key in the lead-up to the nuptials is the arrival of Merritt Wever’s character Monica O’Brien.

Monica is Bertha Russell’s (Carrie Coon) sister, but Bertha does not make the fact that she has a sister known, and it’s her son Larry (Harry Richardson) who ultimately invites Monica to Gladys’ wedding, surprising Bertha, and not in a good way.

“I do believe that Bertha comes from a more working-class background than [George], one that she doesn’t like to let on,” Coon told Deadline ahead of the show’s release. “We always joke because Kelly Curran, who played my maid [Turner] in Season 1, has such beautiful hands. We’d...

Unpacking the Real History Behind ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3
Image
[Editor’s note: The following article contains some spoilers for “The Gilded Age” — and actual history.]

Welcome back to “The Gilded Age,” a vaguely historical retelling of the lavish, game-changing era of American history that followed the 19th century possibility of poor people figuring out how to exploit other poor people until they finally got rich.

But which events of this drama, written by Julian Fellowes of “Downton Abbey” fame, are based in real history? And which parts are completely made up? The answer is: it’s complicated.

An important note to consider when comparing the events of “The Gilded Age” the TV show to the events of the Gilded Age in American history is that the show timeline does not and never will match up exactly with reality. For example, the first two episodes and the Season 3 trailer contain historical storylines that actually happened in reverse order — the Charlotte Drayton (neé Astor) scandal was featured in the New York...

Sydney Sweeney Talks Packing on 30 Pounds for 'Female Rocky' Role: 'My Body Was Completely Different'
Image
Sydney Sweeney is portraying real-life fighter Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. To effectively play the part, Sweeney needed to bulk up, and she ultimately put on 30 pounds for the transformative movie role, which has been described as a "female Rocky."

Sweeney and the film's director, David Michôd, discussed her casting as Christy Martin in a new profile for W Magazine. Michôd stressed how Sweeney "trained her butt off to play the part," impressed by the physical work she had put into the film. Gaining 30 pounds and taking part in training sessions was not easy, but Sweeney also said she she "loved" every bit of it, no matter how challenging some days might have gotten.

“I loved it,” Sweeney explained. "I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours,...

Sydney Sweeney Risks Broken Nose for Christy Martin Biopic
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney says she told co-star Katy O’Brian “If you break my nose, that’s fine” while rehearsing fight scenes for the Christy Martin biopic, a comment first shared on IndieWire’s social feeds and echoed by O’Brian on Reddit. The actor has trained three-and-a-half months, lifting and kickboxing daily, and added about 30 pounds of muscle to match the six-time world champion’s build.

The film, financed by Black Bear and Anonymous Content, is directed by David Michôd from a script he wrote with Mirrah Foulkes; cameras rolled in North Carolina and wrapped last November. Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Ethan Embry and O’Brian join Sweeney onscreen, while producers include Kerry Kohansky-Roberts and Sweeney herself. Post-production insiders tell CinemaBlend the team is eyeing a 2026 festival launch while weighing U.S. distributors.

O’Brian confirmed Sweeney took real shots during takes, leaving both performers bruised but satisfying consultants who insisted the bouts look “fight-night” authentic.

Julianne Nicholson dances her way to the top of the Comedy Guest Actress Emmy predictions for ‘Hacks’
Image
Looks like Dance Mom will boogie all the way to the Emmy podium.

Julianne Nicholson, who played the joyous (and drug-addicted) character on Hacks Season 4, now leads the Best Comedy Guest Actress race, taking down longtime frontrunner Jamie Lee Curtis for The Bear, who won last year. Nicholson's Dance Mom, aka Mary Alice, was recruited by Paul W. Downs' Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla to appear on Late Night With Deborah Vance as a way for the talk show-within-a-show to gain a younger audience. At first, Jean Smart's Deborah was hesitant to let the untested woman take the stage, until she realized it would annoy Hannah Einbinder's Ava, and then all bets were off.

There's a new Hacks tonight, but I have not yet recovered from Julianne Nicholson dancing to Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" as Dance Mom in last week's episode. pic.twitter.com/SH3OPittFI

Christy Martin’s Weight Class Is the Reason Why Sydney Sweeney Had to Gain 30 lbs to Make the Biopic Look as Authentic as Possible
Image
Before the internet caught fire over bathwater headlines, Sydney Sweeney was already turning heads for a very different reason, her jaw-dropping transformation for the Christy Martin biopic.

It most definitely marked a clear shift from the image she built after her breakout as Cassie. Every red carpet look only cemented her s-x symbol status. But with Christy, she was finally given the opportunity to prove she’s got real range.

And Sweeney is thus now finally opening up about what she did to play the legendary boxer known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Turns out, she didn’t just throw a few punches and call it a day, she fully committed. That meant gaining 30 pounds to match Martin’s weight class and make the role as authentic as possible. Here is how she did it!

Sydney Sweeney’s transformation into the legend Christy Martin…

Featherweight might sound light, but in the boxing world,...

Sydney Sweeney Packs a Punch in Christy Martin Film
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney says the toughest part of her next film wasn’t stepping between the ropes—it was adding roughly 30 pounds of muscle for the chance to play trail-blazing prize-fighter Christy Martin in an untitled biopic directed by David Michôd.

In a W Magazine cover story she describes three daily training blocks—weights at dawn, two hours of kick-boxing at midday, and another hour of weights at night—that left her “so strong, like crazy strong,” even if her jeans jumped from size 23 to 27.

The physical overhaul is only part of the assignment. Michôd, who co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, calls Martin’s life “a wild mix of under-dog sports saga and personal ordeal” and says Sweeney “turned up every day with her tail wagging, ready to go”.

The film traces the West Virginia boxer’s rapid rise through the 1990s—she fought on a Mike Tyson under-card and...

‘That feeling of having a first crush’: How Zach Cherry and Merritt Wever made their ‘Severance’ marriage feel real
Image
Zach Cherry and Merritt Wever hadn’t met before filming Severance Season 2, but they already had great respect for each other as actors. That’s helpful when you’re playing a married couple. “I was a fan of her work prior to this, and I don't even know if I've ever told her this, but I was definitely a little intimidated,” Cherry tells Gold Derby in a joint interview with Wever. “I was like, ‘Oh, I better bring it.’ But I was also excited because I knew that she would be able to take care of me in these scenes, and it was a great experience. We figured it out together.”

While Wever is a two-time Emmy winner with almost 30 years of film and TV experience, Cherry just broke through with his fan-favorite Severance performance as loudmouth Mdr employee Dylan. Watching Season 1, Wever was definitely impressed by his work, and...

‘Holy sh-t, this is like “Star Wars”‘: The ultimate oral history of ‘Severance’ Season 2
Image
Three years ago, Ben Stiller and Adam Scott barnstormed Hollywood with their new Apple TV+ series about a near-future, retro-tinged dystopia where people could separate their work selves from their personal lives. The brainchild of disenchanted former cubicle warrior Dan Erickson, the show was called Severance, after the process used to split consciousnesses.

“Dan wrote this pilot script about 10 years ago that had such a relatable concept: to contemplate the idea of cutting off one part of your life. It came out of the fact that he worked at a job that he really disliked in a door factory,” Stiller recounted. “He was thinking about how could he skip past his eight or 10 hours a day of being there. That concept really resonates with people [struggling] to spend their lives doing things to make a living and [facing] parts of your life that you just don't want to deal with.”
