Muppets assemble! In the crossover event you didn’t see coming, the Muppets are flying into the realm of Marvel Comics, with variant covers of several issues from Marvel’s past as part of the 70th anniversary of Jim Henson’s beloved creations.

As for which Marvel comic book covers will get Muppet twists and when they hit shelves: Amazing Spider-Man #13 and Venom #250 on October 1st; Amazon Spider-Man: Torn #1, Avengers #31 and Spider-Man & Wolverine #6 on October 8th; Amazing Spider-Man #14, Captain America #4 and Incredible Hulk #30 on October 15th; and Fantastic Four #4 and Battleworld #2 on October 22nd. Marvel Comics is celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Muppets with special new comic book variant covers.

The anniversary celebration includes incredible, never-before-seen artwork that pays homage to iconic Marvel moments. The publisher unveiled six of the special Muppets 70th Anniversary variant covers and announced that ten covers will be released in total. The artwork will see Kermit and the rest of the gang starring in select Marvel comic books released throughout October, with some of the publisher's top artists creating crossover artwork that pays homage to some of the most iconic covers in Marvel history.

Marvel's Star Wars comics are finally exploring the darkest point in Ben Solo/Kylo Ren's life, in the time between The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker; though he has risen to be the Supreme Leader of the evil First Order, this era also finds him at his personal lowest, a dynamic that, according to the author of the new Legacy of Vader miniseries, will be pivotal to the story.

In an interview with IGN to promote Star Wars: Legacy of Vader – written by Charles Soule, with art by Luke Ross – Soule discussed how the series extracts drama from Kylo Ren's journey to discover what it truly means to be the heir of Darth Vader, noting that this story finds its protagonist at the most turbulent time in his life, to say the least.

After reading the first issue of one of my most-anticipated titles of 2024, I'm not surprised to be saying that James Tynion IV and Elsa Charretier's new series The City Beneath Her Feet is definitely worth the wait. With a twisted take on classic romantic comedy tropes and stylish cartooning, Dstlry's next comic asks: what if Nora Ephron made a movie about a mysterious assassin?

I jest, but Tynion and Charretier's The City Beneath Her Feet is billed as "a bloody love letter to New York City," so rest assured: I'm not joking all that much. The first issue - with frequent Tynion collaborators Jordie Bellaire on colors and Aditya Bidikar on letters - follows the two leads, the mysterious assassin Jasper Jayne and the struggling writer Zara, as they make their separate ways across New York City, only for the paths to serendipitously collide after Jasper gets injured on one of her jobs.

Powerhouse writer/artist Jamie McKelvie returns to the world of creator-owned comics with his first solo story in over a decade: One For Sorrow, which arrives November 6th, 2024 from Dstlry. The hot-new-thing publisher has been on a roll with ber-original genre comics, and One For Sorrow is no exception.

The year is 1900, and the place is London - both the West End and the East End, as the first issue makes a point of noting. One For Sorrow follows a large cast of characters throughout the city as they navigate supernatural cons, organized crime, and a nagging mystery one Sherlock Holmes-like character just can't let go. Iconic pop culture character Barbarella is set to return in a new series from Dynamite Entertainment, which will offer a dose of metahumor, as the creative team seeks to elevate the character for a new generation of fans, all while sending the space hero on a classic "heroes' journey," as the preview for the debut issue makes clear.

As reported by Aipt Comics, the character returns in Barbarella #1 written by Blake Northcott, with art by Anna Morozova and will quickly be propelled on an all-new adventure. The book promises a fresh take on the character, who was originally developed as a pulp hero in the early 1960s, and quickly became a cult favorite on-screen several years later.

The preview for the issue emphasizes how this new iteration of Barbarella will provide commentary on the sci-fi and action genre as a whole, as well as both paying homage to and lampooning the origins of the character.

Marvel is officially introducing a seedy version of the Watcher, as Howard the Duck explores the road not taken with a little cosmic help. The forthcoming Howard the Duck #1 will see Marvel's hard-luck duck encounter an all-seeing being who will kick off his very own What If...? story.

Marvel revealed details about Howard the Duck #1 at San-Diego Comic Con. The one-shot will have a large creative team, including Chuck Zdarsky, Daniel Kibblesmith, and Merritt K on writing duties, and Joe Quinones, Annie Wu & more on art. A private investigator, Howard is dealing with personal issues when a mysterious creature calling itself the Peeper comes to him. Described by Marvel as "all-seeing," the Peeper offers Howard a chance to see his life as it might have been had he not come to Earth - Marvel's take on It's a Wonderful Life. Warning: Potential Spoilers for Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #2After years of writing fan-favorite Marvel and creator-owned comics, creator Kelly Thompson is making her DC debut. Thompson and artist Annie Wu are teaming up on a new Harley Quinn story that may just help Harley escape her own origins.

DC Comics and Thompson announced that she would be making her debut with the publisher upon the release of DC's August 2023 solicitations. The official text for Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #2 confirms that this will be Thompson's first foray not only into Harley Quinn territory, but also DC. Whenever a new year approaches, I normally have a clear idea of which superhero movie will be my most anticipated. In the case of 2020, I’d like to say it’s Birds of Prey, yet I’m internally conflicted.

You see, even though I’ve been dying to see Black Canary and Huntress on the silver screen, the costuming department apparently decided to ignore using comic books for reference. Not only do those ladies’ outfits look nothing like their counterparts’ on the printed page, but neither does Harley Quinn’s. They’re basically unrecognizable. And there’s also the matter of significant reshoots to consider – but I’ll remain cautiously optimistic.

Regardless, we must brace ourselves because the marketing machine is starting to turn its gears. In an effort to entice casual fans to take a closer look at the books, DC Comics will be releasing three Birds of Prey...

I previously penned an article here on Nerdly about the Archieverse and the various titles, old and new, to come from this wonderful world of comics. I mentioned in said article that I would be reviewing many of those books, and so what better place to begin than from the newest iteration of Archie and the first volume of that series.

Archie Vol. 1 was released all the way back in 2015 and collects issues 1-6 on the rebooted Archie franchise. Written by the excellent Mark Waid with artists Fiona Staples (for issues 1 to 3), Annie Wu (issue 4) and Veronica Fish (issues 5 and 6), this was the start of something special, and so it was a total joy to go back and read it again in order to talk about it here in this first review in a series.

This week saw the release of Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy, a hardcover celebration of the female characters of the massively successful space opera franchise. Written by Amy Ratcliffe, the book offers profiles of 75 characters from all corners of the galaxy — movies, books, comics and TV shows — with each entry accompanied by artwork from 18 female and nonbinary artists, including Elsa Charretier, Little Corvus, Annie Wu and Jen Bartel.

Lucasfilm Publishing has announced a brand new Star Wars book series called Flight of the Falcon. What makes this book series so special is the fact that the Millennium Falcon will be used to connect all of the eras that have been explored in the Star Wars universe. Netflix has released the episode titles for Season 2 of Jessica Jones using comic book covers illustrated by 13 international women.

The significance of the 13 women artists is all 13 episodes of the Marvel Netflix series will have female directors. Artists who contributed to the covers are Stephanie Hans, Jen Bartel, Elizabeth Torque, Kate Niemczyk, Colleen Doran, Erica Henderson, Audrey Mok, Joyce Chin, Jenny Frison, Amy Reeder, Ema Lupacchino, June Brigman and Annie Wu.

Last week H&M received intense backlash after releasing a controversial ad featuring a black child wearing a sweatshirt with the slogan “coolest monkey in the jungle.” The brand was slammed on social media by a slew of celebrities for being racially insensitive, and two of its collaborators, The Weeknd and G-Eazy, ended their working relationship with the retailer. H&M took the criticism seriously, it says, and has taken steps to address its internal diversity problem.

Last month, I read a book called Hawkeye, Vol. 1 . This month, I hit one called Vol. 3. In the annoyingly typical way of Big Two comics, the latter follows directly from the former. (One is a hardcover, which in comics-reprinting circles comes typically a year or two after the paperback and combines two paperbacks together. Yes, that’s the opposite of how we old-time book-industry hands are used to seeing things happen, but it seems to work for the Wednesday Crowd.)

Anyway, at the end of Vol. 1, the two Hawkeyes split up, because comics are all about break-ups and changes and new things that can last for six issues or so. (Spider-Man No More! once again.) L.A. Woman follows the younger female Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, who drives a cool car cross country to the city of the title, where she immediately gets caught up in nefarious doings and skulduggery of her own.

When Black Canary by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu launched in June of 2015, music was baked into the fabric of the comic. Dinah Lance finds herself fronting a band. The team mixed Black Canary’s martial prowess and black leather aesthetics with punk rock sounds. But one of the drawbacks of a visual medium is the lack of audio. Fletcher could write amazing lyrics and Wu could creatively make them pop on the page, but it was up to readers to imagine the riffs and melodies. Until now. DC Comics has brought the sounds of Black Canary to life with three singles to form the Ep Kicking and Screaming. I spoke to Brenden Fletcher over the phone about how this project came to life, and who is behind the music of this amazing new sound. Hitfix Harpy: Congrats on your Black Canary Ep! If you were a follower of the DC You Black Canary title from  Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu, perhaps you wondered what the fictional band sounded like in real life? Well, wonder no more as DC Comics has put out a real-life Ep for Black Canary featuring "Dd" on vocals, Paloma Terrific, Lord Byron and Ditto. In reality, DC solicited Caveboy frontwoman Michelle Bensimon and producer Joseph Donovan to create the 3-track Ep under the Black Canary banner.  You can get further info on the band on their own corner of the DC Comics website and purchase their music on their own bandcamp site.
