From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes instalment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds-barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

The first red-band trailer for the movie has been released (via GameFragger.com), and it introduces us to the franchise's new faces and a few returning fan-favourites. Along the way, there's plenty of the bloody, unhinged violence that's made the video games so beloved.

Released at the height of the pandemic in 2021, Mortal Kombat was a surprise hit with $84.4 million at the worldwide box office. Crucially, it proved a huge draw on the HBO Max streaming platform.

Film is so back. Shooting on Kodak film continues to be both a more popular choice among filmmakers and to gather more Oscar prestige. Review: The Electric State is perhaps Netflix’s most ambitious film to date. Sporting a budget that’s said to be in the $320 million range, which would make it one of the most expensive movies ever made, it’s as lavish and high-concept as anything you’d find in theaters. Yet, it also takes intriguing source material, in this case, Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same title, and turns it into episodic, easy-to-watch fare you can wander in and out of without missing much plot. As such, it’s impressively mounted but still a streaming movie to its core for better or for worse.

A new photo from Mortal Kombat 2's cast is seemingly teasing the look of Karl Urban's Johnny Cage. The upcoming sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat will see Johnny Cage make his debut in the rebooted movie franchise after being teased during its predecessor's ending, where Cole Young (Lewis Tan) travels to Los Angeles to look for Cage. Linden Ashby and Chris Conrad previously portrayed the character in 1995's Mortal Kombat and 1997's Mortal Kombat Annihilation, respectively.

Producer Todd Garner has taken to twitter to share a picture of Mortal Kombat 2's main cast hanging out at a restaurant, as the movie has recently begun filming.

It's clear with each new addition in the "Fast and Furious" franchise that these movies are about family, not physics. What began as "Point Break" with cars has evolved into the ever-more-ridiculous exploits of a super spy team stacked with heroes — and villains and villains turned heroes. From racing the streets with the all-powerful Nos to racing into space, this saga left plausibility in their rearview many moons ago. Luckily, for the most part, the movies are held together thanks to the chemistry of the "Fast Family" and action sequences so knowingly bonkers the audience feels in on the joke. As Mark Kennedy summed up in his review for The Associated Press, "Fast X" is pure popcorn lunacy."

For those of you out there that might not know, Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin's ninth entry in The Fast and the Furious saga is now filming with Vin Diesel returning as Dominic Toretto. And today we have word via franchise star Vin Diesel himself that The Fate of the Furious stars Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren are set to reprise their respective roles for the upcoming Fast & Furious 9.

The last time we saw Mad Max: Fury Road and Monster star Charlize Theron in The Fast and the Furious was in Law Abiding Citizen and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray's The Fate of the Furious. Theron starred in that movie as a criminal mastermind and cyberterrorist named Cipher who coerces Diesel's Dom into working against his team by holding his son and his baby mama (Elsa Pataky's Elena Neves) hostage.

We even get to see Zoe Saldana doing an impression from the classic 80s movie, Coming to America.

Star Trek 3 has not officially announced the title Star Trek Beyond, but writer and star Simon Pegg has openly called the movie that in past interviews. Initial shooting is taking place in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, in Canada. TrekCore have even provided a map of where filming is taking place. Though, it should be noted, no plot details have been revealed at this time.

Malaysian motorcycle action thriller marks Stephen Windon’s directorial debut

Fast & Furious 7 cinematographer Stephen Windon is make his directorial debut with action thriller Full Throttle, produced by Kuala Lumpur-based DragonSlate Media.

Windon is swapping cars for motorcycles in the action thriller, which is written by Todd Slawsby and set to start production in the first quarter of 2016.

Full Throttle will be produced DragonSlate founder Leon Tan. The production team will be led by Andrew Mason, executive producer on The Matrix trilogy and producer on Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner.

The film centres on a motorcycle racer who becomes a courier in Kuala Lumpur following a career-ending crash. When his girlfriend is abducted, he has to race against the clock across the city, all while being blackmailed by a criminal mastermind.

At this point, the entire Fast & Furious franchise has become nothing but an exercise in one-upping itself. Starting with Fast Five‘s gravity-defying cliff jump, Justin Lin took to Fast & Furious 6 with every intention to blow his previous film’s scope away in a haze of Nos residue – and he did. Lin’s antics cemented a fresh tone of absurdity for future filmmakers to follow, and first up is James Wan with his entry into the car-chasing, muscle-bulging, explosion-heavy franchise.

Austin - One of the things that impresses me most about the team that throws the SXSW Film Festival in Austin every year is how adaptable they are. I've seen them roll with all sorts of things, and they seem to me to be open to all sorts of ideas in terms of programming. There was nothing originally scheduled for the Sunday night midnight slot at the Paramount, but when I woke up on Sunday morning, the festival had announced a very special treat for anyone who had a badge for the festival, and anticipation was running high because of which title it was. This coming weekend, I'll be attending the junket for "Furious 7," so I was already scheduled to see the film. But seeing it tonight at the Paramount Theater, completely packed with lunatic movie fans who were all crazy excited to be there was better than any junket screening possibly could be.

Can you talk about the difference between this and the first film?

Lorenzo: I think tone is probably the biggest difference. Paramount came to me with John as the way to do it and looking at his past work I wasn’t sure what that meant in terms of what he’s done and how that would apply to what this was. And so we really talked a great deal initially about, one, he grew up with Joe and he really understood it and so I knew immediately that he had an internal grounding in it that was really good. It wasn’t a fantasy to him. It was part of his childhood. So there was this innate understanding and we talked a lot about tone and what he liked and what he liked about Joe growing up and what he would try and apply to it today – versus what we had done originally.

After having recently celebrated it’s 100th Anniversary, Paramount Pictures offers some exciting things for fans to look forward to. The upcoming slate of films has something for everyone – from families (Rise of The Guardians) to artistic types (Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D) and action junkies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation). And don’t forget the planned $700 million facelift for the only major studio actually located in Hollywood…stay tuned!!

The best Fast and Furious film is finally available on Blu-ray and has tons of things for action junkies to love. After four films about trading pinks with bad guys this latest installment, “Fast Five,” really took the franchise in a bigger, badder and ballsier direction. I have never been a huge fan of the other films, enjoying them as decent guilty pleasure fare, but this movie was an action film lovers dream. A heist film at its core it felt more like “Italian Job 2″ than a F&F film. I especially loved a car chase pulling a vault through Rio de Janeiro, a great fight between Diesel and the Rock and there of course is slight bits of comedy too.

Fast Five does not arrive on Blu-ray and DVD until October 4th, but there will be plenty of high octane action between now and then. Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster will be on hand at the Chicagoland Speedway on September 16 to jumpstart the action of the Nascar Camping World Truck Series race. Fast Five was my personal favorite installment in the franchise, and I am excited for what is to come in Fast Six. Greig Fraser has taken the Milli Award for Australian Cinematographer of the Year for his work on 2009′s Bright Star, at last Saturday’s Acs National Awards in Adelaide.

Other winners include Dion Beebe for the Us feature Nine, Stephen Windon for The Pacific, and Calvin Gardiner for the dramatised documentary I Spry.

Ron Taylor, Valerie Taylor and Malcolm Richards were inducted into the Acs Hall of Fame. The ceremony was dedicated to the memory of cinematographer and owner of Lemac Film and Digital John Bowring Acs, who passed away last month.

Where do you even begin? Let's go with the title: Fast Five. This is the fifth film in a franchise that started in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, and the first sequel's cutesy 2 Fast 2 Furious has nothing on the way the series' makers seem to have given up coming up with anything original. "Fast Five" is what you would call the film casually, tossing it around with fellow viewers, though it feels more like shorthand that cropped up in the production offices and somehow stuck. It's choppy and ugly, and it betrays a total lack of effort on the part of the filmmakers to win over anyone who isn't in the series' crowd of enthusiasts and hangers-on. Wally Pfister has won the top prize at the 2011 American Society of Cinematographers Award ceremony for outstanding in cinematography for his work on Inception. The other nominees in the feature film category were Matthew Libatique, Asc (Black Swan), Danny Cohen, Bsc (The King’s Speech), Jeff Cronenweth, Asc (The Social Network), and Roger Deakins, Asc, Bsc (True Grit).

It was the ninth nomination for Deakins (most of the others have come from various Coen Brothers film) and it was the third nomination for Wally Pfister following Batman Begins and The Dark Knight previously. Cohen, Cronenweth and Libatique were all first-time nominees.

Also Roger Deakins won a career achievement award for his work in features, which was presented by Joel Coen. Jonathan Freeman won in the TV category for Boardwalk Empire, while in the TV movie/miniseries category, Stephen Windon won for The Pacific.

Here's something for those who have wanted to see Inception nominated or awarded with more significant honors than the film has been given so far in the awards season. Sure, the top prize from the American Society of Cinematographers is essentially a technical award, but it is the technical award, and taking the prize is no small honor. Tonight Wally Pfister won the Asc Award for feature achievement for his work on Inception. I've long held that Wally Pfister is one of Christopher Nolan's primary key ingredients in creating effective films. No one has quite the clear, calm eye Pfister does. John V. Soto’s Needle has won Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Marais), Best Cinematography and Best Special Effects at the British Horror Film Festival.

“Our UK Premiere went really well. The crowd loved the film and I was excited for Needle to have so many nominations. To actually win an award, let alone three, against such tough competition, is very gratifying and testament to the long hours and hard work put in by our cast and crew,” said Soto.

The cinematography was in charge of Dop Stephen Windon, and the special effects were done by Cutting Edge and Meg.

135 filmmakers and executives have been invited by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to join its ranks. Recent Oscar nominees and winners such as Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Mo'Nique, Carey Mulligan, Jeremy Renner, Gabourey Sidibe and Christoph Waltz have been invited to join; but even "Saw's" Tobin Bell and "Avatar's" Zoe Saldana received invites.

New members will be "baptized" in an invitation-only reception in September at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills.

AMPAS used to hide their membership roster like the vote tallies but in the information age, they've opened up. Now we get to see the whole list of new invitees each year. I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 135 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2010 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.
