When I most unexpectedly reunited with the age-defying Ginnifer Goodwin on the Disney Upfront’s blue carpet earlier this month, I had recently gotten a Facebook “memory” about the Once Upon a Time musical episode, which aired eight years prior (and for which I was on-set, in March 2017).

The infamous Willy Wonka experience is making its way to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as a parody musical. More here.
There are few films as universally beloved as 1971’s Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (pictured). Despite author Roald Dahl reportedly hating the film, the public took it to their hearts, with classic songs like Pure Imagination entering the public consciousness.
Even though we now how three screen Wonkas – Gene Wilder, Johnny Depp and Timothee Chalamet (four if you count this) – Wilder’s Wonka is generally considered the definitive version. Tim Burton’s 2005 film, while closer in tone to the book, divided fans, not least due to Depp’s portrayal of Wonka, although it’s certainly true that Tim Burton’s visual style and updated special effects bring the chocolate factory to life in a way the 1971 film couldn’t.
Then, last year’s Wonka made people fall in love...

After more than 50 years, two actors are diving back into the world of Willy Wonka (sort of). Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen, two of the child stars of 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, will participate in a live stage reading of Willy’s Candy Spectacular, an upcoming musical parody inspired by a disastrous Wonka event that made international headlines earlier this year.
Cole played the insatiable Veruca Salt in the classic movie starring Gene Wilder as chocolatier Willy Wonka, while Themmen played the cowboy hat wearing Mike Teavee. Both will participate in a live reading at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, serving as narrators. Cole will lead the cast from Aug. 9 to 18, with Themmen stepping in from Aug. 19-26.
Willy’s Candy Spectacular was inspired by a real-life Wonka event in Scotland, which organizers advertised as “immersive experience” that would transport Willy Wonka fans to a “magical realm.

John Stamos sings about a Willy Wonka-caused apocalypse in the opening number of Willys Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody. Disastrous Willy Wonka event in Glasgow sparks viral memes, reactions, and a horror movie about an AI-created villain, The Unknown. Willy's Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody debuts at Edinburgh Fringe with a stage reading.
In one of the stranger things to happen so far this year, Full House star and Emmy Award nominee John Stamos puts his pipes to the test as he sings about an apocalypse caused by the now infamous Willy Wonka event which took place in Glasgow, Scotland earlier this year. We'll give you a second to read that sentence again. Created by the YouTube channel Willys Candy Spectacular, Stamos sings about how Willy Wonka caused the apocalypse and calls the event something that started out as a promise of fun before somehow leading to the Earths demise.

Actor and musician John Stamos is known for lending his talents to bands like The Beach Boys, but now he’s going in a very different direction. Stamos has recorded a song for Willy’s Candy Spectacular, an upcoming live musical that takes inspiration from a disastrous Willy Wonka-inspired event in Scotland earlier this year. He sings on a new track the production released Monday.
The event that inspired the musical made headlines after it used lush, artificial intelligence-generated photos to attract customers to what it billed as an “immersive experience” that would transport Willy Wonka fans to a “magical realm.” In reality, this “immersive experience” was held at a shabby warehouse in Glasgow, Scotland, that was so depressing attendees compared it to a meth lab.
This viral news story inspired The Little Mermaid Live producer Richard Kraft, and his Kraft-Engel Productions, to turn that event into a musical parody.

Something shifted when Timothée Chalamet put on the coat and top hat that transformed him into a budding chocolatier in Paul King’s Wonka. That simple act has moved us collectively into a chaos-ridden timeline in which families can get ripped off at a knockoff Willy Wonka-themed family event in Glasgow — and in which John Stamos can record the opening number demo for Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A Parody Musical, a production entirely about that event.

The Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow was described as the biggest event disaster since the Fyre Festival.
However, it appears a separate creative team has been inspired by the recent disaster, and are planning to turn the whole botched experience into a musical.
The BBC reports that producer Richard Kraft has assembled a team for the project, called “Willy Fest: A Musical Parody,” which he hopes to launch later this year. He told the BBC that the writing team was “assembled in less time than it takes for someone to sing the first verse of ‘Oompa Loompa Doompa-Dee-Do’.”

The names attached to the project include Emmy nominee and comedian Riki Lindhome and Broadway...

13 Going On 30—the Big rip-off that’s an enduring reminder of Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo’s collective appeal—is being turned into a Broadway musical, according to Deadline. The site reports that the movie’s screenwriters, Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, are tackling the book, while the songs are being written by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner of First Date, which starred Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez and was tepidly received. The rom-com already has a showstopper built in, thanks to the protagonist’s enthusiasm for “Thriller;” presumably, Zachary and Weiner are cooking up some ’80s-esque number to bring down the house/avoid dealing with the Michael Jackson estate.
In the film, Garner plays teenager Jenna Rink, who, thanks to a wish and some magic, jumps ahead in time. She realizes she’s become a not-very-nice adult, who is still friends with her former tormenter (Judy Greer ...

Musical television series have been a risky proposition for years, but the recent ratings success of projects like Fox’s Glee and ABC’s Nashville has certainly made network heads a little more bullish about ordering similar shows. Now, though, ABC is taking the exceptionally bold step on committing to an ambitious musical series that, if successful, will pave the way for even more small screen singing and dancing. Reteaming with Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, the network is eyeing a modern adaptation of Phantom of the Opera.
Similar to ABC’s Nashville, the “contemporary” adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s classic gothic novel will arrive as a drama with musical elements. Set in “the sexy and cutthroat world of the modern-day music business,” the hour long scripted series will include a script by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (Secondhand Lions, 17 Again).

"Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry is developing a contemporary TV series take on "The Phantom of the Opera" for ABC Studios.
Despite being dubbed a drama with musical elements, it is Not using Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic musical of the same name as the basis. Rather, the producers are going back to Gaston Leroux's original 1909 novel which itself has more often been the basis for TV and film adaptations of the story.
This take on the story involves a ghost who haunts an opera house and helps a budding singer before jealousy gets the better of him. Much like the network's "Nashville," this will also involve the cutthroat world of the music business and will incorporate musical moments into story lines.
Cherry, Sabrina Wind, Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner are executive producing with the latter two penning the script.
