Superman Returns Revisted: A Visual Stunner Released in the Wrong Time
Image
It’s easy to forget that the vast majority of Superman movies have struggled to move the needle. While the original Richard Donner Superman put comic book movies on the map, the Christopher Reeve-led sequels were bad. While Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is fondly remembered, the stories behind the scenes of the next two movies turned into a powder keg in the discourse. Superman Returns is not without its own controversies.

Directed by person non grata Bryan Singer and starring Kevin Spacey before he was accused of sexual harassment, many have chosen to ignore a title they were not too fond of to begin with. However, with the release of James Gunn’s Superman, it’s time to revisit the movie that is the closest we’ve seen to Gunn’s vision.

Superman Returns Plot

After spending five years investigating what happened to Krypton, Kal-El (Brandon Routh) returns to Earth.

‘Superman Returns’: THR’s 2006 Review
Image
On June 28, 2006, Warner Bros. brought back Superman, this time with X-Men director Bryan Singer at the helm of the franchise and Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel. The film, Superman Returns, collected $391 million at the global box office but didn’t a sequel and DC went in a new direction after the title’s release. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below

The Superman who returns in Superman Returns is a different Man of Steel than we are used to seeing. In Superman: The Movie, the film by director Richard Donner in 1978, the late Christopher Reeve rescued the iconic superhero from high camp with the sincerity and warmth of his acting. His Superman was a romantic charmer. Director Bryan Singer positions this new film as a sequel to Donner’s film, and his Superman — played with winning fortitude by newcomer Brandon Routh — is less a Man of Steel than a Man of Heart.

James Marsden's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
James Marsden's best movies and TV shows highlight his career of versatile projects and winning performances. The American actor began his career in the mid-1990s with small roles and bit parts before finding more success with notable parts in Gossip and Disturbing Behavior before finding his breakout role in one of the early superhero movie successes, X-Men. From there, Marsden continued to find roles that showcased different sides of his talents, from the charming romantic lead to the villain to a comedic role.

Marsden refused to allow himself to be typecast into one type of role, constantly shifting the audience's perception of him as an actor. He was able to join big franchises in supporting roles, stand out on hit television shows, and even found acclaim playing himself. With a steady career that has lasted decades, Marsden shows no signs of slowing down, but his best movies and...

10 Disney Movies That Divided Fans
Image
Walt Disney Pictures has been responsible for some of the greatest children’s movies ever, although the studio's committed fan base is often divided. While some Disney films are undisputed classics beloved by all, there are some releases that audiences have taken issue with, whether due to problematic depictions, outdated stereotypes, or questionable creative decisions. When a studio has so many treasured properties in its catalog, it’s no surprise that fans disagree on many issues.

Even the best Disney movies have divided fans as they debate the merits, themes, and meaning behind cherished animated and live-action releases. Disney’s recent output has led some viewers to wish for a return to the glory days of the Disney Renaissance, while others are more than pleased with the modern CGI-centric approach of the studio's output in the 21st century. As a studio founded more than 100 years ago, it’s no surprise...

10 Movies Disney Should Remake Using The Muppets
Image
It's no secret that a large portion of Disney's revenue in recent years has come from rebooting earlier films. From Cinderella to The Lion King and beyond, Disney has been producing live-action remakes of tons of their classic animated films, with even more of these projects currently in the works. However, one must begin to wonder whether straightforward, live-action recreations are really the most effective way for Disney to bring these classic stories back to life. With many of the live-action remakes garnering less-than-stellar reviews, one must start to question whether Disney should consider exploring an alternate path.

Fortunately, one Disney property could open many doors for the company. Back in 2004, Disney made a deal in which they received ownership of the beloved group of colorful performers known as the Muppets. With audiences growing tired of live-action adaptations that don't do much to enhance the original stories, Disney ought to...

“It’s like killing Captain America at the start of Civil War”: Marvel Fans Will Never Forgive One Patrick Stewart X-Men Movie for Killing off a Major Mutant Hero in an Act of Blatant Source Material Defiance
Image
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fox’s X-Men franchise was considered the greatest superhero film ever. The series gave a new dimension to the genre, which studios did not take seriously until then. The Patrick Stewart-starrer often gained positive reviews for its action, faithfulness to the source material, and performances.

However, one film from the franchise seemingly began its downfall as it was negatively received by fans. X-Men: The Last Stand is often regarded as one of the worst in the franchise due to its unfocused screenplay. Fans still seem to be annoyed at the film for killing off Scott Summers in the first few minutes of the film.

Spoilers for "Wish" follow.

The villains from Walt Disney Animation's feature films have traditionally been so striking and scary that the company has thought to separate them into their own brand. The brand tends to focus on Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) from 1959's "Sleeping Beauty," Cruella de Vil (Betty Lou Gerson) from 1961's "One Hundred and One Dalmatians," Ursula the Sea Witch (Pat Caroll) from 1989's "The Little Mermaid," the Evil Queen (Lucille La Verne) from 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," Captain Hook (Hans Conreid) from 1953's "Peter Pan," Hades (James Woods) from 1997's "Hercules," and Dr. Facilier (Keith David) from 2009's "The Princess and the Frog."

Occasionally, one might find Gaston (Richard White) from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast" in the mix or Chernabog from 1940's "Fantasia." These characters are all memorable for their scary designs, their misguided lust for power or destruction, their resentment, their hatred of the world,...

Two Assistant Directors Create Strike Fund For Production Assistants: “They Have Been Forgotten”
Image
A pair of former production assistants-turned-assistant directors have created a nonprofit in hopes of providing financial aid to PAs who’ve been put out of work due to the strike.

Katie Hacker and Andrea Block argue that most PAs don’t qualify for most of the strike relief that’s available out there — not to mention how they are already the lowest paid crew members on TV and film projects. Once work resumes, the women argue, Pa paychecks will be much smaller than those of the rest of the crew — making it harder for them to recover from the strike.

That’s why Hacker and Block formed the Go for PAs Alliance in July.

“Our entire industry is in this together, and we feel strongly that the little guys should not be ignored in this conversation,” the women, both of whom went through the DGA training program, said in a statement.

‘Chicago Pd’ Cast & Producers Donate Money For Show’s Out-Of-Work PAs During Strikes
Image
Being at the bottom of the Hollywood ladder, production assistants are often overlooked and particularly vulnerable — especially in hard times like the current Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Several cast and production members at Chicago P.D. are stepping in to help the 13 set and office PAs on the popular NBC series, pitching in to give each of them $1,500. The money was distributed a week and a half ago, with a second payment on the way.

The campaign was organized by Chicago P.D. First Ad Richard White, with stars Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, Amy Morton and Tracy Spiridakos, executive producer/showrunner Gwen Sigan, writer/executive producer Gavin Harris and writer/co-executive producer Scott Gold among those who have contributed.

Flueger, who donated when approached by White a couple of weeks ago as he was about to go on a trip, reached out to White again upon returning and gave more money,...

Amazon Freevee Has Secretly Shot A Jury Trial Docu-Style Comedy Series Starring James Marsden
Image
Exclusive: There have been whispers for months about a top-secret courtroom docu-style comedy series filming to run on Amazon Freevee. We can reveal that the project, starring James Marsden, is now in post-production and headed to the screen.

“Freevee has confirmed the existence of the docu-style comedy series but details are under wraps amid speculation of the unique, genre-bending format centered around a jury trial,” a rep for the free, ad-supported platform told Deadline, declining further comment.

The secrecy surrounding the filming was driven by the nature of the semi-improvised series which we hear employs a device similar to the setup used in Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat and Brüno movies and the series Who Is America? where actors, often in disguise, interact with unsuspecting regular people.

In the case of the Freevee series, we hear Marsden and a group...

Luke Evans Gives an Update on That ‘Gaston’ Disney+ Show and Reveals How It Was Created
Image
Gaston is one of the wildest and funnest Disney characters of all time -- until he becomes (always was?) a horrific villain. In the original animated Beauty and the Beast, his swaggering song of accomplishments (sung by Richard White) became an instant, braggadocious classic. And in the 2017 live-action remake, Luke Evans inhabited the role and song with both swagger and a sense of pointed vulnerability. Evans did such a good job, his Gaston is getting his own Disney+ spinoff. And Evans flexed his muscles and gave us a …...

Geoffrey Rush Wins $2.9M in Defamation Case Against Daily Telegraph and Nationwide News
Image
Actor Geoffrey Rush has just won a historic defamation appeal against the Daily Telegraph and Nationwide News. The Australian news outlet challenged an Australian federal court decision from April 2019 that found two of their stories from 2017 to be inaccurate. The federal court decided to uphold their original judgment and now the Daily Telegraph and Nationwide News, who are a part of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, will have to pay Rush nearly $3 million in damages.

The two aforementioned articles claimed that Geoffrey Rush was a sexual predator and "pervert" after one of his co-stars from the 2015-16 run of the Sydney Theatre Company production of King Lear accused him of sexual misconduct. One of the headlines was simply, King Leer, with a picture of the actor underneath. The original reports did not name the victim, but it has been revealed that it was actress Eryn Jean Norvill, who played the role of Cordelia,...

Stars: Dani Kind, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong, Romeo Carere, Steve Lund, Maria Nash, Naledi Majola, Richard White, Sara Canning, Celina Martin, Kiroshan Naidoo | Written by Jed Elinoff, Scott Thomas | Directed by Danishka Esterhazy

One banana, two banana, three banana, Gore! The cult-favorite animal rock-band from Hanna-Barbera’s 1968 The Banana Splits Adventure Hour variety program is back with a blood-spattered vengeance as a young boy named Harley and his family go to a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley. But things take an unexpected turn… and the body count quickly rises.

It would seem Warner Bros., through production company Blue Ribbon Content, have taken a leaf out of Universal’s Dtv playbook and commissioned a series of direct to market, low-to-mid budget movies that capitalise on existing franchises. Whereas Universal created a myriad of sequels to popular action franchises like Death Race...

Beauty and the Beast Turns 25: Angela Lansbury, Paige O'Hara, Alan Menken and More Look Back on the Modern Disney Classic
Robby Benson and Paige O'Hara in Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Beauty and the Beast is a tale as old as time. But the story of how the film was made? That legend is best told by the people who worked behind the scenes on the modern Disney classic. In honor of its release on Blu-ray, digital and DVD (and in celebration of its 25th anniversary), E! News spoke exclusively with producer Don Hahn, composer Alan Menken and a trio of voice cast members: Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Potts), Paige O'Hara (Belle) and Richard White (Gaston). The 1991 movie musical had been stuck in development for decades, as the late Walt Disney and his team of animators couldn't find a way to make the story to work. "Walt tried to develop it but couldn't figure out the second act. It was really about an...

Rebel Wilson as Ursula, more highlights from ‘The Little Mermaid’ live
Sara Bareilles
Disney fans were in for a massive smile-inducing and tear-jerking event at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Friday when a 71-piece orchestra and talented vocal line-up performed the music of The Little Mermaid live to picture at a concert screening. Among the cast taking on the roles in the beloved 1989 animated film were Sara Bareilles as Ariel, Rebel Wilson as Ursula, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian, Darren Criss as Prince Eric, and John Stamos as Chef Louis. In a post-Merida, post-Elsa world, Ariel’s tale of longing to leave her father’s home and adventure into another world still resonates with audiences. The ever-catchiness of the music does too. That was evident as the power of nostalgia and the promise of a solid cast packed the Hollywood Bowl at Friday night’s show. The 17,000-seat venue had sold out within three hours, and two more shows were added (for Saturday and Monday) to meet demand.

Evan Spiliotopoulos (Ouija, Hercules) is writing the screenplay, although no specific story details were given at this time. The original Beauty and the Beast was one of the few animated movies to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, grossing over $375 million worldwide and spawning a hit Broadway play and other adaptations such as The CW series Beauty & the Beast and a French Beauty & the Beast adaptation starring Vincent Cassel and L&#233a Seydoux. The characters will also be featured in the upcoming Disney Channel TV movie Descendants.

While it isn't known if there will be any musical elements, Bill Condon wrote the screenplay for the hit musicals Chicago and wrote and directed Dreamgirls.

In tribute to the release of Disney's Maleficent, we've picked out our favourite Disney villains of all time.

Lotso from Toy Story 3 (Alex Fletcher, Deputy Editor)

He may have been pink and smelled like strawberries, but there was nothing even slightly cuddly about Lotso. The villains in the previous Toy Story movies were pretty nasty - Sid, Al McWhiggin, Stinky Pete - but Lotso wins the prize for being the most dastardly of the lot. And don't even get us started on his scary baby sidekick!

His worst crime? Even after he is saved by our gang of plastic heroes, who are willing to forget his Sunnyside misdemeanours, he still turns on them again.

28 Days of Disney Animation: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ A True Classic
We all have our favorite Disney film, but for those who belong to a certain generation, the films released during the Disney Renaissance era (1989-1999) hold a special place. This era saw the company produce some of their most commercially and critically successful films in Disney’s history, by injecting its own unique brand of magic into well-known fairy tales and stories.

A key feature from this era is 1991’s Beauty and the Beast. Based on the French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, the film sees Belle (voiced by Paige O’Hara), a young woman who becomes imprisoned in an attempt to save her father by the monstrous Beast (Robby Benson), a selfish young prince transformed into a monster by a curse until he can learn how to love.

Beauty and the Beast wasn’t the company’s first attempt to bring the fairy tale to the big screen.

Gaston: Disney’s most unconventional villain?
As Beauty And The Beast returns to UK cinemas, Simon salutes its unconventional villain, Gaston. He uses antlers in all of his decorating, y’know…

Rewatching Tangled the other week, I was struck by the character of Mother Gothel in the film. She’s the villain, and by the end of the movie, she’s clearly the nasty character who, in days of old, we’d have been booing and hissing. But rather than being an overt force of evil in Tangled, she’s passive aggressive. There’s reason and control to her villainy, and that makes her a far more interesting antagonist in the modern movie world.

For me, though, this sea change in the world of Disney villains leads to the door of the one who remains my absolute favourite: Gaston. It helps that he appears in my favourite Disney movie, Beauty And The Beast, but then, he...

Review: Beauty and the Beast 3D
Beauty And The Beast 3D

Review by LondonFilmFan

Stars (the voices of): Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury, David Ogden Stiers | Written by Linda Woolverton, Roger Allers | Directed by Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise

With the immense box office success of The Lion King‘s 3D conversion last year, it was only a matter of time before similar films followed suit. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is highly regarded as an animated classic, so who is to argue with a 3D theatrical re-release then? Well, this reviewer volunteers (may as well add “as tribute” since this unpopular opinion just might spell my end). Over twenty years after its initial release, there seems little reason for the film to be occupying cinema space again.

While the hand-drawn animation has an uneven charm, there isn’t much that holds up visually when compared with modern animation.

Robbie Benson Talks Beauty and the Beast 3D, in theaters now

Walt Disney's 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast is back in theaters for a limited 3D release to celebrate its 20th Anniversary. Already a box office hit its first week back on screens, we now celebrate this timeless tale's second weekend out with a chat from its leading Beast, Robby Benson.

We are longtime fans of Robby, so it was a great honor to speak with the man behind the voice of Beauty and the Beast's title character, an arrogant Prince turned into a frightful monster, who must earn the love and respect of another before breaking the spell.

A voice actor since childhood, and star of such live-action classics as Ice Castles and Ode to Billy Joe, we chatted with Robby Benson about the legacy of Beauty and the Beast, his work looping Godzilla, King of the Monsters!

Robby Benson and Paige O'Hara in Beauty and the Beast (1991)
'Beauty And The Beast' Voice Cast: Where Are They Now?
Robby Benson and Paige O'Hara in Beauty and the Beast (1991)
For those of us who grew up during the "Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" era of Disney films, the re-releasing of these childhood classics hits on some very nostalgic nerves. At least for this writer, anyway. I have very specific childhood memories tied to all of those animated classics and am looking forward to seeing "Beauty and the Beast 3D" during its limited release (which began today).

Anyway, in thinking about the magic involved in this film - the first animated movie ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar- I can't help but wonder about the talented voice actors who brought the characters to life. Where are they now? Click through to see what the actors who brought Belle, Beast and Mrs. Potts to life are up to now.

Paige O'Hara - Belle: O'Hara, a trained Broadway actress, has been working with Disney since she won the role of Belle.

Blu-ray 3D Review: Beauty And The Beast 3D Is A Strong Reminder of the Value of the Medium
Disney don’t often make terrible films: even those counted as the worst in the stable are still head and shoulders above 90% of the other animated releases that enter the market under a different banner, and it’s only a matter of relativity when it comes to classifying what is a good Disney and what is a bad. In some cases though, no such debate even gets off the ground.

Most of those cases involve those films which fall within the Classics “vault”, and there are some which excel even in that auspicious company. Beauty and the Beast is firmly one of the finest. Aside from being a watershed moment in the genesis of Disney’s animation, thanks to that still astounding ballroom scene, and it’s CGI innovation, it is a richly rounded, beautifully drawn story that has some of the most compelling characters in the canon, including the best human villain,...

The Ru? Fan Appreciation Instant DVD Collection Giveaway
First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.

You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

New this Week: ‘Captain America,’ ‘Friends with Benefits’ and ‘Limitless (DVD)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Captain America: The First Avenger - Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones

Friends with Benefits - Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, Patricia Clarkson

Movie of the Week

Friends with Benefits

The Stars: Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, Patricia Clarkson

The Plot: A guy (Timberlake) and girl (Kunis) try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it’s not long before they learn that they want something more.

The Buzz: Hmm, this premise is strangely familiar, and comes with an even more docile cast than No Strings Attached. I still have some faith in the film itself though, as director Will Gluck’s previous entry was the excellent Easy A. Still, Gluck didn’t write Easy A, and that’s what was great about that film, the writing. Two new relatively untested writers penned Friends with Benefits – yeah, I’m right back to doubting this film. But...

New this Week: ‘Tangled,’ ‘Faster’ and ‘The Expendables (DVD)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Burlesque – Christina Aguilera, Cher

Faster – Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace

Love and Other Drugs – Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway

Tangled – Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Ron Perlman

Movie of the Week

Faster

The Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace

The Plot: An ex-con (Johnson) sets out to avenge his brother’s death.

The Buzz: Dwayne Johnson is back in straight-up action mode — after The Tooth Fairy and The Race to Witch Mountain — I was wondering if he’d ever return. Yes, Faster is certainly an action film, but it appears to be more than that; it appears to be a wildly rampaging, no-holds-barred, glorious tale of bullet-sweet vengeance. Well, that’s my gut-shot feeling anyway. Billy Bob Thornton is poised to play the perfect foil as the “slow justice” cop that stands in Johnson’s vengeful way. There are a couple solid female actresses here as well,...

Interview with Belle from Beauty and the Beast – Paige O’Hara
With the imminent release of Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray HeyUGuys were lucky enough to get some time with Paige O’Hara, the accomplished Broadway actress who gave voice to one of Disney’s most cherished heroines, Belle.

Speaking to Paige was rather surreal, but wonderful at the same time. She is now the second Disney Princess that I have interviewed after speaking with Anika Noni Rose earlier this year about The Princess and the Frog.

Beauty and the Beast is released on Blu-ray and DVD 1st November.

——————–

Do you mind telling us a bit about how you started getting into the project with Beauty and The Beast?

Well, I was working in New York as a Broadway actress and, Les Miserables had a huge success ‘cos Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer were known in New York as Broadway writers and, I read about [Beauty at The Beast] in the Times and I...
