The Front Room Review: Kathryn Hunter's Delightfully Unhinged Genius Is Overshadowed By Horror's Weakest Elements
Image
A24 has become largely known for their work in the indie horror sphere, with everything from the psychological chiller Hereditary to the more directly supernatural Talk to Me. The studio has also made a reputation for frequently collaborating with certain filmmakers, including Robert Eggers on his first two projects, The Witch and The Lighthouse. Now, the studio has sought to expand that to Eggers' filmmaking siblings, Max and Sam Eggers, with the absurdist psychological horror The Front Room, which unfortunately doesn't make the same impact.

The Front Room is a psychological horror film directed by the Eggers Brothers. Set in a single location, it revolves around a young, pregnant woman caring for her ailing grandmother, whose secrets and dementia create a tense and eerie atmosphere. The film stars Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter, and explores themes of family, memory, and the supernatural.

The Front Room Directors on Sharing Bro Robert Eggers' Love of the Weird
Image
We spoke with filmmakers Max and Sam Eggers about their new film The Front Room, a gripping A24 thriller that dives into themes of religion, race, family dynamics, and more. If the name "Eggers" sounds familiar, it's true that Max and Sam are indeed brothers to groundbreaking director Robert Eggers, who they say inspired their vision for The Front Room. "His attention to detail, and I think the amount of research that he does for individual shots, I think learning from him and seeing that, working on this stuff, I think we tried to sort of honor that method but also do our own thing in that way," said Sam Eggers, who also worked on The Witch (2015).

Speaking of Robert Eggers, his 2019 masterpiece The Lighthouse was co-written by Max Eggers. Both that film and The Front Room garner the same sort of purposefully uncomfortable laughs from the audience as they watch unbearable tension build.

Megalopolis Star Kathryn Hunter on Coppola's 'Incredibly Bold' New Film
Image
We spoke with celebrated actress Kathryn Hunter leading up to the release of her new A24 thriller The Front Room, where she plays a sort of wicked mother-in-law of new mom Belinda, played to perfection by Brandy Norwood. Born Aikaterini Hadjipateras, Hunter seems to steal the show in virtually every high-profile project shes appeared in of late The Tragedy of Macbeth, Andor, and the list goes on.

Beyond The Front Room, Hunter is co-starring in Francis Ford Coppolas highly anticipated new film Megalopolis. Sure, it has already faced a few controversies leading up to its release, but the cast alongside Hunter is stacked, and Megalopolis is a passion project the Oscar-winning filmmaker has apparently been constructing for decades. "I think what Francis has done is incredibly bold," Hunter told MovieWeb, "So don't go in expecting... 'vintage Coppola' because I think the amazing thing about Francis... is that he wants to explore.

The Front Room Review | Hard to Watch A24 Nightmare About Awful In-Laws
Image
In-laws, am I right? Just when you thought you had it tough, you take in the outrageous predicament laid out in The Front Room, and you're left wondering if maybe the hand you're dealt ain't all that bad. A24's new psychological thriller ultimately throws a lot at the wall, and some of it sticks well: the racially charged story tropes, the chills reminiscent of classic feminine horror like Rosemary's Baby, and, as promised in the promotional campaign, Brandy's glorious return to horror.

Yes, it's been 25 years since the famed singer and actress' character survived the cunning sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, and as Brandy recently told us, she may even be back for its own legacy sequel. In the meantime, from writer-directors Max and Sam Eggers, working off a chilling short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room offers enough edgy...

A24's The Front Room Ends Studio's Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
A24's upcoming horror film The Front Room looks to end the critically acclaimed studio record. Directed by Max and Sam Eggers, the brothers of acclaimed filmmaker Sam Eggers, The Front Room stars Brandy as Belinda, a pregnant woman who discovers that her stepmother-in-law Solange (Kathryn Hunter) is working her way to manipulate her stepson and take the baby from the young family for her own sinister means. A24 has earned a reputation for redefining the horror genre in the 21st century with films like Talk to Me, Heriditerary, and even Robert Egger's The Witch, so there was a certain level of expectation for The Front Room to deliver another critically acclaimed horror film.

That does not seem to be the case as Max and Sam Eggers's debut feature film will not match their older brother Robert Eggers. The initial Rotten Tomatoes score for The Front Room was revealed at 46%, with thirteen reviews.

Brandy Norwood Has the Worst In-Laws Ever in The Front Room Trailer
Image
A big year for A24 is about to get even bigger as the studio has debuted a trailer for another highly anticipated project. The official A24 YouTube page has unveiled the second trailer for The Front Room, the upcoming horror thriller starring Brandy Norwood and Andrew Burnap. The trailer shows Norwood's Belinda facing off against her devilish mother-in-law in what very well may be A24's most terrifying film of the year. In addition to Norwood and Burnap, The Front Room also stars Kathryn Hunter as Solange and Neal Huff as Pastor Lewis, with others such as David Manis, Mary Catherine Wright, and Ellen J. Maddow filling out the rest of the call sheet in extra and supporting roles.
