Image Source: 20th Century Studios On this day in 1986, a guy named Jack Burton, driving the Pork-Chop Express, says “Everybody relax… I’m here.” And just like that, boom! Big Trouble in Little China blasts onto the scene. Almost forty years later, and seriously, this movie is still pure, glorious, bonkers perfection. John Carpenter directed this bad boy, right? And he put Kurt Russell in the driver’s seat as Jack Burton, who’s just this hilariously clueless “hero.” The film totally blew up genres – we’re talking kung fu, creepy supernatural stuff, laugh-out-loud comedy, and insane action. It’s bold, it’s bizarre, and honestly, you just can’t forget it. This whole wild ride actually started as a Western way back in 1899, until writer W.D. Richter brought it into modern times. Plus, the cast? Awesome! You had Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, James Hong, and Victor Wong all in there.

I come from the video generation. People today have their pick of whatever they want to see online – legally or not – so one can’t say there’s a lack of available stuff. In fact, I’d wager no movie, no matter how obscure, is totally impossible to find nowadays. But let me take you back to a time before the internet, when things weren’t so easy to find. In the eighties and nineties, we had video stores, where you could rent video tapes for a day, and were limited by the inventory, which is why everyone had at least two or three video stores in their circuit to hit. Each place had different things. Without the internet, renting older movies was a real crapshoot, especially if they were obscure, but sometimes you’d find gold.
Such was the case when, at thirteen years old, I walked into my local video store,...

Kevin Bacon has cropped up just about everywhere over the past five decades, from raucous teen comedies to Hollywood blockbusters ("Apollo 13") and challenging indie projects. Indeed, his roles have been so varied across so many genres that a whole game emerged called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon (you can try to beat it at The Oracle of Bacon). Yet there was a period in the 1980s when it wasn't going so well for the hard-working actor, to the extent that he thought one of his best-loved movies might totally tank his career.
That movie was Ron Underwood's "Tremors," a light-hearted yet suspenseful throwback to the classic creature features of the 1950s. Set in the tiny Nevada desert town of Perfection (Population: 14), Bacon starred as Val McKee, one half of a hapless handyman duo with his best friend, Earl Bassett (Fred Ward). A new episode of our What Happened to This Horror Movie? series is now available to watch on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel – and you can also check it out in the embed above! In this one, we’re taking a look back at the 1987 John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness (watch it Here), the middle installment in what the director calls his “Apocalypse Trilogy”, even though the three films – the other two being The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness – aren’t directly connected to each other. If you haven’t seen Prince of Darkness yet, watch the video to find out all about it.

In the early 1980s, writer S.S. Wilson was climbing over large boulders in the Mojave Desert when the thought occurred to him, “What if something was under the ground and I couldn’t get off this rock?” That thought would eventually grow into the story for one of the greatest creature features ever made, Tremors (watch it Here), which was directed by Ron Underwood from a screenplay Wilson wrote with Brent Maddock. That movie, released by Universal in 1990, introduced viewers to the subterranean monsters known as Graboids and spawned a franchise that has – so far – consisted of six direct-to-video sequels and a TV series that ran for thirteen episodes back in 2003. Wilson, Maddock, and their production company Stampede Entertainment were behind the first four movies and the TV show, and they had written a script for Tremors 5… but Universal kept the script on a shelf for several years, and when...

Thirty years ago, if anyone asked Kevin Bacon for a comment on the 1990 monster movie Tremors, they would have gotten a pretty grim reply. Strapped for cash and unsure of his future, the beloved actor was afraid the giant carnivorous worms had killed his career but today, he counts the horror hit as one of his favorite projects. Six sequels and a TV series later, Tremors' graboids still have a grip on the hearts of fans everywhere, and soon fans can relive the magic of the original when it lands on Paramount Plus this month.
In the beginning, Tremors had a tough climb up from the bottom. The genre-bending creature feature confused critics with its combination of splattery scares and family-friendly entertainment, and it bombed at the box office. However, it proved to be a mega-hit on home video, and in subsequent years, the upstart film became a cult classic,...

"Where do they come from?" "I vote for outer space. No way these are local boys." Time for another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. This time we're featuring the original trailers for the 1990 horror comedy monster movie classic Tremors. It first opened in January 1990 and made a fair amount at the box office, but only became a real hit later on home video. I grew up watching this all the time with my family - always having a blast with it. Tremors eventually inspired a whole bunch of sequels - Tremors 2: Aftershocks in 1996 all the way through Tremors 5 in 2015 and a few direct-to-video sequels recently, too. This first movie is still the Og best. A group of people ina small isolated desert town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one. Starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire, with an...

Kurt Russell is a powerhouse of Hollywood with a great deal of credits to his name, not the least of which being a collection of commendable comedies. A versatile actor, Kurt Russell is best known for his work in action movies, particularly under the watchful eye of John Carpenter, making a name for himself in titles like The Thing and Escape From New York. It's easy to forget that outside of Russell and Carpenter's collaborations, he's also starred in quite a number of comedies, as well.
Compared to Kurt Russell's Westerns or cheesy 80s blockbusters, Russell is usually the best thing about the comedies he's in. In general, the actor's films historically haven't been massive hits at the box office, and his more humorous appearances keep to this unfortunate pattern. Whether or not the movie surrounding him holds up on his own, Russell always manages to bring a cheery performance...

Eddie Murphy has a lot of standalone movies that are great like Trading Places, Harlem Nights, and the more recent Dolomite is my Name, but he’s also been a bit of franchise gold in the past. Obviously, Beverly Hills Cop is the biggest and most recent example, but he’s also been part of 2 48 Hours movies, a couple Nutty Professor flicks, a couple Doctor Dolittle movies and is an integral part of the mega franchise that is Shrek. While we unfortunately have to call Coming to America a franchise now after that abysmal rehash that Amazon dropped on us, there is another movie and character that I actually wouldn’t mind being brought back and has potential, under the right writer and director combo, to be a fun time and maybe even fix some of the mistakes from its predecessor. While Pluto Nash and Norbit are all time stinkers...

Horror movies have provided moviegoers with some of their favorite films since Hollywood began. Dating all the way back to the classic days of Universal Studios' horror, these films follow various scary threats, from ghosts and zombies to masked killers and demons. Halloween is a great time to discover and enjoy some of Hollywood's most underrated horror stories, especially for fans who love a good scare.
Horror comes in all forms, from psychological fears to gore-fest slashers, but it's increasingly easy for great films to get overlooked by audiences. Some films suffer from a low budget, difficult competition or simple obscurity, with fans being left to find such movies on their own. Some of these can become a horror buff's favorite new movie, and they all make for great popcorn flicks for the scariest holiday.

Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!
Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. Prince Of Darkness
Prince Of Darkness, streaming on Talking Pictures TV Encore until June 19
Talking Pictures continues to be a great source of older cinema, but despite what you might think, not everything that it shows is in black and white. It's also worth checking out the channel's catch-up service, Encore, where this enjoyable John Carpenter horror flick - most vibrantly in colour - is currently available. Dark and ancient forces are at work as a group of grad students - plus a priest (Donald Pleasance) and a professor (Victor Wong) become embroiled with a sinister canister of devilment which, unnervingly, can only be opened from the inside. It may not be Carpenter's best work but there's plenty here to enjoy as religion mixes with something altogether more science-fiction based in an apocalyptic tale that also includes one of the most effective jumpscares in the business - even when you.

When Universal Pictures released the classic creature feature Tremors (watch it Here) back in 1990, they decided to market it with poster art that brings to mind the iconic poster for Universal’s 1975 release Jaws. John Carpenter is deservedly known as a master of horror, but he often did not get his just due quick enough. So many of his films did not find a loving audience until after their theatrical releases, including The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, In the Mouth of Madness, and 1987’s Prince of Darkness, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
The film is the second chapter of Carpenter’s “Apocalypse Trilogy”—which also includes The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. Although it lacked the star power and larger scope of the other two films, Prince of Darkness still comes off as incredibly rich and complex. Big Trouble in Little China was released in theaters 35 years ago, and fans of the John Carpenter classic are celebrating the occasion. Directed by Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, the movie is widely considered to be among Carpenter's best work. The Paramount Presents Series recently released The Golden Child on Blu-ray and it is a beautiful disc to behold even though the movie has a few flaws.
It’s 1986 and Eddie Murphy is riding high on the success of Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and Trading Places and it is time to create another blockbuster for this talented star. What do you do? Well, let’s keep the same formula and feature Murphy as a hip, wisecracking hero who this time finds lost children. Then, throw in a bit of martial arts in the style of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and add some Asian mysticism that reminds viewers of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Make sure your lead character displays an anti-authority attitude and even include a humorous scene where he pretends to be a...

If you can't find anything to watch on Netflix or Hulu, you might as well put on Big Trouble in Little China for free on YouTube. Released in 1986, the cult classic movie is directed by John Carpenter and stars Kurt Russell, one of several collaborations between the two. Some would also say that Big Trouble in Little China is among the very best work of both Carpenter and Russell and still holds up very well today. You can judge that for yourself by streaming the movie now for free.
Per the official synopsis, Big Trouble in Little China stars Russell as Jack Burton, a simple man who doesn't believe in ghosts or magic until he's swept into a mind-boggling adventure deep within Chinatown's mysterious underworld. Burton's pal, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), is trying to rescue his kidnapped fiancée. Egg Shen (Victor Wong), an enigmatic tour-bus driver seems to know a...

With a prodigious output during its peak, it isn’t hard for some Hong Kong features to fade into obscurity. It’s only with recent re-releases that we are getting the opportunity to revisit them. On researching “Fatal Vacation” for this review, I was surprised to read about the controversy that surrounded its production. With a relatively unusual subject matter for the industry, it veers into exploitation territory more in common a with “grindhouse” movie than regular Hong Kong fare.
Bob (Eric Tsang) runs tours of the Philippines for Hong Kong tourists, assisted by Candy (Irene Wan). In true Hong Kong fashion, he bribes the local airport staff and alters the itinerary to make quick money. At a nightspot, his party are captured by rebels and taken hostage to be used as negotiation for the release of one of their captured brethren. When the government refuses to...

This 1990 monster romp still feels bright, smart & fresh, a mix of light comedy and old-fashioned scares. The entire show is one long battle against smelly burrowing beasts called ‘Graboids.’ Desert handymen Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must work hard to avoid taking their place in the Graboid Food Chain. Ambitious it ain’t, but it delivers what monster fans want — gross-out thrills, excellent effects and solid laughs. Arrow’s 4K Ultra HD disc is as sharp as a tack, and a second Blu-ray disc contains an unprecedented volume of featurettes, interviews and production documentation.

John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China inspired The Rise of Skywalker character Babu Frik. The little character wasn't in the movie a whole lot, but he helped the Resistance out quite a bit, thanks to the relationship between Zorii Bliss and Poe Dameron. When it came down to designing characters for the latest trilogy, creature designer and sculptor Ivan Manzella took inspiration from all over the place, including John Carpenter and the Star Wars franchise.
When it came time to design Bab Frik, Ivan Manzella started to think back to John Carpenter's cult classic Big Trouble in Little China. Specifically, he was thinking of the late great actor Victor Wong, who played Egg Shen in the movie. Now, it's going to be really hard to watch The Rise of Skywalker and not think of Egg Shen. Manzella had this to say.

Literally pitched as Home Alone meets Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the 3 Ninjas series was a fun and action-packed thrill ride for many children of the mid to late 90s. The series follows the adventures of Rocky, Colt, and Tum-Tum, a set of siblings trained in martial arts by their Grandfather (Victor Wong).
Related: Home Alone: 10 Hidden Details You Never Noticed About The McCallister House
While Colt (Max Elliott Slade) had the same actor for the first three films, the second saw Rocky (Michael Treanor) and Tum-Tum (Chad Power) replaced. The final film of the series, which prominently features Hulk Hogan starred three all-new kids playing the roles. The acting throughout the series was plenty of fun, but this series shined in its fights. Here are the 10 best fights in the series.

Bernardo Bertolucci, the legendary Italian director behind classics such as “Last Tango in Paris” and “The Last Emperor,” has died at age 77. Bertolucci’s publicist, Flavia Shiavi, confirmed the director’s passing on the morning of Monday, November 26. The filmmaker, who had been suffering from cancer, died at his home in Rome, Italy.
Bertolucci was widely considered one of Italy’s greatest auteurs throughout his five decades making films in both Hollywood and Italy. The filmmaker got his start working with another giant of Italian cinema, Pier Paolo Pasolini. Bertolucci was an assistant on Pasolini’s first feature, “Accattone,” before he made his own directorial debut at age 21 with “The Grim Reaper” in 1962. The drama centered around the murder of a Roman prostitute and premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Bertolucci gained recognition in Hollywood following the release of “The Conformist,” which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Leon Corcos, though far from a household name, is a frequent Producer and collaborater with Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Stretch) and most recently Exec Produced Garry Marshall's star studded, swan song Mother's Day. Leon produced Carnahan's debut feature Blood, Guts, Bullets, & Octane, BMW Films Ticker- starring Clive Owen and Don Cheadle, and Stretch starring Patrick Wilson, Ed Helms, and Chris Pine... But, Corcos got his start in the solidly Indie genre of comedic horror a la his first feature, The Devil Takes A Holiday. After cutting his teeth on commercials and political spots in Sacramento, Leon took the plunge on his first feature in 1996 ( which garnered a feature piece in Film Threat magazine) and starred John Carpenter staple Victor Wong, character actors...

Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. Most of his other great films—and he has more great films than almost any other director working in the genre—took years to connect with the public. Don’t blame Carpenter for that. He’s a man ahead of his time.

While we continue to ponder whether or not the Big Trouble in Little China remake starring Dwayne Johnson is a good thing, we now have something new and exciting to pour over from the original movie itself. As we approach the 30th Anniversary of Big Trouble in Little China, which was released July 2, 1986, we have a first look at the big coffee table book that explores the making of the movie. Along with the cover art, we also have two behind-the-scenes photos.
Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we get a sneak peek at this awesome tome from authors Tara Bennett and Paul Terry. At the time of Big Trouble's debut in theaters, the Fourth of July release date window wasn't what it has become today. And the movie didn't fare too well amongst other big summer blockbusters. Its box office reception was tepid, to say the least, pulling in just $11 million.

John Carpenter celebrated his 68th birthday a few days ago, so it felt like a no-brainer that I should cover one of his films this week. We here at Fsr are big Carpenter fans and have already covered several of his films on Commentary Commentary — Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live — but while those titles are beloved I’m turning this week to one of his less-respected titles that I happen to love. 1987’s Prince of Darkness is a fun mix of gory horror and metaphysical mumbo-jumbo, and while some sketchy acting hurts it the film as a whole is terrifically creepy entertainment. The score is fantastic, the film ends strong, and the cast includes a bevy of Carpenter favorites including Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, and Dennis Dun. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Prince of Darkness commentary. Prince of Darkness...

I confess that my first reaction to this news was caught on film and you can now see it in photo form attached to this story. Here's the thing: I am on record as saying that I consider Dwayne Johnson a bit of a natural resource. I don't think the movies he makes are always worthy of his charisma and his genuine talent, but i think he's more than proven himself capable. I am hopeful when he announces a project that it'll be something that is as good as he is. I am also on record as saying that it's exhausting to get worked up about every single remake or sequel or reboot or whatever at this point. The industry has so clearly embraced that as an omnipresent business plan that it is wasted energy. It takes a lot to shake that loose from me now, but maybe this one...

While 80s movie fans await the inevitable news that Big Trouble in Little China will be either remade or rebooted as a franchise with a younger, handsomer Jack Burton, it was announced today that director John Carpenter is returning to the 1986 cult classic starring Kurt Russell, only this time in comic book form. That's right, ol' Jack Burton will live again in a series of all-new adventures featuring some of the movie's best characters. Coolest part is, it picks up with Jack's hideous hitchhiker as seen at the thrilling climax of the original movie, creating what is essentially a true sequel that takes place at Wang's wedding. “You know what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like this?” This June, Boom! Studios will tell you just what ol’ Jack Burton says in his continuing adventures in Big Trouble In Little China, a new, ongoing series from comics favorites Eric Powell (The Goon) and Brian Churilla (The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun). The cult-classic film combined ‘80s supernatural action with ‘70s kung-fu flicks, and Boom! has the film’s original director, John Carpenter, working alongside Powell to bring that over-the-top spirit to the comic. For honorable mentions we've got to include Michael Langdon (spawn of Tate and Vivien) from "American Horror Story: Murder House," the original season. Of course Hellboy holds at least some claim to the throne as well.

But the most amusing has to be Alan Moore's depiction of Harry Potter (although never named outright, it's quite clear whom he's referring to) in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic as the true son of Satan (click here if you're unfamiliar with the reference).

Prep for the Assault on Precinct 13 Blu-ray Release by Counting Down the Top 10 John Carpenter Films

John Carpenter seems to be at odds with what he loves and what is expected of him. Early in his career, Carpenter made a science fiction film (Dark Star), a siege picture (Assault on Precinct 13), and then Halloween.
He speaks freely of his love of the science fiction genre, yet seemed to have been pushed into the horror realm because of Halloween, where he has made quite a name for himself. Prince of Darkness, is an interesting blend of elements of sci-fi and horror, with some lofty academic ideas to propel the characters through this macrocosmic drama.
Carpenter favorite Donald Pleasence, simply billed here as “Priest,” finds a key after the death of a colleague, which leads him to an ancient evil trapped in the basement of an old church. In this instance, “evil” has taken the form of a swirling green mass in a glass container. In an attempt to stop an impending,...
