10 Perfect Villain Performances In Modern Fantasy Movies
Image
The best fantasy movies of all time need their villains and are doubtlessly made even better by the perfect performances of the actors playing them. Antagonistic portrayals constitute some of the best fantasy movie performances ever, but the focus is usually on the heroic (or at least protagonist) characters. Villain actors deserve just as much appreciation for convincingly portraying the person who typically sets the story in motion. There are a range of complex fantasy villains for A-list actors to play, supporting different types of stories.

The most evil fantasy movie villains ever are usually just evil for the sake of it, leaving it up to the actors to make them amazingly charismatic when there is no explanation for their actions. Villains with a tragic backstory are potentially easier and more difficult in different ways; while they have more understandable motives, they demand nuance. Many legendary actors have dazzled audiences with their larger-than-life villain performances,...

Every Movie Based on a Disney Theme Park Attraction, Ranked
Image
Turning Disney theme park attractions is a relatively new-ish concept, but the movies based on Disney attractions vary wildly in quality.

The story goes that Dick Cook, who at the time was running the Disney film studio with Nina Jacobson, had originally come up with the idea to “mine the theme parks for movie ideas” (as James B. Stewart put it in “Disney War”). They had made “The Country Bears” and were working on projects based on classic Disney attractions Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. At the time, Pirates was envisioned as a direct-to-video cheapie, more along the lines of “Tower of Terror,” which debuted as an inexpensive TV on “The Wonderful World of Disney.”

But during a meeting about whether Disney should invest in “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” an expensive Peter Weir movie starring Russell Crowe (they declined), the idea was...

Drew Carey in The Price is Right (1972)
Jay Wolpert, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Writer and ‘Price is Right’ Producer, Dies at 79
Drew Carey in The Price is Right (1972)
Jay Wolpert, a TV game show producer who helped popularize “The Price is Right” and had a late career resurgence as a credited writer on Disney’s mega-blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” has died. He was 79.

Wolpert died Monday morning in Los Angeles after suffering from Alzheimer’s, his longtime manager of 20 years told TheWrap.

Wolpert created CBS’ “Double Dare” in the ’70s, spending much of his early career at Goodson-Todman Productions. He also worked with Chuck Barris and Dan Enright and helped develop classic game show hits such as “Family Feud,” “Card Sharks” and “Match Game.” But he most importantly helped introduce some of the humor and narrative elements to “The Price Is Right’s” Showcase Showdowns, working on the show as a producer between 1972-1978 and for over 1,300 episodes.

He also found success writing for the big screen, moving into screenwriting and...

Jay Wolpert Dies: ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Writer & Early ‘Price Is Right’ Producer Was 79
Image
Jay Wolpert, who was the original producer of The Price Is Right in the 1970s, created other game shows and later scripted The Count of Monte Cristo and Disney’s first Pirates of the Caribbean film, died Monday of Alzheimer’s in Los Angeles. He was 78.

Wolpert’s reps at Code Entertainment confirmed his death today. Watch a WGA West video interview with him below.

Wolpert won a Jeopardy! championship in the late 1960s, an experience that steered him toward a career in TV game shows. Working for Goodman-Todman Productions, he became the first producer of the Bob Barker-hosted Price Is Right, which premiered in 1972. He remained in that role until 1978.

In 1976, Wolpert created Double Dare, another Goodman-Todson game show originally hosted by future Jeopardy! answer man Alex Trebek. It aired for about five months. Wolpert went on to launch Jay Wolpert Productions, for which he created the daytime game shows Whew!

Pirates Of The Caribbean Writer Says He Wanted Hugh Jackman As Jack Sparrow
Johnny Depp looks to have fallen on even harder times after the outcome of his latest court case opposite ex-wife Amber Heard, and there’s been widespread speculation that none of the major studios are too keen to work with the actor due to the swathes of negative publicity that have been following him everywhere he goes over the last couple of years.

The 57 year-old’s fans are staunchly backing him even if Hollywood won’t, and his supporters aren’t happy that Disney are moving forward on two Pirates of the Caribbean movies without the franchise’s star. After all, it was the role of Jack Sparrow that transformed the actor from the eccentric darling of independent cinema to a genuine A-lister, with the character becoming a cultural icon from the very second he showed up onscreen.

Not only did the series make Depp one of the highest-paid talents...

Why Pirates of the Caribbean Didn’t Need Any Sequels
Image
Pirates of the Caribbean was never meant to be a franchise. Not really. Of course one could also argue the concept was never meant to be a movie either. Originally a theme park ride which opened at Disneyland in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean becoming a movie is the kind of high-concept thrown around by Disney execs huddled at a conference table. Indeed, it was creative executives Brigham Taylor, Michael Haynes, and Josh Harmon who brainstormed the basic plot for a Pirates movie during the same period the studio greenlit The Country Bears and The Haunted Mansion movies. However, what made the eventual Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl a classic came from the type of creative inspiration Disney couldn’t anticipate or control… yet.

Released in 2003 with modest expectations from the Mouse, and even more cynical predictions by the rest of the industry, the first Pirates of the Caribbean...

The behind the scenes battles of Pirates Of The Caribbean
Mark Harrison May 25, 2017

The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies have not been easy films to make....

As Michael Bolton once belted out: “This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow.” The Pirates Of The Caribbean film was a surprise sleeper hit in 2003, astounding the higher-ups at Disney who had long been sceptical of how a pirate movie, based on a ride at Disneyland, would appeal to audiences.

Off the back of this success, the sequels only got more ambitious and expensive in scale, with their use of practical effects and convoluted character dynamics serving to complicate the adventure format, with mixed results. It shouldn't shock you then, to hear that each of the movies released so far had some serious behind-the-scenes battles to make them shipshape.

The fifth and apparently final instalment, Salazar's Revenge (or Dead Men Tell No Tales), has had some very public battles before it has even been released,...

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: First 'Pirates of the Caribbean' One of Most Enjoyable Summer Blockbusters of Early 21st Century
'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

Extended Thoughts on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Directed by Gore Verbinski

Written by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie, and Jay Wolpert

Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush

Captain Jack Sparrow is the worst thing that ever happened to Johnny Depp’s career. The prevailing wisdom is that the constantly soused pirate is what vaulted Depp to superstardom, and though it’s accurate, I don’t think this financial leap represented a positive for his qualitative growth as an actor. Some people have found a balance between being legitimate actors and movie stars. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon come to mind. (Sadly, not every one of the 21st-century Ocean’s Eleven qualify as stars. Sorry, Eddie Jemison.) This trio are easily among the most recognizable faces in film, this generation’s respective answers to Cary Grant, Robert Redford, and Henry Fonda. Their...

Gary Ross
Gary Ross to Direct Peter and the Starcatchers
Gary Ross
Director Gary Ross may have found his follow-up to the spring blockbuster The Hunger Games with Disney's Peter and the Starcatchers.

The story is set up as a prequel to the J.M. Barrie classic Peter Pan. The plot follows Peter, who meets a young girl named Molly on a Neverland ship. Molly tells Peter about a trunk of magical "starstuff" that must never be retrieved by "Black Stache," the name Captain Hook went by before losing his hand. Peter and Molly set off on an adventure to keep this mystical substance out of the nefarious pirate's hands.

The project was first set up at Disney way back in 2005, when Jay Wolpert was hired to adapt the best-selling book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. After years of languishing in development, we reported in May that Jesse Wigutow was hired to write the adapted screenplay.

The book was adapted into a Broadway play,...

The Count of Monte Cristo - Blu-ray Review
James Caviezel gives a strong performance in 2002's The Count of Monte Cristo which arrives on Blu-ray looking solid and with revenge on its mind. The adaptation of Alexandre Dumas novel of revenge was directed by Kevin Reynolds (who brought Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld to the screen) with Jay Wolpert (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) handling writing duties. The film sees Caviezel joined by Guy Pearce, James Frain, Dagmara Dominczyk, Luis Guzmán, Henry Cavill, Jb Blanc, and Christopher Adamson. It also benefits from short performances from the legendary Richard Harris and an evil performance from Michael Wincott. The tenth film adaptation of the classic tale sees Caviezel taking on the...

Director: Rob Marshall Writers: Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie, Jay Wolpert, Tim Powers Starring: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Kevin McNally You say you want a synopsis? I will give you a synopsis...a very synopsized one at that! Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) swashbuckles his way into a London prison to rescue his first mate Gibbs (Kevin McNally) from a public hanging. Next thing Jack knows, he is in King George's (Richard Griffiths) palace. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), now a "privateer" sailing for the British monarch, is also there. King George wants the pair to be the first to beat the Spaniards to Ponce de Leon's legendary Fountain of Youth. Instead, Jack finds himself a minion on Blackbeard's (Ian McShane) Queen Anne's Revenge, which just so happens to have an old flame of Jack's -- Angelica (Penélope Cruz) -- as its first mate. The Spaniards, Brits...

Wolpert tapped for WWI tale
TORONTO -- Canadian producer Pacific Empire Prods. on Monday said that screenwriter Jay Wolpert has signed on to adapt the First World War novel "A Century of November" for the big screen.

Vancouver-based Pacific Empire said Wolpert ("Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl") has agreed to pen a script based on W.D. Dis recruits Wolpert to pen 'Peter'
Game show producer-turned-scribe Jay Wolpert has been hired to adapt Peter and the Starcatchers, the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, which Walt Disney Feature Animation is turning into a tentpole computer-animation feature. The book explores the origins of Peter Pan in a tale set before the J.M. Barrie classic. Starcatchers centers on a young orphaned boy, Peter, who becomes a stow-away on a merchant ship in order to avoid a life of servitude. He gets more than he bargained for when he finds a hidden trunk full of the celestial substance "starstuff," and when the shipment is hijacked, it is up to Peter to save the day. The novel was published last year by Hyperion and spent 47 weeks on the best-seller list.
