Pic is set at a struggling New York dive bar in the days leading up to Christmas, 2019. Diane Warren, Brian Wilson, Sheryl Crow and Emmy-winning screenwriter Larry Karaszewski are among the stars remembering Burt Bacharach.
The Grammy- and Oscar-winning composer died Wednesday of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles. He was 94.
Through his partnership with Hal David, Bacharach brought swanky sophistication to pop music in the ’60s.
He won three Oscars and eight Grammys and composed the music for roughly 50 top 10 hits, including “Walk on By,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” “What’s New Pussycat?” “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”
Crow, who performed Bacharach’s song “Dancing With My Shadow,” from the 2016 film A Boy Called Po, for which he also wrote his first score in 16 years, called getting to know him, “one of the great thrills and honors” of her life.

You don’t have to be friends with the people you make music with – but it helps not to be enemies.
The annals of music history are filled with instances of bandmates whose relationships turned sour, from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel to Morrissey and Johnny Marr.
In one of modern music’s bitterest feuds, former Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and David Gilmour have spent years exchanging vitriolic words in the press. This week, Polly Samson, ex-Pink Floyd lyricist and wife of David Gilmour, made unsubstantiated allegations against Waters online.
Waters wrote on a social media account that he was “aware of the incendiary and wildly inaccurate comments made about him on Twitter by Polly Samson which he refutes entirely”, and said he is “currently taking advice as to his position”.
Of course, plenty of great music has been made by people who were at personal loggerheads – just ask Fleetwood Mac.

Willie Nelson is many things – he’s a country music legend, a Texas icon, an outspoken activist and one of history’s most famous tax evaders. At 89, Nelson’s life so far has been colorful and gloriously overstuffed that it probably wouldn’t fit into a single documentary. That’s why “Willie Nelson & Family,” which just premiered at Sundance, isn’t a movie exactly, but an episodic independent series about his singular life and his music. TheWrap spoke to the series’ directors Tom Zimny and Oren Moverman at Sundance about how the film came together and finding their groove as filmmakers. “It was a great journey,” said Zimny.
Zimny, who has directed a number of Bruce Springsteen films, including 2019’s theatrical release “Western Stars,” and Moverman had never worked together (but Zimny had stuck him in the audience of one of the Springsteen movies) but it is clear from...

Tributes have poured in for the late great, David Crosby after his death was announced Thursday (19 January).
The rock and roll legend passed away aged 81 following “a long illness”, his widow Jan Dance announced.
The musician was a founding member of the hugely popular Sixties groups, the Byrds and Crosby, as well as Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Crosby’s former bandmates Stephen Stills and Graham Nash were among the first to pay homage to the artist.
“It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed,” Nash wrote on Facebook. ” I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years.

Refresh for updates… Stephen Stills has joined his former bandmate Graham Nash in paying tribute to David Crosby, who died Thursday at 81.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Stills said:
I read a quote in this morning’s paper attributed to compose Gustav Mahler that stopped me for a moment:
“Death has, on placid cat’s paws, entered the room.”
I shoulda known something was up.
David and I butted heads a lot over time, but they were mostly glancing blows, yet still left us numb skulls..
I was happy to be at peace with him.
He was without question a giant of a musician, and his harmonic sensibilities were nothing short of genius.
The glue that held us together as our vocals soared, like Icarus, towards the sun.
I am deeply saddened at his passing and shall miss him beyond measure.”

Let me know if you've heard this one before. A young, aspiring musician gets discovered by a record executive. They shoot to the top of the charts and become a superstar, performing for larger and larger crowds and find themselves moving on from their humble beginnings into an extravagant, lavish lifestyle. Then, they find themselves in the midst of fame, where the spotlight is constantly on them and every person in their life wants something from them, especially money. Meanwhile, a love affair starts that will inevitably go south in due time. They become addicted to drugs and hit rock bottom, eventually having to go to rehab. A few years later, they make a triumphant return to their true calling of music.
I have just described to you basically every single biopic about a famous musician. Some cover it up with flashy stylistic choices, like "Elvis." Some disguise it with non-linear storytelling,...

The Masked Singer season 8 semi-finals crowned Harp and Lambs as the finalists. Harp was a front-runner from the start. Most fans assume she'll take home the masked trophy. Snowstorm was also a semi-finalist, but her vocals weren't strong enough to beat the Harp or Lambs.
Snowstorm debuted during Comedy Roast night and had a lot of jokes for the panelists and host Nick Cannon. Panelists assumed she was a comedian, but only Jenny McCarthy guessed Nikki Glaser. She was pretty easy to guess as she gave some obvious clues. Fans also have a pretty good idea who's behind Harp and Lambs.

Paul Dano's film career has been awards-adjacent since the very beginning. At seventeen, he won the Best Debut Performance Spirit Award for his work in L.I.E. Five years later, he was one of the stars of Little Miss Sunshine, the first of three Best Picture Oscar nominees in the actor's filmography. Still, though the Academy regularly loves Dano's movies, they have never shown any affection for Dano himself. That might change this year with The Fabelmans, where the actor portrays a fictionalized version of Steven Spielberg's dad in what's bound to be one of the season's biggest award magnets.
To celebrate the actor's achievements and potential first Oscar nomination, let's look back to the last time Dano was on the Academy's radar. In 2015, he almost category frauded his way to a Supporting Actor nomination for his work as Brian Wilson in Bill Pohlad's Love & Mercy…...

Inspiration can come from the strangest of places. A single bite of a madeleine provoked Marcel Proust to compose "In Search of Lost Time," one of the finest pieces of writing of the 20th Century. Life is strange and surprising like that. But learning that Anya Taylor-Joy owes her acting career to Beach Boys co-founder Mike Love is, to put it politely, counterintuitive.
Clearly, The Beach Boys are one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of all time, but this is due in large part to the songwriting genius of Brian Wilson. The group was an innocuous, surf-pop collective until Wilson concocted the adventurous, aurally majestic "Pet Sounds" in 1966, which, as a concept album, pre-dates The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by a year. As for Love, he was legally awarded co-writing credit on some of The Beach Boys' early classics in 1994, but he basically turned...

Chris Frantz isn’t too happy with Bob Dylan.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the Talking Heads drummer responded to a perceived slight in Dylan’s new book The Philosophy of Modern Song.
In the book, the iconic musician writes, “Elvis Costello and the Attractions were a better band than any of their contemporaries. Light years better.”

Though the Talking Heads were not mentioned, Frantz still took the comment personally.
“When I read that, I just thought, ‘Jesus, Bob,’” the drummer said. “’I understand you dig Elvis Costello, but did you have to put it that way?’”
His comments to Rolling Stone came after a Facebook post in which Frantz was considerably less diplomatic about his feelings.
“With all due respect to the Attractions and to drummer Pete Thomas in particular, I’d like to say to Bob...

It was a big night for Lainey Wilson at the CMA Awards.
Nominated for six awards, the “Heart Like a Truck” singer wound up taking home the Female Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year honours — and brought along a very special date for the occasion: her dad, Brian Wilson.
Sharing such a special occasion with her father was even more meaningful given that he’s recovering from a stroke that caused him to lose his left eye.

When Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in late May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was punctuated by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar — and the Golden Globe and the SAG Award, for that matter — was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the third choice in Gold Derby’s combined Best Actor odds at 9/2, trailing top pick Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” at 69/20 and Colin Farrell for “The Banshees of Inisherin” at 4/1.
So what does Oscar history tell us about his chances of getting nominated for “Elvis”? When it comes to Butler, he will be looking to follow in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends. And he surely delivers an incandescent performance as Elvis Aron Presley.

Paul Dano has played a “Batman” villain and a Beach Boy, but the Emmy nominee had no desire to play a presumed child kidnapper in “Prisoners.”
The Denis Villeneuve-directed film stars Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, and Terence Howard as parents whose children are taken. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the detective on the case, as the local community fingers Dano’s character and his suspicious mother (Melissa Leo) as being involved. The 2013 film was nominated for Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins’ work.
“People love ‘Prisoners,'” Dano said while reflecting on his best roles for a GQ video. “This is one of those that you don’t really want to do, but you do, if you know what I mean.”
He continued, “I’d seen Denis’ film ‘Incendies,’ and he told me Roger Deakins was shooting it, who I had a massive crush on. Did I want to play that part?...

Brian Wilson, legendary cofounder of the Beach Boys, was driving through Malibu with a good friend, Rolling Stone editor Jason Fine, when they spotted a classic Cadillac—but from when? The man who cowrote “Little Deuce Coupe” and other hot rod hits of the ’60s wanted to know, so he shouted out the window, “Hey, buddy! What year is that car?!” (It was a ’41.) This moment of pure lightness is unexpected in the documentary Long Promised Road. The American Masters installment lets the at-times tentative and vulnerable Wilson—who turns 80 on June 20—look back at a life of remarkable ebbs and flows. “The Brian you see goofing around? That’s Brian to me. He’s engaged and curious and funny in ways people don’t really know,” says Fine, who acts as tour guide and iPod-spinning DJ, chauffeuring Wilson to meaningful spots from his past. Five cameras recorded the pair...

To paraphrase, the central character, Uber driver Ralphie, aspires to be a bodybuilder and consequently “gets inducted into a libertarian masculinity cult [...]

"These murders... seem personal." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Room 9, the latest feature from actor / filmmaker Thomas Walton. This is getting a direct-to-dvd release which is pretty much already an indication of the quality, with a derivative plot that sounds similar to so many other mystery thrillers. Life altering sins of the past revisit modern day lost souls in a small town... 40 years later. A mysterious woman arrives to investigate the site of a murder and suffers bizarre flashbacks related to the inn's slayings. Is she connected to the killings... or the next victim? The film stars Michael Berryman, Scout Taylor-Compton, Brian Anthony Wilson, Kane Hodder, Michael Emery, and Adam Ratcliffe. This looks like extra schlocky shock horror, which might be fun for some folks out there. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Thomas Walton's Room 9, direct from YouTube: Long ago, Room...

Imagine finding one of van Gogh’s early sketches for “Starry Night,” or a rough draft of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. For anyone who loves music, the mammoth 50th anniversary reissue of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is just as good—if not better. The expanded package includes nearly two hours worth of outtakes from the groundbreaking 1967 sessions, offering not only an alternate-universe look at some of the most beloved tracks in the rock canon, but also a fascinating fly-on-the-wall view of four young artists at the height of their power.

Filmmaker Oren Moverman has never shied away from tackling difficult, seemingly impossible material to adapt to film with some of his writing work including the screenplays for Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There and the equally intriguing Brian Wilson biopic, Love and Mercy.
As a director and producer he’s followed suit with his 2nd film Rampart starring Woody Harrelson as an L.A. police officer with questionable motives, followed by a meditative look at homelessness with Richard Gere in Time Out of Mind.
For his latest movie, The Dinner, Moverman adapts Dutch author Herman Koch’s novel, which on the surface is about a dinner between two related couples with all the requisite food porn. As it progresses, it explores a variety of topics including mental illness and the battle of Gettysburg.

I’ll freely admit there was a heavy dose of trepidation going into Apocalypse Kiss. You see I’ve had the “pleasure” of watching one of writer/director Christian Jude Grillo’s films (Deer Crossing aka Wasteland) before and it wasn’t the greatest of experiences… But just like you should never judge a book by its cover I feel you should never judge a filmmaker from just one film, even if that film was a complete shambles. Grillo’s previous effort was a backwoods thriller, a poor mans Texas Chainsaw Massacre if you will but this time out Grillo aims his sights higher, bringing us a dystopian vision of a city in ruin, controlled by corrupt politicians and evil corporations.

After months of festival screenings, schmoozing luncheons, and lesser award shows, this year's Oscar season finally got real and cut the dead weight this morning when the Academy Awards announced the final roster of nominees. As is always the case, there were a number of pleasant surprises (congrats on that Best Visual Effects nod, Ex Machina!).
And, naturally, there were a much larger number of devastating omissions, as dreams were dashed and the toilets into which studios sunk their campaign dollars were finally flushed. Some of the snubs were probably deserved,...

This year’s Oscar race may offer a new experience to many first time nominees throughout the Academy’s categories.
Though many familiar faces are a part of this year’s final push toward the big night (notably: last year’s best director, Alejandro G. Inarritu for his western revenge epic, The Revenant, and best actor, Eddie Redmayne for his performance as transgender artist Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl) the roster of never-been-nominees is shaping up to be quite substantial.
Redmayne’s costar, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, looks like a strong contender for her performance as artist Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl. The 27-year-old has never been nominated by the Academy but recently received a nomination from the Golden Globes for her work in the film.

Chicago – Another year is about to slide towards the next one, so it’s time to look back at the cinema universe of 2015, the 10 Best Films of the year. In this arena, the intrepid “Über Critic” of HollywoodChicago.com, Patrick McDonald, will attempt to give his spin on the “best of” point of view.
And now we switch from third person to first person, so I – the aforementioned Patrick McDonald – will attempt to claim it all. It was another roller coaster year of robots, driving machines, pop stars, financial derivatives and Miss Universe. In other words, another year of inventive film creativity and philosophy.
This is the 2015 honorable mention section, and there were so many “eleventh place” films of note. My favorite superhero film was “Ant-Man,” for their mix of “small time” adventure and comedy. The dramas “Brooklyn,” “Sicario,” “Flowers,” “The Farewell Party,” “Nasty Baby” and “Spotlight” were excellent experiences.

Right at the tail end of last week, another short list hit the web, this one having to do with Best Original Song. This establishes which tunes from the flicks of 2015 will be eligible for Academy Award nominations. Voters now officially have 74 songs to sift through, all in the name of Oscar consideration. There’s a noticeable snub in the lot, but we’ll get to that later. For now, we’ll focus in a bit with a handful of the songs that seem to be the main contenders here. At the same time though, keep this in mind…it’s really just a shot in the dark with this category. Though there’s no way to be sure, these are the songs I’d be most inclined to assume have a chance at a nod here. There’s “None Of Them Are You” from Anomalisa, “Fighting Stronger” from Creed,...

Will Lady Gaga return to Oscar's stage? You know we always kind of thought that Brian Wilson song from Love & Mercy wasn't going to be eligible. It seemed like it had been written before the movie and not for the movie. It's not on the Oscar longlist this year but 74 other songs from the movies are.
Some of the tunes are from obscure movies we haven't even heard of (such is always the case with this category) some are from Bollywood pictures which got stateside release. And a couple of handfuls of songs from Oscar contenders in other categories such as Anomalisa, Cinderella, Shaun the Sheep Movie and Youth are also in the mix.
Lady Gaga, who performed a medley from The Sound of Music last time she was on Oscar's stage, might be back as a nominee if they love her song from the documentary The Hunting Ground . She's...

“Spotlight” has officially secured its place in the awards race with its first win of the season at New York’s Gotham Independent Film Awards. The dramatic retelling of a Boston journalism team’s dogged efforts to uncover a sex abuse scandal within the Catholic Church is getting plenty of attention, and not just for its star-studded cast, which includes Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton, Brian d’Arcy James, and others. The film, in addition to winning best feature, also took best screenplay, co-written by director Tom McCarthy, and a special jury award for ensemble acting. Bel Powley took home the award for “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” and snatched the best actress win from under Oscar winner and season favorite Cate Blanchett (“Carol”) and other heavy hitters such as Lily Tomlin (“Grandma”), Brie Larson (“Room”), Kristen Wiig (“Welcome to Me”), and Blythe Danner (“I’ll See You...

So here we are, smack dab in the middle of the dog days of summer (and if you don’t get that little saying, try lying out on the sidewalk in 100-degree heat for 15 minutes or so, like Fido does, and see if a light bulb doesn’t go off). The dogs are often howling in movie theaters too—at times it seems as though August has replaced January in the hearts of moviegoers as the dumping ground for pictures not really worthy of our attention (or a serious investment in the marketing department). Movies like Pixels and Fantastic Four have their perverse fascination—just how bad can they possibly be? Both were greeted with reviews so scathing and unyielding in their acidity that studio heads can only pray nothing in October, November or December will be perceived as worse, and I have to admit a certain curiosity. But that...
