Sally Field's Psychological Thriller With 8% Rt Score Becomes Netflix Hit 29 Years Later
Image
There are many movies that, despite their big cast and promising plots, are not the success everyone expected. One of these films is 1996's Eye for an Eye.

The film premiered almost 29 years ago, starring Sally Field as a woman who takes matters into her own hands and gets revenge after her daughter's murder. Although the plot sounds exciting and original for almost two decades ago, the film failed to impress. However, Eye for an Eye found streaming success on Netflix, settling for tenth place for a second week in a row on the global charts, with a total of 2.4 million views, the equivalent of 4 million hours viewed for the week between Jan. 13 and 20, spending two weeks in the Top 10 in 20 countries.

'Without Saying Too Much...': Mayfair Witches Star Addresses Possible Interview With the Vampire Crossover
Image
Anne Rice's Immortal Universe is showing no signs of slowing down, with new seasons of both Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire on the way. Tongayi Chirisa, who stars in the former as Talamasca agent Ciprien Grieve, recently teased that a crossover between the two series could be in the works.

Speaking with Screen Rant ahead of Mayfair Witches' Season 2 premiere on Jan. 5, Chirisa noted how it would not be unusual for his character to encounter other supernatural beings due to his work with the secret society, Talamasca. "I think for Cip, it's not uncommon to encounter the supernatural," he explained. "I think with what's happening in Season 2, Cip was a certain level of Talamasca agent until certain things start to happen that will finally give him access to some of the deeper secrets of the Talamasca."

Every Marvel TV show on Disney+, ranked from worst to best
Image
In 2021, Marvel gave us WandaVision, the first show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then it's been off to the races, with shows like Loki, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and more following. Personally, I feel the decision to expand the MCU to television was a genius idea. In fact, I’d argue that in some ways the shows have been better than the movies because they are able to go more in depth.

With that in mind, we thought we’d look back at all of Marvel Disney+ shows we’ve gotten so far and rank them from worst to best. Bear in mind that being “the worst” doesn’t mean the show was a disaster, because Marvel rarely puts out anything bad. It simply means that it did not match the level of hype and excitement as the other series.

Now, without further adieu, let’s get ranking.

Tonys dark horse ‘Illinoise’ could be the first show in 25 years to win Best Musical without nominations in Score or Book
Image
“Illinoise” is something of an anomaly for a Broadway show. It is competing in the Best Musical race at the 2024 Tony Awards, but the story is told entirely through modern dance as a trio of singers lead the audience through the music of Sufjan Stevens. It doesn’t fit any typical mold for Broadway. The production’s hopes of winning the coveted Best Musical prize at the Tonys hinge on “Illinoise” becoming yet another anomaly: it’s hoping to be the first tuner in 25 years to win Best Musical without nominations for Original Score and Book.

In addition to a nomination in the top category, “Illinoise” picked up bids for Choreography (Justin Peck), Orchestrations and Lighting Design of a Musical. Industry insiders who once believed the show’s unique storytelling would make it a slam dunk to take home the crown immediately changed their predictions because of the many places the dance piece fell short.

‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ Review: Christian Slater in a Roku Fantasy Series Sorely Lacking in Wonder
Image
Magic is all around in the world of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Most of it is hidden away from the eyes of humans, tucked into obscure corners or shielded from human eyes by glamours. Still, those with hearts and minds open enough to see what’s in front of them — like our 15-year-old hero Jared (Lyon Daniels) — might find in the sleepy town of Henson, Michigan, a veritable haven of otherworldly life. Unicorns frolic in a glen. Sprites flutter alongside fireflies at dusk. Just outside the doors of a nondescript grocery, a goblin market trades in mythical weapons and pumpkin spice lattes.

But if such extraordinary sights are everywhere, the sense of wonder that ought to accompany them proves to be in disappointingly short supply. Even as The Spiderwick Chronicles‘ head drifts into the clouds, powered by fantasies of faeries and ogres and witches and dragons, the Roku Channel adventure is...

The Spiderwick Chronicles TV Review
Image
Plot: The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. Helen makes the move with her 15-year-old fraternal twin boys, Jared and Simon, and her older daughter, Mallory. Shortly after moving to the Spiderwick Estate, Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real! The only one to believe him is his great-aunt Lucinda, who implores Jared to find the pages of her father’s field guide to magical creatures and protect them from the murderous Ogre, Mulgarath.

Review: Based on the popular young adult novel series of the same name, The Spiderwick Chronicles comes a decade-and-a-half after Paramount Pictures’ big-screen adaptation was a moderate success at the box office and with critics. Taking a cue from other YA films like A Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, and other similar early 21st-century franchises, The Spiderwick Chronicles books combines fantasy,...

M. Night Shyamalan's $247M Superhero Movie Finds New Success On Netflix Global Chart
Image
M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable trilogy culminates with a twisty and unconventional superhero saga. Starring Bruce Willis and James McAvoy, Shyamalan's superhero sequel becomes a Netflix hit, racking up 13.4 million hours viewed in the first week. Shyamalan has closed the door on another Unbreakable saga sequel, prioritizing original thrillers.

M. Night Shyamalan's $247 million superhero film becomes a streaming hit, landing on the Netflix global top ten movies chart. Fresh off the blockbuster success of The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan in 2000 released the dark, unconventional superhero movie Unbreakable, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson as super-powered adversaries. Though the film grossed a solid $248 million at the global box office, it would take Shyamalan until 2016 to revisit the world of Unbreakable, when he released the secret sequel Split, starring James McAvoy as a man with multiple personalities, one of which is superhuman.

How to Watch M. Night Shyamalan's Powers Universe in Order
Image
Also known as the Eastrail 177 Trilogy, M. Night Shyamalan's Powers Universe consists of three feature films to date. Beginning with the psychological superhero thriller Unbreakable in 2000, the cinematic universe revolves around David Dunn, a seemingly ordinary man who develops impervious superpowers after miraculously surviving a fatal train wreck. Confused by his newfound makeover, everything changes for Dunn when he meets the mysterious Elijah Prince, a stranger with intimate knowledge of Dunn's superpowers that he manipulates for his benefit.

Although Shyamalan's new horror film Trap does not exist within the Powers Universe, it's worth analyzing how to watch the Eastrail 177 Trilogy in chronological order and where to stream each movie online. Although Shyamalan categorically dismissed plans to make another sequel in 2019, suggesting he's not interested in creating a cinematic universe (according to IndieWire), the filmmaker known for shocking twist endings could always change his mind and surprise fans with another cinematic entry.

Originally in development as a Disney+ series, The Spiderwick Chronicles has since switched over to The Roku Channel where it will be streamed for free. Phase 5's X-Men Revelation Was Set Up By The McU's First Villains - Marvel Theory Explained
Image
The presence of mutants in the MCU was set up by the villains of Phase 1, indicating Marvel's long-term plan. The "Superhuman Gene" mentioned in Secret Invasion is synonymous with the "X-Gene" of the comics, explaining the origin of mutants. Characters like Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel may possess the Superhuman Gene, explaining their abilities without being referred to as mutants.

MCU Phase 5 has cemented the presence of mutants with the likes of The Marvels even going so far as to feature one of Fox's X-Men characters, but one Marvel theory suggests that the X-Men revelation was set up by the villains of MCU Phase 1. With Marvel now in full control of the word "mutant," there is no reason for the MCU to skirt around ascribing the term to characters like Ms. Marvel. In the earliest days of the MCU, however, this was not so easy as Fox owned the rights...

The Marvels’ Major Missing Character Proves Secret Invasion Truly Meant Nothing
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Marvels.

The Marvels ignores key elements of Secret Invasion, suggesting that the series is practically meaningless in the MCU. The poor reception to Secret Invasion perhaps made Marvel Studios want to distance future MCU projects from the series, but completely ignoring it may not be the best choice. The Marvels sets up a potential continuation of Secret Invasion's storyline through the inclusion of Valkyrie, hinting at the Skrull refugees finding a new home in New Asgard and potentially leading to further conflicts.

By omitting one major character, and ignoring several set up storylines, The Marvels has proven that Marvel Studios recent Secret Invasion series is practically meaningless in the MCU. Secret Invasion hit Disney+ in June 2023, marking Samuel L. Jackson's first solo project as the McU's Nick Fury, the former Director of Shield and new Director of Saber (Strategic Aerospace Biophysics...

The MCU Just Cut Nick Fury's Most Important New Story 4 Months After Setting It Up

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Marvels.

Despite the major storyline established in Secret Invasion, Nick Fury's wife Varra is not mentioned or included in The Marvels. The Marvels focuses on the new team of Captain Marvel, Photon, and Ms. Marvel, with Nick Fury's role being to advance their narrative. The omission of Varra in The Marvels raises questions about the McU's continuity, and potentially retcons the ending of Secret Invasion.

Samuel L. Jackson returned to the MCU in The Marvels, but the Phase 5 sequel seemed to forget one of his most important storylines that Marvel Studios set up only months prior. Nick Fury has been a staple of the MCU since his debut in Iron Man, having now appeared in more projects than any other MCU character, and playing a central role in the formation and success of the Avengers. Despite having been in the MCU since the start,...

The Marvels Producer Discusses Nick Fury's Role in the Story
Image
Fans will see Nick Fury's softer side in The Marvels -- according to the movie's producer.

In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com, The Marvels producer Mary Livanos reveals that when Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) reunites with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) for the first time since 2019's Captain Marvel, audiences will see the former S.H.I.E.L.D. leader be a little less serious than his previous MCU outings. "What's great about Nick Fury when paired with Captain Marvel is that it brings out a lightness to him that we really only got to experience in that first Captain Marvel movie," Livanos said. "It's really their relationship that brings out a lot of fun in each other. He's great. He's wonderful."

The Marvels Director Admits That MCU Continuity Is Getting Hard To Manage
Image
For all the headlines about the Marvel Cinematic Universe of late, surprisingly few have been focused on the franchise's latest film release, "The Marvels". The movie itself acts as a sequel to far more than Brie Larson's initial solo outing as Carol Danvers in 2019's "Captain Marvel," bringing in the grown-up Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from "WandaVision" and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) from "Ms. Marvel" for a body-switching adventure that also picks up a key story thread involving Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and his newly-revealed Skrull wife Varra (Charlayne Woodard) from "Secret Invasion."

If your head's spinning just after reading that paragraph, you can start to imagine how "The Marvels" director Nia DaCosta felt while she was working on the film. Concerns have been growing of late that the MCU is starting to collapse under the weight of its shared continuity, so much so that even the House...

The Marvels Will Continue Nick Fury's Story From Secret Invasion (Sorry)
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Secret Invasion."

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's "It's All Connected" approach has always been a double-edged sword. When every MCU film and series builds on those that came before them, you can't just sweep a misstep like "Thor: The Dark World" under the rug. In the past, however, the franchise has managed to turn its lemons into lemonade, much like it did when it made "The Dark World" a key aspect of Thor's arc in "Avengers: Endgame."

Now, the House of Ideas is facing what might be its greatest challenge yet thanks to "Secret Invasion." What could've been a triumphant series adaptation of the acclaimed 2008 comic book story by writer Brian Michael Bendis and illustrator Leinil Francis Yu has instead become the McU's biggest faux pas. Adding insult to the injury that is the show's bad reviews, "Secret Invasion" had some of the lowest viewership...

Why Marvel Fans Will See a 'New' Nick Fury in The Marvels
Image
After the events of Secret Invasion and the many revelations involving its central character, Nick Fury, the Disney+ show's director believes fans will see a different version of the ex-s.H.I.E.L.D. director in The Marvels.

Speaking with Marvel about Secret Invasion, Ali Selim insisted the Captain Marvel sequel will showcase Fury in a different light considering how his character evolved during the miniseries. "I thought that was very important for him to come to that point where he understands where he is in the world now and what he needs to be to continue to be the new Nick Fury and to send him off a little sense of: 'I've reconciled that. Now I can do stronger and greater things," he said.

Why Priscilla Is the Most Important Character in Secret Invasion
Image
Secret Invasion introduces many new characters while bringing back a few familiar faces, but the one person who makes the most impact is Fury's wife, Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard). This Marvel espionage series serves as her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, but like other Skrulls, she's been working in the shadows for decades, helping Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in more ways than one to become the hero he is today.

This Nick Fury story has many implications for the MCU, and Priscilla has a huge role to play. She easily takes the spotlight, captivating audiences every time she appears on-screen. At first, there is a lot of mystery surrounding her character, like her intentions and loyalty, but it's clear by the last episode that she is the most important character in Secret Invasion.

In a whole season filled with shocking reveals, unexpected turns, and big twists, there were also many hidden Easter eggs in all the episodes. All the secrets uncovered in this show will make you a Marvel conspiracy theorist. So here are all the biggest Easter eggs in Secret Invasion.

Fury's Wife Was Foreshadowed Earlier in the MCU

The biggest shock of the whole series, and arguably in the whole phase, was the reveal that Nick Fury not only had a wife for decades but that Priscilla Fury (Charlayne Woodard) is actually a Skrull with the birth name of Varra.

Secret Invasion Director Unpacks the Finale’s Most Important Scene
Image
Ali Selim, the director of Marvel's Secret Invasion, explains the significance of the finale's most crucial scene.

Selim, who worked as an executive producer and directed all six episodes, told Variety the series made him think deeply about the idea of "other." He explored how we face the idea of "other" in our lives and communities, and the challenges of unusual love and acceptance. Selim said, "Ultimately, the scene that I pushed for and really enjoyed is when Nick Fury kisses Varra at the end. That is releasing the sense of 'other' in himself that has been a constraint or a prejudice. It’s opening up the world to conversation, if not all out love and embracing. It’s the very last scene of the series, and it really feels like that’s what it’s about."

‘Secret Invasion’ Director Ali Selim Dissects the Season Finale and Reacts to the Mixed Reviews
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Marvel’s “Secret Invasion,” now streaming on Disney+.

Marvel’s “Secret Invasion,” a six-episode event series on Disney+, ended Wednesday with a 37-minute finale that wrapped up the MCU’s first standalone story focused on Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

Ali Selim, an executive producer, directed all six episodes of the show, which adapted a popular Marvel Comics run that plays on the audience’s paranoia. “Secret Invasion” asks what it if the characters you thought you knew and loved were instead alien invaders — a.k.a. Skrulls, an alien race introduced in 2019’s “Captain Marvel” — posing as them? Then, as the show’s tagline wonders, “Who do you trust?”

Ahead of “Secret Invasion’s” premiere episode, Selim told Variety that if he, like the Skrulls, could shape-shift into any Marvel character, he’d like to become Nick Fury. As the architect behind the Avengers initiative,...

How the Secret Invasion Finale Set up the X-Men
Image
Like it or not, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will definitely remember the Samuel. L Jackson-led Secret Invasion. Whether it be as the show that sent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) off in underwhelming style, or as the six-part series that created the MCU’s most Op character in Super Skrull G’iah (Emilia Clarke), there’s a lot to discuss now the final credits have rolled.

As with all these Disney+ series, Secret Invasion set the stage for upcoming outings, including The Marvels and Captain America: New World Order. However, you might’ve missed a major tease of a whole franchise hiding in plain sight. If the surprise reveal that Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) could be a mutant has taught us anything, it’s to hunt in the most unlikely places for the X-Men. In the Secret Invasion finale, it looks like a case of X marks the spot.

Secret Invasion Creates The Most Powerful Character In The MCU (And We May Never See Them Again)
Image
This article discusses major spoilers from the "Secret Invasion" finale.

Remember those innocent days when we all thought that "Secret Invasion" would actually be Marvel's most grounded and nuanced story since "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"? Well, we may have spoken much too soon. The sixth and final installment of the series, titled "Home," brought things to a very familiar, Marvel-typical end (you can read my recap for /Film here) despite the previous five episodes taking great pains to tell a slow-burn plot that cribbed from countless espionage thrillers that came before.

Well, all that went out the window once Gravik (Kinglsey Ben-Adir) began to throw down in his Super Skrull form against G'iah (Emilia Clarke), who was gifted the same powers taken from the vial of Avengers DNA that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recovered at the end of last week's episode. Suddenly, this down-and-dirty series brought us back...

Secret Invasion Finally Delivers the Nick Fury Story It Promised
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 5, "Harvest," now streaming on Disney+.

From its first trailer, Secret Invasion promised a Marvel Studios spy thriller. For better or worse, that's what audiences got. However, with the penultimate episode, the storytellers finally deliver on their promise. Nick Fury is on the run with nowhere to turn. It just took him far too long to get there. Samuel L. Jackson has been excellent each time he's been on screen. However, the digressions and delays getting to this point suggest Armor Wars being turned into a movie isn't such a bad idea.

The big advantage the Disney+ series have over recent MCU Films is they have twice as much time to tell a story. They can take digressions into character or mythology without cramping the narrative. A disadvantage the shows have over the films, however, is how frequently they choose a "cards down" approach to storytelling.

Secret Invasion Proved the Importance of Nick Fury’s Biggest Risks
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 5, "Harvest," now streaming on Disney+.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially after the Infinity Saga, has been filled with battles large and small. But with each battle, there's always an inherent risk that many would overlook as winning one battle outshines necessary moves to prevent a larger threat. Thankfully, Nick Fury has always focused on the next battle and done what he could to get ahead of it. Even still, his process and choices, when uncovered, proved his risks came with a great cost. Secret Invasion captured this perfectly with the Harvest, possibly Fury's greatest risk of all.

Secret Invasion follows Nick Fury years after The Blip, venturing to Earth to stop a rogue army of Skrulls from infiltrating major governments and taking over Earth in the process. For most of the series, it's unclear why Nick Fury came back to Earth until...
