How Christopher Nolan Honored Heath Ledger’s Joker in a Movie He Almost Didn’t Make
Image
The Dark Knight Rises made over $1 billion at the box office, but living up to The Dark Knight was a huge challenge. That movie is often called one of the best American films of the 21st century, so expectations were sky-high.

One big issue for fans was that Batman spends most of the film injured, dealing with a broken back and a bad knee. While Bruce Wayne’s struggle to recover and fight again is a classic Batman story, many viewers felt it didn’t work well on screen. After all, a Batman movie where Batman isn’t really Batman for most of the time feels strange, unless the focus is on the Joker, maybe.

Christopher Nolan, the director, was well aware of the shadow The Dark Knight cast. In fact, he hesitated to even make a third film. When he finally decided to complete the trilogy, Nolan chose to...

How ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Secretly Honored Heath Ledger’s Joker Without Saying His Name
Image
The Dark Knight Rises is probably one of the most talked-about billion-dollar movies ever made—right up there with Avatar. It made over $1 billion at the box office, but it faced huge challenges living up to The Dark Knight, which is often called one of the best American films of the 21st century. One big reason some fans had mixed feelings was that Batman himself spends most of the movie dealing with injuries like a broken back or a bad knee.

While Bruce Wayne’s struggle to heal and fight is a classic part of Batman’s story, many felt it didn’t work well on screen. After all, a Batman movie where Batman is mostly sidelined feels off, unless it’s all about the Joker, maybe.

Christopher Nolan, the director, knew how hard it would be to follow The Dark Knight. He even hesitated to make a third film.

Trouble Man Review: Michael Jai White Revives a Genre
Image
Michael Jai White’s Trouble Man introduces Jaxen, a private investigator who feels like a figure teleported directly from 1970s cinema into the streets of modern Atlanta. He is a man of quiet confidence, immense physical capability, and a clear moral code, an archetype familiar to global audiences yet distinctly rooted in American cultural history.

The film begins with a premise that could be pulled from any classic detective novel: a beautiful R&b singer has vanished, and her powerful record executive boss wants her found. This simple assignment quickly pulls Jaxen into a world of street gangs, corporate deceit, and personal vendettas.

The film operates as an affectionate revival of the blaxploitation genre, playing its conventions with sincerity and a self-aware charm. It avoids the path of parody, choosing instead to present a straightforward, modern chapter in a long-standing cinematic tradition. The movie invites the audience to appreciate its...

‘Trouble Man’ Review: Michael Jai White Is Superfine to the Ladies and Super-Harsh to Baddies in a Fun, Disposable Action Throwback
Image
Michael Jai White has been in a lot of film and TV projects over the last 35 years or so. But probably most beloved amongst his fans is “Black Dynamite,” the 2009 sendup of 1970s blaxploitation movies he conceived, co-wrote and starred in. That it remains a favorite for him too is made obvious by “Trouble Man,” which isn’t a spoof but a relatively straight-faced replay of that vintage genre’s conventions, with White (also directing now) as the supercool hero constantly besting bad guys via martial arts and gunplay, while simultaneously fending off the attentions of various beautiful women.

Bearing no formal relation to the actual 1972 blaxploitation feature of the same title, which is best remembered for its Marvin Gaye score, White’s “Trouble Man” is full of such winking references to vintage African-American pop culture. But referentiality is as far as this semi-tongue-in-cheek endeavor goes; it does a lot...

Tyler Perry Confirms New Sequel To $116M Comedy Franchise, Original Cast Expected To Return
Image
Tyler Perry may not be the most consistent director in terms of critical reception, but he has had an incredibly impressive rate of production. A multi-hyphenate talent who has served as producer, writer, director, and actor — and sometimes all on the same project — he has an impressive filmography that mostly includes comedies.

Perry is best known for his work on the Madea franchise. This began with the character's appearance in The Diary of A Mad Black Woman, a 2005 film that Perry wrote and acted in. Most recently, that franchise continued with the 2025 Netflix release Madea's Destination Wedding.

Perry's output has been even more prominent in the last few years because of his deal with Netflix. The streamer formed this multi-year partnership with Perry in October 2023, which would allow Perry to produce multiple movies for the streamer.

This deal has been pretty successful for the creator. His movie Straw, which came out this year,...

Tyler Perry Confirms ‘Why Did I Get Married 3’ and Teases Original Cast’s Return
Image
Tyler Perry is asking, “Why did I get married again?”

To clarify, the movie mogul isn’t actually wed, but he’s finished the script for the long-awaited third movie in the “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise, which has been rumored to continue in recent years.

On Wednesday, Perry posted the cover page of the “table draft” version of the script for the movie, seemingly titled “Why Did I Get Married Again?” with the caption “I’m just gonna sit this right here!” He also conspicuously tagged the franchise’s main cast: Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Jill Scott and Janet Jackson. Perry also stars as one of the eight college friends who wrestle with challenges in their marriage during their annual reunion.

Arrow Releases Zombie Punks, Killer Comics and Asian Horror in October
Image
It may seem hot and summery, but it’s now less than 100 days until Halloween, and Arrow Video is ushering in the season with a formidable slate of genre releases. October’s drop features a high-concept comic book adaptation, a punk-fuelled zombie cult hit, two trailblazing Asian horror anthologies, an apocalyptic Carpenter classic and a ferocious revenge thriller from the heart of 1980s New York.

Leading the pack is Spawn, newly restored in 4K and arriving in Limited Edition Uhd and Blu-ray formats. The 1997 adaptation of Todd McFarlane’s comic book casts Michael Jai White as a betrayed Black Ops assassin reborn as a hell-bound antihero. Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé and produced by the teams behind Blade and The Crow, Spawn returns with both its Theatrical and Director’s Cuts, alongside new interviews, featurettes and collector’s packaging.

Dan O’Bannon’s cult classic The Return of the Living Dead also receives the 4K treatment.

Image
Scott Adkins takes his high-flying kicks and is forced to use them the fighting ring again, but it turns out to be in an unlikely place… at a Pow camp behind enemy lines during World War II. The action star developed the story for Prisoner of War, which was previously called Death March. Independent distributor, Well Go USA, picked up the rights for the film and has now released the trailer. Adkins is likely best known for his character Yuri Boyka from the Undisputed sequels, but the martial artist has also popped up in films like Doctor Strange and John Wick: Chapter 4.

Adkins’ story was penned by scribe Marc Clebanoff. In the story, per Variety, “a British airman washes ashore after being ejected from his plane and becomes a prisoner in a Japanese-run Pow camp. While waiting to join the infamous Bataan death march, the airman is tortured by the...

Hitman Action Comedy 'Hostile Takeover' Trailer w/ Michael Jai White
Image
"I just needed a safe space to work through my feelings." Quiver has unveiled the full trailer for an action comedy titled Hostile Takeover, another of these dime-a-dozen junk action flicks. It's heading to VOD in August in a few weeks if anyone wants to give it a go. The movie is about Pete, a professional hitman, who faces a group of assassins when a crime syndicate boss suspects disloyalty because he goes to "Workaholics Anonymous" meetings. Michael Jai White stars at hitman Pete Strykyr, along with Aimee Stolte, Aleks Paunovic, and Dawn Olivieri. Hostile Takeover is described as a "hyper-stylized, kinetic thrill ride full of savage action, mystery and humor. Think John Wick meets Crank, with a dash of Burn After Reading – a brutal, wildly entertaining examination of burnout, betrayal & what happens when the city's most efficient killer decides to find a littler inner peace... and ends up starting a war.

‘Off The Grid’ Movie Review: Josh Duhamel Leads A Serviceable Rambo-esque Action Thriller
Image
“One-man army” films are in vogue right now, but this is not a new trend. When Westerns were at the peak of their popularity, you had several stories of a highly trained gunslinger who had been wronged in some way out for blood, with actors like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne at the helm. Back in the ‘80s and the ‘90s, action stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Jean-Claude Van Damme would headline movies about a guy who was out to get revenge for personal, professional, or nationalistic reasons. And while mainstream cinema refused to use such narratives for a while until Keanu Reeves became John Wick, that trend was kept alive in the direct-to-video releases by immensely talented artists like Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, and Michael Jai White. Recently, well-known faces like Orlando Bloom, Tom Hardy, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Jennifer Lopez...

The Best American Martial Arts Movies
Image
It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. It’s tough to compete with the likes of the Shaw Brothers and the drunken master known as Jackie Chan. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States decades ago, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen. Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo,...

The Correct Order To Watch Jean-Claude Van Damme's Universal Soldier Movies
Image
Throughout humanity's long, sad, and seemingly endless history of making war, there has existed a naggingly evergreen question about making the perfect soldier. In a pre-technological age, this question was largely psychological, yet the advent of advanced tech started to open up more possibilities, as well as lead to more dead-ends. To wit: while fully replacing human soldiers with robots would initially seem ingenious, it could also lead to things like malfunctions and the absence of human reasoning and ingenuity. Yet a robot, loaded with a pre-made algorithm, doesn't need to be retrained, and isn't susceptible to the many vulnerabilities a human being is. Surely, there must be a way to combine the two.

Roland Emmerich's 1992 sci-fi action film "Universal Soldier" took this recurring military frustration and turned it into thoughtful genre entertainment. Although Emmerich and his writers (with his old filmmaking partner Dean Devlin chief among them) knew...

Wesley Snipes & Ving Rhames' Boxing Drama 'Undisputed' Is Now Streaming Free
Image
One of Blade star Wesley Snipes’ most underrated movies is now free to stream. The actor and martial artist, who is best recognized for his role as the Marvel vampire hunter, a role he reprized in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, puts in a reliably charismatic performance as a boxer behind bars in the action/boxing/prison drama, Undisputed. You can now discover the movie without spending a dime, and it deserves a second round.

Released back in 2002, Undisputed is written, produced and directed by Walter Hill, the filmmaker behind the likes of the nightmarish ‘70s thriller The Warriors and producer of the Alien franchise. The movie stars Ving Rhames as George "The Iceman" Chambers and Wesley Snipes as Monroe "Undisputed" Hutchen, a pair of fighters who find themselves facing off while serving time behind bars. The rest of the cast features several genre favorites, including Peter Falk, Michael Rooker,...

Mickey Rourke's 'The Commando' Is a Streaming Hit on Starz
Image
Mickey Rourke has made some bad movies, but one of his worst rated films is finding some unexpected love after climbing up the Starz streaming chart. In fact, only the mighty presence of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage has kept the universally panned The Commando off the top spot.

Released in 2022, The Commando is described as an “edge-of-the-seat” action thriller, which sees an elite DEA agent – played by Michael Jai White – discover that there is a stash of $3 million hidden away in his home, and a newly released criminal (Rourke) and his violent gang want it back. It sounds like a cliché, walks like a cliché, talks like a cliché, and surprisingly was buried under a pile of cliché-filled, appalling reviews.

Action movies need to deliver fist-fights, car chases, explosions and link them all together with a story that makes only the barest of logical sense.

Creature Commandos Fans Should Watch This Underrated Adult Swim Cartoon
Image
Recently, the DC Universe — DC Comics' newly retooled cinematic universe — officially came to life with the edgy adult cartoon Creature Commandos. Despite starring DC characters who most people have never even heard of, the series was such a well-made success that its second season was greenlit almost as soon as the first season finale aired. With Creature Commandos Season 2 still a long way off, fans have no other choice but to look to other adult cartoons to pass the time.

Enter Black Dynamite, Adult Swim's animated adaptation of the cult parody movie of the same name from roughly a decade ago. At first glance, Creature Commandos and Black Dynamite have next to nothing in common, let alone crossover appeal between their respective target audiences. After all, one is based on a superhero team's comics, and the other is a parody of the '70s. However, the opposite couldn't be more true.
