Unlike men’s wrestling, the women’s wrestling division has been on a never-ending process of revolution, where the performers constantly battle to make themselves a part of the main event. Professional wrestling is unpredictable. Many in the sport carve out long and successful careers, some leave it in the middle, and are forgotten sooner or later. Sable is a classic example of the latter. But her sudden exit has often been a subject of discussion amongst WWE fans.

Real Reason Why Trish Stratus Never Posed N*de for Playboy Despite ‘Raunchy’ WWE Diva Status
Image
The women’s division in WWE is currently experiencing an unprecedented era of excellence, filled with supremely talented and athletically gifted performers. WWE has set a global standard for women’s wrestling, showcasing it as a serious and respected aspect of the sport. Several trailblazing figures laid the foundation for this evolution, none more iconic than Trish Stratus.

However, the landscape during the early 2000s was vastly different. At the time, WWE’s women’s division, then branded as the Divas, was often criticized for prioritizing the sexualization of its performers over their in-ring capabilities. Many female talents were presented more as entertainers than athletes, with less focus on wrestling skill and storytelling.

WWE has been the home of some of the greatest superstars in the world. Among them, the global juggernaut has seen an influx of many talented and remarkable athletes who changed the game and paved the way for future generations to succeed.

Vince McMahon Joins Brock Lesnar’s Wife Sable in the Group of Stars Whose Names Are Banned From WWE Programming

Vince McMahon was leading a fairly perfect life after having co-founded the modern WWE with his wife, Linda McMahon. But then everything came crashing down on him with a series of serious allegations from a former employee that the 78-year-old McMahon had to resign from his position as the CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment.

Yet, what’s worse is that his sad story didn’t even end with this sacrifice. Opinionated: Who Should be the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2020?
Every year on the lead up to WrestleMania we get bursts or rumours and announcements about which wrestlers and/or personalities will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania weekend. It’s become a big part of the weekend each April, and many fans enjoy the show, seeing former superstars getting a chance to shine once more as they deliver a speech in front of their peers and adoring fans. It’s bloody lovely, quite frankly.

So, I thought, as seen as WrestleMania is a good few months off, it would be a good time to make some half-predictions, as well as talk about who I think Should be in the Hall of Fame. There are, after all, some huge names missing from that place, and it’s always fun to discuss this stuff. I will likely talk about Way too many people for one single class,...

WWE Network Original Reviews: Table for Three 5×07 – Ladies Luncheon
I’ve been a fan of Table for Three since it began a few years back. It’s a super-fun concept, and allows three wrestling personalities to sit down and chit-chat for twenty-five minutes about their relationship to each other and their careers. I mean, it’s a pretty short program, so it never really gets going in terms of in-depth conversation of incredible revelations, but it’s entertaining none-the-less, and so I thought I’d start talking a bit about the episodes as they land, sadly… the episode that just landed is perhaps one of the least interesting in a while.

That’s not to say the new episode of Table for Three is unwatchable or bad, because it isn’t. It just isn’t particularly interesting, either. The Ladies Luncheon episode features Mandy-Rose, Carmella and former WWE Diva (remember those?) and 2019 WWE Hall of Famer, Torrie Wilson. I...

Project Runway Recap: Which Designer Shot Her Selfie in the Foot?
Project Runway (2004)
“You know, I’m starting to smell something,” Detective Zac Posen declared during Thursday’s Project Runway critiques. “I don’t like what’s going on.”

IcymiLast Week’s Project Runway Recap: Descendants Challenge Pits Good vs. Evil

He arrived at this conclusion (of sorts) after Tim Gunn told the judges that the reason Claire’s look appeared “unfinished” — complete with a pair of way-too-short shorts that Heidi Klum did not want to see on the streets — was because she got caught up helping Shawn with her look. He did, of course, note that helping another designer doesn’t go against any official rule.

James Franco, Zachary Quinto, and Emma Roberts in I Am Michael (2015)
The 17 Best Indie Movies of 2017 (So Far)
James Franco, Zachary Quinto, and Emma Roberts in I Am Michael (2015)
Yes, we know: It’s a little premature to assemble a list of the best movies of the year when there’s so much left of it. We have yet to see a lot of exciting new work from major auteurs like Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”), Alexander Payne (“Downsizing”), and Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), not to mention heavy-hitting studio-produced spectacles like “Blade Runner 2049” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” But those last two wouldn’t even qualify for this list of the best independent films of the year, anyway, and they’ll have plenty of time to hog the spotlight.

Fortunately, we’ve found plenty of movies from around the world to celebrate, and while they haven’t all been box office sensations, they provide overwhelming evidence that the art form is thriving well into the second decade of the new millennium, and shows no signs of slowing down.

Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Jason Ritter, Alia Shawkat, Cobie Smulders, Vincent Piazza, Ben Schwartz, and David Bernon in The Intervention (2016)
Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present and future.

Melanie Lynskey was just 16 when she first broke into Hollywood, thanks to a bold and bright turn opposite Kate Winslet in Peter Jackson’s fact-based “Heavenly Creatures.” Since then, she’s carved out a career that’s wholly her own, one that includes roles in tiny indies like “Hello I Must Be Going” and big studio films like “Sweet Home Alabama,” exceedingly popular television series like “Two and a Half Men” (when asked about the roles she’s recognized most for, Lynskey laughed and said, “At the airport, it’s ‘Two and Half Men'”) and critical darlings like “Togetherness” — and just about everything in between.

But one thing has held true from the start: Lynskey requires great material. She could scarcely ask for better than the kind she got in Clea DuVall’s directorial debut, “The Intervention.

10 Shortest WrestleMania Matches Of All Time
WWE

WrestleMania has played host to some of the longest matches in WWE history, which is befitting an event of its stature. We all remember Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels going over an hour in their Ironman stalemate at WrestleMania Xii. Triple H and The Undertaker have both been involved in three matches that hit the half hour mark, with Shawn Michaels and The Rock hitting that mark twice also.

WrestleMania 31 was the first ‘Mania since X8 not to feature at least one match going over 20 minutes, with WrestleMania XXX containing four such epic bouts. Despite this, seven matches last year did go past the 10 minute mark. WrestleMania is where professional wrestling often gets to show itself off as the wonderful performance art it is, so performers will be hoping to get longer than three minutes to show the world what they’re about.

It doesn’t always work out that way however.

Cinema Tropical Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary with Festival at Museum of the Moving Image
Cinema Tropical, the acclaimed New York-based organization dedicated to promoting Latin American cinema in the United States, is celebrating its 15th Anniversary with the 2016 edition of the Cinema Tropical Festival presented with the Museum of the Moving Image. Presenting six feature films from Argentina, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, and Puerto Rico, the festival will feature select winners and nominees from the 6th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards, which were announced at a special ceremony at the New York Times Company headquarters last month.

Founded in 2001 by Carlos A. Gutiérrez and Monika Wagenberg with the mission of distributing, programming and promoting what was to become the biggest boom of Latin American cinema in decades, Cinema Tropical has become the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States. In its 15 years of existence, it has theatrically released 25 Latin American feature films, more than any other U.S. distributor, and has produced numerous film series with multiple cultural organizations. Through a diversity of programs and initiatives, Cinema Tropical is thriving as a dynamic and groundbreaking 501(c)(3) non-profit media arts organization experimenting in the creation of better and more effective strategies for the distribution and exhibition of foreign cinema in this country.

The Cinema Tropical Festival brings the best of contemporary Latin American cinema to New York City audiences, offering a chance to experience the dynamic and inventive film productions from the region. The opening night screening of "Mala Mala," winner of the Cinema Tropical Award for Best U.S. Latino Film, will be followed a Q&A with filmmakers Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini, and a 15th Anniversary celebration reception.

The festival will feature the U.S. premiere of the Tiger Award winner "Videophilia (and Other Viral Syndromes") by Juan Daniel F. Molero, which became the first Peruvian film ever to receive the top prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival, with the filmmaker in attendance. The lineup also includes the New York premieres of Juan Schnitman’s debut feature "The Fire," winner of the Best Film Award at the Transylvania Film Festival, and Abner Benaim’s "Invasión," Panama’s first film to be submitted for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

From Guatemala, Best First Film winner and recipient of the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize at the 2015 Berlinale, Jayro Bustamante’s "Ixcanul" will screen on Saturday. The Argentine film "Jauja" by Lisandro Alonso starring Viggo Mortensen, and winner of the Cinema Tropical for Best Latin American Film of the Year, will close out the Festival on Sunday evening.

Other winners at the Cinema Tropical included "Invasion" (Panama) for Best Documentary Film, "Ixcanul" (Guatemala) for Best First Film "Mala Mala" for Best U.S. Latino Film, Pablo Larraín ("The Club," Chile) for Best Director, Feature Film, and Betzabé García ("Kings of Nowhere," Mexico) for Best Director, Documentary.

Schedule:

"Mala Mala"

(Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini, USA/Puerto Rico, color, 87 min. In Spanish and English with English subtitles)

Winner Best U.S. Latino Film – Cinema Tropical Awards The critically acclaimed Mala Mala explores the intimate moments, performances, friendships and activism of trans identifying people, drag queens and others who defy typical gender identities in Puerto Rico. The film features Ivana, an activist; Soraya, an older sex-change pioneer; Sandy, a prostitute looking to make a change; and Samantha and Paxx, both of whom struggle with the quality of medical resources available to assist in their transition. Hailed as “Sensitive and thoughtful” by the New York Times and winner of the audience award for documentary film at the Tribeca Film Festival, Mala Mala affirms that the quest to find oneself can be both difficult and beautiful. A Strand Releasing release. Q&A with filmmakers, reception to follow.

Friday, February 26, 7:00pm

"Invasion"

(Invasión, Abner Benaim, Panama/Argentina, 2014, 93 min. In Spanish with English subtitles) New York Premiere Winner, Best Documentary – Cinema Tropical Awards Using reenactments and interviews, filmmaker Abner Benaim documents the collective memory -as well as the selective amnesia- of his fellow Panamanians around the 1989 U.S. invasion to overthrow General Manuel Noriega. The lives of the people of the Central American nation were deeply shaken by the American military incursion. Invasion–Panama’s first film to be submitted for the Best Foreign Language Oscar– is a witty and engaging documentary that talks about the perils of sovereignty, democracy and endangered virtues of today’s ultra-capitalist world. The film not only explores the mechanisms in which memory is turned into history, but holds a mirror to the present to show how the recent past shapes the current Panama.

Saturday, February 27, 12:30pm

"Ixcanul"

(Jayro Bustamante, Guatemala/France, 2015, 93 min. In Kaqchikel and Spanish with English subtitles)

Winner, Best First Film – Cinema Tropical Awards

Winner of the Berlinale’s Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize–the top honor ever won by a Central American film– Ixcanul marks the auspicious debut of Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante. The film follows María (played by María Mercedes Coroy), a 17-year-old Mayan girl who lives and works in a coffee plantation that sits at the base of an active volcano in Guatemala. Although Maria dreams of going to the 'big city,' her condition as an indigenous woman does not permit her to change her destiny, and an arranged wedding is waiting for her. A snake bite forces her to go out into the modern world where her life is saved, but at a steep price. Ixcanul is a beautiful and poignant meditation on the clash between tradition and modernity. A Kino Lorber release.

Saturday, February 27, 3:00pm

"The Fire"

(El incendio, Juan Schnitman, Argentina, 2015, 95 min. In Spanish with English subtitles) New York Premiere Nominated, Best First Film – Cinema Tropical Awards On the way to closing the contract on their first home, Lucía and Marcelo withdraw a hundred thousand dollars in cash from their bank. The seller can’t make it to the signing and it gets postponed to the next day. Frustrated, they head back to their old place and put the money away. The next 24 hours will unveil the true nature of their love, the crisis they are in, and the violence within themselves. “A riveting chamber piece of subtle shifts and evenhanded power struggles (Variety), Schnitman’s debut feature film was the winner of the Best Film Award at the Transylvania Film Festival.

Saturday, February 27, 5:00pm

"Videophilia (And Other Viral Syndromes)"

(Videofilia (y otros síndromes virales), Juan Daniel F. Molero, Peru/USA, 2015, color, 102 min. In Spanish with English subtitles) U.S. Premiere Nominated, Best First Film – Cinema Tropical Awards The first Peruvian film to ever win the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Videophilia (and Other Viral Syndromes) follows Luz, a teenage misfit from Lima who meets online Junior, a weird slacker who is obsessed with conspiracy theories, Mayan prophecies of the end of the world, and underground porn. They try to hook up in the real life but supernatural events start to unfold to guide their destinies. Set in Lima, Juan Daniel F. Molero’s exhilarating debut fiction film is a playful mashup of internet cafes, slackers, not-so-innocent schoolgirls, amateur porn, Google Glass, acid trips and guinea pigs as extras in an exorcism.

Q&A with filmmaker

Saturday, February 27, 7:00pm

"Jauja"

(Lisandro Alonso, Argentina/Denmark/France/Mexico, 2014, color, 108 min. In Danish and Spanish with English subtitles) Winner Best Fiction Film – Cinema Tropical Awards An astonishingly beautiful and gripping Western starring Viggo Mortensen, Jauja begins in a remote outpost in Patagonia during the late 1800s. Captain Gunnar Dinesen has come from abroad with his fifteen year-old daughter to take an engineering job with the Argentine army. Being the only female in the area, Ingeborg creates quite a stir among the men. She falls in love with a young soldier, and one night they run away together. When Dinesen realizes what has happened, he decides to venture into enemy territory, against his men’s wishes, to find the young couple. Featuring a superb performance from Mortensen, Jauja (the name suggests a fabled city of riches sought by European explorers) is the story of a man’s desperate search for his daughter, a solitary quest that takes him to a place beyond time, where the past vanishes and the future has no meaning. A Cinema Guild release.

10 WWE Diva Matches That Were Basically Porn
WWE.com

Vince McMahon’s vision of women in WWE has always been about sex appeal. Even now, with the so-called Divas Revolution, the women involved are all very attractive. While the focus has become more about in-ring ability, the ladies are still kitted out in sexy attire and done up to look like beauty queens.

In some ways, you can’t blame Vince. Sex sells and he is merely giving the mass public what they want. Pro wrestling has always been about what draws best, and attractive women are an easy selling point to the key 18-35 year old male demographic. On the flip side, when WWE have focused on in-ring women’s wrestling, it hasn’t drawn well, so McMahon’s reluctance to push women is based on history and business.

The fact is, Divas were bigger for the company back in the early 2000’s, when they competed...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Curtains
When one looks back at mid ‘70s to early ‘80s horror, it’s quite surprising to see how many Canadian made films are nestled among fan favorites. Titles such as Black Christmas, Shivers, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, and My Bloody Valentine continue to delight and shock veteran horror lovers or those just starting their jagged journey down the terror path. There is one, however, that due to a troubled production and poor distribution, seems relegated to the discount bins of time. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on, uh, Curtains (1983), an unsung slasher weirder than a sack full of rabid beavers.

Released by Jensen Farley Pictures in March of ’83 in the Us, and September of ’84 by Norstar Releasing in (my home and) native land, Curtains received a very limited release in both countries, but coming as it did at a time when the Canadian film industry had...

Torrie Wilson Asked About Shooting A Porn Video
TMZ recently caught up with Torrie Wilson, asking her if she would ever consider shooting a porn video like Tammy ‘Sunny’ Sytch.

Torrie laughed the suggestion off, offering a firm “no” to the idea. The reporter then said Sunny was making over one hundred thousand dollars for the porn role, and yet still, Wilson blew the idea off.

The fact is, she doesn’t need the money: she was one of the very best paid WWE Divas, and then had a four year relationship with multi millionaire baseball star Alex Rodriguez from 2011 to 2015.

In contrast, Sunny was gone from WWE before the late nineties boom really kicked in. She had resorted to Skype sex chats in recent months, just to make a few hundred dollars here and there, and clearly the money for the sex tape was much needed and could fix a lot of her problems.

Wilson could have...

The follow up to Ted, the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time, Ted 2 features more of the hysterically raunchy banter that has made writer-director-actor Seth MacFarlane an entertainment world powerhouse—as well as a touching story of brotherly love. Both the Blu-ray™ and DVD include an Unrated extended edition that features never-before-seen footage that was too rude for the cinema, but makes this year’s most outrageous comedy the perfect gift for fans of this very adult spin on a childhood icon.

12 Times WWE Tried To Convince You Wrestlers Were Related
WWE.com

What’s the one thing that every single member of the WWE Universe has in common? Family. How have WWE ensured they garner a reaction from their Universe in a storyline more times than they would care to mention? Have a family at the centre of any commotion!

WWE is all about connecting with its Universe, and one of the easiest ways to do this is to play the family card; calling on those everyday scenarios that happen in every household and ramping them up to 11.

This is a tactic that has been used quite literally since the beginning of time and doesn’t seem to be letting up. After all, family storylines are often the most compelling inside the ring due to the backstories you can create; just look at The Undertaker and Kane as an example of this happening…

Here are 12 examples of when WWE tricked...

WCW/Ecw Alliance – Where Are They Now?
WWE/Showtime

Can you believe it’s been nearly fifteen years since the Invasion angle? Fifteen years since Lance Storm showed up on Raw and blasted Perry Saturn with a superkick. Fifteen years since Ecw and WCW joined forces to try and take down Vince McMahon and the WWE. Fifteen years since WWE screwed up the biggest money angle in wrestling history…

How time flies, huh? A lot has happened in WWE in that time, obviously, and the wrestling landscape looks a lot different today. A lot had also happened to those that made up the WCW and Ecw Alliance. Made up of guys and gals from the recently closed companies (although a lot of them had been under WWE contract for some time), the invaders had very different fortunes when it came time for the angle to end – some didn’t even make it that far.

So what exactly...

10 Former WWE Superstars Who Will Never Return
WWE.com

When it comes to former superstars and their returns to WWE, fans are taught to never say never. After all, the company’s facilitated some of the most improbable second comings of prodigal sons and daughters that most analysts could imagine — from Bruno Sammartino, who badmouthed WWE’s product for years before accepting induction into the 2013 Hall of Fame class; to Sable, who angered her co-workers, sued the company, and came back to work an angle with Torrie Wilson; to Hulk Hogan, who joined WCW, made it the number one wrestling promotion in the world, returned to WWE, joined Tna, failed to work the same magic, and returned to WWE once again. The company and their superstars have made it perfectly clear that there are very few doors that are permanently shut.

Still, there are some superstars and divas with whom, for whatever reason, the company’s bad...

10 Wrestling Facts We Didn’t Know Last Week (June 26)
WWE.com

There’s still weeks to go until WWE presents their next Pay-Per-View, Battleground on the WWE Network. Events are still offered via more traditional means, which is why they’re still classed as PPV events, but numbers have obviously fallen dramatically since the company started their own subscription-based model last year.

For example, WWE Payback, which took place on May 17th, 2015 managed just 54,000 buys in total. Only 19,000 of those were from the United States, with the remaining 35,000 coming from overseas. The show was headlined by a Fatal-4-Way encounter, as Seth Rollins defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against challengers Randy Orton, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose.

It’s interesting to note that the overall number is down from 2014’s Payback show, which pulled in 67,000 buys. That event was capped off by a bumper No Holds Barred Elimination match, pitting The Shield against Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista and...

Doctor Who: the nerdy in-jokes from series 2
From ampersands to The Apprentice, from dinner ladies to Dirty Den, here's a selection of nerdy in-jokes from Doctor Who series 2...

Last month we took a look at Doctor Who Series One as it celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Specifically, we delved deep into the murky world of in-jokes and sweet nerdy references.

Let’s take another trip back in time and have a look at the more notable and interesting references and in-jokes from Doctor Who Series Two, starring David Tennant and Billie Piper, where the credit of “Doctor Who” had been changed back to “The Doctor”. Pfft, party poopers.

New Earth

Old-skool fans would have been forgiven for being excited at the prospect, given that “New Earth” was a planet mentioned in the 1974 classic Invasion Of The Dinosaurs (though it didn’t actually exist in that story, it was a fake world). But all fans could get excited at...

10 WWE Romances You Totally Forgot About
WWE.com

Romance storylines in World Wrestling Entertainment have been a part of “sports entertainment” since the business began and will continue to be a part of storylines. Some of these stories are things we remember very well because they lead to high profile success like Triple H and Stephanie or Edge and Lita. A great romance story can go a long way to helping the career of both parties.

Just like there are great romance angles, there are also ones that are awful and also forgotten about by the masses. These aren’t the ones that are the worst. They’re just ones that fell under the radar.

What’s forgotten and what’s remembered? Everybody is different when it comes to that. For example that Al Wilson/Dawn Marie story was terrible in a lot of ways, but it’s not forgotten thanks to thinks like Dawn making out with Torrie Wilson.
