A Matt LeBlanc Sci-Fi Flop Failed To Revive A Classic Television Series
Image
Though we live in the age of "newstalgia," whereby old shows and movies are re-presented to younger audiences as if they were new, the truth is that Hollywood has been in the newstalgia game since its inception. Sure, streaming has taken the industry's over-reliance on leveraging existing IP to stratospheric heights, but studios have always turned to established franchises and hits in order to navigate their way through the uncertain waters of the box office.

"Lost in Space" is a great example. What began as a 1965-68 CBS TV series has been revisited multiple times since it first aired, with plans for reunion TV movies almost coming to fruition. But it wasn't until the late '90s that anyone would actually produce new "Lost in Space" content that made it out to the masses. Lamentably, this was not one of Hollywood's most successful revisits.

Image
A “Swiss Family Robinson” series is in development at Disney Plus.

The series hails from Ronald D. Moore and Jon M. Chu. It is based on the novel of the same name by Johann David Wyss, which was first published in 1812. The novel has been adapted into numerous forms over the years, including the popular 1960 Disney live-action film.

“Swiss Family Robinson” tells the story of a family that gets shipwrecked on a deserted island, where they establish a new life for themselves.

Moore is known for developing the “Battlestar Galactica” reboot as well as the shows “Outlander” and “For All Mankind.” He has worked extensively in the “Star Trek” universe as well, both on the television and film side.

Chu is a well-established director who is perhaps best known for helming the blockbuster film “Crazy Rich Asians.” His other directing credits include “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Now You See Me 2.

Here's What's New on Netflix for September 2014
It's almost September, which means a whole new slew of titles on Netflix! August proved pretty lucrative on the quality title front, but it looks as though September it's going to blow the rundown out of the water.

TV takes spotlight this month, with the latest full seasons of "The Walking Dead," "New Girl," "The League," "The Blacklist," "Arrow," "Bones," and "Parks and Recreation" primed and ready for streaming before their fall premieres. And fans still mourning the loss of "How I Met Your Mother" (in more ways than one) can rewatch the ninth and final season to their heart's content. Ah, memories. Showtime's recently departed "Californication" can be seen in its entirety (Seasons 1 -7) as well, starting September 1. That's a lot of TV.

Movie fans have plenty to look forward to from Netflix in September, too. Sam Raimi's undersung 1998 thriller "A Simple Plan" hits the streaming service September...

Dis building 'Robinson' remake
The Walt Disney Co. is mounting a remake of the classic family film Swiss Family Robinson, hiring scribe Greg Poirier to pen a new feature script. According to sources, the project is a new telling of the classic story set in its original time period, around the beginning of the 19th century. The story, which first originated as a novel by Johann David Wyss, was the basis for the 1960 Disney film, starring John Mills and Dorothy McGuire. And it also has surfaced in more than a dozen other Robinson films and TV shows as well as serving as the inspiration for a Disney theme park attraction.
