How Elvis and His Team Fooled the Press (Including Variety!) With Fake Story of Police Crackdown on ‘Risque’ Act
Image
With the opening of “Elvis,” Aussie director Baz Luhrmann’s opulent and operatic retelling of the life of Elvis Presley, the late King of Rock ‘n’ Roll returns to Hollywood, where his first local stage performance took place 65 years this October, in the form of a grandly ambitious biopic. It’s a movie that “prints the myth” on at least one key count … but so did Variety, back in the day.

If you watch closely, you’ll catch a reference to Elvis’ purported trouble with at least one local police department, supposedly vigilantly monitoring EP’s provocative stage moves in case the King’s 1957 gyrations proved “too much,” as deemed by the self-appointed arbiters of decency and militant opponents of juvenile delinquency.

“L A. Police Order Presley ‘Clean Up’ His Pan-Pac Show” screamed the Variety headline on October 30, 1957, the day after the second of two shows. The prose gets more purple from there.

Nancy Wilson
Nancy Wilson, Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer and TV Personality, Dies at 81
Nancy Wilson
Nancy Wilson, one of the most revered jazz singers of the 20th century, has died, her manager told the Associated Press. She was 81.

The singer passed away at her home in Pioneertown, a small California community north of Palm Springs, after a long illness, according to manager Devra Hall.

Wilson’s three Grammy awards spanned a more than 40-year period, with her first coming in 1965 in the Best Rhythm & Blues category for her Capitol single “How Glad I Am.” Her last was in 2007, awarded for Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Turned to Blue,” her final release. (She had seven nominations in all.) Wilson’s recording career actually dates back to 1959, when she released “Like in Love,” an album arranged by the legendary Billy May.

Outside of the music intelligentsia, Wilson may be remembered by millions of TV viewers who recall her 1974-75 NBC variety series, “The Nancy Wilson Show,.” She...

Nancy Wilson Dies: Grammy-Winning Singer, Actress Was 81
Nancy Wilson
Singer Nancy Wilson, whose torch song stylings made her a pop and jazz favorite for more than five decades, has died at age 81. She passed on Thursday after a long illness at her Pioneertown home near Joshua Tree in California, according to her publicist.

Wilson retired from touring in 2011, but her long time on the road as a jazz festival favorite and impact via recordings that were major pop landmarks kept her presence alive. Wilson released eight albums that reached the top 20 on Billboard’s pop charts in the 1960s alone, powered by such songs as “Guess Who I Saw Today” and the 1964 hit “(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am,” which drew upon Broadway, pop and jazz.

Although many regarded her as a jazz singer, Wilson herself said she was a “song stylist.”

Wilson collaborated with many artists, none more prominent than Cannonball Adderley, with whom she recorded...

Nancy Wilson, Grammy-Winning ‘How Glad I Am’ Singer, Dies at 81
Nancy Wilson
Nancy Wilson, a genre-spanning, Grammy-winning singer whose career spanned more than 50 years, died Thursday at age 81. Her longtime manager made the news public.

Born in 1937, Wilson grew up in Ohio and began her music career shortly after high school in 1956, working for Rusty Bryant’s Carolyn Club Big Band. Moving to New York City in 1959 on the advice of Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, she began playing clubs while supporting herself as a secretary, and was signed to Capitol Records the next year.

Though she started out in Jazz, she performed in multiple genres including R&B, Broadway, and pop throughout her long career and resisted categorization, preferring instead to call herself a “song stylist.” She became famous in 1962 through a collaboration with Adderley, an album called “Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley” that produced the hit single “Save Your Love For Me”.

Search: The Complete Series Available From Warner Archive Collection
The Warner Archive Collection is really starting to put out some great DVDs that feature titles you aren’t going to find anywhere else, and the latest to be made available is Search. A massively fun show from the early 70s, Search starred Hugh O’Brian, Doug McClure, and Tony Franciosa, and was (although I’m testing my memory) a show that pulled great tech ideas into the espionage drama realm, at a point when some of the ideas were practically sci-fi.

The complete series is available now, and it’s a lost classic that deserves a look. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get a taste of it to know if you’re interested in buying, but for those who remember the series, this is a real treat.

Catch the full info below, and don’t let this one escape your notice.

Look no further: You can now find Search...

James Moody Dead: Saxophonist Dies Of Pancreatic Cancer
San Diego — Jazz saxophonist James Moody is best known for his 1949 "Moody's Mood for Love," but when he recorded the hit that eventually was elected into the Grammy Awards' Hall of Fame, he said, he was just "trying to find the right notes."

"People later said to me: 'You must have been very inspired when you recorded that.' And I said: 'Yeah I was inspired to find the right notes!'" Moody told the San Diego Union-Tribune in February.

The song later was recorded by Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse and others. Longtime fan and confidante Bill Cosby called it a "national anthem."

Moody, who recorded more than 50 solo albums as well as songs with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and B.B. King, died Thursday at San Diego Hospice after a 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer, his wife said. He was 85.
