‘Damned If You Do’ Trailer: Gianni Di Gregorio’s Comedic Reflection On Love & Family Closes Venice’s Giornate Degli Autori
Image
Exclusive: Italian writer and director Gianni Di Gregorio, who won Venice’s Luigi de Laurentiis prize for best first film at the age of 60 in 2008 for breakout comedy Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo di Ferragosto), returns to the Lido this year with his new film.

Deadline can reveal the trailer for the work, titled Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don’t (Come ti muovi, sbagli), which will premiere as the closing film of Venice parallel section Giornate degli Autori.

Di Gregorio stars as a retired professor devoted to avoiding all the nuisances of daily life and keeping trouble at bay enough. At seventy, he has finally found peace: a nice home, a decent pension, good friends to joke with, and a lady companion.

This life is turned upside down by the unexpected arrival of his daughter, who is going through a marital crisis, with her two incredibly demanding children in tow.

Arya Kills Cersei Wearing Jaime’s Face? The Winds of Winter Theory That Could Spark a New War
Image
Cersei Lannister had been on Arya Stark’s list of names for quite some time, and for eight seasons, fans of Game of Thrones expected a showdown between her and the queen—of course, in the most unexpected way.

Having spent two seasons in the House of Black and White to learn the ways of the Faceless Men, Arya gave us the impression that she would use this newfound skill to exact her revenge. Unfortunately, it did not happen in the show, but The Winds of Winter could deliver this.

Theory: Arya Murders Cersei While Pretending as Jaime in The Winds of Winter Tom Wlaschiha and Maisie Williams in Game of Thrones / Credits: HBO

It has been a long-standing theory within the community that Arya will finally exact revenge on Cersei by using her most lethal skill: wearing someone else’s face and killing her mercilessly. In order not to...

Yunan Review: Solitude on the Hallig Shores
Image
“Yunan” unfolds as a measured exploration of one man’s search for solace. Munir, a Hamburg-based novelist weighed down by chronic stress and a sense of dislocation, arrives on Germany’s marsh-flooded Hallig islands under a doctor’s recommendation to rest. Stripped of familiar routines, he confronts his own isolation amid windswept pastures and salt-stung air.

Director Ameer Fakher Eldin fashions this film as the second installment of his ‘Homeland’ project, following 2021’s debut. Coproduced across Palestine, Jordan, Canada, Germany, Italy and France, the movie bridges narratives of Middle Eastern displacement with European landscapes. This international partnership brings authenticity to a story centered on exile and human connection.

The film’s heartbeat is its unhurried tone, a naturalistic drama that alternates between Munir’s real-world encounters and poetic interludes drawn from a fragmentary fable. These dream-like sequences echo Abbasid poetry, weaving cultural symbolism into the stark northern coast.

Why ‘Stranger Things’ Actor Eduardo Franco Won’t Return for Season 5?
Image
Something feels off as we count down to the final season of Stranger Things, and fans have noticed it, too. Among the returning cast, one familiar face is nowhere to be seen. Eduardo Franco, who played Argyle, hasn’t popped up in any updates. The set photos are out, and production is moving full speed ahead, but Argyle’s signature long hair and chill vibe are noticeably missing.

Season 5 is shaping up to be the biggest chapter yet. With Vecna still a looming threat and Hawkins more unstable than ever, fans are expecting emotional goodbyes, epic battles, and plenty of surprises. But for those who loved the easygoing Surfer Boy Pizza guy from Season 4, something is clearly missing from the final adventure.

Netflix co-ceo: There won’t be a dry eye watching the final season of Stranger Things
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (which is also the last season of the show) finally went into production at the start of 2024 with a twelve month shooting schedule, wrapping at the end of December. Series creators the Duffer Brothers are working hard to get the season ready for release by the end of the year – and Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos told Variety he doesn’t think there will be a “dry eye” watching this final season.

Stranger Things has the following synopsis: A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana. After a boy vanishes into thin air, his close-knit group of friends and family search for answers and are pulled into a high-stakes and deadly series of events.

Sadie Sink shares that she may have embarrassing photos after getting so emotional wrapping up Stranger Things
Image
Netflix’s juggernaut sci-fi nostalgia series Stranger Things is wrapping up after an amazing run. The child stars have now become young adult actors as they’ve started to break out into newer roles, including Millie Bobby Brown fighting robots alongside Chris Pratt in the upcoming The Electric State. Finn Wolfhard recently commented that wrapping up the series was “incredibly emotional, obviously. It’s the last 10 years of my life. […] My whole childhood was there. It was sort of the Toy Story 3 moment of leaving your toys behind. It was really special. We had a long last year. We shot sort of ‘Lord of the Rings’ style with a year-long shoot. It was a great way to go out and very intense. I feel like it couldn’t have ended better.“

According to The Hollywood Reporter, his castmate Sadie Sink is all about crying for the end of this era.

‘Yunan’ Review: An Existential Mood Piece on Displacement That Deftly Harnesses the Transformative Power of Nature
Image
In writer-director Ameer Fakher Eldin’s slow but haunting meditation on exile, Yunan, displaced persons can return to their roots only to find they never left. Nothing in the past has changed except their place in it: “You will be gone, forgotten. As if your existence was nothing but an illusion.” The film is driven by a performance of few words but much gravitas from Lebanese actor Georges Khabbaz as Munir, a novelist of unspecified Middle Eastern origin, living in Hamburg. The somber drama has a cumulative spell, intensified by its hypnotic visual command and an atmospheric principal setting on Germany’s Hallig Islands.

Munir is introduced in a doctor’s office, plagued by frequent shortness of breath that becomes almost overwhelming. The medic tells him his respiratory tests came back normal, suggesting that stress might be his problem and that a break would do him good.

Calls to his...

Berlinale Review: Yunan Lacks the Substance to Fully Sing
Image
The fact that only two German films were selected to compete at the 75th Berlinale raised some eyebrows and sparked interest in the pair of sophomore features that received the distinction over new works from higher-profile filmmakers like Tom Tykwer and Jan-Ole Gerster. One such designated Golden Bear contender is Yunan by Syrian-born, German-based director Ameer Fakher Eldin. Featuring iconic Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla, it’s a contemplative, somewhat ineloquent drama about the exile experience that aims high but misses the mark.

Munir (Georges Khabbaz) is an Arab writer living in Hamburg. Although doctors can’t find anything wrong with him, Munir is suffering from shortness of breath and what seems to be general world-weariness. When he gives away his dog, transfers money to his sister back home to take care of their senile mother, and travels to a remote island with nothing but a light bag, you know he...

‘Yunan’ Review: Far From Home, an Exiled Middle Eastern Writer Seeks Serenity in a Windblown Mood Piece
Image
You can see why Munir, a soul-sick writer from an unspecified country in the Middle East, chooses Germany’s remote Hallig Islands as the place to end it all. The soft, watery landscape serves as a suitably calm and scenic backdrop to one’s final days on earth, though it’s not so spectacular or stimulating as to give you a new lease on life altogether. Not at first, anyway. But in the course of Ameer Fakher Eldin’s poetic, existential drama “Yunan,” Munir does gradually find more to the place — and, in turn, to his own life — than initially meets the eye. As a mellow, slow-burning study of cross-cultural human connection, the film is quietly rewarding; a folkloric parallel strand, mapping the protagonist’s journey onto his native heritage, is less successful.

Premiering in competition at the Berlinale, “Yunan” is the second entry in Fakher Eldin’s “Homeland” project,...

‘Yunan’ Review: A Writer In Exile Finds Solace On A Storm-Tossed German Island in Ameer Fakher Eldin’s Atmospheric Drama – Berlin Film Festival
Image
Opening a film with a line of poetry is always a problematic way to start: the words are quickly forgotten once the visuals begin, making the verses far more meaningful were they before the final credits. In the case of Yunan, the words come from the Abbasid poet Al-Mutanabbi and they speak of craving a person’s presence, yet even when together, “the distance will still linger between us.”

It’s an apt line for the film, both in terms of the inability of the main character to bridge both metaphorical and physical distances, and in the way Ameer Fakher Eldin’s atmospheric sophomore feature keeps the audience at a certain remove, refusing clear-cut explanations or simple emotional catharses. Suffused with a melancholy as saturated as the damp air of the North Sea, Yunan follows on from Fakher Eldin’s ultimately more affecting debut The Stranger with its exploration of...

Italy’s Fandango Sales has taken world distribution on “Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don’t,” the new sophisticated comedy by Gianni Di Gregorio whose hit “Mid-August Lunch” recently got an English-language remake.

Fandango is launching sales on the film, which is now in post, at the EFM in Berlin.

“Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don’t,” which is a working title, is the eclectic director’s sixth feature. The film turns on a retired professor in his 70s who is leading a serene life in a nice house, with a decent pension, friends to joke around with, and a lady with whom he spends some time. But then his life gets “turned upside down by the arrival of his daughter, in a marital crisis, and her two unwieldy grandchildren,” says the provided synopsis. This arrival prompts “New worries, new anxieties, but also new affections,” it adds.

80 Years After Auschwitz Liberation, ‘The Investigation’ Bears Witness to Nazi Atrocities
Image
On Oct. 19, 1965, shortly after the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial — the first trial of Germans by Germans for the crimes of the Holocaust — playwright Peter Weiss premiered The Investigation. The play drew on the verbatim testimony of SS officers, Nazi functionaries and camp survivors, to reconstruct the genocidal horror in harrowing, undeniable detail.

Eschewing depictions of the camp itself, The Investigation relies on the words of the perpetrators and their victims to lay bare the greatest crime of the 20th century.

On Jan. 27, 2025, 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army, the first film adaptation of The Investigation will premiere in Israel. R.P. Kahl’s faithful, four-hour-long re-creation will screen at the Cinematheque Tel Aviv on Monday and at the Cinematheque Jerusalem on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The Investigation

“Showing the film in Israel, particularly in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, is deeply meaningful to us,” says The Investigation producer Alexander van Dülmen.

George R.R. Martin: “That does not mean I won’t go back to it” on Solving Game of Thrones’ Biggest Mystery That Sadly Now Seems Impossible
Image
The showrunners of Game of Thrones had to use a lot of creative imagination to fill in the latter seasons as the source material is not yet completed. This is why the series ended in a not-so-stellar fashion, with many arcs leaving fans unimpressed, particularly Arya Stark’s journey in Braavos.

Maisie Williams in Game of Thrones / Credits: HBO

Across Seasons 5 and 6, the young girl began her journey learning to become an assassin in hopes of avenging her family. She traversed the Narrow Sea to reach the home of the Faceless Men. While this promised an exciting storyline, it somehow ended on a disappointing note.

George R.R. Martin plans to fix Arya Stark’s Braavos storyline

After arriving in the House of Black and White, Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark learned the secrets of the Faceless Men and why she needed to give up her identity in order to become someone else.

Stranger Things is looking to recast Hopper’s late daughter Sara

The character of Jim Hopper on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things has a tragic history, having lost a young daughter named Sara to cancer – an illness he blames on the fact that he served in the Chemical Corps during the Vietnam War and worked with Agent Orange. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is currently in production, and Sara will be making another appearance in this last batch of episodes – but that Stranger Things season 1 finale was eight years ago, so Graham, who is now 15 years old, has aged out of the role. While she didnt reveal if she knew about the switch, she was candid about whether shed ever return to the show, noting:

Oh, I would do 10 seasons of that show. I'm so sad about it, honestly. I'm just heartbroken. It was the best job ever. And you know, [costar] Jake McDorman and I still text each other ideas for scenes, like, ideas for additional takes that we filmed now two years ago.

Hawke said (with thanks to Deadline for the transcription), “Our showrunners, Matt and Ross (Duffer), take a lot of responsibility. They have an amazing team of writers, but they’re very involved. They write a lot and they are very intense and serious about the quality of the continued writing, and it takes a long time to write each season, and it takes a long time to shoot them.

Hilma Review: Lasse Hallstrm's Portrait of Mystical Artist
Image
Quick Links The Duality of Hilma, Abstract Artist Balancing Spiritual Context with Artistic Adventure A Cleverly Queer Study of Hilma Stumbles Due to Rudolf Steiner Hilma Ends Strong and Her Art Lives On

Hilma is a lush biopic about one of the first abstract painters in Western art history, a Swedish woman by the name of Hilma af Klint, who set off to challenge the entire artistic world in the late 1800s. Even though she easily mastered the more traditional avenues of illustration like portraiture and landscape paintings, Klint quickly found herself on a more spiritual plane, deciding to draw line-based symmetrical images that represented a depth beyond form.

This was all undoubtedly inspired by her familys vested interest in the studies of numbers and plants, her circle of friends (called The Five who introduced her to the pseudo-religion of Theosophy), the underlying concept of the High Masters and eventually her idol,...

After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (which is also the last season of the show) finally went into production at the start of the year and is now six months into its twelve month shooting schedule… and according to cast member Jamie Campbell Bower, who joined the show in season 4 as the supernatural villain Henry Creel / Vecna, the episodes that make up the final season of Stranger Things are out of control and completely insane.

During an interview on iHeart’s I’ve Never Said This Before with Tommy Didario, Bower said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “If you thought last season was nuts, this season is just out of control, wild, like it’s bonkers. It really, really is. It’s bigger. It’s just completely insane. It’s completely insane.

Image
After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things finally went into production at the start of the year and is now three months into its twelve month shooting schedule… but in the midst of filming, Finn Wolfhard is also doing the press rounds to promote the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which is set to reach theatres on March 22nd. An interview with The Hollywood Reporter was part of his press tour, and during that conversation, Wolfhard was asked about the ongoing production of Stranger Things season 5, which will also be the final season of the show. Since this is how it wraps up, it seems fitting that Wolfhard said it will be a return of the dynamics of the first season.

When asked how his Stranger Things character Mike Wheeler is doing, Wolfhard said,...

Image
After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things finally went into production at the start of the year – but if you were hoping that might mean the new episodes will be available to watch on Netflix by the end of 2024, or even at the beginning of 2025, new cast member Linda Hamilton is here to dash those hopes. While speaking to Business Insider, Hamilton said Stranger Things season 5 will be filming for an entire year!

Hamilton said, “It’s a year of shooting, so I couldn’t be happier. Their season takes a year to shoot, which is just an unheard-of luxury of time. But the size of their day is also so beyond any scale that we’re used to.“

Image
One of the new characters introduced in season 4 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things was Argyle, a pothead delivery boy for Surfer Boy Pizza who helps some of the returning characters get from California back to their hometown of Hawkins, Indiana. During an interview on the Steve Varley YouTube channel, Franco said it doesn’t look like he’ll be back for the new season.

Varley told Franco that fans got concerned when they saw he was absent from the cast picture Netflix released to celebrate the start of production on Stranger Things season 5, saying, “(Fans are) they’re thinking you’re not in the season. Can you give us hopes that you are?...

Stranger Things season 5 described as “season 1 on steroids”
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
The fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things was just about to start filming when the writers strike hit back in May. But now that the writers strike – and the actors strike that followed it – has come to an end, series creators The Duffer Brothers are preparing to head into production on Stranger Things season 5 at the start of January. But as they get ready to start filming, they took a moment to talk to The Guardian… and while the conversation was primarily about the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, they also mentioned that the new season of the show will be like “season 1 on steroids” and the biggest the show has ever been.

Matt Duffer told The Guardian, “This season – it’s like season one on steroids. It’s the biggest it’s ever been in terms of scale, but it has been really fun,...

Stranger Things season 5 will begin filming in January
Image
The fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things was just about to start filming when the writers strike hit back in May. But now that the writers strike – and the actors strike that followed it – has come to an end, production is gearing up, and Deadline hears that Stranger Things season 5 is finally going to go into production in January. Specifically, they hear that cameras will begin rolling on either January 5th or January 8th.

They note, “Cast members are believed to already be in Atlanta, where Stranger Things films, for prep work, with table reads also slated for the next couple of weeks.” They add that most of the writing had been completed before the writers strike hit, but “faced with the prospect of filming without writers on set, creators, executive producers and showrunners the Duffer Brothers opted to instead postpone production, which was then...

Stranger Things season 5: David Harbour says the final season has a very real ending
Image
Last week, Stranger Things cast member David Harbour said he expected to start filming season 5 of the hit Netflix series – which will also be the final season of the show – in “a couple days”. But first he had to make an appearance at Motor City Comic Con, and during the show he confirmed that season 5 has “a very real ending” that wraps up the story.

Harbour said (with thanks to Deadline for sharing his comment), “The beauty of it is, there’s a real ending. Stranger Things will end in a very real way. … The storyline of Stranger Things, from where we started with the Upside Down and that lab, to where we’re going in season 5 is one complete story, and it’s gonna end at the final episode of season 5.” He acknowledged that there’s still room for spin-offs and prequel stories like the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow,...

Stranger Things season 5 heads into production in a couple days
Image
The fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things was supposed to go into production right around the time the writers strike hit earlier this year – so it had to be put on hold, and then there was another reason for it to stay on hold when the actors strike hit. When the writers strike ended in September, finishing the Stranger Things season 5 scripts was one of Netflix’s top priorities. And now that the actors strike has come to an end, Stranger Things season 5 is finally about to head into production. In fact, cast member David Harbour says it’s going to start filming in just a couple days!

Variety caught to Harbour at a BoxLunch Gala honoring Feeding America. When asked what comes first on his post-strike agenda, he said, “I mean, we got to film that last season of Stranger Things, don’t we?...

Stranger Things season 5 writers reveal the first lines from the season premiere script
Image
Season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things is also going to be the final season of the show. It was supposed to be deep into production by now, but it has been slowed down due to the Hollywood strikes – first the writers strike, then the ongoing actors strike. It remains to be seen when filming is going to begin, but yesterday, November 6, 2023, was the 40th anniversary of the day Will Byers went missing in the town of Hawkins, Indiana in the first season of Stranger Things. So the show’s writers marked the occasion by sharing the first lines from the first episode of season 5 on social media:

Stranger Things season 5: Dan Trachtenberg discusses joining the series and directing an episode
Image
A few months ago, it was announced that 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey director Dan Trachtenberg will be directing an episode of Stranger Things season 5 – which also happens to be the final season of the hugely popular Netflix streaming series. That season was supposed to be deep into production by now, but has been delayed several months due to the writers and actors strikes. The writers strike recently ended, now we just need the actors strike to come to an end so Stranger Things can get rolling. While waiting for his chance to report to the Stranger Things set, Trachtenberg has been doing the press rounds to promote the physical media release of his Predator movie Prey… and during a conversation with Collider, he talked about signing on to bring an episode of Stranger Things to the screen and working with the show’s creators The Duffer Brothers.

Trachtenberg told Collider,...

Stranger Things season 5: Will Byers is taking center stage
Image
Season 5 of the Netflix series Stranger Things – which also happens to be the final season of the show – was supposed to be a couple months into filming at this point. But production was delayed by the writers strike, then the writers were joined on the picket lines by members of the Screen Actors Guild. So it’s going to be a little while before this season finally gets up and running. While we wait for the strikes to be resolved, Stranger Things creators Duffer Brothers have gone ahead and revealed that the character of Will Byers, played by Noah Schnapp, will be taking center stage in this last season.

The first season of Stranger Things began with Will Byers disappearing into the twisted dimension known as the Upside Down. He eventually got out of there, but he has had plenty of troubles to deal with in the following seasons. Will...

Image
A couple weeks ago, it was announced that Terminator star Linda Hamilton has signed on to play a role in season 5 of the Netflix series Stranger Things – which also happens to be the final season of the show. Now Netflix has revealed that 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey director Dan Trachtenberg will be directing an episode of Stranger Things season 5. They didn’t say which episode he’ll be directing – the premiere, the finale, some episode that will fall in between – but we will be seeing a Trachtenberg-helmed episode somewhere along the line.

Stranger Things season 5 was supposed to be filming right now, but the start of production has been delayed due to the writers strike.

Stranger Things season 4 had the following synopsis: It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for...
