This article discusses sensitive themes such as sexual assault and underage characters in uncomfortable situations.
Hot spring episodes are a staple in the anime genre. Audiences tend to have mixed feelings about these storylines. Some appreciate them for their humor and fanservice, while others are disgusted by the exploitation of characters in these types of episodes and scenes. To both sides' credit, there are both hilarious and uncomfortable Hot Springs scenes. Yet, when they’re bad, they are truly terrible.
The most problematic hot spring scenes showcase unsolicited peeping or — in more severe cases — sexual assault. Some of these scenes are played off as unintentional for comedy, but the creators are keenly aware of what they’re making their characters do in any given scene. Anime hot spring scenes have the opportunity to showcase a grand tradition, but too many of them are too uncomfortable to be enjoyed.

Science fiction manga isn't as common as fantasy-based manga, and this can be seen in popular shonen works alone. Most of these verge closer to the fantasy genre, though sci-fi lends itself a bit better to darker stories. This is especially the case with some of the best examples of the genre.
Some of the darkest sci-fi manga are harsh, takes on the mecha genre, while others do the same for space travel and space operas. Many of them are grounded with all too human protagonists, all while using science fiction concepts to showcase the depravity of mankind. Body horror is also quite present in these works, proving that losing autonomy is the darkest idea of all.
Planetes Is Dark In Its Mundane Nature Created by: Makoto Yukimura
The space-based series Planetes takes place in a future where satellites and debris are a constant threat to planet Earth, requiring different means of disposal.

From the briny waters within One Piece to the vast reaches of space from Cowboy Bebop, the wide world of anime offers plenty of lands, societies and cultures, yet transportation remains a crucial need for many. The lush worldbuilding in many anime titles often require creative solutions when it comes to vehicles, with many anime series forced to think outside the box when it comes to transportation.
The relative mundanity of answering the question of travel presents a unique opportunity for anime series to flex their worldbuilding muscles in answering that need, with some proving more ingenious than others. From All Might’s Hercules vehicle in My Hero Academia to Goku’s Flying Nimbus in Dragon Ball, these vehicles stand apart in terms of creativity and utility, remaining iconic to this very day.

Yakuza Fianc is the romance anime of the season, and it presents quite the questionable (yet addicting to watch) duo. Yoshino Somei and Kirishima Miyama are the grandchildren of two very high-ranking members of the Yakuza who've become engaged. Yoshino is a tough girl who stands her ground and possesses a head of beautiful red hair, and Kirishima is a masochistic young man with numerous red flags to match.
In spite of Kirishimas more concerning qualities, many fans have grown to love their uniquely compelling dynamic, as Kirishima's devotion to Yoshino is nothing short of endearing. And though their incredibly interesting and mildly problematic relationship is one that is hard to replicate, there are a great many anime couples with similar enemies to lovers dynamics.

Featuring a much more "blue collar" look at the genre, the hard science-fiction anime originally aired from 2003 to 2004. Katsuki Bakugo is one of the most explosive characters in My Hero Academia. But he wouldnt have the same bluster if it wasnt for his voice actors. Where the English dub is concerned, Clifford Chapin skillfully brings Bakugos signature bravado to life.
Chapin has worn many hats in anime creation, including Adr Script Writer and Director. But he is most known for his voice acting. Bakugo is his main claim to fame, but many other characters Chapin voices might surprise some fans. Chapin can be hard to spot for fans looking for Bakugos signature snarl, but he has voiced many characters with varying personalities across multiple anime genres.

Anime characters break the fourth wall for comedic effect, interacting with the audience and commenting on their world. Gintama stands out for its numerous fourth wall breaks, adding humor by criticizing production and referencing anime tropes. Fourth wall breaks are also seen in other anime like Fruits Basket, Pokemon, and Haruhi Suzumiya, adding humor and breaking reality.
While the genre is often known for its absurd premises and over-the-top deliveries, many anime go above and beyond that by breaking the fourth wall in the best ways. A concept with roots in theater, the fourth wall is what separates fictional characters from the real-life audience; the latter is aware of it while the former is generally not. Breaking the fourth wall is when the characters in a story become aware of their status as such, commenting on their world or the fact that theyre being watched.

Multifaceted in its subject matter, themes, and premises, the anime medium is incredibly diverse with the stories it tells, limited only by the creativity of its authors. And the genre that allows said creativity to blossom most vibrantly is speculative fiction, particularly narratives that explore the possibilities and innovations of the future. While no one knows what the future may hold, countless outstanding anime series try to peek at what awaits the human race through speculating about times to come.
Optimistic tales of space exploration and prosperity in the intergalactic age paint a bright picture of a hopeful future, while dystopian stories of fallen civilizations warn viewers about potential dangers that might lie ahead. Trigun and Space Dandy offer similar vibes to Cowboy Bebop with their space western themes and comedic elements. Bungo Stray Dogs and Michiko & Hatchin are anime series that capture the film-noir feel and individual character development seen in Cowboy Bebop. Black Lagoon and Gungrave have dark and complex storylines that fans of Cowboy Bebop will enjoy, with interesting characters and intense action.
Cowboy Bebop is often cited as a perfect starter anime for good reason, naturally leading many to seek out anime with the same vibe. With its jazzy music, deep characters, and witty plots, Bebop's magic is difficult to recapture. Given that even the series' big-budget Netflix remake couldn't even carry the torch by the estimation of many critics and fans, it's tempting to think there's nothing else out there like it. Though Bebop is indeed unique, that doesn't mean fans should give up hope of finding a similar series.
