Hot spring episodes are a staple in the anime genre. Audiences tend to have mixed feelings about these storylines. Some appreciate them for their humor and fanservice, while others are disgusted by the exploitation of characters in these types of episodes and scenes. To both sides' credit, there are both hilarious and uncomfortable Hot Springs scenes. Yet, when they’re bad, they are truly terrible.

The most problematic hot spring scenes showcase unsolicited peeping or — in more severe cases — sexual assault. Some of these scenes are played off as unintentional for comedy, but the creators are keenly aware of what they’re making their characters do in any given scene.
