Nicolas Cage: ‘I don’t think a day goes by where I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave’
Nicolas Cage in The Surfer (2024)
As psycho-thriller The Surfer is released, the actor answers your questions about eating rats, loving pickled eggs and scaring Terry Wogan

What do you remember of that appearance on Wogan? What was Terry like in real life? Have you still got that leather jacket, and the snakeskin jacket from Wild at Heart? johnnysmooth, EddieChorepost and BigAl65

I remember Terry Wogan was a very nice man and I enjoyed the interview with him, although I thought I was both obnoxious and somewhat wild. I guess it’s no secret that I was promoting a movie called Wild at Heart, so I was sort of play acting to that. I remember, as a child, I was in a car, a guy was walking down the street, and he had a leather jacket on and no shirt on underneath. I thought: “Well, that’s an interesting look.” I don’t know why that...

Who Tim Burton Originally Wanted To Play Beetlejuice Instead Of Michael Keaton
Image
Beetlejuice creator Tim Burton has the sequel to his cult classic film coming out this September, but the iconic ghost could have been completely different if Burton had proceeded with his original casting plan. The 1988 comedy-horror sees a deceased couple hire the malicious spirit Beetlejuice (played by Michael Keaton) to drive a new family away from their home. The movie was so beloved among audiences that even after 36 years, moviegoers excitedly await the sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which has Winona Ryder and Keaton set to return alongside Hollywood breakout Jenna Ortega.

It may seem like Keaton was a natural choice for the role of the titular character: The actor has the ability to capture Beetlejuices eccentricity in a way that is cinematically spectacular when paired with Burtons eclectic imagery. There is no doubt in anyones mind that without Keaton, Beetlejuice would never have become the iconic piece of media that it is.

EE British Academy Film Awards (2022)
Post your questions for David Tennant
EE British Academy Film Awards (2022)
Get your questions in (quickly) for the host of this year’s Baftas, the star of stage and screen who’s played everyone from Dennis Nilsen to Scrooge McDuck

The high point of the British film industry’s year, the Bafta film awards, returns on Sunday 18 February. The longlist has already been announced, with Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie and Oppenheimer leading the count, and the contenders for the rising star award have also been revealed.

Hosting the event is a plum job, with Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry having had the longest stints, dominating most of the 00s and 10s. But everyone from Terry Wogan (minus his Blankety Blank microphone on a stick) to (raises an eyebrow) Roger Moore to (somehow) Noel Edmonds have put on their very best DJs and had their eyes tested to double check they can read the teleprompter.

Watch Kate Bush Perform ‘Running Up That Hill’ Over a Pulpit in 1985
Image
Kate Bush is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a long overdue honor for the experimental and forward-thinking singer-songwriter.

Because she’s rarely performed live over the course of her career (she has only toured once, in 1979), most of Bush’s fans have only been able to watch her on television programs. In 1985, while rolling out her classic album Hounds of Love, she made her first of four career appearances on Wogan, a BBC One chat show hosted by presenter Terry Wogan.

Bush commands the stage from behind a pulpit,...

‘I’ll be going to bed an hour later’: Ken Bruce ‘struggling’ to figure out new work schedule after BBC move
Image
Ken Bruce has expressed his concerns over a “struggle” related to his new Greatest Hits Radio stint.

The radio DJ uttered his final words on BBC Radio 2 last month, after 31 years with the station. He starts his new show with Bauer on Monday (3 April), where he will present the 10am to 1pm show.

Speaking to Pa ahead of the new role, Bruce admitted he’s still trying to get used to his change in routine due to the new working hours; he previously hosted the 9:30am to 12pm show for Radio 2.

“I’m struggling to work my day out,” he said, adding: “I think I’m going to be going to bed an hour later because I just have to squeeze everything into the remaining hours of the day.”

He continued: “Once I get my body clock, right. I think I’ll be all right, but I...

Ken Bruce’s departure signals the start of an era Radio 2 listeners never wanted
Image
It’s a sad day for Radio 2 listeners. Today, Ken Bruce is leaving the mid-morning slot he’s occupied for three decades. Never a showy broadcaster – like Terry Wogan before him, he identifies as a shy man – the 72-year-old Scot was an avuncular anchor in the day. To hear that he had decided to leave came as a shock. The mood curdled when it transpired Radio 2 bosses had refused to let him work out his contract, insisting he get his slippers out from under the desk by lunchtime today.

“It’s entirely within the BBC’s right to ask me to step away a little early,” he told Radio 4’s Today programme. “But for the sake of 17 days, which was all that was remaining [on my contract], it seems a shame.” He pointed out that he’d stuck to an old-school work ethic that meant that “over the last 46 years, I haven...

Rob Brydon
Rob Brydon jokes that he needs ‘privacy at this difficult time’ after Ken Bruce quits Radio 2
Rob Brydon
Rob Brydon’s tongue-in-cheek reaction to Ken Bruce quitting BBC Radio 2 after 31 years has been getting attention from fans on Twitter.

On Tuesday (17 January), the veteran radio host announced that he had decided to step away from the corporation, where he has been employed for 45 years.

Bruce has hosted the 9:30am to 12pm weekday show on BBC Radio 2 since 1990, and became one of the best-loved presenters, in part thanks to PopMaster, a game that tests listeners’ music knowledge.

He will join radio station Greatest Hits in April, and has confirmed he will bring PopMaster with him to his new job.

Comedian Brydon, who has stood in for Bruce many times on his radio show and once even impersonated him for an entire two-and-a-half hours on air, paid tribute to Bruce’s tenure with a humorous tweet.

“Devastated to hear @RealKenBruce has decided to leave @BBCRadio2,” he wrote. “I...

‘A beautiful man’: Rylan and Nick Grimshaw lead reactions to Ken Bruce’s BBC departure
Ken Bruce in BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park 2018 (2018)
Star broadcasters Rylan and Nick Grimshaw are among the first to react to the news that Ken Bruce is leaving his BBC Radio 2 show after 31 years.

Bruce said “the time is right” for him to move from the station, after presenting the mid-morning weekday show for more than three decades.

The 71-year-old, who is leaving in March, joined the corporation in 1977 as a BBC Radio Scotland presenter 45 years ago. His first regular slot on Radio 2 was The Saturday Late Show in 1984. The following year he fronted the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, taking over from Sir Terry Wogan.

Bruce said: “Nothing stays the same forever and I have decided the time is right for me to move on from Radio 2 when I reach the end of my current contract in March. It’s been a tremendously happy time for me: I’ve made many friends and worked with many wonderful colleagues.

‘It’s time for a change’: Ken Bruce announces departure from BBC radio after 45 years
Image
Ken Bruce has become the latest veteran presenter to leave BBC Radio 2, leaving the corporation after 45 years to host a show on commercial rival, Greatest Hits Radio.

The 71-year-old has been on the station since 1984, but told listeners: “I’ve done everything it is possible to do at Radio 2.”

He has hosted the 9:30am to 12pm weekday show since 1990, and been with the BBC since 1977 where he began as a presenter on Radio Scotland.

It comes after Steve Wright was nudged out his Radio 2 afternoon slot, with Simon Mayo, Graham Norton and Paul O’Grady also moving on in recent months.

“After 45 years of broadcasting on BBC Radio, it’s time for a change,” Bruce said on Tuesday.

“I would stress that this is entirely my decision. I will always be very proud of my association with the BBC and Radio 2.”

Bruce, who said “the time was right” to quit,...

How Nicolas Cage Wound Up Kissing His Younger Self in ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’
Image
When Nicolas Cage agreed to play a rambunctious, self-absorbed version of himself in the Lionsgate comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” the actor had plenty of opinions about his character should behave. However, none surprised director Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten more than when Cage suggested he make out with a younger version of himself.

“I wouldn’t even have thought to suggest it,” Gormican said in an interview, “but it’s exactly the sort of Nicolas Cage choice that led us to write this movie.”

Among the many meta elements that “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” offers as it explores Cage’s attempt to retake control of his life, the movie concocts a younger version of the actor — whom he dubs “Nicky” — that goads the older Cage into reclaiming his wilder days. And in a key moment as Cage bickers with this living inner monologue, the pair actually lock lips.

Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
Nicolas Cage to Recreate Con Air and Face/Off Roles for Bonkers New Film
Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
Kirsten Howard Feb 21, 2020

Nicolas Cage will play Nicolas Cage in a new film about Nicolas Cage, called The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent.

Nicolas Cage is about to play himself in a painfully meta - but mostly fictional - comedy movie about his illustrious craft, and this undertaking will apparently include a look back at his roles in John Woo’s 90s actioner Face/Off, among others.

The actor told Empire magazine that The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, which is set to begin filming imminently, will see him “taking the piss” out of himself after a long cinematic career filled with spectacular highs and baffling lows where sometimes, due to his electric on-screen presence, those can still be interchangeable.

The film’s writer and director, Tom Gormican, has just one feature directorial credit to date - 2014 rom-com That Awkward Moment with Zac Efron - but Cage seems to trust...

BBC Internal Documents Show How It Grades Its Stars Using A ‘Top Trumps’-Style Scoring System
Exclusive: Internal BBC documents have revealed how the British broadcaster conducts repeated research on its biggest stars and scores how well they are performing with audiences.

So-called BBC “talent reports” were released as part of the corporation’s legal battle with presenter Samira Ahmed, who has taken the BBC to an employment tribunal seeking £693,245 in lost earnings as part of an equal pay dispute.

Ahmed said “it just does not seem fair” that she was paid £440 for hosting an episode Newswatch, while at the same time, male presenter Jeremy Vine took home £3,000 for recording an installment of Points of View.

She argued that both shows, which invite viewer feedback on BBC output, involve similar work and provide audiences with a similar service. The BBC disputes this characterization, arguing that Newswatch is a news show on the “relatively niche” BBC News channel, while Points of View is a BBC One brand...

Bros: After the Screaming Stops review – reunion doc cranks the cringe up to 11
Toe-curling levels of self-importance add a wincingly funny edge to this documentary about the reunion of an 80s boyband

For various reasons, my screaming was pretty much continuous throughout this bizarre and perhaps unintentionally gripping promo-doc about the stressful reunion of 80s boyband Bros: Matt and Luke Goss, back together in 2017 for one night only at London’s O2 Arena for their 30th anniversary.

Now they are in their 50s, with a slight resemblance to Benedict Cumberbatch, who might want to play them in the feature-film version. (The title is taken from the sly question once put to them in their pomp by Terry Wogan: what would they do when the screaming stopped?) If you can imagine a Traveling Wilburys-type combo of Alan Partridge on drums, Nigel Tufnel on guitar and David Brent on vocals (and maybe Les McQueen as manager), you’ll have some idea of the tragicomic...

Bros: After The Screaming Stops Review
“H…O…M…E….those letters are incredibly important. They are… the personification of home.”

There’s something about former boyband legend Matt Goss. It could be his enduring, striking looks, replete with that wisp of blonde hair and those piercing eyes we were so accustomed to seeing, staring out from newsagent shelves from the covers of Smash Hits or Just 17.

Or perhaps it’s his thoughtfulness, as exhibited in Joe Pearlman and David Soutar’s documentary about the reformation of 1980s hit factory, Bros.

In truth, it’s all of the above the makes Matt Goss so watchable. Particularly his astonishing turn of phrase, delivering unique metaphors (the directors would later refer to them as Matt-isms) with alarming regularity.

The co-directors join Goss in the Us, where he evidently likes to stare pensively across the Vegas skyline (at least when he’s not performing on stage at The Mirage). Meanwhile,...

The 90s felt so good that some of us never left. We’re still there, wearing Converse All-Stars, drinking blackcurrant Hooch and listening to Natalie Imbruglia. Celebrating Irishness at the Movies
And look at that, not a leprechaun in sight.

For a relatively small island with a tiny film industry, Ireland certainly gets a lot of representation in movies — sometimes via other places masquerading as Ireland, other times by representing other places (the beach landing scene in Saving Private Ryan was shot in Wexford, for example) or worlds (Ahch-To in The Force Awakens), and occasionally it even gets to play itself. The island also exports a rather impressive number of cinematic talents considering the fact that, though every third or forth person you meet on the street in, say, Boston or Chicago (a lot of places, really) will claim Irish heritage, the Republic of Ireland has a population of slightly less than 4.6 million and Northern Ireland slightly more than 1.8 million, bringing the island to a total of only around 6.4 million. In other words, still around 2 million less than before the Famine, over...

The Trap Door: celebrating a much-loved 80s animated series
facebook

twitter

google+

We salute Terry Brain and Charlie Mills, creators of 1980s children’s stop-motion animated TV series, The Trap Door…

Somewhere in the dark and nasty regions where nobody goes stands an ancient castle. Deep within this dank and uninviting place lives Berk, overworked servant of The Thing Upstairs. But that’s nothing compared to the horrors that lurk beneath the trap door. For there is always something down there, in the dark, waiting to come out…

What was under the trap door? In 1986, a three inch stack of film reel cans forming a makeshift plinth for whatever Plasticine monster was due to spill out of it in that episode. Over the course of forty mini-episodes in the mid-eighties, a legion of skittering demons and tentacled beasts slithered off those reel cans and into the psychedelic polka-dotted castle dungeons where they caused havoc for servant Berk and his disembodied skull companion Boni.

Iconic Broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan Dies at 79
Terry Wogan in Wogan (1982)
Sir Terry Wogan was a broadcasting institution and cultural iconoclast. He hosted a multitude of television and radio programs, including the quiz show Blankety Blank, as well as the charity program Children in Need, which was first broadcast in 1980, and which he continued to host after his retirement from regular broadcasting. With that singular Irish Blarney and an irreverent whimsy, he helped make the Eurovision Son Contest, for which he provided acerbic commentary for the BBC from 1971 to 2008, relevant again, long after Brits ceased to take the program seriously. "Who knows what hellish future lies ahead?" he mused at the beginning of the 2007 contest. "Actually, I do. I've seen the rehearsals."Wogan, who died of cancer at 79 on Sunday, was an ubiquitous presence in England and Ireland. He had a brilliant ability to coax celebrities into saying things that adorned morning headlines, and would deliver lacerating...

Scott Mills to defy gravity as he aims to abseil Blackpool Tower for BBC Children in Need

None other than Sir Terry Wogan phoned in to challenge the DJ to abseil down Blackpool Tower for BBC Children in Need.

Mills will be joined by Royal Marines for the 400ft abseil.

"I would say I'm really excited to be part of Children in Need this year, but to be honest, I am ridiculously nervous about what I am taking on," Mills noted.

"If facing my fear and abseiling the Blackpool Tower inspires even just one person to donate then it will be absolutely worth it... especially when I get to the ground!"

Viewers will see if Mills can conquer his fear of heights during the Children in Need show on November 13.

Wogan will be hosting this year's broadcast alongside Fearne Cotton, Tess Daly, Rochelle Humes and Nick Grimshaw.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ''We, probably in common with every other middle class person of our age, probably drink too much, but there you are. ''Of course you shouldn't drink every day, I'm not advocating people drinking, but the fact is that, yes, I have a glass of wine with my dinner and I may have a dry martini before my dinner.
