Wrong Reasons: darkly comedic thriller produced by Kevin Smith gets August release
Image
Mvd Entertainment Group has picked up the North American distribution rights to the darkly comedic thriller Wrong Reasons, which was executive produced by and features Kevin Smith. The company is planning to give Wrong Reasons a digital, VOD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 15th.

Coming our way from AntiCurrent Productions, the film marks the feature writing and directorial debut of Josh Roush, who has been working for Smith’s company Smodco for the last decade. The story Roush crafted for his film begins as an ambiguously intentioned masked man kidnaps a drug addicted punk rock singer and triggers a police investigation headed by Detective Charles Dobsonas well as a media circus.

The punk rock singer is played by Liv Roush (Holidays), who also produced the film. James Parks (From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money) is the masked man and Ralph Garman (Ted) is Detective Dobsonas. Their co-stars...

Netflix orders ‘Heartbreak High’ reboot
Image
Netflix has commissioned a reboot of beloved ’90s teen drama Heartbreak High, to be produced by Fremantle Australia and Dutch production company NewBe.

The eight-part series, to shoot in Sydney with the support of Screen Nsw, will be inspired by the original but reimagined for today.

NewBe started shopping a contemporary remake at MIPCOM last year, after acquiring the rights from Brian Abel, partner of the late Ben Gannon, who created and produced the original. Fremantle was understood to be involved in March.

Production is expected to begin next year, with the show to premiere globally on the streamer in 2022. Fremantle Asia Pacific CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor and creative director, scripted content Carly Heaton will be the EPs, together with NewBe founder and CEO Jeroen Koopman and Tarik Traidia. Abel and Michael Jenkins, one of the original EPs, will be consultants on the series.

Set in Sydney’s fictional Hartley High School,...

Contemporary remake of ‘Heartbreak High’ on offer
‘Heartbreak High.’

Some 20 years after Heartbreak High ended, a contemporary remake of the popular Australian high school series is being shopped at Mipcom.

Dutch production company NewBe, which secured worldwide English-language rights to the show created by the late Ben Gannon, is seeking to partner with streaming companies on new series.

Following students at a fictional school in a tough Sydney neighbourhood, the drama launched on Network Ten in 1994 and moved to the ABC three years later, ending in 1999. More than 200 episodes were produced.

The show introduced many new or relatively fresh faces including Alex Dimitriades, Callan Mulvey, Ada Nicodemu, Doris Younane, Rebecca Smart, Tony Martin, Abi Tucker, Salvatore Coco, Kym Wilson, Scott Major and Emma Roche.

Gannon died in 2007 and rights to the series reverted to his partner Brian Abel, who will serve as a consultant on the remake alongside Michael Jenkins, who was the executive producer.

Jenkins was...

Aussie TV we want on DVD
When being an adult seems all too difficult, there's nothing like the warm hug of nostalgia to shield you from the real world.

What better than some home-grown TV shows on DVD to take you back to the days of after-school slurpees, Saturday mornings in your jammies, or when your favourite stars were fresh-faced newbies?

These series haven't been given the chance to fit the bill yet. Here's why they should...

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

[TV] McLeod's Daughters
A long-running, picturesque television series centered on an all-female workforce who come together in fellowship to revive the fortunes of the flagging Drover's Run cattle ranch, McLeod's Daughters is considered something of a national treasure in it's native Australia. After eight successful seasons culminated earlier this year with the show's 224th and final episode (how many U.S. shows make it that far?), we are treated to this DVD re-release of the 1996 television movie where the journey first began.

A good old fashioned melodrama set against the gorgeous backdrop of big sky country, McLeod's Daughters is a wildly uneven affair where some solid performances by the female leads are consistently undermined by poor scripting, an overblown soundtrack, and the sadly all too frequent intrusion by moments of appalling technical incompetence. The story begins with city-girl Tess (Kym Wilson) making the long journey into the heartland to deliver news to her estranged father,...
