The Jerusalem Film Festival has issued a statement as it pushes on with its 42nd edition against the backdrop of a deepening Palestinian humanitarian crisis and Israeli hostage situation in Gaza, and less than a month after the 12-day Israel-Iran war.

CNN’s Jake Tapper spent part of this Sunday morning speaking to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan about the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which impacts a population of over 2 million people, approximately half of whom are under 18.

Tapper acknowledged that Israel’s assault against Gaza is “a different situation” than Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but asked: “But cutting off supplies, cutting off heat, cutting off water to civilians. What’s the difference?”

Sullivan replied, “Well, first, thank you for saying that Israel is not Russia, because Israel is not Russia–” to which the CNN host interjected, “Civilians are civilians, Jake! Civilians are civilians!”

L.A.-based director Guy Nattiv is back in his native Israel with new film Golda starring Helen Mirren as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir.

The drama, focused on Meir’s controversial handling of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, opened the Jerusalem Film Festival on July 13, with Mirren squeezing in an appearance just hours before the SAG-AFTRA strike was declared.

The picture originally world premiered at the Berlinale in February, but for Nattiv the Israeli premiere is equally if not more momentous.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot by a lone gunman while on the campaign trail in the Japanese city of Nara Friday morning. The unprecedented shooting comes as Japan gears up for its House of Councillors election, which takes place this Sunday.

The United States Football League, which challenged the NFL’s dominance in the 1980s before collapsing after just three seasons, will attempt a comeback in the spring of 2022.

Fox Sports has signed on as official broadcast partner for the Usfl and also owns a minority equity stake in the company that is resuscitating the league. In March, Fox was among the longtime media partners of the NFL signing a long-term renewal to continue carrying Sunday afternoon games. It is surrendering Thursday night rights to Amazon after this fall’s run of games.

“The relaunch of the Usfl is a landmark day for football fans and Fox Sports,” Fox Sports CEO and executive producer Eric Shanks said. “Football is in our DNA and the return of this innovative and iconic league is a fantastic addition to our robust slate of football programming.”

The Usfl is back after a 37-year absence. The United States Football League announced on Thursday it will relaunch next spring.

The original Usfl ran for three years from 1983-1985 and was notable for competing with the NFL for star athletes, attracting the likes of Herschel Walker, Reggie White, Steve Young and Jim Kelly. Former president Donald Trump was also an owner of one of the franchises, the New Jersey Generals.

Fox Sports will be the league’s broadcast partner, giving it two pro football franchises. Fox is also a minority investor in the company that owns the Usfl. The rebooted league will feature at least eight teams and “retains rights to key original team names.”

When it launches, it will compete with the XFL, which itself is relaunching (for the second time) next spring under new co-owners Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dany Garcia.

A judge overseeing a mediation in a consolidated multidistrict lawsuit involving some 4,500 National Football League ex-players has announced that a $765 million settlement has been reached. The judge has hailed it as "historic."
