Studio Ulster, Northern Ireland’s new virtual production facilities, is opening its doors for business today. The 75,000 square foot studio offers large-scale virtual production stages designed to support productions at every level – from big-budget Hollywood productions, high-end television, game development and animation.
Located in Belfast, the facility integrates real-time engines, in-cameral visual effects, volumetric capture and motion tracking into a sustainable pipeline. It’s the result of £72M ($96.7M) investment, part-funded through the Belfast Region City Deal and is developed by Ulster University in partnership with Belfast Harbour.
The facilities sit on the same lot at Belfast Harbour Studios, which recently housed the live action How To Train Your Dragon as well as Netflix’s The School For Good & Evil.

Actor Will Smith has given us some memorable movie characters: Agent J in Men in Black, post-apocalyptic survivor Robert Neville in I am a Legend, Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness, and his Oscar-winning turn as Richard Williams in King Richard. The man was considered a major box-office draw back in the 90s and is loved by his fans for showcasing a wide range on-screen. Now, just in time for the 4th of July, his iconic film Independence Day has found a new free home at Tubi.
The film, directed by Roland Emmerich, follows disparate groups of people: a geek, a pilot, the US President, and a group of ragtag survivors, who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a worldwide attack by a powerful extraterrestrial race with their advanced weaponry. With the other people of the world, they launch a counterattack on July 4—Independence Day in the United States.

Will Smith just released his first album in 20 years — and he has a story to tell, one that includes the infamous Chris Rock Oscars slap, addressing rumors, and more. Based on a True Story is the perfect name for Smith's newly released album, because not only does it serve as a 'this is my truth' moment, but it also gives him a chance to get back to his late '80s and early '90s roots, one that made him a four-time Grammy Award winner.
Released on Friday, March 28, Smith wasted no time getting straight to the point with the opening track, "Int. Barbershop — Day." It opens with the words, "Will Smith is canceled." It's a phrase that was heard everywhere by social media users, people in Hollywood, newscasters, etc. The song features DJ Jazzy Jeff, one of Smith's longtime collaborators and best friends, and social media influencer B. Simone.

On his new album, Based on a True Story, Will Smith is defiant about his infamous Chris Rock Oscars slap, addressing the incident on multiple songs.
The opening track on the project, “Int. Barbershop – Day,” is a skit with a chorus of voices sharing rumors and differing opinions of the actor and rapper, including “Will Smith is canceled” and “I ain’t never gonna forgive him for that shit he did.”
Later on, one voice says, “I heard he won the Oscar, but he had to give it back.” Another chimes in, “And you know they only made him do that shit because he’s Black.”
The song also references Smith’s response at the Oscars to Rock’s joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith: “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talking about?/ You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”

Three years removed from his infamous slap of Chris Rock on stage at the 94th Academy Awards, Will Smith is enjoying a strong comeback to his film and music career as he looks to put the incident behind him. Though the legendary actor remains banned from future Oscar events due to the slap, he doesn't seem too bothered by it publicly.
Speaking about the Oscars ban with the Associated Press, Smith addressed whether he plans to appeal the decision, which prevents him from attending any Academy-related events for the next 10 years. While Smith was coy about any appeal plans, he insisted he's continuing to learn from his mistakes and see where things go. “I am looking to be the best human I can possibly be, and I’m gonna take what I get with that," Smith said.
Smith's largely pristine reputation took its biggest hit when he slapped and cursed out Rock following a G.

If the Oscars were a high school prom, think of the Academy as the strict principal—one bad move and you’re out. But instead of a tardy slip, it’s a lifetime ban, and instead of a bad dress, it’s a slap across the face or a scandalous crime. While the Oscars may glitter with glamour and red carpet shine, underneath the sequins, there’s a no-nonsense code of conduct that even Hollywood’s brightest stars must follow.
The Oscars roll around every year, but there’s a dark cloud hanging over the event—the infamous ‘No Entry’ list of celebs who’ve crossed the line and earned themselves a one-way ticket out of the Academy.

Bectu Launches Biggest Ever Survey
British broadcasting union Bectu is launching what it is calling its largest ever survey of those working behind the scenes in TV and film. The union is asking workers across the UK’s creative industries about their experiences and views on key issues facing the sector, including pay, employment practices, mental health and wellbeing and finances. The move comes with the freelance workforce in a perilous position, with thousands exiting the sector as they struggle for work and grapple with low pay and poor conditions. Bectu has repeatedly stressed that this is worsening as time goes on. “Creative industry workers are critical to our economy and to our social and cultural fabric,” said Bectu head Philippa Childs. “But data on creative workers is lacking. The 1990s were ripe with terrific sitcoms, namely "Seinfeld," "Frasier," "Friends," "Home Improvement," and "Everyone Loves Raymond." However, tucked between these shows was "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," a snappy, energetic, incredibly entertaining family comedy that launched star Will Smith to superstardom, was nominated for and won a slew of awards, spawned a modern-day spinoff series, and crafted a beloved theme song that Quincy Jones believes cemented hip-hop into pop culture. It also packed quite the emotional punch and it wasn't afraid to hit the dramatic beats.
"Fresh Prince" ran for six solid seasons, garnering positive reviews for its cast and strong viewership ratings. Nearly everyone involved used their time on the show to achieve fame and fortune on other projects, whether television, movies, or video games. While most of the main cast never rose to the same success they enjoyed on "Fresh Prince," they remained relevant in the decades following its conclusion in 1996. So,...

King Richard's ending solidifies the story of a dedicated father and two young girls who were destined for big things in the world of professional sports. Taking a rather unique approach to a typical sports biopic, King Richard tells the true story of the unusual childhood of tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams through the perspective of their father, Richard Williams (Will Smith), who envisioned great things for his daughters as tennis stars, but also sought to give them a normal childhood.
King Richard's ending takes place at the 1994 Bank of the West Classic, a Wta Tour tournament still in existence today. It's Venus's first professional match, but she's already received massive media attention and a $3 million sponsorship offer due to both her evident talent and Richard's involvement with the media. King Richard is an entertaining sports movie from a different perspective that makes it a must-watch for fans of the genre. The 2021 film is about the early tennis careers of sisters Venus and Serena Williams, who became some of the biggest stars in the game while also being counted among the greatest athletes of all time. However, the movie is told from the point of view of their father, Richard Williams (Will Smith), who was dedicated to seeing his daughters achieve great things in the sport but also wanted to see them have normal childhoods.

While Will Smith leads the King Richard cast in his Oscar-winning role, there is a terrific ensemble working together to bring this true sports story to the big screen. Venus and Serena Williams’ names are iconic in the world of sports, but King Richard offers a slight twist in that it’s actually more about their father, Richard Williams, a tennis coach who tries to put his daughters’ talents on the world stage. While he is a complex and intriguing character, King Richard benefits from the entire cast.

One of the most beloved movies Disney released during the 1980s was the live-action/animated hybrid film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The murder mystery, set in the early days of Hollywood, was an innovator in the world of special effects, seamlessly combining live actors. Animation director Richard Williams was given a Special Achievement Award at the 1989 Academy Awards for his efforts.
Over the years, the film has been seen as a cult classic, receiving multiple short films and even getting its very own dark ride, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, at both Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland.
However, whenever the subject of a possible sequel pops up, it usually ends in “It can’t happen because of X or Y.” Aside from the various character licenses, the production was a collaboration between Disney and Amblin Entertainment, meaning that they would have to mutually agree to green-light a sequel.

Robert Zemeckis was the latest guest on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast as he made the press rounds for his latest directorial effort “Here,” which reunites him with “Forrest Gump” stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. While going through his many box office hits, Zemeckis confirmed that a sequel script for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” exists. However, one reason it’s unlikely to get made is because Jessica Rabbit is too hot for the current Disney regime.
“Here’s what you have to know: The current Disney would never make ‘Roger Rabbit’ today,” Zemeckis claimed. “They can’t make a movie with Jessica in it. The sequel script isn’t ever going to see the light of day as good as it is. I mean look what they did to Jessica at the theme park. They trussed her up in a trench coach.”

Paul Newman had no desire to play paddy-cake for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.”
According to director Robert Zemeckis, the actor was approached to lead the cartoon live-action hybrid Disney film. The 1988 feature was a cartoon-ified take on the noir genre and centered on private detective Eddie Valiant, who was later played by Bob Hoskins. The film went on to win three Oscars for film editing, sound effects editing, and visual effects. Animator Richard Williams also received a Special Achievement Award from the Academy in 1989 for his animation direction.
Zemeckis said during Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Newman was less than enthused to be considered for the lead role.
“I actually offered the Bob Hoskins role to Paul Newman and he was insulted,” Zemeckis said. “He said, ‘What? You want me to do a movie where I’m playing against a cartoon rabbit?’ He didn’t like it at all.

Nearly 30 years after “Bad Boys” hit theaters, Will Smith and Michael Bay are eyeing a reunion. Bay is in negotiations to direct the action flick “Fast and Loose” for Netflix, with Smith set to star.

“The best is yet to come,” Richard Williams said as he accepted a Special Achievement Award for his work on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” during the 1988 Academy Awards. In retrospect, the Canadian animator was referring to “The Thief and the Cobbler,” a film he had been working on for close to 30 years and would continue to work on for many more to come.
“The Thief and the Cobbler” began as an adaptation of Afghan writer Idries Shah’s “The Exploits of the Incomparable Mullah Nasrudin.” When agreements between Williams and the Shah family fell through, the former reinvented the production by coming up with an original, Middle East-themed story. The folkloric hero was replaced by a nameless thief, as well as a cobbler named Tack. Both characters would be mute, relying on physical comedy in the spirit of Charlie Chaplin and other silent movie stars, while the film’s cartoony...

After the horrible incident at the Oscars when he assaulted Chris Rock because of a joke, Will Smith is slowly returning to the scene and is trying to revitalize his career. The actor has effectively been blacklisted since the assault and has been struggling to land a decent job. Sure, the Bad Boys franchise brought him back, but that’s his own franchise, so it makes sense that the producers knew that replacing Smith wouldn’t do them much good. And so, we might be seeing him on screen again more frequently in the upcoming years.
Be that as it may, the actor has once again entered the spotlight and the media are more interested in him as well. In a recent talk in the First We Feast’s “Hot Ones” series, Will Smith talked about his career and he has also picked the best movie he’s starred in,...

King Richard whitewashes Richard Williams' character, omitting his focus on money over racial diversity in pushing Venus and Serena into tennis. The biopic overlooks Richard Williams' extreme coaching tactics, including verbal abuse from schoolchildren and intervention from Compton gang members. Despite downplaying unsavory details like Richard's infidelity and temper, King Richard ultimately paints him as a heroic, loving father.
Released in September 2021, King Richard is a critically praised biographical sports drama starring Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father of superstar tennis siblings Venus and Serena Williams. Zendaya both led the Challengers cast and was an executive producer on the Luca Guadagnino-directed film. Zendaya played Tashi Duncan in Challengers, a junior tennis star whose hopes for a successful professional career were dashed when she sadly injured herself in college and couldnt recover well enough to compete at the same level she previously had.

Luca Guadagnino’s love triangle drama Challengers starts its UK-Ireland box office campaign this weekend through Warner Bros.
Opening in 702 sites with additional venues still being added, the film stars Zendaya, 2016 Screen Star of Tomorrow Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in the story of three aspiring tennis professionals fighting both for championships and romantically.
Initially programmed as the opening film of last year’s Venice Film Festival, Challengers was withdrawn following the actors’ strike, which would have prevented its starry cast from promoting the release.

Leading up to the 2022 Academy Awards, it was a surprise to absolutely no one that Reinaldo Marcus Green’s King Richard was a buzzworthy title. Its leading man expected to walk away with a gleaming statue. The film was met with rave reviews, an appreciation for the world-famous sports dad reaching new heights after his story, produced by his daughters Venus and Serena Williams, hit the big screen. Indeed, Richard Williams (Will Smith) leaves audiences marveling at his tenacity, instincts, and perseverance, but not to be left in his shadow is the story of his wife, Oracene 'Brandy' Williams, who is powerfully played by Aunjanue Ellis.

It was not the best time for Hollywood star Will Smith despite winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams in his 2021 film, King Richard. The celebration of his Oscar win was sidelined by his behavior as he slapped presenter Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.

As Rock attempted to lighten the event with laughter, he made a joke directed at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith while introducing the nominees for Best Documentary at the Oscars. Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes in response to the joke. Smith found it funny at first as he was seen laughing at the joke, but after seeing his wife’s response, the actor could not hold back and rushed to the stage and slapped Rock.
