The 8 best (and 6 worst) characters in The Walking Dead
Image
When you're on the air for 11 seasons, people are going to feel some kind of way about your show. There's no clearer example of that than The Walking Dead. AMC's legendary series based on Robert Kirkman's eponymous graphic novel series gripped audiences throughout its decade-long run, making them love, hate, cry, laugh, revolt, and appreciate everything that went down in the post-apocalyptic world. But nothing made them feel more than the characters.

The characters are the lifeblood of The Walking Dead and its many, many spinoffs. Whether it's a noble hero who just wants to do everything they can do ensure that their loved ones survive, or a heinous villain hellbent on exact the most callous kind of revenge, the personalities that popped up throughout the Twd Universe were capable of making us feel all of the feels.

That's still incredibly clear in the Twd Universe spinoffs of today,...

“That Story Cannot End There”: 'The Oa' Gets Surprising Update From Jason Isaacs
Image
While most streaming services get a bad reputation for canceling fan-favorite shows like Westworld, The Winchesters, and Mindhunter, Netflix gets it even worse for canceling fan-favorite shows in their infancy. Sometimes, fan backlash can save a show from getting canceled outright, either by it getting a smaller final season like Superman & Lois, or getting shopped to another platform. In most cases, however, the series stays dead. But that isn’t the case for The Oa.

Six years ago, the sci-fi series was unceremoniously canceled by Netflix, and fans weren’t happy. The series, co-created by Brit Marlingand Zal Batmanglij, was widely loved by fans for a gripping plot, supernatural elements, and fantastical yet grounded storytelling. Its cancellation also left fans on a major cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. But it seems that the creators are quite adamant about finishing their story as Jason Isaacs, who played antagonist Dr. Hunte,...

Netflix's 'The Oa' Gets Surprise Season 3 Update From Jason Isaacs
Image
The Oa, the sci-fi mystery by Netflix, is one of the streamer's signature genre shows, even if it hasn't been in the spotlight lately. Created by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the latter of whom also plays the lead, The Oa was a bit polarizing with audiences upon release, but the critical reception was always good. Season 2 was very well-received too, but it surprisingly got canceled months after the premiere. Since 2019, fans have been pleading for its return, and now star Jason Isaacs has offered a promising update that will give fans something to be excited about.

"We will not let it go," Isaacs said about The Oa when talking to Jo Whiley on her podcast. As reported by Comic Book, Isaacs appeared on the podcast and addressed the Netflix fan-favorite released in 2016. Isaacs plays Hap in the show, which also features actors like Emory Cohen, Phyllis Smith, Brandon Perea,...

Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist’ Gets a Disappointing Update
Image
Fans of the acclaimed Exorcist franchise will sadly not get the highly anticipated reboot anytime soon. Originally scheduled for March 13, 2026, Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist will unfortunately be delayed, as confirmed by the filmmaker himself via Tumblr. Over a year ago, it was announced that Flanagan was writing, directing, and producing “a radical new take” on the horror sequel with the genre producer, Blumhouse, and Morgan Creek. The sequel's announcement followed David Gordon Green's 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer, which was poorly received with only negative reviews from critics.

Flanagan’s The Exorcist reboot is utterly unrelated to Believer and will provide a unique perspective for viewers. The film currently has no revised release date yet, as production hasn’t even started, according to the director. Apparently, he wants to wrap up his current Carrie project, the upcoming Prime Video series revival, before progressing with The Exorcist. In his words:...

"The Dama [Is] a Motherly Figure To Him”: ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 2 Star Explains Why Hershel's Loyalty Is Torn
Image
The second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City has brought with it new challenges for Maggie (Lauren Cohan). It is fair to say that the character has endured her fair share of woe throughout her time on the franchise. Her closest family: her father, Hershel (Scott Wilson), her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun), and her sister, Beth (Emily Kinney), have all perished before her eyes. At the time Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was acquainting his barbed-wire baseball bat, Lucille, with Glenn's head, Maggie was pregnant with their son, Hershel (Logan Kim). Maggie and Negan have since had to share the spotlight in Dead City, and it's been clear that she hasn't forgiven him for his actions. It is a pain that has strained Maggie's relations with her son, and seen his loyalties torn.

While Hershel might not have had the broadest impact on The Walking Dead, his role in...

3 things the 1995 Judge Dredd movie got right (and 2 crucial things it got wrong)
Image
On May 1, the 1995 movie Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone was added to the streaming service Peacock. It's a good time to revisit this adaptation, especially as it celebrates its 30th anniversary next month. It's not the most popular adaptation of a comic book character. In fact, it's not even the most popular adaptation of 2000 Ad's iconic future cop.

But it's not completely without merit, either. While the 2012 adaptation Dredd is definitely the more popular choice, it does make the first attempt easier to accept on its own terms. In fact, while many elements didn't work (two of which in particular stand out), three things also worked surprisingly well.

What works in Judge DreddThe opening block war

The opening ten minutes of Judge Dredd are extremely effective at introducing the audience to Mega-City 1. We get a sense of just how chaotic and violent Dredd's city is and, more importantly, we learn about the Judges.

Ben Stiller's $128M Dark Comedy Lands On Netflix's Global Charts 18 Years Later
Image
Ben Stiller's dark comedy, which made over $128 million at the box office, has landed on Netflix's global chart 18 years after its release. Stiller has been a consistent comedic presence since the 1990s, starting with his sketch comedy series, The Ben Stiller Show. He went on to make guest appearances in television shows like Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and Extras, the last of which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

After beginning his career in television, Stiller transitioned to film and starred in a string of successful studio comedies, including romantic comedies like There's Something About Mary and Along Came Polly, and more absurdist and satirical style comedies such as Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Tropic Thunder. Since the mid-2010s, Stiller has shifted back to television, directing episodes of Severance and other shows. However, many of Stiller's...

The Walking Dead Creator Robert Kirkman Regrets Killing Off One Character Too Soon
Image
If you were an actor in the 2010s looking for job security, "The Walking Dead" was not the show for you. The series was famous for killing major characters in a way that makes rewatching the early seasons extra depressing. You'll be enjoying a season 1 scene with Andrea (Laurie Holden), Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and Shane (Jon Bernthal), only to remember that not a single one of them made it past season 3. Some characters did manage to stick around for surprisingly long, like Carol (Melissa McBride) or Daryl (Norman Reedus), but most people on the show only stuck around for two or three seasons tops.

Case in point: Tyreese (Chad Coleman) was introduced midway through season 3 before being killed off halfway through season 5. Admittedly, though, casual fans didn't have much hope for Tyreese in particular, given the early seasons' suspicious tendency of killing off established Black characters...

Chucky and Beyond: Brad Dourif’s 10 Most Memorable Horror Roles
Image
Veteran actor Brad Dourif may have earned a reputation for playing depraved sociopaths over his extensive career, but his feature debut role of Billy Bibbit in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest earned him an Oscar nomination at the young age of 24.

A distinct voice, impressive intensity, and a dynamic range have made Dourif a bit of a chameleon, making him one of the best actors of all time whose talents often go overlooked.

From sweet, quiet roles like Billy Bibbit to the grizzled yet morally pure Doc Cochran of Deadwood, Dourif can deftly handle it all. But it’s his high-intensity style that makes him so effective in horror, above all.

While he’s semi-retired now, save for mostly voice-acting work as a certain beloved horror icon, we look back at Brad Dourif’s 10 most memorable genre roles in celebration of his birthday on March 18.

When the Governor dies in The Walking Dead (and how it happens)
Image
AMC's The Walking Dead was must-watch television for over a decade. The zombie/apocalypse TV series saw Rick Grimes and his merry band of survivors attempt to outlast the dangers of the undead in a world with no laws, no boundaries, and very little hope. And perhaps the scariest thing about the entire series is that, of all the threats that came their way, the most dangerous were the human ones.

It's insane to think about, but over the course of the show's 11-season run, Rick, Daryl Dixon, Carol Peletier, Maggie and Glenn Rhee, and all of the other survivors encountered some dastardly threats (some still do on the shared universe's many spinoffs). From Negan to The Commonwealth, there were dangers aplenty, but perhaps the most notorious of them all was The Governor.

The first major human threat, Phillip Blake a.k.a. The Governor, was portrayed by David Morrissey...

The Walking Dead's 10 Best Maggie Episodes Of All Time Ranked

Lauren Cohan plays one of the most popular characters on The Walking Dead, and the best Maggie episodes show why she’s such a beloved presence. First introduced in The Walking Dead season 2, Maggie started the show as the sheltered yet capable daughter of the farmer, Hershel (Scott Wilson). She also immediately caught the eye of fellow fan-favorite, Glenn (Steven Yuen), and the pair’s journey to becoming a couple is still considered one of the best Twd romance arcs.

However, their relationship would be cut tragically short by the introduction of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). While losing her husband was traumatizing for Maggie, it also marked the start of the character arc that saw her become the fearless hero of the zombie apocalypse of The Walking Dead season 11 and spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City. 10 Terrifying Non-Horror Movies That Are Based On A True Story
Image
Contains discussion of death, torture, and sexual assault.

By its very nature, horror is designed to disturb, provoke, and scare its audience. As such, it comes as little surprise that horror has traditionally been the genre associated with the scariest movies of all time. However, cinema has played host to a number of offerings from outside the genre that are just as terrifying as the scariest horror film, if not more so. While film fans may primarily look to the best horror movies of all time for their cinematic scares, a film's ability to terrify its audience is by no means limited to one genre.

This status quo is only compounded when the movie draws inspiration from an unbelievable true story. The fact that the horrific events being depicted by the movie in question are based in reality lends an eerie air of authenticity to proceedings, one that emphasizes the...

10 Great TV Shows That Got Way Too Confusing
Image
Its not uncommon for a TV show to grow creatively as it gains popularity, and the creators are given a bit more artistic freedom, especially in fantasy or sci-fi shows. To some viewers, this can feel like bait and switch, while to others this just strengthens the appeal.

In many cases, getting confusing doesnt necessarily mean that a show is too esoteric to be enjoyable, but rather that the show risked losing viewers who needed to understand every nuance. On the other hand, fans of these strange shows are further intrigued by the confusion, committing to multiple rewatches in an attempt to discover hidden meanings.

Through its 11-season run, The Walking Dead never shied away from killing off main characters. It started with characters like Shane (Jon Bernthal) and Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and hit its peak with people like Hershel (Scott Wilson) and Glenn (Steven Yuen). But one death in particular came as a complete shock: that of Ricks (Andrew Lincoln) son, Carl (Chandler Riggs). With an incredible arc through the seasons, developing from a whiny child to a brave and courageous young man, it seemed like there was so much more of Carls story to tell.

However, his life was cut short when Carl perished from a bite on his torso after trying to heroically save others. He had an opportunity to say his goodbyes in one of the most heart-wrenching moments on the show. The situation...

Melissa McBride & Daryl Dixon Director React To Season 2 Premiere's Major Walking Dead Callback: "Really Was Wild"

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 1!The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon star Melissa McBride and director Greg Nicotero react to the season 2 premiere's major callback to The Walking Dead, alongside its meaning for Carol (McBride). During Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 1, Carol comes across a survivor named Ash (Manish Dayal) who offers her sanctuary, specifically saying she can stay in his barn for the night. This triggers a flashback to The Walking Dead season 2, episode 7, when her daughter, Sofia (Madison Lintz), walked out of Hershel's (Scott Wilson) barn as a zombie. The scene was recreated for the spinoff's season premiere.

Monster (2003) – What Really Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
When we think of monsters on this channel, most of the time its from a fictional, mythical, or legendary monster like the Mummy, Wolfman, Dracula, or Frankenstein’s Monster. On this specific show, however, a Monster can take on a whole new meaning. I joke that half of these episodes will be about reportedly true possessions and while that will probably hold fast, there is another type of monster we have discussed a few times. The guy that loosely inspired the Scream killings, Henry from Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and today’s subject Aileen Wuornos. The movie made about her is literally called Monster and put director Patty Jenkins and star Charlize Theron, at least in terms of her being seen as an A list actor who can actually act, on the map. It’s a straightforward telling of a murderer that of course adds nuance and even...

This Beloved The Walking Dead Character Is Much Darker Than Fans Realize
Image
Most fans of The Walking Dead remember Hershel Greene as the wise and venerable member of the group for the first few seasons of the show. Ever a voice of compassion, Hershel was meant to be the older character who tries to convince the group to hold on to their humanity, even at the worst of times. This attitude, unfortunately, got him killed by the Governor in Season 4 of the show, leaving a gaping hole in the group that was still felt years after the horrific event. However, it might interest fans to know that the comic book version of Hershel was far darker than his television counterpart.

This is to be expected. Comics can get away with far more gruesome things than television can, and it is this freedom that gives them their staying power. That being said, Hershel's character arc in the comics was far more depressing. Readers...

Why Dale Left Twd: The Controversial Reason Jeffrey DeMunn Wanted His Character Killed
Image
The Walking Dead is no stranger to killing off fan favorites, main characters, and just about anything that breathes. The hit post-apocalyptic series based on Robert Kirkman's graphic novel series of the same name follows a group of survivors as they try to navigate a new and dangerous world that has become overrun with flesh-eating zombies.

Jeffrey DeMunn starred in the first two seasons of the AMC series as Dale Horvath, an aging survivor who is part of Rick Grimes' original group in Atlanta. Although Dale was a fan-favorite character, he was shockingly killed off in Season 2. While not the last major character to suddenly be dispatched before his time, Dale's death was especially surprising to fans of the original graphic novels, which saw his character survive much longer. Some fans might be surprised to learn that the real reason for DeMunn's departure stems from behind-the-scenes issues, not a...

10 Predictable TV Show Deaths We All Saw Coming
Image
Warning: This list contains spoilers for many character deaths from popular TV shows.

TV shows have character types inherently at risk of dying, like parents and mentors, to drive plot complications. The challenge for showrunners is to make impactful character deaths, even if the audience can predict them. Some TV shows, like Game of Thrones, face the dilemma of needing to keep key characters alive for long-term arcs.

There are some deaths in TV shows that no one saw coming, and others everyone saw coming from a mile away. Certain TV character types are always in danger of being killed off because of the ways their deaths inherently drive plot complications: parents, mentors, etc. In other cases, the story might set up a character's death or even necessitate one, leading to a process of elimination where the audience determines which character the story doesn't need for future seasons.

10 Canceled TV Shows That Could Still Realistically Return
Image
The cancellation of beloved TV shows like The Oa and Mindhunter can leave fans with unanswered questions and disappointment. Fans' support through campaigns and demonstrations can sometimes save a show from being canceled due to strong audience interest. Reboots and revivals of canceled TV shows like Hannibal and Gossip Girl are possible if actors, writers, and showrunners are willing to return.

When a TV show is canceled, it's normal for audience members and the show's creators to hold out hope that it might return. While some series reach their natural conclusion or have always planned to have a limited number of seasons, others are cut short before their time, leaving unanswered questions and unfinished character arcs. This can be immensely disappointing, especially if audiences have spent years becoming invested in the story, only to never discover how it ends. Fortunately, the last few years have seen an increase in the...

10 The Walking Dead Moments That Made Viewers Quit The Show
Image
The Walking Dead had some surprising moments that made viewers quit the show. Controversial character deaths, including Lori and Andrea's, were polarizing for fans. Major events like the return of the Governor and Rick's exit led some viewers to stop watching.

The Walking Dead was one of the most successful TV shows ever, but some moments were too much for viewers. The Walking Dead ran for 11 seasons from 2010 to 2022. For a show that utilized time jumps, some storylines moved painstakingly slowly and had a tedious resolution. Other developments were controversial because of the impact they had on major characters.

With massive viewership in its earlier seasons, many episodes after big events suffered from notably lower numbers than usual. While some of these viewers would eventually return, even lasting to The Walking Dead series finale, others had their fill earlier, with one moment causing them to quit the show for good.

Interestingly, some were beloved by fans because of their heroism, while others were admired because of how compelling they were as a season’s antagonist. As the core group of survivors grew and changed from season to season, a few long-running and even new characters emerged as the ones fans loved the most.

Updated on April 6, 2023 by Michael Colwander: Rick Grimes and Michonne have just made their long-awaited return in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. With Maggie and Negan starring in Dead City and Daryl and Carol starring in Daryl Dixon, many fan-favorite characters have seen extended...

The Walking Dead: Carl Grimes had an Important Mission in the Comics
Image
Carl Grimes was a key player in the comic version of The Walking Dead. In the TV show, Carl, while important, made a distinct shift in his narrative that changed the franchise's trajectory. Due to many elements, it was evident from the start that The Walking Dead's comic version of Carl was much more important.

The Walking Dead as a franchise has done remarkable things with a genre that had otherwise been used a thousand times over. It reinvigorated the idea of the zombie apocalypse by focusing not on the shambling hoards of undead (though they are still a major part of the story), but the humans who managed to survive them. This included how these individual characters chose to survive, what that did to them, and how they ultimately overcame or succumbed to the bleak world they now found themselves in. It's unsurprising then that the comic went...

The Walking Dead: Maggie's Family Tree Explained (In Full)
Image
The Greene farm in season 2 of The Walking Dead provided a moment of safety and hope before it was destroyed by a zombie horde. Hershel, Maggie's father, played a key role in treating gunshot wounds and became a mentor to Rick before being killed by The Governor. Glenn, Maggie's husband, evolved from a naive survivor to a fan-favorite character who was controversially killed by Negan, leaving Maggie devastated.

While their numbers certainly decreased over various seasons of The Walking Dead, Maggie (Lauren Cohen) has a big family tree. The second season of AMC's zombie opus is often considered one of the worst, due to the lack of action and the fact most of it is spent hanging around a farm. While this was the result of budget cuts, in hindsight this pitstop paid off in future seasons. It was the last moment the survivors felt truly safe and there...

The episode of Revisited covering The Exorcist III was Written and Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

In 1973 William Friedkin unleashed his iconic horror film The Exorcist upon the masses. Since its release, it has been widely regarded as one of the most influential and iconic horror films of all time and would go on to have a huge cultural impact. It tapped into primal fears and because of its powerful storytelling, was able to captivate and terrify audiences. I think its safe to say this secured its status as a timeless horror classic. But we’re not here to discuss a movie that has been dissected, overanalyzed, added to most people’s Top 4 films on Letterboxd and reviewed by everyone and their mothers. No, in this episode we want to talk about the “true sequel” to this iconic film…...

Judge Dredd screenwriter Steven E. de Souza on the film’s violence and marketing
A few years ago, director Oliver Harper made a documentary called In Search of the Last Action Heroes, which was described as “a comprehensive retrospective of the ’80s and ’90s action film genre.” One of the people interviewed for that documentary was screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who was a major contributor to the action genre in those decades, working on the likes of 48 Hrs., Commando, The Running Man, Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Hudson Hawk, Ricochet, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Street Fighter, among others… with one of the others being the much-maligned Sylvester Stallone comic book movie Judge Dredd. In a moment that didn’t make it into the final cut of In Search of the Last Action Heroes, de Souza discussed the issues that Judge Dredd ran into, including bad marketing and a struggle to secure an R rating.
