Daniel Roebuck
Film Review: Saint Nick of Bethlehem (2024) by Spencer Folmar and Daniel Roebuck
Daniel Roebuck
Based on a true story about Allen Smith’s life, and featuring Hollywood veterans Daniel Roebuck (who also co-directs) and Cathy Moriarty in the protagonist roles, “Saint Nick of Bethlehem” is an effort to present the concept of Santa Claus in a more down to earth, but no less heartwarming approach. Let us see how the filmmakers fared.

Nick’s life is stuck. He cannot get over neither his son’s death, nor his wife leaving him some years before, still spending time in his untouched room and wearing his wedding ring. He also has to take care of his handicapped mother while his work in his brother’s used car dealership is unsatisfying, particularly because Charlie, the owner, seems to mistrust people and is in general a miser with very few positive qualities. Things change, however, when Nick decides to embody the spirit of Santa Claus by making helping others his life goal.

Director-writer Jim Wynorski shared the news of Burr’s death on Facebook, writing that he “passed away last night [Oct. 10] in his sleep.”

Burr helmed New Line’s “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain in the 1990 installment. ‘The Red Tide Massacre’ Review
Image
Stars: Rich Sands, Michael Paré, Susan Elle, Sam Schweikert, Gina Vitori, Jackie Kay, Duane Whitaker, Elizabeth Trieu, Zack Kozlow | Written by Palmer Edward | Directed by John A. Russo, Gavin Peretti, Joseph M. Setele

On-screen text opens the film to highlight the harm caused by the 2018 red tide outbreak, as over $10 million in tourist money was lost alongside an unfathomable massacre of 2000 tons of marine life. That real-life event is used as the basis for this feature, directed by John A. Russo, Gavin Peretti, and Joseph M. Setele.

The contamination of water from red tide helps convicted cop killer Al David (Rich Sands) somehow escape from custody. An ensuing chase ends with the convict falling into the water after being shot by Sheriff Tom Fuller (Michael Paré), which results in David being infected by the polluted water and transforming into a monster.

During this, television reporter Rio Lee (Susan Elle) is...

The episode of The Test of Time covering Tales from the Hood was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

For the most part on this show, we are looking at certified classics to see if they still hold up. For the most part, anyway. Looking at you C.H.U.D. We try to look at everything from the cinematography and direction to the acting and special effects. Sometimes though the story ends up being the most important aspect of the movie. Every now and then a movie needs a reappraisal even when it wasn’t a hit at the time or seen as a classic. Look at what happened to The Thing. From box office dud (even though that has been blown out of proportion) and critical hatred to topping...

Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
Gimp Mystery in Pulp Fiction Finally Solved by Quentin Tarantino
Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction was released back in 1994, but fans still talk about the many unsolved mysteries left behind by the legendary movie. Many continue to wonder what exactly was inside Marcellus Wallace's briefcase, while others are curious what the real story was with the man known as the Gimp. For the latter, that particular mystery has finally been solved as Tarantino has offered his storyline explanation for who this guy really is, as well as what ultimately became of him after his controversial scene.

In the movie, Marcellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) chases Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) into a gun shop where the two are taken captive by the owner and a friend. The duo proceed to sexually assault Marcellus, leaving another man clad entirely in leather bondage gear to keep watch over a tied-up Butch. Using his strength as a professional boxer, Butch escapes from his restraints, prompting the Gimp...

Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
Quentin Tarantino Clears Up a Big Mystery About the Craziest ‘Pulp Fiction’ Scene
Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
Who is the Gimp? It’s a question that’s long been asked by “Pulp Fiction” fans. One of the signature scenes in Quentin Tarantino’s Palme d’Or winner finds Butch (Bruce Willis) and Marsellus (Ving Rhames) being tied up and held prisoner in the basement of a pawnshop owner named Maynard (Duane Whitaker). The storeowner is accompanied by his security guard Zed (Peter Greene) and the Gimp, a mute character dressed head to toe in a leather bondage suit. Tarantino’s script doesn’t provide any information about the Gimp, which is why diehard “Pulp Fiction” fans have long wondered who he is, where he came from, and what happened to him after Butch escaped and knocked him out with a punch.

An interview with Tarantino published online by Empire magazine this month solves the mystery of the Gimp, as the director responds to a fan question about...

‘Hobgoblins’ Review (Vinegar Syndrome)
Stars: Tom Bartlett, Paige Sullivan, Steven Boggs, Tamara Clatterbuck, Duane Whitaker, Daran Norris, Billy Frank, Jeffrey Culver | Written and Directed by Rick Sloane

As someone who grew up haunting video stores throughout the late 80s and well into the 90s, director Rick Sloane was something of an icon. You see I was one of those teenagers who loved to rent any and all T&A comedies I could lay my hands on, and Sloane was the man behind Vice Academy and its six, yes six(!) sequels. Why Vice Academy? Well my other love at the time was horror movies, and in particular those featuring scream queens such as Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Brinke Stevens and Monique Gabrielle… and Vice Academy – and its immediate sequel – starred the one and only Ms. Quigley – it was, at least for me at the time, kismet: Linnea Quigley and T&A comedy? Sounded like heaven...

'Get the Gimp': Breaking Down 'Pulp Fiction's Most Notorious Scene
Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction has become so canonized as a modern classic, it's easy to forget how transgressive it was on its release twenty years ago. But when Quentin Tarantino's film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1994, it thrilled and shocked the audience in equal measures.

'Pulp Fiction,' A to Z

No scene upended more expectations than the pawn shop sequence (Spoiler Alert — if you haven't ever seen the movie, this is the moment when you should stop reading and go do that. Really! It's streaming on Netflix!

Is 'Bad Ass' For Real?
Today, to close out 2011, I bring you a movie mystery. And no, it's not a movie that's a mystery; it's a mystery involving a movie…maybe.

Last week, a teaser trailer for something called Bad Ass snuck onto the Internet. It stars Danny Trejo, Charles S. Dutton and Ron Perlman, and word is that it's based on a video that went viral last year.

The story goes like this. In February 2010, a 67-year-old Vietnam vet named Thomas Bruso (aka Epic Beard Man) got into an unsavory fight on a bus in Oakland, California, and the whole thing was caught on video, posted on YouTube and became a sensation within hours. Now comes a movie based on this video. Hey, why not, right?

Hollywood makes movies based on amusement park rides and board games — why not make a film based on a video? All that needs to be done is write...

Corn Doesn’t Grow In The Desert – A Review Of Children Of The Corn: Genesis
As you can tell just by watching it, “Children of the Corn: Genesis” was obviously written as a different film, and then adapted for the series to cash in on the franchise. Most of the time this spells trouble, and it still does at some level here, but what I wasn’t prepared for was to actually enjoy the movie. The story follows a young married couple stranded in the California desert. A quick walk in an attempt to locate a telephone brings them across a strange pastor, and his Russian wife. This seem to be a bit odd right off of the bat, but the couple has no choice but to stay overnight until a ride into town arrives the next day. Soon it becomes apparent that an unseen force doesn’t want the couple to leave.

As mentioned above, my main problem with this movie is that it...

New stills for Children of the Corn: Genesis
The only thing scarier in Nebraska outside of a disappointing Cornhusker football season, is those little religious bastards from Children of the Corn. Coming to DVD and VOD August 30th, is the latest chapter in the long-running horror franchise in Children of the Corn: Genesis, and here’s some new stills from the flick:

Tim and Allie seek shelter in a remote desert compound after becoming lost and stranded. A strange Manson-like character, Preacher (Drago), reluctantly allows them inside with strict orders to be gone by morning and not wander “where you are not invited.” At first, Preacher and his mail-order wife Oksana (Nedeljakova) deny the faint screams and cries that emanate from one of the crumbling outbuildings. When Allie sneaks outside to investigate, she discovers that she and Tim have stumbled onto a bizarre cult worshiping an entity that may — or may not — dwell inside a haunted little boy.

Exclusive - Steven Goldmann Talks the Future of Trailer Park of Terror, DeadFellas and More
In May of 2007 (just prior to the nation’s economic collapse), this writer visited the set of the Bogner Entertainment and Trailer Park Partners production Trailer Park of Terror, a Southern-fried fright flick directed by country-music video director-turned feature filmmaker Steven Goldmann. Produced by Jonathan Bogner and Ralph Singleton (Pet Semetary) and based on the Imperium Comics of the same name, Trailer Park of Terror premiered the following year at Slamdance ’08, and was released to DVD that October via Summit Entertainment.

Starring Lew Temple and Priscilla Barnes (The Devil’s Rejects) and Nichole Hiltz, Duane Whitaker (Feast), Ed Corbin and Michelle Lee (among others), Trailer Park of Terror, regardless of its playfully sadistic EC Comics-vibe and inspired makeup designs by Todd Tucker, didn’t cause the waves its producers had predicted, and due to such, unfortunately derailed the planned feature franchise and television and comic book series. Perplexing, given the gonzo cocktail of sex,...

Down on the Albino Farm
Horror cinema has for some time mined folklore for inspiration, whether it be Eastern Europe’s belief in vampirism or Mexico’s love affair with the goat-sucking chupacabra. American filmmakers Sean McEwen and Joe Anderson, whose feature Albino Farm hits DVD September 22 from Mti Home Video, followed suit in crafting their backwoods fright feature.

“One of the original ideas we kept coming back to,” McEwen tells Fango on the set, “was based on an actual legend specific to southern Missouri and the Ozarks about the ‘albino farm.’ There was a good foundation for a story, but it definitely needed a lot of meat put on its bones, which also gave us the opportunity to really take the creative ball and run with it.”

To help explain the urban legend from which the film’s storyline is derived (while driving to southern Missouri on a “travel day” following the previous evening’s lightning strike,...
