Netflix’s Hit Sci-Fi Series '3 Body Problem' to Film Seasons 2 & 3 Back-To-Back
Image
One of the biggest shows on Netflix in recent years will return for not one, but two more seasons, with the science fiction series now getting an epic production update. After debuting on the streamer back in March last year, 3 Body Problem comes from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss who, alongside Alexander Woo, transformed the Chinese novel series "Remembrance of Earth's Past" by Liu Cixin into an ambitious story that stretches across time and space.

According to a new report from What’s on Netflix, 3 Body Problem Seasons 2 and 3 are all set to begin production “with both upcoming seasons likely set to be filmed back to back, akin to the recent example of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was similarly renewed for a second and third season together.”

Alongside this, the outlet has been privy to documents which reveal that both seasons will...

Nour El Nabawy, Lin Yin & Kayode Akinyemi To Star In Ali F. Mostafa’s Dubai-Set ‘City of Life Continuum’
Image
Nour El Nabawy, Lin Yin and Kayode Akinyemi have been unveiled as key cast of Emirati director Ali F. Mostafa’s long-awaited feature City of Life Continuum as principal photography gets underway at Dubai Studios.

The movie is a sequel to Mostafa’s 2009 first feature City of Life, which made history as the first local production to achieve box success as the United Arab Emirates first began building a domestic film and TV sector some 15 years ago.

It is Mostafa’s fourth feature in a filmography which also includes From A to B, following three estranged friends who reconnect during a road trip from Abu Dhabi to Beirut, and dystopian drama The Worthy.

Rising Egyptian star El Nabawy, who is represented by Cairo-based Mad Celebrity, is coming off a high profile 2024 as one of the stars of Egypt’s hit coming-of-age soccer drama duopoly Underdogs (El Hareefa) and El Hareefa...

Sundance Review: Bunnylovr is a Compelling, Messy Character Study in Social Isolation
Image
Sensitive and nuanced, Katarina Zhu’s directorial debut Bunnylovr is a compelling character study that never quite makes sense of the messy life of personal assistant by day / cam girl by night Becca (Zhu). Perhaps that is the point, although the film often edges close to something fascinating only to backpedal––perhaps a feature more than a flaw of Becca, a millennial who finds herself stuck. She’s initially drawn to a mysterious client who first refuses to go on camera with her. The Philly native sends her a rare bunny in the mail to keep her company and then insists on her putting on a show. The connection appears to be driven more by loneliness and isolation than pure fetish, but the film leaves the stranger’s motivations somewhat ambiguous until he lays down the ground rules, at one point telling her this is a transaction.

Living in Manhattan’s Lower East Side,...

'Bunnylovr' Review: A Cam Girl Reveals Our Commodified World
Image
In Bunnylovr, her debut feature, writer-director and star Katarina Zhu crafts a sensitive yet unflinching portrait of Rebecca, a Chinese American cam girl navigating a precarious social world where intimacy is mediated and commodified, and familial bonds are tenuous at best. Rebecca’s world is torn between an increasingly toxic dynamic with a faceless online client and the bittersweet reunion with her estranged, dying father. Set against the fractured backdrop of New York City, Zhu offers a nuanced exploration of how women’s bodies, emotions, and choices are persistently treated as commodities — by family, clients, and even themselves.

The film’s narrative oscillates between Rebecca’s online persona, her strained personal relationships, and her own moments of solitude, weaving a complex tapestry of identity and disconnection. Rebecca tantalizes her audience — on-screen and off — as she maneuvers through a life that demands constant negotiation of boundaries, safety, and dignity. Meanwhile, her faceless client,...

‘Bunnylovr’ Interview: Katarina Zhu Talks Creating a Character ‘More Authentic’ to Her Experiences
Image
As a first-time feature filmmaker, writing and directing is enough to put on your plate, but with “Bunnylovr,” actress Katarina Zhu knew the whole impetus for creating the project was to craft the kind of character she was dying to play. Speaking with IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio at Sundance’s IndieWire Studio, presented by DropBox, Zhu was joined by her cast, which includes her friend and peer from NYU and Stella Adler Studio, Rachel Sennott.

Recalling their time in school together, Sennott told IndieWire, “We had to go around in acting school and, like, say a word to describe what energy you gave off. Everyone to me was like, stoner. She could work in a grocery store and be really high. That was mine. But for Katarina, it was like, queen, angel, whatever.”

Though Zhu appreciated this memory, her actual post-grad performance output was hampered by the limited roles available to her,...

‘Bunnylovr’ Review: A Camgirl Struggles to Connect in a Feature Debut That’s Delicate to a Fault
Image
Rebecca, the listless protagonist of Katarina Zhu’s feature debut Bunnylovr, wears loneliness like an oversized coat. It fits a bit awkwardly and seems heavy. When you see Rebecca, or Becca as her friends call her (played by Zhu), walking through New York City’s Chinatown and the Lower East Side, as she so often does in Zhu’s film, you can tell it weighs on her.

Her clients can see it, too. Becca is a camgirl and each evening after clocking out of her day job as an assistant, she performs for strangers online. At the start of the film, a regular in her chat room asks her for her address. He wants to send her a gift, something to make her less lonely. A few days later, when Becca opens her present, she sees that it’s a soft, white bunny.

Premiering at Sundance, Bunnylovr observes Becca as...

‘Bunnylovr’ Review: Katarina Zhu Plays A Struggling Chinese American Cam Girl In Her Directorial Debut — Sundance Film Festival
Image
Writer, director and star Katarina Zhu’s feature debut is a personal portrait of fulfillment, bringing a nuanced perspective to universal themes of daddy issues, privilege and self-love.

In Bunnylovr, Zhu plays Becca, a twentysomething Chinese American who struggles through life in New York City while moonlighting as a cam girl. Her life takes a turn when a persistent client sends her a live bunny, whom she names Milk. Meanwhile, she runs into her estranged, dying father on the street.

Being fetishized and objectified by everyone in her life quickly takes a toll on Becca. She’s her father William’s (Perry Yung) lucky charm, helping him count cards in the park; she’s her best friend Bella’s (Rachel Sennott) muse, even though the artist ultimately makes her feel violated with her “feminist” creative license; her ex Carter (Jack Kilmer) strings her along as she struggles to move on...

‘Bunnylovr’ Review: An Empathetic but Aimless NYC Indie About an Alienated Camgirl
Image
The relationships between humans and animals are mutually beneficial. Feeding a pet is a reason to get out of bed in the morning; taking them out is an excuse to get dressed, go outside, and get some sun. And although she didn’t ask for the responsibility, taking care of a sweet, fluffy white rabbit with enormous eyes is exactly what the protagonist of Katarina Zhu’s “Bunnylovr” needs.

Rebecca (Zhu) is having what you might call a quarter-life crisis. Nearly friendless and struggling to pay rent, she supplements her income as a personal assistant with the money she makes chatting with guys and posting pictures of her feet on a camming website. It’s one of her clients who sends her the rabbit, actually; it’s a weird thing to do, and given the violent arc stories about sex work often take in media, the anticipation is sickening whenever...

‘Bunnylovr’ Review: An Intriguing Plunge Into the Aimless Life of a New York Cam-Girl Ultimately Feels Thin
Image
If you don’t know a great deal about bunnies apart from their cuteness, a piece of rabbit-centric trivia you will learn in writer-director Katarina Zhu’s debut feature “Bunnylovr” might just break your heart. Turns out, when bunnies experience a considerable amount of stress or a sudden burst of fear, they might go into a state of shock: Their soft bodies become limp, their floppy ears get cold, and if untreated, they can even die from it.

Rest assured, there are no gruesome bunny deaths to worry about in Zhu’s intimate yet slight portrait of New York-based Chinese American cam-girl Rebecca, delicately portrayed by Zhu herself. But existential dreads and visceral gusts of panic are quietly (and symbolically) everywhere in the film, as Rebecca drifts through her dead-end day job as a personal assistant, and her alternate persona by night as an online sex worker. These anxieties don...

Rachel Sennott and ‘Bunnylovr’ Director Katarina Zhu On the ‘Chaos’ of Working With Animals: ‘The First Day, the Bunny Peed on the Laptop’
Image
In “Bunnylovr,” a slice-of-life dramedy from first-time director Katarina Zhu, a 20-something-year-old New Yorker named Rebecca moonlights as a cam girl after hours of her day job as a personal assistant. But when one of her clients sends her a gift — a fluffy, white bunny — their dynamic takes a toxic turn.

Without getting into spoilers for the movie, which premieres at Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, there’s a precarious scene involving the tiny, snow-colored creature. But Zhu, who plays Rebecca in addition to writing and directing, promises that no bunnies were harmed during the making of “Bunnylovr.” Working with a live animal did, however, involve a “steep learning curve.”

“On the first day we worked with the bunny, it peed on the laptop. That was difficult,” Zhu said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “By the end, I understood what the bunny needed to feel comfortable. It was worth it,...

November 14 Is a Disappointing Day for Bruce Lee Fans
Image
Time is running out for Bruce Lee fans on Netflix to stream the acclaimed series Warrior. The series is set to leave the streaming platform this month.

Per Netflix, Warrior will depart Netflix on Nov. 14. The bad news goes beyond having the title removed from the platform, as it's also further confirmation that Netflix will not be saving the series after all. When Warrior was added to Netflix this past February, there were hopes in the fan base that the show would pull in enough viewership to have the streamer order a fourth season. Unfortunately, even with a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show didn't click well enough with subscribers for Netflix to pursue a continuation, coinciding with star Joe Taslim's recent comments that the show was officially finished.

7 Best Shows Like ‘Cobra Kai’ To Watch If You Love The Series
Image
Cobra Kai Season 6 is finally here and it’s even better than the last one, which no one thought was possible. The Netflix series follows the story of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who has kind of left bullying and turned into a karate instructor. The series continues the story of the 1984 film The Karate Kid, in which Johnny lost the “All Valley Karate Tournament” to his enemy Daniel (Ralph Macchio). In the series, Johnny inspires weak kids to learn karate so that they can stand up to their bullies and fight to protect themselves. Still, everything goes wrong in a very entertaining way and many iconic characters from the Karate Kid movies appear in the series. So, if you love the teen drama, action comedy, and martial arts in Cobra Kai here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 2.

7 Best Shows Like ‘Into the Badlands’ To Watch If You Love The Series
Image
Into the Badlands is “a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series” created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The AMC series is set in a dystopian future with humanity in ruins because of wars, and it follows the story of Sunny, a fierce warrior who rescues a teenager with a bounty on his head. They both journey through a dangerous territory known as the Badlands to survive. Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu in the lead role, with Orla Brady, Sarah Bolger, Aramis Knight, Emily Beecham, Oliver Stark, Madeleine Mantock, Ally Ioannides, Marton Csokas, and Nick Frost starring in supporting roles. Into the Badlands is a unique series with a unique setting, and that’s why it is hard to find a series with a similar setting and story elements, but we have tried very hard to find shows with similar story elements and many high-octane action sequences.

Every Death In 3 Body Problem Explained
Image
Spoilers are ahead for 3 Body Problem season 1.

This article mentions of the show's depictions of death by suicide.

Every death in 3 Body Problem ties into the larger story of extraterrestrial danger and interconnected fates. Characters' tragic ends are linked to the looming San-Ti threat, impacting both time and space in the series. The deaths of key figures, including Ye Wenjie and Jack Rooney, reveal the aliens' manipulation and human collaboration.

Every character's death in Netflix 3 Body Problem feeds into the show’s larger narrative about the San-Ti — extraterrestrials who are 400 years away from arriving at Earth. If anything, the sci-fi series, which adapts Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning novel The Three-Body Problem, depicts how interconnected the universe can be. One astrophysicist’s fateful decision leads to communication with the San-Ti, but that boundary-pushing endeavor to communicate with extraterrestrials was likewise shaped by a tragic death. Dianne Doan and Andrew Koji in Warrior (2019)
Warrior Canceled at Max, but Netflix Could Save the Day
Dianne Doan and Andrew Koji in Warrior (2019)
Well, this one's a true shocker.

Max has made the shocking decision to cancel Warrior.

The decision comes months after Warrior Season 3 wrapped on the streaming service.

Max rarely releases viewership statistics like many other streaming services, so it's difficult to assess how well the show performed.

The only good news to come from the cancellation is that Netflix has picked up the rights to past episodes of the series.

Deadline first reported the news, revealing that the show is set to hit Netflix in February 2024.

If the show proves to be a success with the service's subscribers, it could lead to additional seasons being produced.

Netflix has picked up many canceled shows in the past, including Cobra Kai, Longmire, and Manifest, so the company could be seen as a decent destination to get fresh episodes.

If the series does secure a reprieve at Netflix, it would mark its third U.

Warrior | Martial arts drama cancelled
Dianne Doan and Andrew Koji in Warrior (2019)
Martial arts drama Warrior has been cancelled by Sky – but there’s an outside chance that Netflix may make more episodes.

Before he became an international kung fu superstar thanks to films like Way Of The Dragon, in which he famously went hand to hand with Chuck Norris in Rome’s Colosseum, and Enter The Dragon (which features an equally iconic climactic battle which takes place in a hall of mirrors), Bruce Lee was an integral part of what made seminal 1960s show The Green Hornet a huge success.

Although his film career soon took off, had things turned out differently Lee would have continued to make an impact on the small screen. He’s generally accepted as being involved in creating the concept for Kung Fu, the drama that eventually starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, the pacifist who ended up in several fights every week.

‘Warrior’ Canceled (Again) at Max
Image
The revival of Warrior at Max turned out to be short-lived: The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled the show after its first season as a Max original and third overall.

That said, the series — based on writings by Bruce Lee and set in 19th century San Francisco — will potentially get in front of more viewers beginning in February 2024 as all three seasons will stream on Netflix. Warrior will continue to be available on Max as well, similar to other non-exclusive streaming licensing deals Wbd has made with Netflix for HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and Ballers.

Warrior began life as a Cinemax original series, premiering in 2019 to strong reviews. It was renewed for a second season that aired in fall 2020 — but by that time, Cinemax had wound down its originals business. The streamer then known as HBO Max revived it for a third season in...

‘Warrior’ Canceled by Max After Three Seasons; Netflix Acquires Repeats
Image
Max’s “Warrior,” a breakthrough series boasting one of the few Asian ensembles on television, has been canceled after three seasons. The series’ repeats will live on, however, via a off-net deal with Netflix, which has acquired the series’ run in a non-exclusive deal and could now potentially expose it to a new audience. (The show will also continue to be available on Max.)

“Warrior” returned for its third season in June after a two-year hiatus. The show originally ran on linear cabler Cinemax (starting in 2019), and was revived after a fan base campaign. Andrew Koji, Olivia Cheng, Jason Tobin, Dianne Doan, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Tom Weston-Jones, Hoon Lee, Perry Yung, Langley Kirkwood, Miranda Raison, Chen Tang, Chelsea Muirhead, Mark Dacascos and Joe Taslim star.

Shannon Lee is among the executive producers on “Warrior,” which was based on a concept by her father, Bruce Lee. Per the logline, “‘Warrior...

‘Warrior’ Canceled At Max As Netflix Picks Up Non-Exclusive Rights To 3 Existing Seasons
Image
Warrior won’t be returning for a fourth season on Max.

However, the existing three seasons of the martial arts crime drama are set to find additional audiences as Netflix has picked up the series’ library in a co-exclusive deal with Max in Warner Bros. Discovery streamer’s markets.

Warrior is expected to debut on Netflix in February 2024. If it does well, Netflix could presumably order a new season of the drama based on an original concept and treatment by Bruce Lee, sources tell Deadline exclusively.

This latest move sets Warrior in its third home in as many years. The series premiered in 2019 on Cinemax where it ran for two seasons before it was announced in early 2020 that the network was moving out of the Originals business. Wbd sibling Max picked up the show for a third season in Spring of 2021 which premiered this summer with the season concluding on...

Dispatches From The Picket Lines – “We Are Here With You ’Til The Very End,” Writers Tell Actors At Aapi-Themed Rally In Manhattan
Image
This is Day 78 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

It was everything everywhere all at once Thursday in New York City: Striking actors getting ready for contract talks were joined by writers who have just wrapped up theirs at a rally in Manhattan that also highlighted Asian American Pacific Islander culture in film and television.

On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated by Asian communities worldwide, about 200 people gathered outside the Manhattan offices of Warner Bros. Discovery for pickets and speeches that marked the official end of one strike against the major studios and the continuation of another whose end might be in sight.

Speakers including Joel de la Fuente of Hemlock Grove, Perry Yung of The Knick, Celia Au of Wu Assassins and Ivory Aquino of When We Rise hailed the growing visibility of Asian-Americans onscreen and said that their strike demands — including sustainable wages and limits on the use...

Warrior Season 3 Just Unveiled the Ultimate Bruce Lee Easter Egg
Image
This article contains spoilers for Warrior season 3 episode 6.

When it comes to Bruce Lee Easter eggs, Warrior has been cunningly hiding them in plain sight.

From the first season, there were nods like the tong man named Bolo (Rich Ting), a reference to Bolo Yeung who played the villainous killer with the Herculean physique (also named Bolo) in Enter the Dragon. Similar acknowledgements permeate the series, all the way to season three where one of the locations is an ice factory, just like the setting of The Big Boss. When the lead character Ah Sahm strips down to a white wife-beater T-shirt, it evokes Bruce Lee’s bicep revealing attire in The Way of the Dragon. Keen-eyed fans of fight choreography spot quick references to Lee’s timeless action scenes. Some Warrior fight sequences contain sequences that lift directly from Lee’s films, reimagined to fit in the series. The...

Film Review: The Harvest (2023) by Caylee So
Image
Following the very interesting “In the Life of Music”, Cambodian Caylee So now presents a rather different film with “The Harvest”, a Southeast Asian-American story written and starred in by Hmong American actor Doua Moua.

“The Harvest” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative

Thai returns to his parents house in Southern California, after a car accident leaves his family in need of his help, but the reunion is anything but idyllic. His father Cher, is as despotic as always, towards both his daughter Sue, and his wife Youa, and the fact that he is experiencing kidney failure but is not willing to take his medicine is not helping at all. His disappointment towards his son is also rather evident, both when he learns that he has quit his job as tutor to work in a restaurant, and because he feels betrayed by his leaving. The whole setting...

Doua Moua On His 15-Year Journey to Bring Hmong Stories to Hollywood
Doua Moua
Doua Moua’s big break came in 2008, when he was cast as “Spider” in the film “Gran Torino” — the first feature film to spotlight Hmong Americans. Now 15 years later, Moua’s family drama, “The Harvest” — which he wrote, produced and stars in — is set for its world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

Moua sat down with TheWrap’s Lawrence Yee ahead of the festival to talk about his labor of love.

Tell us about the genesis of the project

Doua Moua: After “Gran Torino,” I was on hold for a couple of different projects. They all kinda fell through because [the role] went to a white guy or the project got shelved. So it got to the point, “When am I going to get another role if I don’t write a film for myself?

I went back and forth — should I tell the story about my dad and me,...
