Jeff Probst would be lying if he said he didn’t know Mike White being cast on the 50th season of Survivor was going to cause such a commotion. Still, the host and executive producer admits he “was a little surprised at how much attention” the news drew in when CBS unveiled its slate of returning players.

“The thing that’s most interesting about Mike playing for the second time is there is no hiding that he is the biggest writer, director, show creator in the world right now, and he wanted to come back and play Survivor,” Probst tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So I can understand why people had a reaction.”

Laura Dern delivers a fearless performance as Amy Jellicoe, a corporate executive whose nervous-breakdown–turned–philosophical awakening inspires her to become an agent of change. Although critics loved the series, there was a running joke in the press that it was the show no one was watching. Last year, HBO's The Gilded Age made a major breakthrough at the Emmys by scoring six nominations, including Best Drama Series, for its second season. The third season is currently airing and won't be eligible until next year's Emmys. However, its presence could still be helpful for star Carrie Coon as she contends for her supporting role in another prestige HBO drama, The White Lotus.

This marks Coon's third Emmy nomination, after Fargo in 2017 and The Gilded Age in 2024. On the third season of Mike White's anthology series, Coon plays Laurie Duffy, a recently divorced corporate lawyer from New York City, who, along with her two longtime friends (Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan), reunite on a girls' trip to Thailand.

Most of those revolve around creator Sam Levinson's allegedly odd behavior, the rampant drug abuse in the series, and the excessive nudity involving mainly Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie, an insecure and sexy blonde who falls for her best friend's boyfriend.

Undeniably, this is the role that catapulted the young actress into worldwide stardom. She's been in the zeitgeist ever since, appearing in various supporting roles left and right, including in Tarantino's beloved "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" and Mike White's extremely popular "The White Lotus," as well as starring in features practically built on her potent screen presence, like "Reality" and "Nocturne.

The Primetime Emmys have released their nominations for the 2025 ceremony, and the nominees are certainly interesting. This year was extremely impressive and fulfilling for television, with some projects continuing their stories and others starting new ones. The 55-year-old Emmy-winning star reunited with his Enlightened co-creator and co-star Laura Dern for smoothies and snacks at Sun Life Organics on Thursday afternoon (July 17) in Brentwood, Calif.

For their outing, Laura, 58, wore a black blazer over a gray T-shirt paired with jeans while Mike sported a navy T-shirt and brown shorts.

The battle for television’s most prestigious awards just got even fiercer. The Television Academy has announced the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, which will be held on September 14, 2025, in California.

Leading the pack with an impressive 27 nominations is the Apple TV+ dystopian sci-fi thriller Severance. Close behind are Colin Farrell’s crime drama The Penguin, which has 24 nominations, followed by satirical comedy The Studio and dark comedy The White Lotus, tied at 23 nominations each.

It's been a few hours and The White Lotus star Jason Isaacs still hasn’t digested the fact that he’s an Emmy nominee. “It’s bewildering,” Isaacs tells Gold Derby. “It’s slightly surreal and lovely, and lovely that so many other The White Lotus people are in the same boat with me because obviously the common denominator is [creator and director] Mike White’s brilliant writing. It’s why we’ve all been noticed.”

The nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series is a career-first for Isaacs, who plays wealthy Southerner Timothy Ratliff on the HBO hit’s buzzy third season. As a businessman whose shady dealings are catching up to him, Isaacs’ Timothy goes on an turmoil-fueled inner journey and (just barely) makes it out alive. “It’s what you want as an actor,” Isaacs says. “You want a challenge, and I guess if I’m really honest I was scared.

The 2025 Emmy nominations were announced today, and with them came plenty of rage-worthy snubs, The Bear getting comedy noms again and an unsurprising clean sweep from Severance. But while Apple TV+’s crown jewel might be its Sunday-scaries-drama (which picked up 27 nominations), it was far from the only show on the streaming service that received recognition.

Discovery’s HBO Max was the most nominated platform at the 2025 Emmy Awards with 142 noms, paced by HBO’s limited series The Penguin (24), The White Lotus Season 3 (23) and The Last of Us Season 2 (16) as well as HBO Max originals Hacks Season 4 (14) and The Pitt Season 1 (13). This marks the most Emmy nominations for HBO in a single year, topping its previous high mark of 137 in 2019, before the launch of streamer HBO Max.

Don't be surprised if Season 4 of The White Lotus suddenly changes locations to Fiji. Even though the next season of the hit series is reportedly moving back to Europe, during a recent interview with Variety, HBO Max CEO and content chairman Casey Bloys revealed that series' creator Mike White's creative process is influenced by the places he visits — and currently the writer is filming the all-star 50th season of reality competition series Survivor in the South Pacific.

During the interview, Bloys commented that chances are that White is "observing his fellow contestants and taking notes and getting ideas" while he films Survivor's landmark season and that the great thing about the showrunner is that he "always has the show in his head worked out." On Tuesday, the third season of the HBO series created by Mike White — who also directs, writes and executive produces the show — earned 23 Emmy nominations. Season three of White Lotus, which centers around guests’ stay at a luxury resort, ran for seven weeks earlier this year, with the season finale airing on Sunday, April 6. This latest season starred Walton Goggins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aimee Lou Wood, Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Natasha Rothwell, Sam Nivola, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jon Gries and Sam Rockwell.

When the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, July 15, there was a lot to celebrate for HBO's critically acclaimed, fan-favorite anthology series The White Lotus. Among The White Lotus season 3's 23 nominations was the expected but no less warranted Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nomination for Carrie Coon. The Primetime Emmy nominations arms race shifted back in HBO and HBO Max’s favor on Tuesday morning, with the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned platform’s historically dominant slate commanding 142 nominations across 23 originals.

With particularly strong showings for limited series The Penguin (24), drama The White Lotus (23) and comedy Hacks (14), HBO and HBO Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys hopped on the phone to dig into some of the surprises (two nominations for the outgoing Somebody Somewhere), smaller showings (House of the Dragon) and offer up some updates on a slew of nominated originals (The Penguin, The White Lotus, The Pitt) and 2025 offerings like the new season of The Gilded Age and the upcoming The Chair Company. He also had a very humble response to the suggestion of playing himself in a future season of Apple TV+’s The Studio.

The White Lotus notoriously takes a long time to film. The process is said to take seven months just to film, and that doesn’t include pre-production or post-production time.

Casey was asked where Mike is in the season four process, to which he told The Wrap, “Mike pitched a little — I know the general outline of what Season 4 is going to be. He’s going to be scouting, seeing what location he gets inspired by, and then giving us more of an update of what he’s thinking, but it’s percolating in his head.”

Season three wrapped up earlier this year, and Mike went on to film Survivor 50 this summer. So, it looks like the work on season four is just getting going!

It was quite a fine morning for Casey Bloys, the HBO and Max content chairman/CEO who saw his combined platform pull off 142 Emmy nominations — a new best for the company. Bloys said he had been prepped by his head of awards, Austin O’Malia, for several different outcomes, “and he was feeling good. So if he feels good, I feel good.”

And that bore itself out with 24 nominations for “The Penguin” (the most of any limited/anthology series this year), 23 nods for “The White Lotus,” 16 for “The Last of Us,” 14 for “Hacks” and 13 for “The Pitt.”

It was never a question whether the fungal apocalypse drama would receive a series bid, since Season 1 scored 24 nominations and won eight trophies in 2023. “Severance” and “The Studio” got more Emmy nominations than anybody expected, “The White Lotus” didn’t receive quite as many acting noms as usual and fewer new shows made it into the top Emmy categories than at any time in the last five years.

Those were some of the lessons from Tuesday’s announcement of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, which were announced by Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song on Tuesday morning in North Hollywood. With the number of submissions declining for the second consecutive year, many major categories had fewer nominees than usual, but that didn’t stop voters from dropping in a handful of surprises and from showing just how much they loved the second season of “Severance,” the runaway leader in nominations with 27, three more than last year’s big winner, “Shōgun,” received on its way to breaking the Emmy record for wins in a single year.

It’s clear Emmy voters remain fans of the HBO drama, which saw another impressive showing in this year’s nominations. Eight of the show's stars received nominations as did creator Mike White.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The HBO series, which swept 10 Emmys in its first season and picked up five more in Season 2, has once again been nominated for Best Drama Series. At the time of the nominations, it was ranked third on Gold Derby’s odds list, behind Severance and The Pitt. It will go up against Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance and Slow Horses.

Best Drama Supporting Actor: Nominated

The show had nine contenders in the supporting actor category, but only three earned nominations: Walton Goggins as Rick, Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, and Sam Rockwell as Frank. These three consistently ranked among Gold Derby’s top five contenders, with Goggins leading the pack.

While The White Lotus didn’t sweep the Supporting Actor/Actresses in a Drama Series category, as was at times predicted, the HBO powerhouse did match its Season 2 Emmy nomination tally with 23 this year, bringing its to-date total to 66 with 15 overall wins — with more potentially in store at the ceremony to be held Sept. 14.

Once again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, performers Jason Isaacs, Scott Glenn and Aimee Lou Wood scored their first-ever Emmy nominations this year.

For Supporting Actress in a Drama, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Natasha Rothwell were also honored, with the latter seeing a repeat nomination for her role as Belinda, which she originated back in Season 1. They, along with Wood, face one performer each from Paradise, The Pitt and Severance (Patricia Arquette).
